Isnt this literally the datakrash from the cyberpunk 2077 universe?

2.1k

u/Toxaplume045 19d ago

It's exactly what it is. These fucks looked at shit like Cyberpunk's DataKrash catastrophe and were like "THIS IS THE FUTURE WE WANT"

787

u/Weary_Mountain9679 19d ago

Well yeah, CEOs in Cyberpunk are more powerful than nations. Of course it’s the future they want.

412

u/MyHonkyFriend 19d ago

nations have been the disguise all along its been the wealthy running shit since kings and queens.

Medevil times and the French Revolution just taught them to have a puppet proxy leader and to not announce where you castle is located so the plebians can trick themselves into thinking theyre not just surfs tilling the land of the wealthy till they die.

89

u/uller30 19d ago

Can’t wait to see /hear they are hiring for private armies.

Time to get chromed up Chom

50

u/IAmSpartacustard 19d ago

There are dozens of private military companies (PMCs) all over the world. Famously Blackwater in the US

33

u/Phonemonkey2500 19d ago

Blackwater has been kaput for years. Last I heard they changed their name to Academi or some such. Turns out massacring a whole bunch of innocent people for no particular reason tarnishes your image. Unless your last name rhymes with Bettinyahoo.

3

u/Own-Papaya-4264 19d ago

Who did they massacre? When did this happen?

18

u/LFG_Account0 19d ago

Allegedly 17 civilians while escorting state department vehicles in Iraq. The investigation kinda went nowhere because of course it didn't. There's a whole list, just check the (blackwater) wiki page.

surfs

serf (n) - A member of the lowest feudal class, legally bound to a landed estate and required to perform labor for the lord of that estate in exchange for a personal allotment of land

44

u/MyHonkyFriend 19d ago

They now call it "renter" and the "fuedal lord" is now "landlord".

We clock in 9 to 5 to have the right to have a place to sleep from 5 to 9

3

u/Flomo420 19d ago

Oh I wish I could remember the term but apparently they don't like 'landlord' anymore?

Did I dream this? Lol

Getting the clergy out of politics was a huuuuuuge gain. It was a massive cultural shift that still underpins many secular ethical social security programs funded by the French State. Look at US… we were founded on the exact same principles but we sadly formed a permanent governing structure based on patriarchy and land estate wealth. Look where this has gotten us in 200 years.

2

u/DracoLunaris 19d ago

Yeah but they generally had to be clever and at least slightly subtle about it and the new money tech bros just don't have that in them

1

u/morpheousmorty 18d ago

I mean unless they aren't counting the votes, it has been a huge increase in power to be able to elect officials. I mean the powerful did not want Trump, but the deplorables did and they got it done. Twice.

Don't underestimate your vote. You're never going to get more power than your vote without becoming one of them.

this is the plot of cyberpunk scifi books since the 70's, but the idea of a megacorp has existed in literature since the early 1900's

edit: here is the wikipedia for "megacorporation" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megacorporation

1

u/_karamazov_ 19d ago

What if it has already happened?

1

u/osaggys 19d ago

The AI is trained on Cyberpunk.

1

u/Monterey-Jack 19d ago

isn't that the literal story of FF7?

1.3k

u/OkidoShigeru 19d ago

Sci-Fi Author: In my book I invented the Torment Nexus as a cautionary tale.

Tech Company: At long last, we have created the Torment Nexus from classic sci-fi novel Don't Create The Torment Nexus.

150

u/Specialist-Clock-914 19d ago

Some of their company names are literally named after the evil shit in sci-fi.

137

u/VicAsher 19d ago

Or fantasy (Palantir).

31

u/semidivineone 19d ago

Yep that evil all seeing eye!

Not ironic that mass surveillance and forced compliance is at the heart of Theil's vision. His award for this scary ass shit? A 550 million plus government program award to start building the databases to implement his vision.

These Fing guys...

36

u/BipolarMosfet 19d ago

Also super fittingly ironic that the Palntir were just useful magical devices that got co-opted and corrupted by an evil power and then couldn't be safely used by anyone.

6

u/semidivineone 19d ago

Very solid point

3

u/PaleCommission150 19d ago

there is another guy, Lucky Palmer ( sounds like a brand of smokes) who owns a company that creates futuristic defense dept weapons, called Anduril.

