Question I just ate something that I did not know was non-vegan

My mom made this bomb ass vegan cheesecake and EVERYTHING in it was vegan except I NEVER knew that C&H sugar was not vegan… they use animal bone char to process it. This is the first time my mom has made some vegan dessert for me so I feel like if I don’t finish it, it is going to discourage her more from going into a plant based/vegan lifestyle etc . On the other hand I feel nauseous because of how guilty and gross I feel because I ate that. What do I do?
Edit: WOW people really got their panties in a twist abt this. I am still a minor and only a year vegan, I was asking a simple question ABOUT SOME DAMN SUGAR, some redditores really are just absolutely miserable. Thank you to the few that actually helped though 💕💕
Not answering any more stuff because some people are being annoying and bringing up unnecessary stuff when all I asked for is coping, I am aware it happens to the best of us, this was a learning mistake. Next time I will know and if it is avoidable I will avoid it.

Edit #2: if eating sugar that is processed through animal bone char does not raise demand, does that mean eating non-vegan jello or candies with gelatin also not raise demand? Actual question I am not being sarcastic etc.

My idea of a perfect vegan is doing your absolute best to be a vegan if you are aware that something is in your personal control and you can change it. Obviously you are still vegan if you accidentally ate a bug or like me ate a brand of (I think) non-vegan sugar. That was my whole point. I wasn’t trying to to start an argument.

Question Coming from a non vegan, which milk alternative is the best?

I'm such a chud bro I've been thinking about how milk only comes in humans when women are pregnant and it JUST clicked that they probably do the same thing to cows aswell man....

I feel ill bro which milk alternatives is the closest to cow milk that you guys could recommend? There's loads of different types at my local Sainsbury's like soy milk, oat, and others but I got no clue and they're expensive too so I don't wanna risk not liking them.

It just feels sickly to me now idk. Cow milk is weird as hell the more I think about it now. Can't believe babies and stuff drink it and that's normal too. We aren't cows bro this is weird

Edit: there wasn't any full fat oatly at my locals, so I bought the whole version instead-- just for tea.

Made a cup today and it didn't taste too bad. Just has an aftertaste I'll have to get used to.

Same with soya, but soya was much more similar to cow's than I anticipated. Both of them have different aftertastes but I think I can get used to it.

I don't know about fully becoming vegan or anything in the near future, but I'm gonna start getting the hell away from animal dairy products like this now. Not going to fully boycott foods containing dairy yet either. Hopefully someday if I can get over my picky habits 😅

Question My daughter is bringing her boyfriend (vegan) home to meet us for 3 days. I want to make him feel very comfortable and well fed while he's here, but this is new to me.

1.0k Upvotes

What are some filling, normal-looking meals that won't make him feel like he's eating at some fancy health food place? I just want the kid to feel welcome and not have to worry about finding something to eat. I want to make sure he doesn't go hungry or feel awkward about his diet choices.

My usual go-to meals are pretty meat-heavy so I'm kind of lost.

Question Other vegans, do you kill bugs?

I've been vegan for about 5 and a half years. I hate killing bugs. I think I've just got no good reason to kill them. They're creatures too, even if their level of consciousness can be and is constantly debated. I walk around ants on the pavement and catch moths and fruit flies with a pot and card and release them outside. I won't ever kill spiders either, despite being deathly afraid of them.

But I have a silverfish problem in my bathroom at uni. It's not THAT bad, but they keep coming back, and I'm starting to wonder if I'm an idiot for just throwing them out the window and not killing them. I really don't want to even though they freak me out a little but a lot of the advice claims you have to kill them to solve the problem.

I guess I'm not really asking to be told what I should do. Realistically I'll probably just keep avoiding killing them and deal with the slightly gross issue. Maybe that's nonsensical. But I am just very curious what other vegans do regarding troublesome bugs, whether you ever kill any or not. Please share!

Question Are vegetarians really "worse" than meat eaters?

I've heard it so many times from other vegans & I don't understand. I don't engage in those convos bc I was a veggie for 34 yrs before going vegan recently, it was down to ignorance on my part.. I really thought as long as the dairy was pasture-raised or free range I wasn't causing any suffering, I obv learned I was wrong.

But could someone kindly explain the logic that a vegetarian is doing more harm than meat eaters?

Question What shocked you to find out it wasnt vegan?

hi everyone! baby vegan here. in my journey of steering clear of animal products or anything made using an animal, I've come across some foods/products that kinda shocked me to know they weren't vegan. examples being most red wine isnt vegan, and a lot of cleaning products are tested on animals.

so I would love to know what products/food/drink shocked you to find out wasn't vegan?

