Both team’s bullpens were pretty damn impressive. The late inning Tatis and Manny AB’s were brutal. Tatis flailed at 3 straight pitches and Manny watched 2 middle-middle fastballs before whiffing at the 3rd off the plate.
Credit to the Brewers for settling in after Miz got knocked out with just 4 IP. Padres went 1-9 with RISP and 12 LOB. Ouch.

u/DopedScope338 Los Angeles Dodgers 15h ago
That Machado AB was baffling. I really wish I could've been privy to the thought process that led to taking both of those first two pitches.

Looked like me in The Show taking pitches until I get to 2 strikes in the count, and the pitcher knows it lmao
1
u/lurkANDorganize 11h ago
Maybe he was thinking about all the dirty injury attempts he's made against other players and wondering if he or tatis, the player who juiced, was the greater villain in the stadium.
Hard to say Machado.

Credit to the padres for fouling off every fucking 2 strike pitch for 4 innings
17
u/Cajun-Yankee Milwaukee Brewers 13h ago
Yeah credit where credit is due. It was clear their game plan was to foul off any fast ball in the strike zone and swing away at off speed pitches. The executd well, they racked up his pitch count and got 2 runs.
Honestly can't state enough how big that Chourio HR was. Completely changed the game, stole all the momentum the Padres had tediously built up.

u/Whatsdota Milwaukee Brewers 10h ago
That was insane. 30 fuckin foul balls in 4 innings, almost exclusively off 100+ pitches
25
u/TheMainEffort Milwaukee Brewers 15h ago
The brewers weren’t great with RISP either. Bases loaded, one out and yelich hits a shallow fly on the first pitch was brutal.
It felt like both teams got away with some mistakes and the padres just got away with one less thing.
I look forward to a long, stressful series.

A ceiling can be a roof but it isn’t always
2
u/ELITE_JordanLove 13h ago
This is probably the answer. Maybe it’s whether it’s the same general plane of material? You’d probably not wanna buy a house that has the living room ceiling also being the roof, but for a stadium that’s ok.
11

3
u/uberklaus15 San Diego Padres 10h ago
Also, why is it called the "roof" of your mouth? It should be the ceiling of your mouth.

2

Well when it’s open, it’s outside. So maybe it’s always outside even when closed
3
2
u/InevitableAfraid5111 Milwaukee Brewers 15h ago
Now we're getting philosophical. Should a roof that opens and closes be called something else? Is Am Fam the world's most expensive convertible?
9
u/Zeke688 San Francisco Giants 15h ago
Is it a window?
I don’t think it can be a convertible without wheels.8
2
u/InevitableAfraid5111 Milwaukee Brewers 15h ago
There are convertible sofas though....so it might still work.....or we could put the stadium on wheels and have home games wherever we go.
1
2
u/ImaManCheetahh Los Angeles Dodgers 15h ago
counterpoint- if I’m in the attic and I bump my head, I bumped my head on the roof. The ceiling of the house is underneath me.
2
u/ELITE_JordanLove 13h ago
I think I agree with this take; a roof includes the immediate surface on the opposite face inside that is on the same plane (ish) as what faces outside, but if there’s a large gap between the top of the room and the material that actually faces outside it’s a ceiling.

Were the Brewers playing under different rules last night? If not then let’s calm down and move on. It’s really annoying when people complain about rules only after they come up. The rule was always there!
25
u/Doodenmier Milwaukee Brewers 13h ago
Apparently, there have been three instances of the ball hitting the roof in Miller Park history. All three instances were caught by a Brewers outfielder for an out.
It's ultra rare, but with precedent. It's just crazy how it visually looked like a potential homerun, but was curving enough to realistically be a foul, and unlucky enough to hit a beam to drop it at the warning track instead of projecting it just a little further to the wall
4
u/zinger565 Milwaukee Brewers 10h ago
Given Chourio's jump and the direction he was running before the deflection, I'd wager that was gonna curve foul.

I can both move on to today and think a ball hitting the ceiling counts as a ball in play is a stupid rule. Walking and chewing gum at the same time is a thing
1
u/18khcl Milwaukee Brewers 13h ago
While I agree the rule isn’t perfect, hitting a towering fly ball is something that shouldn’t be completely ignored (called dead or foul). Had the Padres (or any team) have tying run on third, the ball hitting the ceiling would have been a game tying sac fly. If you just call that a foul and the batter strikes out the next pitch, then people would be mad too.
I don’t have a better rule for this, I am just saying that it’s hard to come up with a better rule.
1
u/GaryTheCabalGuy San Diego Padres 13h ago
The ball might have gone foul on its own if not for the ceiling. That's the issue. We can't know what actually happened without the ceiling there which is exactly why the play should be dead as soon as it happens. It's much more logical than just saying the ball is still in play which is the version of the rule that makes the least sense

u/Magictank2000 New York Yankees 14h ago edited 14h ago
the NFL rules for similar stuff results in a replay of the down it happened on. Not sure why the ground rules in roofed stadiums call for it to be in play, should just be foul or a dead ball
15
u/BaseballsNotDead Seattle Pilots 14h ago
The ground rules for every roofed stadium regarding a ball hitting the roof is the same except for the D-Ring in Tropicana and that's only because it's physically impossible for a ball to hit the D-Ring and not be a home run.

