new vegan: how to substitute yogurt
hello! I’ve been vegan for quite a while now but I’ve always been a yogurt lover..and I’ve been getting insane cravings for it, I feel like this is the only thing that is stopping me from going fully vegan, are there any good alternatives that have the same tang and thickness of yogurt? i used to eat insane amounts of yogurt so i’m finding it really hard pls help
p.s. i haven’t had it for 3ish months but my cravings are very hard to ignore so i feel like it’ll be the hardest thing long term to give up 🥹🥹

siggis plant based is the thickest i’ve tried, yummy flavors. forager is a little thinner than a non fat greek yogurt but has a good tang, the passion fruit is my favorite. cocojune is thinner and not as tangy but has absolutely delicious flavors. i’m not a fan of silk or kite hill, they are very watery to me!

Have you tried literally any plant-based yogurt?

yess i like eating yogurt plain and unsweetened, so most of the coconut/soy yogurts available in australia that i’ve tried end up being either too watery or heavily sweetened! that’s why i posted this to get some more recommendations!!

I heard Forager makes great plain vegan yogurt but I'm not sure what countries they sell in.
You could always make yogurt too... Look into Miyoko Schinner's recipes. Chia Pudding is a simple yogurt-like food you can make by just whisking 1 part chia seeds with 3 parts vegan milk or water. Let it sit for 10+ mins and it gels up. Tastes great with blueberries and brown sugar.

Forager plain unsweetened yogurt is the best one that I've tried. Trader Joe's sells it under their own brand name. It's made from cashews and coconut among other ingredients..

Forager or Coco june yogurt. You can also buy lactic acid powder and add a pinch to it or your own recipe

Second making your own. I bought a tub of soy yoghurt with active cultures from Coles (see you're in Australia) just once to use as a starter, and now just use quarter cup from my previous batch with a litre of Aldi soy milk. A litre of thick, creamy yoghurt for $1.50

i’m seeing a lot of people recommend making my own, i’ll definitely try to find the soy yogurt, thank you! :)

Soy yoghurts are great! Also to make cream cheese: put in a cheese towel and have it drip through for at least a day. With a bit salt you get a great tasting vegan cheese

I use an Instant Pot (with a "yogurt button") to make plant based yogurts out of plant milk (soy or coconut is what I've used - only successful if zero additives) + a probiotic capsule (or a vegan yogurt starter, or just a bit of plain vegan store-bought yogurt.) Once you have the elements, it's incredibly easy. And it's the best yogurt I've tasted.

I used to love yoghurt too and never found a good substitute.
Until Alpro launched their natural yoghurt with coconut (it doesn’t taste of coconut) – for me, it’s the best alternative to natural yoghurt.
I also really like some of Alpro’s other fruit-flavoured varieties.
And I like Alpro Plant Protein as well.

I like the vegan skyr yogurt from Icelandic Provisions. It's oat milk based, thick, decent protein content for the size.

I make my own and leave it fermenting for about 10-12 hours for a plainer taste, and longer for a tangier the yoghurt. Just remember to buy the plant based yoghurt stater (Green Harvest online) and use a relatively high protein plant milk like Vitasoy Protein Plus for the best results. I use an eighth of a teaspoon of starter to 500ml of milk and I don’t add extra sugar.

My personal favorite is the peach mango flavor of soy yogurt by Silk! In general Silk is the only yogurt brand I like, and it’s also healthier to me because there is much less saturated fat compared to the coconut-based ones. Silk has almond-based and soy-based, and I prefer the soy ones but the almond ones are fine too! The down side is that it still has a higher amount of added sugar than I prefer, but I think that’s true for most yogurt.
I think the best alternative is to buy a larger container of plain (almond- or soy-based) yogurt and flavor it myself with maple syrup, vanilla extract, and fruit!

Sounds like you live in Australia? In the US we have a store called ‘Sprouts’ which sells the best vegan yogurt. I once bought literally 15 different brands/flavors of vegan yogurt and the Sprouts store brand vegan was by far the best of them all. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that you have a Sprouts there as well.

Hey, keep in mind that any food that we get as a replacement for something we used to have will probably require some time of adaptation just because it's different and we're expecting something else. So if you find something that's at least acceptable, try to spend some time getting used to it, and you'll probably end up acquiring a taste for it.

Extra firm tofu!! I double blend it with a pinch of sea salt sweetener and lemon juice. I do a lot of lemon juice to make it lemon yogurt but most recipes call for a tsp or two. In that case I would simmer berries or something to make a syrup and flavor it that way either blending it in or layering. Just let it set overnight and It thickens up. Oh and sometimes I add cashews if I have any to make it creamier but imo it doesn’t need it.