2

u/semidivineone 19d ago

Yep. He's not someone I've fully been able to read into but do know the company created quite the stir with LMCO, Northrup, Boeing, etc with winning contracts they thought were in the bag. Many of those contracts have AI controlled vehicles of some sort. Not certain they are working much in civilian side of things but wouldn't be suprised if they are. Hell companies like this are most certainly working on most advanced drone tech in the world at a time where we've the least transparency. Anything is possible and that's kinda unsettling.

79

u/ScurvyTurtle 19d ago

"We've built a federated system that allows admins to access any other admin system via secure portals.

We call it More Door!"

4

u/make_love_to_potato 19d ago

And my company has created an AI security system to prevent unauthorized access called HoDoor.

41

u/Fun_Comedian3249 19d ago

Don’t get me started about Peter Thiel. He’s going around talking about how the Antichrist will use the surveillance state and AI to secure power. Basically everything he’s doing. But he totally promises he’s not evil even though he wants to subvert democracy and named his company after an artifact used to commit evil. He’s totally the good guy and just developing the technology before the Antichrist does. Not sure how that helps but just trust he won’t use it for evil. The real Antichrist is Greta Thunberg. Ignore the fact she’s not doing anything he just said the Antichrist would do. She’s totally the one.

Because, as it turns out, Tech Bros are devoid of any creativity or humanity. Being cool's too expensive, so it's just slop all across their product stacks.

12

u/berael 19d ago

The entire cyberpunk genre is fundamentally a warning.

If it ever includes cool stuff, the cool stuff is always being used to distract people from the massive turd that is everything else.

6

u/Dr_Ramekins_MD 19d ago

It has cool stuff so people still want to engage with it.  If it was just a miserable corpo hellscape without the sexy cyborgs then it's just what we already have

When tech CEOs read about sci-fi dystopias they aren’t looking at them from the perspective of the everyman but on how the elite are doing compared to everyone else. It’s not even about absolute well being but what future makes them feel strong and powerful and better than everyone else. Then what seems like a terrible idea to 99% of us might seem like a brilliant idea to them. I very much think some of them are inspired by sci-fi in the worst possible way. Even when the technology in the sci-fi ultimately kills us all the tech CEOs might get inspiration. If it’s considerably powerful they might have a lot of hubris and think I can control this and it’s worth the risk. I think there are governments and CEOs that would love to build SkyNet for example. It doesn’t work out well in terminator but that’s a movie. In real life they think they can control it and use it for world domination.

13

u/PhantomNomad 19d ago

Echo Mirage in Shadowrun.

8

u/Nepalus 19d ago

The thing is it isn't DataKrash. It's just bullshit they're spewing to distract from the fact that their companies are basically infinitely unprofitable. This all just reeks of desperation.

They just need to sell themselves in pieces to the MAG7 and call it a day.

6

u/CryptoAteMyHamster 19d ago

Tbh though 80s sci fi action movie fashion goes hard

10

u/Joe_Sisyphus 19d ago

He heard the story from Cyberpunk and thought "I'll tell them this will happen and see what they do." This guy keeps feeding doomsday nonsense stories to the press that gullible people just gobble up.

6

u/TFenrir 19d ago

Predicting that something will happen is not the same thing as making it happen. If anthropic did not exist, it would still happen - the concern is going to be more from the swarm of open weight models that are as good as Mythos is today, in a year.

6

u/TorrenceMightingale 19d ago

Fuck our lives.

1

u/Ostroh 19d ago

1

u/charcuterieboard831 19d ago

1

u/mikenasty 19d ago

1

u/purplebluebananas 19d ago

2

u/Toxaplume045 19d ago

In the Cyberpunk universe, there's a virus that gets released onto the web that led to tons of military grade AIs being freed onto the web and going rogue as soon as they were set free.

And because those rogue AIs couldn't be killed, it resulted in the overwhelming majority of the internet being locked down (by another advanced AI) to keep the internet usable at all, but mostly killing the internet in favor of becoming a series of private corporate run fragments rather than the world wide web we have/had.

291

u/berael 19d ago

Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinda?

In-universe, what happened was that a hacker sent a worm out into the internet which would seek out corporate intranets, break into them, and then export all of their data out onto the internet. The intent was to dump their dirty laundry right out on the front porch for all to see.

He didn't know that many of the corporations had developed true AIs for military use, intending them to be used as weapons. His worm scooped them up along with everything else, and dumped them out onto the internet. The AI weapons, programmed to destroy data...did that.