Question Right-wing vegans, what's your deal?

Okay, first off, I'm not here to start a fight, or challenge your beliefs, or talk down to you or whatever. But I'll admit, it kind of blew my mind to find out that this is a thing. For me, veganism is pretty explicitly tied to the same core beliefs that land me on the far left of the political spectrum, but clearly this is not the case for everyone.

So please, enlighten me. In what ways to you consider yourself conservative/right-wing? What drove you to embrace veganism? Where are you from (I ask, because I think conservatives where I'm from (US) are pretty different from conservatives elsewhere in the world)?

Again, I'm not here to troll or argue. I'm curious how a very different set of beliefs from my own could lead logically to the same endpoint. And anyone else who wants to argue, or fight, or confidently assert that "vegans can't be conservative" or anything along those lines, I'll ask you to kindly shut your yaps and listen.

Question Intersectionalists: what are your thoughts on the leftist subreddit banning veganism?

I've heard that it's important to have an intersectionalist mindset for veganism, but I keep seeing other movements and groups banning or shunning veganism. What are your thoughts on the leftist sub banning veganism? Is it fair because veganism and leftism aren't inherently overlapping? Do you think they should be linked together?

Genuine question that I'd like to learn from. Thank you!

Question How do you deal with your close ones not converting despite all the information that made you switch?

I have been vegan for around 2 months now and I just can't wrap my head around why people I see as equals - my friends and family, could NOT want to stop supporting all these animal-product companies. I get that a large portion of these products taste good/feel good but isn't morality more important than earthly pleasures? How do you deal with close ones that don't want to convert? I know no vegan irl and it just makes me feel lonely and isolated.

Question “Vegans are right, I just accept I’m a hypocrite and keep eating meat. Nobody’s perfect after all”

Interesting to see a lot more comments/posts like this after the follow up from Billie Eilish, compared to before where it seemed like people were actually trying to provide arguments. Is this progress?

How would you respond to this? Is there a convincing way to persuade someone to act on their morals?

I could only imagine making a comment like this if I thought I was morally wrong in a sort of minor inconsequential way, like a little lie, or not recycling - which makes me think that talking about the magnitude of animal suffering might be the way. What do you think?

Question veganism and gaming

this might seem like a weird question but do you guys try to be vegan when you're gaming?

I'm talking about all forms of gaming like RPGs where you can eat different foods, Hunting Simulators where you kill, Cozy Games like Stardew Valley where you have a farm and so on. Especially in games where you can create your own character and can resperent yourself in a game.

I'm vegan since a few month now and a gamer since I can think. Before I didn't worry about it at all but recently it got me thinking. Technically the stuff in games is not real so no animals get hurt or exploited. I mean it could be a fun challenge to play Skyrim, Witcher and Crimson Desert in a vegan way. But it feels a bit weird to cook a steak in Minecraft or shoot chickens in Counter Strike. In some way or another it also still represents the objectification of animals but it's also just a game...

What do you people think about this?

Question Hospital is making me eat meat despite being more than able to accommodate. Should I refuse?

Disclaimer: I’m not looking for health advice nor am I promoting unhealthy eating habits, so please don’t remove my post

—

I’ll try to keep it short:

I’m 17. I’ve wanted to be vegetarian/vegan/limit meat since I was ~11. I hate myself for never being able to stick with it. When I was 14, I developed anorexia, and I was sent to a treatment facility May 11th.

Several weeks ago, I watched a video that opened my eyes like no other pro-vegetarian/vegan video had. Since then, my distress over eating meat & other animal products has grown.

I keep begging my dietitian to allow me to be vegetarian/vegan. I even said I’d accept a slow transition. No one in my treatment team will listen to me. They say I need to “stop being a pain in the ass”, and I can go vegetarian 6 months post discharge IF I stay in recovery. I can’t keep eating animals for > 6 months!

Maybe this wouldn’t be so hard if there wasn’t a vegetarian in our group who they accommodate >100%. They don’t understand how hard it is to do something that goes against your values while watching someone with the same values not have to.

Technically, they can’t make me eat meat. I can just refuse, and I’ll be given a dietary supplement instead. What’s stopped me is other consequences and fear of letting people down. Now that I’ve transitioned to PHP, the only privilege they can take from me is hot sauce. I’m just worried about everyone being upset with me because they already kinda are, but maybe it’s worth it. Maybe they’ll finally accommodate me if I hold out.

—

Sorry, that was a lot. Here’s my question:

Do I “restrict” meat, face the consequences of “restricting” but do what I believe is morally right, or do I eat meat and please everyone around me while holding onto guilt?

