Don't know if you were/are a Giant Bomb fan, but reminds me of the joke Jeff Gerstmann used to tell about Mario World Yoshi after some newer staff started praising the Yoshi's Island sequel, which was basically "I only ride Yoshi off a cliff, man! Fuck that guy!"
That and Suzuki spraying himself in the face with champagne like the meme will live rent free in my head. The fact we got both on the same day is magical.
A lot of athletes do this. You don’t want your words twisted or taken out of context and it’s harder to control what you’re saying to the media vs. fucking around in the locker room.
The media training thing has a lot to do with it for sure, but the bigger more human part is that it’s just fucking stressful for most people to try to speak in their second language.
My in-laws have lived here for 25 years and still get really self-conscious about their English to the point where my wife goes to important doctors appointments with them. I can’t imagine how it would feel speaking into a camera and feeling like the whole world is listening to you speak a language you don’t think you know.
If im Justin Ishbia im offering to pay the whole thing just to make sure not to ruin the revitalized popularity before I take full control, but maybe thats just wishful thinking

Watching this guy you have to wonder what Ohtani is so afraid of speaking English. This guy can barely speak the language at all and every word he manages to get out in English makes him seem charming and likeable
Some people are just like that. I live in Germany, have worked to learn the language, read novels in German, work in German, and still I think my German is shit (it is).
Meanwhile a buddy of mine moved here, babbles in this horrible mix of German and English to natives who can speak English perfectly well (it's SO embarrassing) and I guarantee he doesn't think about it for even a second.

Japanese mindset is that you either do something extremely well, or you avoid doing that thing at all. This might be the case for speaking English in public (in front of camera). You also have to remember that Ohtani is a brand business in and of itself, especially in Japan, in the mold of LeBron and Jordan brand. The media over there is also ruthless. You don’t get to act fun and unpredictable when you have multimillion dollars riding on your reputation. If Ohtani acts drunk and blabber the way Mune was, the Japanese media would tear him a new one.
Yeah I think the brand angle is the biggest reason. Ohtani came to America with the highest expectations and delivered on them. Mune came to America with lower expectations and surpassed them while powering a young fun team that runs on party vibes.
If Ohtani was clowning around, it might be seen as improper to some. Mune just has a different ticket.
Might be less about Japanese mindset and more about an awareness of his own image and how people back home will judge and dissect every little thing he does.
Baseball playoffs are so facinating, in any of the other sport everyone is celebrating but like a normal after winning a game celebration. Baseball they party like they won the world series after every series
This is what getting old is like. First you get a hangover the next day, then a few hours after drinking, now... The hangover happens the day before to try and warn you off your bad decision.
