How is the new Fire Emblem?
I'm a big fan of the fire emblem games, but I will admit that I didn't like engage. I found the combat to be as engaging as ever, but the anime tropes and characters were really annoying. I liked 3H, though. My issues is that I heard the new one is heavily skewed towards the out of combat activities, particularly the social features. Is this true?

u/Choubidouu 9h ago
If you liked 3 houses you will probably like it too
My issues is that I heard the new one is heavily skewed towards the out of combat activities, particularly the social features. Is this true?
Yes, but it was already the case in 3houses, they did what people asked for.
Engage is probably the most "fire emblem" game of these 3, and the one which sold the less.

u/Camlicious 8h ago edited 2h ago
Social elements will stick with the franchise for probably at least the next 2 decades. The sale numbers of this series pre awakening pale in comparison to what it is now.
EDIT: Grammar

u/Blitzus 3h ago
This is a disingenuous argument.
Engage predominantly repelled people with its artstyle, memberberrying, and writing tone. Any lesson about "players wanted to run around the monastery more" that Nintendo may have learned is sophistry at best.

u/Divinum_Fulmen 1h ago
Engage also has the second weakest protagonist since Fates.
The world LITERALLY revolves around them. Like, the map is a damn circle of islands, with the protag in the middle. Their entire personality can also be summed up as :D

u/Drokeep 9h ago
Whichbis such a shame. Im enjoying fortune weaves but id kill for a good store with engages system. Even in weaves the story flows so well when the downtime is shorter

u/AphoticFlash 7h ago
My take is that fortunes weave would be a better game if they removed like 20% of the bloat, like map skirmishes, bird time, and bath/theater/service
23
u/Someonevibing1 7h ago
I love bird time I feel so accomplished whenever I see ‘perfect bird time’ even when it’s just ‘tilt your head’ 3 times

