Food Convince me Beyond Meat isn't straight up health food
The sodium content is 20% of the RDA, about a fifth of a teaspoon of salt per patty. You get 20 grams of protein, 270 calories. That's a fantastic deal. Very favorable. I make the contention that that sodium content is in fact not particularly high for what the food is.
If you wanted to get 20 grams of protein from "natural" vegan food (aside from soy, granted), you would have to eat a physically large quantity of food. If you don't salt it (the "gotcha!" to Beyond Meat), the food will be very bland. It is unlikely you will get to 20 grams of protein with just 270 calories and only 20% sodium, again unless you're willing to eat a lot of bland food out of fear for your long term health.
Most "natural" vegan foods are not a good source of protein compared to Beyond Meat. It would take about three servings of lentils to equal one Beyond patty. If you don't salt the lentils, they will be bland as all hell, and a chore to eat. If you do, then you could easily get to 20% RDA or even more.
The numbers don't work out for Beyond Meat being a "sometimes food". Unless there's some super secret "bad for you" thing in it, the sodium content can easily fit into a daily diet.
Let's say you ate 3 Beyond Burgers. You'd have had 60 grams of protein, and would still have 40% of your RDA of sodium left over. The sodium content of Beyond Burgers is ridiculously overblown.

Food Starbucks Matcha is NOT VEGAN (even with plant milks)
I reached out to Starbucks back in august to confirm their matcha drinks are vegan, just because I am paranoid, and they confirmed it’s actually not vegan?! I just thought of sharing this info now as I see a lot of sources online saying it is vegan .

Food How do I achieve tofu like this
Hi, new vegan here. Just started swapping out meat for tofu whenever I go out and eat. I am struggling a lot with cooking good tofu at home. My air-fryer tofu always seems to come out too rubbery and chewy. Yesterday, I went to a new Thai restaurant out of town and ate what I can only describe as THE BEST tofu I've had so far. It was tenderly crispy on the outside, and on the inside it had this... velvety, silky, soft creamy interior that was just so bloody good. I love love love the contrast in texture. I tried to ask them how the tofu was made but their English was not very good so I didn't get anywhere with that question. Can someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me how to make this at home??? I am literally a tofu noob and I am not happy with the tofu I make at home

Food The decline in popularity of soy non-dairy substitute frustrates me
I don't get it. I know there was a panic about it increasing the risk of breast cancer, which seems to be mostly untrue. It is a good source of protein and calcium, unlike the other non-dairy choices. Almond milk isn't too environmentally friendly. It tastes better than rice milk (which is another that has fallen out of favor). I think soy yougart tastes better than the others too. Your thoughts?
EDIT: I'm in the US, just for reference.

Food Am I stupid or do none of the tricks to remove bugs from broccoli actually work?
I love broccoli but it seems like no matter what I do, I always end up spending hours picking bugs out of every single floret.
I’ve tried buying organic and non-organic. Whole heads and cut florets, fresh and frozen. Different brands. Different stores (I’m in the Midwest U.S. btw). “Washed and ready to eat.” There are bugs in all of it. I’ve tried rinsing. Soaking in heavily salted water and rinsing. Microwaving then soaking then rinsing. Vinegar rinses. Nothing even starts to remove the bugs. At least with the non-organic packaged stuff, the bugs are dead. They’re still alive in the organic/local broccoli. Either way, I can’t figure out an easier way to remove them.
I know on an intellectual level that eating produce means eating bugs, even as a vegan. But when confronted with the actual bugs--that I can see--while prepping broccoli, I can’t help but go through every. Single. Floret. To manually pick out the bugs. It takes hours and my neck is killing me! Today I cut a floret in half and I cut through one of those bright green caterpillar/worm things 🤢
Are we all just ok knowingly consuming bugs with our broccoli? Am I missing something? How do you all handle difficult-to-remove bugs in produce?
Edit: ok friends, next time I buy broccoli, I’m going to post the receipts. I’m going to take pictures with my little macro lens that clips onto my phone and I’m going to account for all of the bugs that I pick out of my broccoli and I’ll post about it again. I am a highly educated, functional, employed woman. I’m not on any medication and my glasses prescription is up to date. I cannot be the only one who’s dealing with this. The bugs are either grey with really long legs, brown with short legs (the brown ones come in two sizes: tiny and not so tiny), and the green caterpillar-looking ones, who are the most repulsive of all. Please, I beg you, look at your broccoli. Like, really closely. I’m not crazy!