8
u/ArthurMorgansInhaler Milwaukee Brewers 14h ago
Exactly. You knew nothing about it before and now, like everyone who wants it to be a homerun, the data is wrong despite it literally being accurate 99.999999% of the time. This was rhe 0.000001% time it was wrong though.
8
u/ArthurMorgansInhaler Milwaukee Brewers 14h ago
Because that person was making shit up and basing it off his "eyes" during the game. Said person also didn't even understand how spin could push the ball more forward after hitting the beam.

- At the end of the day if we’re going to lose a game in this series I expected it to be the Miz start.
- I have no idea if it was going to HR or not and frankly it doesn’t matter because rules were followed, but it is SUCH an annoying thing to happen.
- We can’t expect to win with that many LOB.
- Manny and Tatis had fine box scores but put together some terribly un-clutch at bats.
- Merrill can’t go 0 for 5.
- Even though we lost, I think our pitching was deployed perfectly.

Man, the discourse around this roof ball is already so exhausting. From both directions.
Last night got out of hand with everyone definitively claiming that was a no doubt HR and the Padres got robbed. Now this morning is getting out of hand with everyone using Statcast data to say definitively that it would not be a HR, and would have been an easy fly out.
The real answer is that it is a completely nuanced and isolated situation. Every batted ball behaves differently. That ball was to the dead-pull side with a ton of backspin. Statcast does not take that data into play.
Both Ty France and William Contreras, who had the best view of that batted ball, said the ball would have went into the stands. Contreras literally said the ball would have “broke the glass” of American Family Field.
Every member of the press that was in the press box last night (from both Brewers and Padres side) said the ball would have went into the stands.
We’ll never know with 100% certainty where that ball would have ended up had it not hit the cable. However, in my opinion, the ball was definitely heading foul. France’s body language also seems to indicate he knew the ball was hooking towards the line.
Anyone claiming that they know 100% that the ball would have been a HR, or that it definitely was not a HR, simply is not correct and is coming from a place of emotion.
Ultimately, the correct call was made. It’s unfortunate that this discourse will never go away and will overshadow what was a very well played and entertaining game from both teams.

u/dernhelm_mn Milwaukee Brewers 14h ago
This is an excellent and calm take. Small correction- the Brewers catcher is William Contreras, not Wilson.

I want the padres to win the series
I thought it was a HR off the bat
When they showed the replay of it hitting the beam and said it may be a HR I got excited
I, like the majority of MLB fans, am unfamiliar with the rules of this park. It turns out there are ground rules for this stadium for this exact situation.
They made the call based off those ground rules. It’s the correct call.
It’s not even controversial. It’s a call made for a specific situation by the book.

u/190octane San Diego Padres 15h ago
It’s controversial because the rules are stupid.

u/190octane San Diego Padres 12h ago
I’m not sure what the rule should be either, but the way it is doesn’t feel like a great option. At least for balls hitting the roof deep in the outfield.
To me the best option is a replay like it never happened, but getting called out doesn’t seem right to me.
4
u/HGpennypacker Milwaukee Brewers 13h ago
You should probably continue talking about it, that’ll help.

It doesn’t mean the rule was incorrectly applied though. It can be changes this offseason, but both teams played under the same rule.

Imagine hitting a popup to the shortstop and it’s a ground rule double. That would piss people off.
If it’s called a foul ball on a ball clearly going fair and home run it would piss people off.
There’s no solution that everyone would be happy with. These are the rules at every single domed stadium except Tampa which has its own set of specific rules.

We’ll never know where the ball would’ve landed. Could’ve been a fly out, could’ve been a homer, could’ve been a foul ball. The rules are the rules.
Now that that’s out of the way, I feel like both teams have to feel pretty confident after last night. Both generated a lot of scoring opportunities and one or two more clutch hits by either side could’ve broken things open and made this more like a 7-2 game or something.
Harris set the tone in his first at bat and it seemed like the Padres never let Miz have anything easy after that.
-3
u/Embarrassed_Sink_541 Milwaukee Brewers 15h ago
I'm pretty sure physics has said that it was a fly out in 29 of 30 ball parks.
8
u/ScaredOfWindow 15h ago
I haven’t seen any physicists comment on it. I just keep seeing the same Statcast report referenced, which only accounts for similar situations in its own era of existence. As such, I don’t think we can take it as 100% evidence.
I do agree that I don’t think it was going to a home run. But I still think it’s best to just say that we’ll never know for certain. I’d much prefer to talk about the stuff that we do know.
1
u/SwAeromotion Chicago Cubs 14h ago
This assumes it stays a fair ball which cannot be assumed by that same data.
4
u/_SomebodysCloser_ San Diego Padres 15h ago
Well, can’t really argue with a rule that was in place before the game started and both teams had to play under. We can argue all day about how stupid the rule is, but with it being in place all of the “Statcast this”, “trajectory that” really doesn’t matter. As a Padres fan, that fucking sucked and of course at a minimum I thought it should be a foul ball or “redo” instead of an out, but whatever.
Ultimately, we left wayyyy too many ducks on the pond, which is unacceptable in a game we pushed Miz out after 4 innings. That said, that was always the most difficult of the first three games to imagine us winning. Hopefully the boys place a giant chip on their shoulder and respond by doing what they always planned to do — steal game 2 in Milwaukee and return to Petco with home field advantage.

