The ball that hit the roof in MIL in Game 1 and the flyout by Austin Riley in ATL-LAD Game 2 are almost identical

It doesn’t prove anything, but rarely do you see such similar stats as the ball that Ty France hit that engendered so much controversy after hitting the roof of Miller Park (fight me on the name) and a ball Austin Riley just hit at UNIQLO field.

Both balls were hit by righties almost directly towards the left field foul pole.

France: 105.3 EV, 49* Launch Angle, 325 feet
Riley: 104.8 EV, 47* Launch Angle, 314 feet

Opinion Gary Sheffield Says Hitting is Easier Today (And Dwight Gooden says hitters are too comfortable)

Thumbnail

This recently popped up on my YouTube feed earlier today. Just an uncle and nephew commenting on the differences of today's game 🙃🙂

After seeing a video yesterday of Joey Votto saying that the .300 hitters of yesteryear would average around .240 or .250 in today's game, this managed to pop up in my feed.

Sheffield notes that today's pitchers are throwing chase pitches and not for strikes and Doc kind of affirms it by noting that pitchers are throwing 97 or 98 but aren't really throwing it.

Later, Doc says that hitters are too comfortable these days. This is what threw me off (no pun intended). Does he mean just an infrequency in HBP? Are they not seeing how pitchers are pitching less because the speeds are on average faster and bullpens are more capable of it than just your starters (a few) 25 and 30 years ago?

But one thing that I can say is that whenever this conversation comes up, the outliers of great pitchers are brought up in comparisons. It's a Pedro or Randy or a Miz or Skubal, but not a Tyler Mahle or a Freddy Garcia. So, is there any legitimacy to what they're saying?

That's not to say Sheffield still couldn't hit above average in today's game. But what are they not considering and what good points are they making? Is Sheffield right in not swinging at the breaking balls until necessary because today's pitchers don't throw for strikes anymore? Should more pitchers pitch inside like Doc says?

NOTE: I'm admittedly person who enjoys watches baseball but have been a lapsed fan with periods of devoted watching that lasts several years with cold stretches to where I don't follow it at all. But have been consistent since 2022/23 ⚾️🙂 So this may cloud my perspective.

Who would you compare 22 year old Jackson Chourio to?

• Upvotes

22 years old, incredible post season results, clutch hitter. Let’s say the brewers go insane and win the thing. Who is a HOF comparison to Jackson Chourio?
I can’t think of any.. he’s great at everything, not a HOF at anything yet but I hope that makes sense.

The MLB only gets involved in whether or not a stadium is open if there's disagreement between the two teams.

I saw a lot of comments saying that the Brewers don't decide whether or not to open the dome and that the MLB decides in the playoffs. The MLB only gets involved when there's disagreement between the two teams, and even then they default to the home team's preferences set out at the beginning of the season.

The Brewers rules are that the temperature should be above 60° throughout the game and no precipitation in the area.

Edit: I may be wrong about the teams needing to disagree, but the MLB definitely follows the home team's regular season rules.

"When the two clubs have different preferences, MLB consults its independent weather experts and follows the criteria used by the home club during the regular season."

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/38697938/astros-dusty-baker-not-thrilled-rangers-open-roof

"Commissioner Rob Manfred or his representatives will meet with the Blue Jays and crew chief Dale Scott prior to each game to discuss the situation. Toronto will provide MLB with access to its on-field operations department and the decision will be based on the same criteria Toronto uses during the regular season."

Analysis 7 players this season and postseason have have hit a fair ball to the pull side with exit velos between 105 and 106 and with launch angle between 48 and 50 degrees. Only 1 has resulted in a hit.

Image There have been 21 batted balls in Statcast history with the same launch angle and exit velocity as Ty France's roof ball, only 1 has gone further than the 342ft wall in Milwaukee (a Christopher Morel flyout in Colorado)
