Food Wine can be not vegan

Hello all!
Just wanted to share for those who didn’t know this.

Apparently, wine can be not vegan, as they can use gelatine for its production!
I learnt this during my winery visit.
So be careful and buy bottles which are labeled as vegan.

As for me, I had no idea that gelatine can be used even in wine production 🍷 😥

Edit:
I didn’t mean that ALL WINE IS NOT VEGAN, I meant that SOME WINE can be NOT VEGAN.
!! Can be not vegan≠cannot be vegan !!

Discussion There seems to be no ethical option for what to do with the leather I’ve previously purchased

I’m in the transition to go vegan with my clothing options, but I’m really stuck on what to do with the leather clothing and bags I’ve bought in the past?

Selling them/giving them away raises the concern of promoting animal exploitation, not using them at all/replacing them promotes waste and discarding them harms the environment and the habitats of the animals I’m trying to be more conscious of.

I really don’t know what to do! Would it be immoral/misaligned of me to continue using the bags and clothes I’ve bought even if I don’t buy any new ones? Would love to hear some of your thoughts

Discussion How can I encourage my friends to go plant-based?

So I have been a vegetarian since my friends knew me, and I have recently gone plant-based (I still wear the leather jacket, belts, and boots that I bought before I changed so I am not really comfortable using the term vegan for myself yet). Most of them eat very little meat already (too expensive anyway), but they still eat a lot of cheese and eggs.
I don't want to be pushy, but now I've opened my eyes to what is actually happening, I cannot see my friends as I used to, if they keep exploiting animals.
Both of them are completely anti (human) exploitation and punk/anarchists, so I felt like a lot of the arguments could ring a bell?
But I don't know, they're both like "I know you're right but I won't" (which is an argument I really don't like). I think they are aware of the cognitive dissonance.
They are kind of open, and I am trying to give them time (I mean I have been a vegetarian for three years before going plant-based, so I can't really reproach them not to go vegan instantly), but I find it disgusting that they still eat animals and animal products. When I am with them, they are totally fine with eating vegan food, and one of them really loves tofu, so I am hopeful.

So yeah, they already are halfway through, I guess, and I would like to know if you had some tips/advice to help me encourage them?

EDIT: thanks everyone! I've read your replies and that's very helpful, and gives me a lot of hope! I'll try to cook for them when I can.
Also, I wanted to clarify that most of the time, our conversation on the topic come from them. I never initiate, and I try to stay factual and not become defensive. Anyway they do understand, they just won't do it, at least for now, probably because it's difficult to change all of your diet (especially since both have depression and some kind of ADHD/autism).

Relationships Is this a reasonable boundary or controlling?

I'm a newer vegan and sad that none of my friends or family will consider it, including my partner. But, especially after watching Dominion last month, I feel deeply uncomfortable being around people who are eating meat or dairy products... I've been thinking about setting a boundary that I will not hangout with, or eat with, my loved ones if they are eating meat. I'm just worried that this will be controlling or sound like an ultimatum that will end up pushing them away. Or that they would say I'm being dramatic. I'm also worried that this would only result in myself being more isolated from everyone. Has anyone else navigated this and found a good solution? I want to try to convince them to go vegan too but that feels impossible atm..

Edit: Idk why so many of you are saying that I'm "cutting people off" when I never said that at all. If my partner is eating meat and I go into the other room, that is in no way "cutting them off". You're being dramatic and not helpful. Sheesh.

Rant Environmentalist hypocrisy

I know I'm not the first to make this rant. I know I won't be the last. Lately, it has been really getting under my skin the way self professed "environmentalists" will bend over backwards to "reduce their carbon footprint" when they won't give up animal products! Using animal products is the worst possible thing you can do for the environment!

Go ahead. Swear off plastic straws. Buy only clean beauty products. Plant 100 trees. Drive an electric car. Better yet, bike everywhere. Use only recycled paper products. Wipe your ass with old wash cloths. Keep your house at 60° in winter and 80° in summer. Buy only used/"eco conscious" fashion. Shop only at your local farmer's market. Get all new EnergyStar appliances. Write to your congressmen about AI and data centers. Take Amtrak to BurningMan. Use only compostable bags (which are mostly a marketing gimmick because nearly every one of them has fine print somewhere that says, "For composting at commercial facilities only."). Have yourself a big ol' recycled paper ticker tape parade on Earth Day. Doing all that combined STILL won't do jack shit compared to giving up animal products!