Thank you, this should be the take away from this. If the ball hit the roof and wasn't caught, causing France to be safe, it would still be bs. We don't know if it was foul or fair because of the roof either, so there needs to be so sort of new rule here.

How can you say that wasn’t going to be a home run? It literally hit the ceiling right above the warning track.

Because we know the velocity, and the launch angle. We can use math and physics to figure it out.

It still depends on the spin though

u/sixpackabs592 Milwaukee Brewers 15h ago
And that’s where the historical data comes in and only like 2 out of 40 hits of the same velo and angle got out (one was in Colorado one was with a tailwind)

u/GaryTheCabalGuy San Diego Padres 15h ago
So it could have been a HR is what you are saying and we just can't know for sure?
-1
u/sixpackabs592 Milwaukee Brewers 15h ago
Only if it had enough backspin to rip the cover off the ball, now I haven’t seen the ball after it landed so there’s a chance

u/GaryTheCabalGuy San Diego Padres 14h ago
Could have been a fly out, HR, foul ball, off the fence and not caught. Lots of things could have happened if the game was being played somewhere that didn't have an unnecessary barrier. Unfortunately, we will never know what actually would have happened

Unnecessary barrier??
It’s necessary for a stadium with a roof to have a support structure for the roof…

My man it was not above the warning track it was shallow-mid left field

I haven’t calmed down, and I hope your team loses today, and I think it could have been a home run. Thanks for asking.

If the padres win the series they need to win this game and take the next two at home. We can’t go back Milwaukee for game 5. Home field advantage in October baseball is a real thing.
I thought the padres came into the game with the right plan against their starting pitcher.

This is all gonna take away from what was otherwise a damn close game. Miz got bottled up. Bullpen held it together when the chips were down. Padres offense can be lethal.
I think this is either gonna go to 5 or we drop Game 2 and San Diego takes the series at Petco

Regardless of everything yesterday, the Padres imo had a “Will Not Win This Series” type of loss yesterday. It was always going to be tough for them to win this series but losing a game like that (on top of blowing a 2-0 lead and all the missed opportunities) is how I know they’re going to lose this series.

Why would many say that? There's a reason the brewers won 103 games and their bullpen had a lower ERA than the padres this year. Brewers have been the best team in baseball for a while. They just don't have mainstream stars because Wisconsin sports will always be hated on by the main stream talking heads

Yeah “losing 3-2 to Miz” is on paper not a bad result for them and what I expected, but the manner they lost and this whole controversy over the roof is so bad that I just don’t think they’re going to have a chance at winning this series anymore.

That’s the kind of loss that can make or break a team. Some teams rise to the occasion afterwards, and some just collapse

Feels like Milwaukee losing game one of the NLCS last year. You have GOT to steal that one.

I think any ball hitting the roof should be treated as a grand slam.

I'm in Europe and just got done watching the game. Going into the 9th inning all I could say was "incredible game on both sides". Just entertaining baseball. Glad we got the W but hoo boy, that was a nail-biter.
I was especially impressed with how the Dads handled Misiorowski. I wouldn't call it a bad outing at all but they just did not allow him to catch a break.
It was good to see Yelich get a hit!

What’s funny about the whole roof situation is that baseball fans have zero understanding of the roof's purpose, history and significance.

u/JeremyJammDDS Boston Red Sox 12h ago
The fact that not every stadium with a dome/retractable roof does not have rules for hitting the roof after years of dealing with Tropicana field is insane.
1
u/LighxningGG Los Angeles Dodgers • Hokkaido Nippon-Ham… 11h ago
They do.
Trop is the only one with special rules because they have obstacles that are lower.

It's a terrible heatwave down here so unfortunately, quality sleep in a house with no AC is a fantasy... At least we don't have to wait long for more baseball 🥳

u/Fantastic_Age_4440 Toronto Blue Jays 15h ago
In Toronto with the roof open that would have been a nice double - triple if a certain someone was in left field
1
u/Myshkin1981 Los Angeles Dodgers 15h ago
In Toronto that ball would have somehow managed to get lodged under the wall

u/teag2 San Diego Padres 15h ago
Roof nonsense aside, I still can't believe that Sheets didn't pinch hit for Harris in the seventh. Felt like the most obvious pinch hitter in the history of baseball
2
u/Holdmydicks San Diego Padres 14h ago
Nah. Give me Harris all day. Dude grinds out at bats has phenomenal contact and has been incredibly clutch since we called him up.
2
u/_SomebodysCloser_ San Diego Padres 14h ago
Eh, I don’t think it was that obvious. There was one on with one out, and Dustin’s had been a high OBP guy for us. With Manny and Merrill coming up after that spot in the lineup, the goal was to get another man on the base paths and move Tatis over so our bigger bats could bring him in.
