When this all happens my collection of outdated but still fully functioning electronics is gonna be so handy. Short wave radio. VHS, CD’s and DVD’s. Hell, I snagged an entire PBS stations analog broadcasting equipment like a decade ago. Turning on one amplifier I think I could broadcast an old school UHF signal about a mile with my current antenna setup. Assuming the FCC will have its hands full and all internet based electronics will become obsolete I might just become an apocalypse pirate tv station. Just hope my surrounding area is cool with Indiana Jones movies and me ranting on commercial breaks to say “I told ya so”.

If it comes down to being an "apocalypse" scenario. You do not want to broadcast uhf radio signals from your location... considering the thing causing the apocalypse can see it as easily as you can see the sun rise.

I was assuming we’d just unplug all the servers when this happens and start over from scratch? Which would take some time…so until then I feel like analog would be king again for a bit. If we’re talking terminator shit I’m just packing up and moving into the woods

While I'm certain the LLM apocalypse won't happen, if it did, you just know some crypto bros are going to refuse to shutdown their mining rigs in the hopes of making bank.

The AI would just pay lobbyists (or mercenaries) to keep you from unplugging them.

The only way around that is to make money meaningless. Good luck dismantling capitalism.

Nah, not worth the hassle imo, humans will wipe out each other after 2 weeks without internet

AI doesn’t operate in the real world. It’s like if Skynet pumped out NFTs instead of robots

That's really cool. What sort of power requirements would a 1-mile UHF signal be in watts/kw?

Not much. Less than 5w if your antenna is at a good high point. Even less if you use the VHF band. Right now I can reach about a block with rabbit ears straight out of the modulator (no external amplification) broadcasting to a row of old tube TV’s I have set up for testing in the garage. I have a little Sony Watchman that pulls in the signal around the block. Hooked to the big antenna (definitely with the amplifier) would get me into trouble in non-apocalypse times, but that setup hooked to my shortwave radio sends and receives for miles without issue. Different frequencies obviously, but I think a mile is def doable on VHF or UHF dual carrier for audio and video.

The Postman... in different media. We salute the upcoming Indiana Jones five-year marathon! (except the fourth movie. that one sucked)

Pretty sure you can manage that with a $25 handheld Chinese radio...

Definitely don’t leave out the “I told ya so”, it is so well deserved