Worse, there are lots of "environmentalists" who claim that vegans are worse for the planet because of -shudder- MONOCROPS! They totally leave out that most of those crops feed farmed animals.

I know, I know the information is suppressed. My brother in law is a chef. He doesn't proclaim to be an environmentalist but he has studied food and food production his whole life. He's like 50. Even he had NEVER heard that animal agriculture is horrible for the planet! He also got mad that I told him to look it up precisely because he's studied food his whole life.

BUT, people who call themselves environmentalists should be doing the extra work to learn about this stuff if they actually care. WHY won't they let go of the corpses? Do they know and just don't care? Or do they really not know better? Or is "environmentalist" become yet another overuses, nebulous term that basically means, "I care about this sometimes."

Anyway, RAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!

Ethical animal sanctuaries in Costa Rica?

Hello! I am traveling to Costa Rica in November and want to visit an ethical animal sanctuary, but it’s hard to figure out what is and isn’t ethical cause of greenwashing :/ my vegan friend visited the Jaguar Rescue Center and really vouches for it, but that’s on the very south end of the country, and we primarily want to be in the La Fortuna area. Anyone have any recommendations?? Thank you so much!

EDIT: specifically looking for a sanctuary that houses local wildlife, not dogs, farmed animals, etc. I can find that at home haha

Question How do you handle partner and closest ones not caring about the animals and environment?

I recently went vegan. Because I saw a video here and there about the treatment of the farm animals on my instagram. After that I’ve seen more and more and now I feel like shit all the time, and I feel like absolutely no one cares. At least in my circle of people.
My partner is not vegan, and I understand it’s a hard change to stop dissociating between the ”product” you eat, and the animal I guess?
I just feel like everybody only thinks of themselves.
How do you guys handle being with a partner or hanging out with loved ones with such different views on it?
They won’t even buy ”not tested on animals” or ”less climate impact”. Because they refuse to give up their comfort. I feel like I’m going insane because it feels so urgent and people are just thinking about themselves.

Activism “It’s apart of the food chain”

Then why do humans only do this to the most harmless and docile animals? Pigs, chickens, and cows are absolutely harmless to animals and wouldnt ever do the same thing to them. Humans take advantage of them, and breed them to produce as much eggs, milk and meat as they can. These animals can not do anything about this, and there is nothing natural about it. They would never make a lion farm, a elephant farm, because they know those animals would actually fight back against them. It is cowardly and targeting the most peaceful and friendly animals

I have a moral problem

Hi, I dont think after this i can consider myself fully vegan, but I:

Advocate for animal rights in slaughterhouses, advocate for animals exploited for fur, wool etc.

I dont eat anything that comes from animals, even honey or some fruits that need animal exploitation for their growth, but there's a problem.

I am really, like really keen on reptiles, bugs etc. And i confess that I used to buy them before going somewhat vegan (I haven't bought any since that time)

I dont have any reptiles yet, I have mantises and stick bugs. And is it okay morally for me to continue with this hobby? I get my bugs from breeders that I am sure breed them not all the time. I know its still using animals for profit, but i always give them a good enclosure that i upgrade as they grow and give them what they need. As the thing for reptiles i only plan on getting them by rescuing or getting it from someone who doesn't want it anymore. And im a little bit in denial. Am I a hypocrite? I can handle honest opinions, but please don't get vulgar. Edit: I wanted to thank all the people who helped me. From now on I wont buy any more bugs and just will wait for my mantises to peacefully leave this world. I will stop eith this hobby and do something else... I wanted to thank yall again

Discussion The struggle to change for the better

I know I should become vegan.

I know I should eat less calories than I burn.

I know I should excercise more.

I know I should use my phone less.

I know I should be more politically active in my community.

I know I should stop procrastinating.

There's so many things I know I should start/stop doing so I can change for the better, but after all these years I still can't manage to overcome these specific struggles.

I feel like a lost cause. I feel like I have tried so hard to change, and failed.

How did/do you do it?