Food Friend bringing non vegan food to my (vegan) party
My partner and I throw an annual Christmas party of 40 or so guests every year. The food that we provide is entirely vegan, which made known on the invitation. I'm also vegan, which my friends know, but my partner is not. Several friends brought food items this year, most of which were non vegan and some of which are not even vegetarian (chicken soup, cheese, sardines, cookies).
This bothers me not only because it's unethical, but also because I think it's rather rude to bring something the host can't eat to the host's house. Especially after we've made it clear that the food we will be offering is vegan. I guess my partner isn't vegan, but I don't think that justifies it.
What do you guys think -- is this rude? Also, in the future, can I tell guests that while they are welcome to bring something, we really want what they bring to be vegan?

Food Oat milk is better than almond milk
Even cashew milk is better than almond milk. Almond milk is the inferior plant milk.
Fight me.
Edit: I don't not like almond milk, I just think oat is better
Edit 2: Jesus Christ, you all. 2k+ upvotes, 400+ comments, and 4 rewards? I made this post on a whim because I ran out of oat milk and didn't have any for my coffee this morning.

Food Bring back Plant-Based Orange Chicken at Panda Express
Hi friends! A year ago, my friend set off on a mission to bring back the Beyond Meat orange chicken entree at Panda Express. Over 2,000 signatures later, the petition she created is gaining momentum once again. It blew up on this subreddit a while back, and I just wanted to share it again in case any new members or orange-chicken yearners want to help support her cause. She is very passionate about making vegan-friendly food choices accessible in fast food or chain restaurants, as we are college students with a couple of dollars to our names that want to enjoy delicious plant-based meals on a budget.
I ask kindly that you please take a moment to consider signing this petition; if not for you, for your Panda Express-frequenting friends, and maybe sharing it with other vegans that may want to support my friend's endeavors further!
Thank you!

Food Importance of happy cow reviews
I have noticed less and less reviews are going on happy cow now, just thought I’d remind everyone how useful it is if vegan option places are added and people keep reviews up on these apps!
Just went on a trip where the most up to date reviews on some were 2020- luckily the places I went to still have vegan options just hadn’t been reviewed in ages
Are people still using happy cow or is there another app now which I should download?
P.S- big thank you to everyone who does and has left reviews it’s saved me many times while traveling!

Food Amsterdam is amazing for Vegans!
I have been Vegan for 6 months and was starting to struggle because of the festive season. It feels hard to escape animal products and options at restaurants can be limited or disappointing but a trip to Amsterdam has raised my hopes.
I live in London which is known to be good for vegans, but Amsterdam and Ultretch are on another level. It's the first city I've been where I can eat something delicious almost everywhere i go and I can't wait to return. Many places offered plant milk as standard or a vegan alternative food.
The food is so good and the amount of options made me feel warm inside despite the rain all holiday!
I forgot to take photos of it all but places I visited were;
Amsterdam
- Hearth ( vegan tasting menu and live music)
Fuku ramen- ( pumpkin ramen, not vegan but always has 1 out of 3 vegan ramen)
- St Jean French Bakery ( 2x pastries)
- Margo bakery ( 2x pastries including pistachio)
- Nomo ( pistachio rose matcha)
- Mister Nata ( vegan Pastel de nata option)
- Fable ( fries with vegan mayo and curry ketchup)
- Franz ( hot dogs with plant based option and all toppings plant based as standard which is great..even all mayo is PB)
Van Holland Stroopwafel- ( this was expensive but I struggled to find a vegan one and didn't want to miss out)
Lova- ( only one vegan breakfast option but it was great. My partner said it was better than his non vegan options. I had cassava hash brown with a creamy sauce and mushroom)
Ultretch
Kembar - ( satay tofu and soto ayam soup)
Soup- er ( the most delicious tomatoe soup I've ever had. 3 to choose from )
Taamara - ( black chickpea curry and daal)
FLFL - ( falafal)
I'm leaving so much fatter from stuffing my face with lots of delicious treats.

