It goes into a low power mode when no one is near

my first immediate thought, low power mode shuts off most nonessentials, probably a good thing arguably.

Then why don't microwaves or ovens do this? Telling time isnt exactly an energy intensive feature. Especially when its showing a clock as the "sleep mode."

I think the difference there is microwaves and ovens use a very basic led clock. This device is a lot more complicated as far as energy usage for behaving as a clock. From a design perspective, the energy usage suddenly becomes a consideration.