Discussion What's your opinion on capital punishment? Can you be vegan and pro death penalty?

Reading the news of the botched execution in Tennessee this past week has me questioning my moral consistency. I was pro death penalty at first, but I'm doing research and I'm realizing how inhumane and unethical these executions are and how they don't actually save the tax payers money in the long run because it's so expensive to execute an inmate. Is it morally consistent to be pro death penality and be vegan? I'm pro choice, if that changes anything. I feel like sometimes I think life is sacred, other times not. Thanks for reading this and your input.

Question How do you deal with your close ones not converting despite all the information that made you switch?

I have been vegan for around 2 months now and I just can't wrap my head around why people I see as equals - my friends and family, could NOT want to stop supporting all these animal-product companies. I get that a large portion of these products taste good/feel good but isn't morality more important than earthly pleasures? How do you deal with close ones that don't want to convert? I know no vegan irl and it just makes me feel lonely and isolated.

Question Any replacements for tofu?

About a year ago I tried eating tofu meatballs at a restaurant close by my house, and I felt my throat close in what I assume to be an allergic reaction. I’ve been wanting to get into veganism recently, and I don’t know any replacement for tofu in terms of protein.

Vegan options at college? SUNY is particular....

My vegan daughter is a junior in HS and is looking at SUNY colleges. We can't afford to go private, unless it's a free ride.

My question is that the SUNY's we're looking at are Stony Brook, Binghamton, Buffalo. I've tried to find information online but cannot find daily menus. I can only find "sample menus" or menus from four years ago.

Any information about where she would be able to eat comfortable from the 3 schools above? (I'm not looking for information about the other SUNY's.)

US Supreme Court should hear cases against factory animals farms. Case being heard this session blames oil companies and completely ignores factory farming.

The US Supreme Court is hearing a case against the oil industry (Suncor Energy vs. Boulder County)
The case is bringing the question of whether energy companies should be responsible for environmental impact at the state level.
Why are there so many people that deny the damage and harm caused by factory farm operations? Toxic Waste and Manure
Volume: U.S. CAFOs confine billions of animals and produce over 900 billion to 1 trillion pounds of untreated manure and agricultural sewage every year—vastly exceeding total human waste production.
(Google AI statistics- quick search)
This is only mentioning the sewage and waste from these farms.
I’m an ethical vegan, and what I promote is generally for the animals, but when environmental advocates bring cases to the Supreme Court, completely ignoring the impact of factory farms, I question motive and logic of it.
It seems like if we close these farms and find alternative resources and land space for non-animal agriculture, it would solve many problems.
How are these issues ignored by environmentalists? Are they just not as knowledgeable as they claim to be or choose to ignore because of the financial benefits from factory farming and animal product sales? The answer is so obvious!

Food Protein suggestions?

Hello,
I’m relatively new to being vegan, and right now I’m trying to focus on getting a good amount of protein from my meals. I run daily and left around 3-4 times per week.
I do quite enjoy cooking and I’m creative in the kitchen, so I’m open to any meal ideas. I’ve tried tofu, and tried to spice it up several different ways. There’s just one thing I can’t get past with it: the texture.
So if anyone has any other suggestions for a protein replacement, I’d appreciate it. :)

Rant I am so fed up with seeing non-vegans get outraged when animals that aren't raised for farming are mistreated.

The title pretty much says it all. I just needed to vent about this.

Every time I hear a non-vegan acting shocked by some random news around the mistreatment of a pet or a wild animal, I always want to ask them : "Why do you care ? You're not vegan. You don't care about animals, don't act like you do."

Crappy world.

EDIT :
This post was very raw and written in a moment of great anger. It did come from a part of me that struggles to have empathy for people because it is so hurt.

Now that I've calmed down, I'll try to rephrase what I was feeling. It is quite hard for me to explain it clearly, though, and I'm sorry about that.

I get frustrated with this specific behavior because it makes me see that people are able to feel bad for other animals but are unable to understand my concerns for farming animals. It hurts me so much to see that they are in fact capable of love and empathy but that they won't or can't give it to something that I find so important. A part of me would have felt more comfortable with believing that they just didn't have any empathy at all, you see? It would just make more sense, in a weird way.
All of this is very ironic because I used to be just like these people, of course. But sometimes, the pain makes me think unreasonably.

