Privacy settings are a lot like Snapchat nudes. Snapchat messages don't get deleted instantly -- people in the conversation are just unable to view them. The content still exists on Snapchat's servers.
Privacy settings without binding legal safeguards are meaningless. Don't think any particular company is good. They're all devouring your data and utilizing it for their own ends and to profit.
I don't think that's true. Politicians have fought for privacy protections on our phones on our behalf. It's the reason that there's so much mention of companies not being allowed to pass around personally identifiable information. Now, could they make a good guess as to who you are, using a bunch of different data? Yes. And that part sucks.

Perhaps elsewhere but not in the United States. The politicians in most countries are beholden to capital and thus serve the capitalist class not the working class. At best we get consilatory half measures meant to placate the masses rather than anything substantive and fundamental.
We have an ever shrinking right to privacy in the US. Palantir and other corps can amass all the information they want and it can be as personally identifiable as can be as long as its not all in one bucket at the time of transmission. Flock and Axon and others know where you go, Alphabet and Apple know where you go and who you're near, Amazon and Meta know who your social circles are and what your browsing and shopping habits are, and the CIA and other groups and companies buy up all that information.