—

Edit:

Wow, I was not expecting to get this many comments so quickly. Thank you all for taking the time to read this and give your advice. It’s very much appreciated.

I’ve read a very wide range of responses, everything from: “sue the hospital” to “quit your whining”. I was surprised by how many people had been in a similar situation or were vegan with an ED. The majority of these people recommend just sticking with the program.

I hope I don’t upset anyone, but I think what is best is complying with the hospital for the meals I eat there and pushing for vegan, if not free range options for the meals I eat outside the hospital. And yes, I’m aware that it’s only marginally better, but please understand: I’m not eating animals/animal bi-products bc I want to. I wish so much I could go 100% vegan rn, but my dietitian is not allowing me to.

I’m very excited to discharge from the hospital and have the freedom to be fully vegan. Thank you all for your advice 🩷

Question Why are people genuinely so hateful/spiteful of veganism?

I will note, I am not vegan. However, I do support veganism and everything under the vegan umbrella.

This has probably been asked millions of times, so i won't be shocked if this gets deleted.

Like for example, I saw a video of someone sneaking meat into their wife's food. It was pretty satire (or atleast i HOPE it was satire, but it seemed fake). I go to the comments and people are saying stuff like "vegans are so stupid" and "eat the vegans!!", "vegans are so dumb trying to make plants look like meat"

Genuinely makes no sense?? Like i get disliking the vegans that harrass others for not being vegan/vegans who are hateful but you arent better than those people if you do the same to vegans who arent hateful.

Idk, just something ive noticed and it annoys me. Also sorry for my shit ass grammar.

Question I’m (F) moving in with my partner (M) this month, I need help with protection NSFW

I don’t take birth control, haven’t had sex in 2 years and have only been taking it when I was with him. We’re long distance and now we’re able to move in together, but every birth control out there is not vegan. We’re considering going for condoms although we don’t know how we’re gonna feel about them yet (never used them). I’d really appreciate it if you could suggest me some good ones that are vegan, because I heard that some condoms are not vegan. Thank you!!

(Btw, we’re looking for something available in the US)

Question Does anyone else feel like being vegan has somewhat alienated you from your cultural foods?

1.7k Upvotes

I'm black, and meat, cheese, and butter feature prominently in many latino and black dishes. A family member of mine recently insinuated that my veganism was akin to me turning my back on my cultural heritage. It wasn't said maliciously, but it hurt nonetheless. The situation went down like, "So, you don't HAVE to eat only vegies for medical reasons, right? You're CHOOSING not to eat any of the foods that your family has prepared for you then?"

Has anyone else dealt with this?

EDIT: More than 25% of people are downvoting this post and I'm genuinely curious as to why. It seems like any post discussing the real challenges of veganism isn't well received on r/vegan. Maybe next time I'll just crosspost from r/happycowgifs to get some positive attention. lol

I do appreciate those of you who have taken the time to comment though. Truly, thank you. I'm reading each and every comment.

Question Is it rude to bring your own food when visiting others?

Hi! Kinda newbie vegan teen here (I went vegetarian around febuary this year and became vegan around 1 or 2 months later).

My family went to my grandparents place for my grandmas birthday yesterday and I brought my own vegan food and dessert since I knew the rest of my family would not eat vegan. When we were sitting down and eating, my stepmom told me that it can be percived as rude to bring your own food when visiting other people (sidenote, when we were leaving home, before going there, I asked my dad if I should bring my own food and he said that was a good idea so I thought it was ok) and everyone else seemed to pretty much agree.

Is it really that rude of me? I thought that it was at least better than the people we are visiting having to cook a whole seperate meal just for me.

EDIT: I am a very picky eater, I'm autistic and probably have ARFID so even if the host would fix something vegan, there is a high chance I won't really like it (Although I would definitely try it at least)

TLDR: The title. Also sorry if this was messy or my english is bad, it's not my first language so if there is something you dont get, feel free to ask.

Question Why are so many vegans against vaccines?

1.4k Upvotes

Recently I came across this post on instagram account @plantbasednews (quite popular) where this guy was basically saying that there’s some vegan vaccine etc. but what really surprised me were the comments. It was flooded with antivaxx comments, there was just so many of them I couldn’t believe it. Aren’t we like with science or stuff like that? Isn’t there enough proof that vaccines work? I kind of thought we aren’t those crystal worshiping guys lol. Why is it like this?

Keep it polite down there

Question Is there a vegan subreddit with less condescension?

Genuine question, as the snark is too much to handle sometimes and I’d like to go about my day not just seeing a bunch of petty bickering. I get that animal rights are important (obviously, I’m vegan) but some of the people here respond to everything so extremely rudely you’d think their entire family was tortured to death by everyone else here.