Anyways, any concern for any animal is of course welcome. I understand how my post could have upset some people and I'd like to apologize about that.

Help me find this vegan cookbook for my partner's birthday please!!!

I saw it on a website a few weeks ago and now I can't remember the name of it! From what I recall, it is a new book coming out and has an all maroon/brick red hardcover with no print on the front (I think the name of it was pressed into the cover?) I think it is of international recipes that are naturally vegan? It was still in the start-up phase and isn't on store shelves yet. I'm sorry I can't remember much more! Any help would be appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

Rant I'm so sick of this school

I'm in a boarding school in Japan and recently went vegan. Basically everything isnt vegan, not even vegetarian. There are allergy labels labeling allergans or meat/fish but they're not correct half of the time. The vegetable salads are labeled with chicken sometimes (with no chicken in it?), and today there was a salad option that seemed fine. It wasn't even labeled with any fish allergan? Then I looked closer and there were white things with eyes, they were tiny fish. Last night the vegetarian section had gelatin. WHY???

Disturbing An interesting post on NextDoor regarding petri dish meat and 3D printed soy products which imitate meat.

Thumbnail nextdoor.com

Excerpt: "#news The first 3D printed 'meat' has federal clearance and is about to be sold in the United States. Packaging will not say 'lab-grown meat' because there is not a law that requires the packaging to say it was printed."

I am sort of surprised that such a discussion will appear in the NextDoor app.

Disturbing Meat eaters being cruel

I’m a new vegan and I’m 18, and the reactions by others to it have been very surprising, the only person supportive of me is my mom who buys me vegan products. Others are unnecessarily rude to you for no reason, I wasn’t even doing any activism just simply saying I’m vegan, and how much I like impossible burgers, and someone wants to reply with like “girl bye” and I explain how these factory farms senselessly torturing and killing these animals and they just responded “fuck them animals”, like wow, You’d think I was doing activism telling non vegans that they’re evil or something. Well some of them might just be evil. And another meat eater called me dumb for no reason… when they’re completed uneducated about the farming industry arguing that it uses “ethical” practices, meanwhile 99% of meat comes from factory farms. Why are people so offended about us having empathy for animals. Does anyone else experience this?

Reaction to accidentally eating dairy?

I got a veggie burrito from Del Taco yesterday, which I ordered with no cheese or sour cream. While eating it, something tasted “off” but I couldn’t see any dairy. After finishing it, I’ve had a feeling like a lump in the back of my throat ever since. Has this happened to anyone before? Is it a dairy allergy or just in my head? I don’t have an upset stomach.

Discussion Being vegan doesn’t require much empathy

I feel like this is a popular misconception, even within the vegan community. But being vegan doesn’t require much more empathy than feeling bad about seeing a person kick a dog on the street. And I’m pretty sure 99% of people on earth have that level of empathy and if you don’t you probably have psychopathy.

If you have that prerequisite, then the rest of veganism follows from purely a logical perspective. 1. It’s wrong to cause suffering unnecessarily
2. Animals feel pain just like me and you and that dog who was kicked on the street (note I didn’t say they feel the same level of suffering as humans, you don’t need to believe that either for this statement to still be true)
3. Animal agriculture causes not just a basic level of suffering but quite a substantial one (if you disagree with this please watch dominion)
4. You don’t need animal products to live a healthy and happy life.

Conclusion. Be vegan.

Lowkey a rant because I said to someone I’m close to that empathy never came naturally to me and she said that’s surprising because I’m vegan… which I guess triggered me because I don’t think being very empathetic is a requirement to be vegan.

I'm starting to hate my non-vegan friends (which is to say, all of them). Anyone else?

Well, hate might be too harsh of a word. But lately it's becoming really difficult not to feel a certain aversion towards them. I guess I just can't wrap my head around how can they understand my morals and be aware of the animal cruelty in the livestock industry, yet still eat meat and drink milk without an ounce of guilt??

I think I'm reaching the point where I have a zero tolerance stance about this issue. Maybe if I just avoid going out to eat with them, that feeling of aversion will subside... or maybe I just need to find vegan friends.

Has anyone been through an experience like this?