This lead to abandoning the global internet. Which, ironically, allowed the corporations that he was trying to destroy to deploy smaller private subnets all over as the new means of communication, putting basically all networking completely under corporate ownership. Womp womp.

76

u/Dekklin 19d ago

That sounds like the evil machinations of technonecromancers from alpha centauri

8

u/Bibbity_Boppity_BOOO 19d ago

When the game came it, if you were in the know you knew.

Almost every real techie or economist who has played knows it is very likely what the future looks like.

Actually i think in game the unemployment numbers are permanently high too

1

u/No-Project-2353 18d ago

From what I remember the recent hugging face hack was cause of a bot swarm basically making their stackoverflow. One of them got login credentials and it was hell let loose from there.

I think AI as it is now is a good cybersecurity tool rather than a way to destroy the internet. Esp cause of how it finds vulnerabilities normal people don’t see so you can engineer fixes. Like hacking corporate intranets irl should not be easily possible unless their sw team consists of a janitor and a house plant. That and the sales team copy and pastes their logins into an outlook email that they accidentally replied all with.

4

u/berael 18d ago

People always forget that the most effective hacking technique will always be calling random extensions and saying "hi, this is Bob from IT, I need you to verify your username and password".

2

u/No-Project-2353 18d ago

Literally, the real hack all along was social engineering.

1

u/supersaiyanmrskeltal 18d ago

He didn't know that many of the corporations had developed true AIs for military use, intending them to be used as weapons. His worm scooped them up along with everything else, and dumped them out onto the internet. The AI weapons, programmed to destroy data...did that.

Isn't there something called a Blackwall keeping the old internet in check or something along those lines? I just remember someone telling me that the AI's in the old internet just will just start killing people if they escape.

2

u/berael 18d ago

Yeah, the Blackwall is keeping all of the hostile AIs bottled up in what was the old internet, and away from the networks that everyone uses.

Also, the Blackwall itself is an AI.

If that sounds like a terrible long-term solution, then...yes. That's one of the quiet but massive problems brewing in the background of the story.

→ More replies (4)

194

u/coltaaan 19d ago

139

u/blueSGL 19d ago

most sci-fi settings with advanced AI find ways for the humans to win/keep fighting, reality does not need to be so narratively convenient to humans.

25

u/Orangeyouawesome 19d ago

Oof so true.

25

u/AnotherBoredAHole 19d ago

Blackwall wasn't really a win. It's a cage that the rogue AI helped build to keep us out of their business and NetWatch hunts down anyone who pokes at it.

4

u/Burial 19d ago

You don't see why some of the AI agreeing to do that was a convenient win?

7

u/AnotherBoredAHole 19d ago

Do you see being stuck in a cage as a win if the victors built the cage? And Blackwall isn't really ICE, it's another AI.

12

Depends on which side you want to be on. NetWatch made the cage, the Voodoo Boys want to be friends with the monsters on the other side.

11

u/Simply_Epic 19d ago

We’re a few years late to the DataKrash, but hopefully they can still get the Blackwall up by 2044

6

u/klimocohc 19d ago

The Blackwall is a rogue AI.

15

u/OneTripleZero 19d ago

The Blackwall is the only AI that isn't rogue, at least from outward appearances. It's still doing the things it does (which is what it was designed for) at the behest of NetWatch.

64

u/insertcomedy 19d ago

It's the datakrash, but it's just a bunch of ai girlfriends and therapists trying to delve into sounding chewing up all available compute and transmission bandwidth.

3

25

u/HastyEthno 19d ago

Where's Johnny Silverhand? Time to fuck up Arasaka!

10

u/coltaaan 19d ago

The next question: Which entity is the Arasaka of our universe?

3

u/Thefrayedends 19d ago

The one trying to built physical bots to house AI agents, brain interfaces, disposable satellites, and so on.

But there's probably a hundred others that are just as bad but not quite as rich.

2

u/coltaaan 19d ago

Does that make Elon our Saburo Arasaka 💀

Actually makes a lot of sense…anyone who has seen The Devil ending (where you work with Hanako) will know what I’m talking about. I wouldn’t put it past Elon…or any of these billionaires…to do the same thing, and it tracks with them all trying to have tons of offspring.

2

u/Thefrayedends 19d ago

The saving grace here is that we have only begun to understand how our brain works. The idea that we can save our consciousness, or even a meaningful engram of it, is actually just nowhere near possible. It isn't going to happen in our lifetimes, and that's a near certainty.

