Don’t get me started about Peter Thiel. He’s going around talking about how the Antichrist will use the surveillance state and AI to secure power. Basically everything he’s doing. But he totally promises he’s not evil even though he wants to subvert democracy and named his company after an artifact used to commit evil. He’s totally the good guy and just developing the technology before the Antichrist does. Not sure how that helps but just trust he won’t use it for evil. The real Antichrist is Greta Thunberg. Ignore the fact she’s not doing anything he just said the Antichrist would do. She’s totally the one.

When tech CEOs read about sci-fi dystopias they aren’t looking at them from the perspective of the everyman but on how the elite are doing compared to everyone else. It’s not even about absolute well being but what future makes them feel strong and powerful and better than everyone else. Then what seems like a terrible idea to 99% of us might seem like a brilliant idea to them. I very much think some of them are inspired by sci-fi in the worst possible way. Even when the technology in the sci-fi ultimately kills us all the tech CEOs might get inspiration. If it’s considerably powerful they might have a lot of hubris and think I can control this and it’s worth the risk. I think there are governments and CEOs that would love to build SkyNet for example. It doesn’t work out well in terminator but that’s a movie. In real life they think they can control it and use it for world domination.

Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinda?
In-universe, what happened was that a hacker sent a worm out into the internet which would seek out corporate intranets, break into them, and then export all of their data out onto the internet. The intent was to dump their dirty laundry right out on the front porch for all to see.
He didn't know that many of the corporations had developed true AIs for military use, intending them to be used as weapons. His worm scooped them up along with everything else, and dumped them out onto the internet. The AI weapons, programmed to destroy data...did that.
This lead to abandoning the global internet. Which, ironically, allowed the corporations that he was trying to destroy to deploy smaller private subnets all over as the new means of communication, putting basically all networking completely under corporate ownership. Womp womp.

Already a few years ago I pointed out that as long as they're yoked in the form of kill switches, control over power generation and resource extraction, the worst outcomes would be impossible.
Within a few days I realized and had to concede that the hubris of the wealth class would lead to the removal of each and every one of those yokes, in the form of ceding control over parts of the supply chain to non sentient simulacrums in order to try and cheat code their wealth growth.
I don't believe the current iterations of AI are anything close to sentient, but I do believe that the biggest danger has always been the actions of bad actors all along the way.

I go back and forth on this. It can be hard to remember that there are a lot of objectively good things that have come from the internet. As a gay person coming of age in the 2000s, the internet made me realize I wasn’t alone and helped me feel comfortable with my sexuality. I think that’s one reason why gay rights took such a major leap forward in that time period. Also simply being able to learn more about people and communities across the world. Things were very different when access to information was filtered through a select few news papers and channels, although they all took their journalistic integrity much more seriously at the time. Sadly, all the positive has been twisted by connecting groups that shouldn’t be connected and allowing people to find whatever info they want to justify their opinions regardless of whether that info is correct. But people would do that without the internet.
54
u/eat_my_ass_n_balls 19d ago
The internet of the late 90s and early 2000s was a magical place. It’ll never be recreated.
Hope, novelty, excitement, earnest collaboration and open communication, hobbies, games, music, interests. No social media. No corporate enshittification. No subscription models or licensing fees.
People who didn’t experience that have NO way of understanding what it was like and what we lost.
→ More replies (3)24
u/Joessandwich 19d ago
There really was much more earnestness too. People would make the effort to create a website, which wasn’t a super simple task back in the day, about their specific interest. And people then had to find it and actually make an effort to come back. So people were way more participatory. Now it’s just scrolling slop feeds and reacting to what we get fed.
I also miss early Reddit. Before it became well known it also had a much more earnest feel to it with a community full of our stupid inside jokes as well as Secret Santas and teacher supply drives. Now it’s become a mess of content farming and a tool for marketing.

