Privacy settings are a lot like Snapchat nudes. Snapchat messages don't get deleted instantly -- people in the conversation are just unable to view them. The content still exists on Snapchat's servers.
Privacy settings without binding legal safeguards are meaningless. Don't think any particular company is good. They're all devouring your data and utilizing it for their own ends and to profit.

What's the point of showing the wrong time then? Why not just show nothing?
708
u/TSM- YELLOW 6h ago
Bug or oversight. It is not updating the time when it is in sleep mode but the screen is still on. Perhaps sleep mode stops it from adjusting the display time value because the screen used to be off. Then they decided they wanted to keep the screen on to show it was still powered or to show some wallpaper or something, and someone didn't notice that this would sometimes show the clock and not update it.

Screen savers exist to keep from burning images into a screen. It works by making sure all the pixels on the screen don't stay static for too long.
This is the exact opposite of what a screen saver does.
But most screens we use now don't need screen savers.
Edit: Added "most" because of OLEDs.
15
u/Turnip-Toffee 6h ago
oleds do benefit from burn in protection again, but you might as well just turn them off completely when not in use, so screensavers still aren't useful
60
u/clearhit 6h ago
Wait that's why they are called screen savers
...I always just thought it was for aesthetics
→ More replies (6)45
u/No-Mouse 6h ago
Aesthetics are still part of it, because otherwise they could just as well display random noise. No need for anything fancy.
The reason we have screen savers at all is to prevent burn-in. The reason we have so many cool ones is aesthetics (and, probably, bored programmers).

"Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings at least a sense of unease. Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed — in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical — and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack. For that reason, greater caution is called for than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.
If we want to know how to get the better of stupidity, we must seek to understand its nature. This much is certain, that it is in essence not an intellectual defect but a human one. There are human beings who are of remarkably agile intellect yet stupid, and others who are intellectually quite dull yet anything but stupid. We discover this to our surprise in particular situations. The impression one gains is not so much that stupidity is a congenital defect, but that, under certain circumstances, people are made stupid or that they allow this to happen to them. We note further that people who have isolated themselves from others or who live in solitude manifest this defect less frequently than individuals or groups of people inclined or condemned to sociability. And so it would seem that stupidity is perhaps less a psychological than a sociological problem. It is a particular form of the impact of historical circumstances on human beings, a psychological concomitant of certain external conditions. Upon closer observation, it becomes apparent that every strong upsurge of power in the public sphere, be it of a political or of a religious nature, infects a large part of humankind with stupidity. It would even seem that this is virtually a sociological-psychological law. The power of the one needs the stupidity of the other. The process at work here is not that particular human capacities, for instance, the intellect, suddenly atrophy or fail. Instead, it seems that under the overwhelming impact of rising power, humans are deprived of their inner independence, and, more or less consciously, give up establishing an autonomous position toward the emerging circumstances. The fact that the stupid person is often stubborn must not blind us to the fact that he is not independent. In conversation with him, one virtually feels that one is dealing not at all with a person, but with slogans, catchwords and the like, that have taken possession of him. He is under a spell, blinded, misused, and abused in his very being. Having thus become a mindless tool, the stupid person will also be capable of any evil and at the same time incapable of seeing that it is evil. This is where the danger of diabolical misuse lurks, for it is this that can once and for all destroy human beings.
Yet at this very point it becomes quite clear that only an act of liberation, not instruction, can overcome stupidity. Here we must come to terms with the fact that in most cases a genuine internal liberation becomes possible only when external liberation has preceded it. Until then we must abandon all attempts to convince the stupid person. This state of affairs explains why in such circumstances our attempts to know what "the people’ really think are in vain and why, under these circumstances, this question is so irrelevant for the person who is thinking and acting responsibly. The word of the Bible that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom declares that the internal liberation of human beings to live the responsible life before God is the only genuine way to overcome stupidity.
But these thoughts about stupidity also offer consolation in that they utterly forbid us to consider the majority of people to be stupid in every circumstance. It really will depend on whether those in power expect more from people’s stupidity than from their inner independence and wisdom."

If you use a wifi router, there is a useable map of your entire your home because of how radio waves work. It is so accurate that it can detect people through walls.
The device you're typing this on likely already listens to every single thing you say. The things you say become targeted ads the next minute. It also tracks you wherever you go.
Your comment and account in general are linked to your IP address, which law enforcement officials can use to find out who you are.
Every single thing is surveilling you.
→ More replies (44)96
u/AldrousKafka 6h ago
This is all too simplistically true, yes WiFi signals can be used to map rooms and homes and detect bodies, but to actually to this in your own home takes a whole lot of technical knowhow and then to do this in someone else’s home is a whole different level of expertise.
And I never understood the “your phone in always recording you” argument, how can this type of recording put no strain on the phones computation, battery or data usage, but recording using voice memo for an hour or scrolling Reddit for a long while drains a significant chunk.
Constant surveillance of every phone in the world is just too much data to handle for any nefarious corporate or governmental entity. It’s just not very efficient. It much easier and more efficient to track the actions you take while browsing the web and predicting patterns from that, that data can all fit in lightweight text format.

You, a criminal defense attorney: The terms of service are written in a way that obfuscates or misrepresents how the data will be used. "May be shared with third parties" is no longer meaningfully descriptive of the array of things data will be used for and in fact is common language specifically used to avoid being descriptive. The initial consent to sale is void therefore the data is not permissible.

I worked for a company on a smart watch and this is basically a low power mode. In this low power mode it uses an offloaded display which is not interactable and uses an MCU to do computations. Which means basically updates are less frequent and the display is less vivid, but you can absolutely still update it to the correct time on a regular basis. So in regards to the time being very far off this is a bug/optimization depending on your viewpoint.

Cory Doctorow, Eastern Standard Tribe (2004):
When Art actually laid hands on it, after it meandered its way across the world by slow boat, corrupt GMT+8 Posts and Telegraphs authorities, over-engineered courier services and Revenue Canada's Customs agents, he was enchanted by this feature. He could put the device into deep sleep, close it up, and pop its cover open and poof! there were his windows. It took him three days and an interesting crash to notice that even though he was seeing his workspace, he wasn't able to interact with it for thirty seconds. The auspicious crash revealed the presence of a screenshot of his pre-hibernation workspace on the drive, and he realized that the machine was tricking him, displaying the screenshot -- the illusion of wakefulness -- when he woke it up, relying on the illusion to endure while it performed its housekeeping tasks in the background. A little stopwatch work proved that this chicanery actually added three seconds to the overall wake-time, and taught him his first important user-experience lesson: perception of functionality trumps the actual function.

I was looking at the app and saw they were on, but I checked online and with Alexa to see what time it was (I was in a very different time), and it was like an hour earlier than they should have come on. I freaking broke Alexa trying to ask her why the lights were on at a time they weren't supposed to be. She claimed that was what it was set to. I screenshot it and said no, it literally says this other time. I probably spent too much time arguing it with her, to be fair.

You see 100s of ads a day that you don’t register because we are so used to them. But when you have something on your mind you notice relevant ones.
It’s not technology it’s companies spending decades throwing as many ads at you as they possibly can.

I feel like this wouldnt even be mildly infuriating to me, I would find this interesting and quirky. And see how many times I can mess with it about that lol. Does it ever show the wrong time when looking at it?