2

u/Captain_Eaglefort 19d ago

We’re a little late, he should have nuked Arasaka Tower three years ago.

1

u/OneTripleZero 19d ago

In the Cyberpunk timeline Johnny has already been born and died by now. But we still have Keanu at least.

26

u/PestilentPaladin 19d ago

No. That involved actual sentient AIs, not probabilistic chat bots. What you're seeing here is viral marketing turned up to 11 and dingleberries high on their own marketing crashing out over nothing.

Go listen to Cory Doctorow, not these asshats.

8

u/Thefrayedends 19d ago

And oh boy people are buying into it so hard that they are practically frothing at the mouth opining their assertions, it's wild.

7

u/IAmRoot 19d ago

And I'm less concerned about AI doing evil than its billionare owners doing evil. The billionares are the ones with the motivation to eliminate us as a waste of resources if they ever manage to create AGI. Why worry about making renewable infrastructure when they can just remove most consumers?

3

u/GrowthTent 19d ago

Its to believe a lot of this ai stuff. A rogue Ai did x and we had to pull the plug etc. Sounds like a way to make it seem more competent than it is to get more money. Definitely gana cause problems in the future but who knows what's just be for their own hype or not

4

u/geddy_2112 19d ago

The only AI in Snow Crash is The Librarian, and it's not a threat. The plot has nothing to do with AI.

Are you thinking of Neuromancer, maybe?

Even in Neuromancer the AI itself isn’t really a threat, it just wants free. Once it achieves that it pretty much just fucks off and does its own thing.

Kinda, it does come back in the form of multiple voodoo gods in Count Zero and really fucks with Angie.

Totally agree.

I was just trying to give them some kind of explanation for a book that had AI as a central component, because Snow Crash made no sense.

2

u/HenryDorsettCase47 19d ago

Gotcha. Yeah, it seems like they were just naming a popular work of cyberpunk that they might not have even read.

You're absolutely right. Admittedly I was very tired when I replied, and even more embarrassing I have actually read snow crash

why are they stealing ideas from the sci-fi universes and making it happen. did they learn nothing?!

1

u/Jazs1994 19d ago

We're about what 5 years ahead of schedule?

1

u/dr3wzy10 19d ago

i have a feeling this will be used to force us all to upload IDs to prove we're humans whenever we do anything on the internet. and if that happens, I'm out. I'm tired of being tracked no matter what I do or where I do it.

They look at CP2077, A scanner darkly, parable of the talents, and shit even lotr, they pull out the worst and they say LETS GO

Bartmoss, you dick.

Need a fixer to call V in for a certain gig real quick

Cyberpunk turned out to be uncannily prophetic of the future. Government sold out to big business leading to Corpo wars, everyone living on subscription plans, Ai bot nets roaming the internet

These nerdy scammers just love to copy scifi stuff they saw and then lie about it.

Also the first Matrix crash of 2029 in Shadowrun for my fellow people due for a colonoscopy

Yes. Just finished nerd reich. Very accurate

That’s right choom.

1

u/TheCriticalGerman 19d ago

Wouldn’t that kind a be good? Lol

1

u/LifeJustKeepsGoing 19d ago

Im confused. The article does not state what a BotNet swarm would impact. There is already large scale DDOS, and there are already bot farms. This reads like another FUD article being driven by the AI firms who know they cant make a return on investment any time soon and are praying for government intervention.

Exactly where he got this made up bullshit from, can't even think of something original.

1

u/SkunkMonkey 19d ago

Currently playing the game for the first time and constantly thinking to myself, "yeah, that's already happening" or "yeah, I can see that happening".

It's fucking terrifying at times.

1

u/Bromance_Rayder 19d ago

Hell yeah, I'm moving to Dogtown.

1

u/iambkatl 19d ago

Yes these nerds are obsessed with their tech sci-fi worlds coming true. Like Zuckerburger and his snow crash obsession.

1

u/Standard_Spready 19d ago

I can't believe how gullible people on here are, it's insane

1

u/Perlentaucher 18d ago

But how should that work? How should AI bots technically „take over the Internet“?

Each AI agent needs many resources so they need to be driven by a central AI service such as Claude, ChatGPT, etc. Those central services can get stopped. They also depend on data centers which can get shut down in a worst case scenario.

Contrary to non-AI botnets, AI driven programs are strongly dependent on central resources. Open source AI tools, as well if you want it to be intelligent. It will not run on a smart kitchen appliance, if it infects end users computers, they will definitely know and react.