Food So Gluten-free is easy to accommodate but apparently NOT veganism?? 😑
So first me and my bf Jeremy got the classic "are you guys still vegan?" at Christmas Eve at his brother and sister-in-law's house (where we always go). 🥴 I hate that question. And Especially when they don't hide the face of hopefulness that you'll say "no".
AND THEN this past year a couple people in one part of their family were diagnosed celiac so need gluten-free. Jeremy's sister-in-law (tonight's host) declared EVERYTHING gluten free for dinner... Meanwhile me and Jeremy have been vegan for 3 Christmases now and not a single thing offered there tonight was vegan... Like... 🙄🙄 Yeah. Prove you can make the effort... Just not for the vegans of the family.
Of course I brought some food for me and Jeremy like I usually do. But... Come on man... 😭

Food Y’all weren’t lying about that vegan egg white powder
I made a lemon meringue pie for Pi Day on Saturday!!
I used the Healthier Comforts Animal Free Egg Whites.
Before I explain more, I want to clarify that this pie I’m sharing here IS vegan. The Animal Free Egg Whites ARE vegan. I explain how it works in the 2nd to last paragraph of this post.
I combined two different lemon meringue recipes as I wanted to try using the vegan egg white powder as a replacement for egg whites in a recipe that calls for egg whites. (rather than using the egg white powder to replace aquafaba in a vegan recipe)
For the meringue I used the Classic Lemon Meringue Pie recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction.
For the lemon curd I used the Vegan Lemon Meringue Pie recipe from School Night Vegan.
For the crust, I just used a store bought graham cracker crust from Aldi.
I’ll try to link the recipes in the comments.
I was shocked at how well the egg white powder whipped up. I’ve been vegan for nearly 8 years so it’s been a while since I’ve had meringue. I missed it. I didn’t expect it to taste just like it, but it does.
I have also tried making kind of an egg white scramble with some vegan cheese sprinkled in and that worked out really well.
When whipping the egg white powder, I really can’t imagine making it work without an electric handheld mixer (if you have managed to do it with an old fashioned whisk, I’m very impressed and maybe scared). A standing electric whisk probably works as well but I’ve not tried it. If you don’t have an electric whisk, and you want to use this egg white powder to make an omelette or something, I would try using a blender for a few seconds to really immerse the powder and the water. It will get frothy, just let it sit for a couple minutes before putting it on the pan, perhaps just while you wait for the pan to completely heat up.
If you’re not already aware, the way that it works (roughly) is that they precision ferment yeast, and that creates this powder that’s chemically the same as egg whites from chickens. Wild.
If you have any questions about these egg whites and my experience using them, don’t hesitate to ask! I’d also love suggestions for other things to attempt to make with them. If I try them, I’ll post my results here as well :)

Food Why is every restaurant Beyond and Impossible only??
I'm so tired of it! They give me migraines. I miss actually bean and veggie patties which taste so much better anyway. I was at a restaurant a few days ago and they had a Beyond Brat and a veggie patty. I ordered the veggie patty and it turned out to be Beyond. Nearly every restaurant, the only option are these fake meats!
Don't get me wrong, I'm happier if people aren't eating actual meat, but do people actually eat this stuff? I'm tired of seeing my options dwindle.

Food Is Feeding People Vegan Food Without Telling Them Wrong?
Family is going on a trip and wanted sandwiches to take. But I strongly dislike buying meat for other people so I made them vegan. Normally I would be fine telling people it's vegan, but these family members don't like vegan food and don't like that I don't eat meat, they think people need to eat meat or they'll become malnutritioned, etc. So I'm not going to tell them it's vegan. AITA?

Food For all the non-vegans here from r/all, you can still eat burgers as a vegan. You can eat curry. You can eat pizza. You can eat pasta. In fact, almost every dish can be made vegan with a bit of culinary flair. (Attached pics of various meals I’ve had/made lately)
