Wells' hit was a blessing in disguise for the Rays as it helped make the decision to take Rasmussen out for the 9th,

For sure. As much as it sucked to lose the no-no, getting 8IP out of Ras and handing it over to Baker was the best thing to happen strategically.

He also helped you guys win for the next couple of games- not using pitchers.

u/BeatlesRays Tampa Bay Rays 15h ago
yeah unfortunately the extra day of rest somewhat minimizes that advantage

That's what I hope, but that Yankees bullpen scares me regardless of how good Rays pitching is. If the Yankees get a lead, it's gonna be tough.

I know that it’s how the vast majority of postseason games work for everyone, but it really feels like whoever blinks and gives up a run first in our games is going to lose. So goddamn hard to score off of either of our pitching staffs.

I wanted him to go for a CG so bad. I really believe he would have remained locked in after the hit.

not to mention Wells found a way to break up the no hitter while also somehow giving the Rays even more momentum lol

When you’ve Baker sitting on a week of rest with one day rest after, they were never going to let Rasmussen finish out the game, no need.

If it was a blowout I’d say we’re fucked but 1-0 games have been our whole thing all season

u/3rythros Tampa Bay Rays 15h ago
I doubt we see any blowouts this series.

Yeah the pitching on each side is incredible. Feels like we’re gonna see 5 of the most absolutely butt clenching games you’ll ever see

Yeah, definitely.
As tempting as it would be to declare you guys dead, It would just be dishonest given both the final score and the fact that NYY still had like 7 hard hit balls yesterday lol

not sure how I feel about the new postseason rules where the 1 seed starts the series up 1-0 but excited for game 1 tomorrow nonetheless!

It took me so long to get the joke I actually googled to see if there was news i missed that the MLB was moving to the NPB format.
Should have read the whole comment lol

Even if Wells had held to a double, we weren't gonna score any runs either way.
This team always finds a way to put up an ugly postseason loss, but it's time to put that behind us for a must-win game 2.

The Good:
Other than one bad pitch, the Yankees pitching staff completely held Tampa down, including Ryan Weathers basically looking like he never left, and about as good of a performance as you can ask for out of 2026 Gerrit Cole.
Call it cope if ya want, but we did have some good at bats vs Rasmussen early on, and if we can bring that energy against Peralta tommorow with Cam doing his thing, we can get the split out of the Tropicana games that we needed anyway
The Bad:
Unfortunately, we didn't hit the few mistake pitches Rasmussen threw early, and once he dialed in command of that backdoor pitch, he proceeded to do what he always does against us: carved us up like a Thanksgiving turkey. Really need to hope that the next time we see him it's not an elimination game
The Ugly:
I constantly fear this team beating themselves in the big moments and that Wells play yesterday is the perfect example
Maybe we don't bring him home anyway but Jesus Christ man
Anyway, nothing to do now but flush it and try to get the win tomorrow

I’m still buzzing about the game. What a showing from Ras. And keeps the rest of our arms fresh. If this series goes long I expect to see him again.
Offense needs to step up though. Schlitler is gonna be a tougher nut to crack and I don’t think we can go in expecting to win another 1-0 game. Really feels like game 2 is a must win for the Yanks, gotta put something on the board early. We take it on Monday and I just can’t see them taking 3 in a row against us.
Series has been as good as advertised through one game. Rays Up!

We’ve been in games like this all season. The offense being dreadful and basically asking the pitching to be perfect until they luck into one is standard practice.
That being said, Rathmussen is a top 3 cy young candidate so expecting anything less than a stellar performance was a shower dream.
The only saving grace for the Yankees is that they did shut down the rays offense for the most part, but that’s more of a confirmation of what was already known, you have the pitching advantage, which was obvious going into it.
As for the next game? Peralta is also very good but I hope we can at least put some pressure on him other than some dumb walks here and there. Make him actually have to get some outs and by proxy produce some offense. I expect cam to be great. Maybe not go 7 no hit innings, cause I expect the rays to foul off a ton of pitches and be pests in that way, but six and a third strong is more than realistic for him.
It was always gonna be a tough series

The BJs went from game 7 of the World Series to last place, largely because of overpaid vladdy.
Just sit this one out for a bit homie

Probably not the person you want to be using after the year he and y'all had

Dalton Rushing and Jo Adell had more homers at Rogers Centre than Vladdy this season. Their current teams are also still playing for a championship, unlike Vladdy