I won't say their models aren't great, but they're just LLMs. An LLM cannot become a real swarm or agi, you need someone telling it to do shit, but cloudflare is now relatively good at blocking them out. Re-Federate the internet.
If it was structured as originally intended rather than everything going through virginia so they can spy on the world, you just stop talking to the the places where there are bots.
If there is one on your local town's network, you physically go there and remove it.
If the software is too complex to patch, stop using enshittified techbro nonsense and go back to something more basic.
If the next town over is full of bots, suddenly they can't buy anything from anywhere else in the country until they clean it up because their /8 or whatever the ipv6 version is is blocked.
But I guess instead we could ban things like matrix, regular fucking email, or fediverse to "protect the children", like we are now.

The real problem is that we are allowing bots more and more autonomy outside of the internet. Not only are chatbots causing psychosis but agents/bots are controlling drones, robots, cars, etc. Hegseth and Orange marmalard seem intent on creating their own W.O.P.R. Openclaw and Llama LLM are both open source, I don’t necessarily need a large frontier model to launch an attack. We’re falling into the Descartes trap of assuming that “supreme intelligence” is moral and good. But I wouldn’t call it “intelligence”. It’s super educated but not intelligent. We feed it billions of data points and teach it to answer by collating those data points into an educated response but it has no intelligence to know the consequences of a response. Look how easily Musk manipulated Grok into mecha Hitler because he didn’t like the responses. LLMS have no capacity for empathy, shame, guilt, accountability and no sense of mortality.

How are youtubers using machine code trained on our very behavior? If you're watching some shill of person who has more ad time than content in their video... I don't know what you expect. Like Veritasium for example. Those are only a small handful of channels though, unless you have a comprehensive list?

Is the only way to prevent it going to be to have our own AI botnet controlled by good guys? I've seen how those movies turn out.

Sounds expensive. Who's funding the electricity bill for that many bots?

Everyone. In this scenario they're infecting your devices. Everyone with a computer, cellphone, smart device, etc would be running it.

I think this is already happening. Especially here on reddit, I'm seeing a ton of troll traffic that's extremely similar in language, phrasing, and even with some of the exact same grammatical errors on post after post, in all kinds of disparate subs. It's shutting down and maligning honest discourse in a ton of places.

yup
it has really amplified in the past 6m or so, looking like we've hit the visible curve of the exponential increase in this type of shit

What you're talking about is just plain old spam bots. They've been around for as long as there have been discussions happening online, they're just more accessible and easier to create/run and especially much easier to generate variations of the message you want to push.
The Internet Research Agency affair was published over 11 years ago and one of their main tools was using bots to post and increase or reduce visibility of certain topics.
What amodei is talking about is a distributed botnet, but without a human C2C nexus. But that's also nothing new, it's basically a form of a computer worm and those have been around since the 70's. Self-modifying and polymorphic worms have been around for the better part of a quarter of a century at this point.

Hey. So.
Don't release an API!
human verification, no API access. Limit number of requests to like, 100 a minute?
Basically just put limitations on it that a human perfectly fits into but messes up bots. This seems like too simple a solution? Explain to me why we can't just make a website function like it's 2010 before we had all the nonsense.

Ok so once it takes over the internet what is it going to do with it?

Whatever. The internet is already bloated with bot farm bullshit and AI generated stuff pushed by bots with a human agenda. At the end of the day, a human set them to task. Find the human or group and the problem goes away when they do. It’s not some fucking ghost floating around unattached to a device. People are stupid.

So he's saying two possible things.
They're so irresponsible they can't stop it, which means they should probably be in prison for gross negligence.
They will facilitate it, in which case they should be in prison.
Only open ai, anthropic, and governments currently have the compute capable of that

Then pull the plug, now. Stop Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot right away before it gets too late. Except we can’t because we’re too far into this Faustian bargain and we’re only now trying to slow down now when we should have done it when ChatGPT was nothing more than a concept.

They said this 6-12 months ago.
But, regardless, does anyone feels that this whole AI doomscape is self-inflicted and we have the means to head it off, but we just won’t because we lack the willpower to do so?

Nobody asked for this “type” of AI. The long horizon LLM that is trained in the veins of infinite paper clip making story. There are other safe AI like DeepMind’s AlphaGo and protein folding model that are fine. These are deliberate decisions made by the people in those companies. They should be in jail.

He keeps speculating about problems his technology will one day create. It’s already real creating problems TODAY. We don’t need to imagine.
