Ruined by Technology When we’re not looking, Alexa displays the wrong time. I finally caught her on video.

I'll never understand why people invite these creeps into their home

People in the 1950s be like : the government is wiretapping us!

People in the 2020s be like : hey wiretap, can my cat have pancakes?

Would you be ok with having your name, address, and phone number in the phone book like people in the 1950s were?

People are ok with the smartphones and shit because the corps aren't really doing much of anything with the info beyond pushing ads. Its not the government listening for whatever they deem seditious language.

Oh you sweet summer child.

The last time we had definitive proof the government was spying on us it was called PRISM. Google can fill you in. They will also report that search to the government 🖖

I'm sure it's still going on, they might have changed the name after the backlash. But they didn't stop.

The same government that can barely find illegal immigrants?

6

u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 6h ago

They aren't trying to. It's about the cruelty not the efficiency.

Ah, you're one of those conspiracy theorist types. Toodles.

6

u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 6h ago

Everything seems like a conspiracy when your head is that far up your own ass.

Its just obviously true. If you really wanted to remove as many illegal immigrants as possible you would target business owners (particialrly in agriculture) and levy massive fines if they were caught having any undocumented workers. But those people donate to republicans so it doesn't happen

The ICE raids are performative, for the cameras stuff

I even boycotted Amazon, then I got chronically ill and disabled and Alexa was the only easy and affordable version to turn lights, air filter... on/off. But I at least have the old version without cameras. Healthy I wouldn't have them either though

Gotta do what works for you!

I've never met OP but this sounds a bit harsh!

*commented from device that is creeping on them

"you say society is bad but yet you partake in it! how peculiar!" ass comment

Y'all use this as some catch all no matter the context, and it's pretty silly y'all can't tell when it doesn't fit.

Saying you don't understand why you you'd use something that steals your data, while using something that steals your data, is not the same as having a phone even though you don't support the exploitation of the workers who mined the precious metals.

an amazon alexa is a completely optional device that you can easily go your every day life without having, its a glorified smart speaker. a cellphone is hardly optional in this day and age and good luck doing anything or getting anywhere without one. one is optional, the other really isnt.

He could be posting from his 7th Amazon Fire tablet for all you know. You're just going to assume he fits into your argument, and I can turn around and assume he fits into mine.

Do you want me to change my comment to "commented on social media site that creeps on you" or will you then tell me that reddit is actually a societal need?

1

u/Commercial-Shame-335 3h ago

you're literally the one who assumed what he's on by saying "commented from a device that is creeping on them".

2

u/dm_me_ya_tiddiez 3h ago

What do you think he is commenting on this using the power of thought?

My Linux PC is creeping on me?

We have had ours for a while and used it for a few little smart things but over time stopped bothering.  Now my kids used it for music but it's been getting worse, so I'm replacing it with a Yoto.  We already have yotos for their bedrooms and like them, no voice, no mic, no ai.

At first I needed a solution to turn my lamps on and Alexa seemed like a good idea. Now I’m trying to figure out another way.

If you actually watched the video, a voice prompt was what prompted the display to respond.

But you didn't.

I actually am depressed enough today that I wastefully sat here and watched it with my doomscrolling time. Not sure what you're on about tbh.

I have a nerd friend who was about 35 the last time I visited and I don't think has ever had a girlfriend.

Edit since apparently people are too dumb to figure it out: He's lonely and uses Alexa to control his house and keep him company.

u/_recapitated 8h ago

I'm lost

u/Not-An-FBI 8h ago

It's his AI girlfriend.

Riveting story. Thanks for sharing.

As someone over 35, with no girlfriend for the past few years, and also has 2 Alexa devices, I do use it to control devices, but it is in no way something to keep you company. In fact, I find myself frustrated more with mine than anything. I tell it to find a channel on Audacity and she's like "I can't find that on Audible".

No, i use a telegraph to exchange with my reddit broker several times a day.

I'm not going to apologize for the "hypocrisy" of not maximizing surveillance against me while not opting out of the world.

The way things are isn't how i want them to be, and that isn't a contradiction.