22
u/GrouchyMembership876 8h ago
I just didn’t get attached with the characters in Engage, which made me realize how much I love fully realized characters which I can get attached to. I think a true Fire Emblem game would also have great story and characters
7
u/TheShepard15 7h ago
I'd say it depends on what you liked about 3H. I have two friends who aren't buying Fortunes Weave because there's hardly any supports compared to 3H. They also like the shipping/pairing stuff from Awakening that Fortunes Weave lacks.
14
u/BarbarousJudge 6h ago
I wouldn't say there are hardly any supports. There are plenty. There are just quite a few characters that barely have any but the game also has nearly double the amount of characters. So while the amount of supports is reduced overall I think it's still more than fine and way less redundant at times. Some support conversations repeated character tropes way too much in 3H while FW trimmed them down to where most supports actually offer something new for the characters.
12
u/NotThePersona 5h ago
I think they could have dropped a solid 10-15 characters from the roster and no-one would have noticed.
That is time they could have spent fleshing out the other 50+ characters and supports between them.1
u/FunkyHat112 5h ago
That’s the real downside. The total amount of support conversations is somewhat alright, it’s just that it’s too diluted over such a large cast, so there are support conversations that should be there and just aren’t.
1
u/NotThePersona 1h ago
Yeah, is kinda insane how pointless it feels recruiting a bunch of the people.
1
u/defunctscrunko 2h ago
Fire emblem fan loves some story irrelevant scrimbo characters that randomly got lucky level up and carry the team.
1
u/NotThePersona 1h ago
I picked pretty early so don't really have any story irrelevant ones.
But Mu is 100% carrying Leda's team. She is my new Hilda from 3 houses who I can just park somewhere and they will kill anyone who looks at them funny.
Seems to be dodge and regular tank rolled into one.
2
u/TheShepard15 4h ago edited 4h ago
Yeah I can't agree on the supports not playing into tropes in FW. There's plenty of that still, and I don't think there's enough quality to outweigh the loss of quantity most characters suffer.
2
u/Morecowbell09 4h ago
Yea but Engage lacked a good story which is one of the most important parts of a great fire emblem game. Fortunes Weaves story is great so I ignore some of the dumb gameplay mechanics just to experience it
1
u/Divinum_Fulmen 1h ago
If that's true. I've lost interest in this one. I stopped playing Engage, because the social feature was dragging everything down. Massive story beat, you are DEAD! But now let's drink tea, collect poo and fish, play with animals. Massive story beat the world will explode, but now go collect more poo, fish, eat dinner and play with animals. Over and over again. I was collecting more poo than playing Fire Emblem. Not to mention how it fits into the story about as well as a 30 minute ad break.
28
u/Logondo 8h ago
I’m 60hrs in and I’ve only done CH1 for two of the characters.
I’m enjoying it. My main issue is the down-time between missions feels slow and kinda drags on too long.
8
u/NotThePersona 5h ago
Im 60ish hours in as well but have not finished my second part 1 yet.
I think I am going to stop at 2 then move on. A different run can be done with the other 2 at another time.
1
u/maskedman1231 5h ago
You can jump into part 2 with either of the part 1 characters you finished to take a break from the part 1s. It doesn't all come together and merge until part 3 (all the part 2s are pretty much the same though)
1
u/NotThePersona 1h ago
I will finish Theodoras part 1 then pick which part 2 to go with first.
I can already feel my attention slipping, so not sure if I will even do multiple part 2s unless they are short.
I mean at this point I have over 70 hours in the game which means I am definitely getting my money's worth.
9
u/cwatz 6h ago
The game is most similar to 3h, though I wouldn't say its story and characters are wound quite as tightly or to quite as high of a standard. (That isn't meant to be critical, just that the same high bar isn't quite met).
There is additional out of combat activities relatively speaking, though you aren't required to engage with all of it. Min/maxing the game will steal your soul, but there is a wide spectrum to play upon. Not to mention difficulties which can curate the experience further (for example... play on normal instead of hard and then do way less extra stuff to compensate or somesuch). You can take as much or as little of it as you want.
Also its not all necessarily "out of combat". A lot of the extra activities can be combat itself, albeit in pretty generic and small scale setups. Its not that the extra stuff is all bad or something. Its just that there can be a lot of it, especially over the multiple routes. Not to mention you are frozen wondering what to do to be efficient and so on. That makes it engaging but also time consuming, but also fatiguing over all the content. No different than say the monastery in 3h on your first path, compared to your third.
Im well over 100 hours at this point. So yes, its good. The added stuff isn't all bad, its can be interesting ways to engage in the world different with the various routes. Some of it is pure filler trash, but that can be ignored.
77
u/nervendings_ 9h ago
I would say the two negatives I have are that the combat is pretty easy, even on hard difficulty. So a lot of the non-story related battles tend to feel mindless. And yeah the other negative is that there is a focus on social activities that can be great when its characters I like but a bore when its characters I do not like
111
u/Cosmo_the_Cosmic_Cat PC 9h ago
Part 2 is a big difficulty jump over the part 1 routes
22
u/nervendings_ 8h ago
Okay that’s great to know I’ll just keep at it
18
u/Jediverrilli 6h ago
I finally started part 2 and I thought my characters were pretty good. It kicks your ass instantly. All the enemies have Silver Weapons and they hit like a truck.
4
u/nervendings_ 5h ago
Sorta on topic but who is your fav main character so far?
2
u/Jediverrilli 4h ago
Fabio is by far the funniest character. The Dietrich plot is low key a comedy. I liked Theodora the most out of the 4 main characters though.
1
u/nervendings_ 3h ago
Dietrich is a comedy! Hilarious how many characters comment on his beauty. And Fabio is great. I haven’t gotten too far with Theodora yet but like what I’ve seen so far
1
u/Jediverrilli 1h ago
It’s the thing I’ve noticed the most. Even the gods are like “oh man you are gorgeous”
19
u/mephnick 8h ago
My major negative is that most characters recruited after reknown level 6ish are too far behind and basically useless..which basically invalidates half the cast on any given playthrough and roughly 1/3 of the cast in all playthroughs.
I love the game but you can really see they wanted to have all 8 paths and didn't rebalance the game when they had to ditch half of them
10
u/lady_synsthra 8h ago
Damn, do the recruitable characters not level up or adjust at all when you get them?
21
u/LiefKatano 8h ago
They do level up, it’s just in a weird way that has them typically (but not always…) end up a bit worse than if you recruited them earlier (which you can compare using routes where you do so).
6
8
u/mephnick 8h ago edited 8h ago
They do, but horrendously. Leveling growth is so much better.
If you recruit someone at level 25 they might have the strength of a level 8 character...which you can't fix because they are already level 25. It would actually be much better if you could recruit them at level 1.
It's so stupid I have to consider it's a bug. But I haven't heard anything about fixing it.
4
u/Embyr1 8h ago
I've had Renown 7/8 units do well. Loretta on Cai's route especially quickly became my 3rd best unit for her ability to fly, have good speed and ability to use a Levin Sword well.
6
u/mephnick 8h ago
Levin sword is basically a cheat code for any trash unit though
1
u/fallenKlNG 8h ago
does levin sword scale by a unit's magic stat though? That's something I don't quite get so I'm not sure who exactly I should give it to
3
u/mephnick 8h ago
I think it's supposed to but it seems good no matter who uses it lol
7
u/LostRequiem1 8h ago
It feels that way because most enemies have “poor” RES and mage-type enemies are somewhat infrequent.
4
u/mephnick 8h ago
Ah yeah that's probably it
And there's so much heavy armour in the game that it's useful to have regardless
2
u/BarbarousJudge 7h ago
Levin Sword users often have the benefit of having better defense or avoid too. Even Speed most of the time so there much safer to use then some outright mages. My Alexandra with Levin Sword outclassed the damage of every mage I had in my 2 runs except Bonaventure and Tialla
1
u/Arachnofiend 3h ago
I turned Dante into a Levin Sword Wing Rider because she is kinda just flatly inferior to the other mages and I figured if she had sword prof I could make her my dancer in part 3. Imagine my surprise when she turns into a pretty respectable unit just off the sheer power of that weapon
1
2
u/BrandonLart 7h ago
I did not find the combat too easy, although the non-story battles did become mindless by the end.
2
u/EccentricFan 6h ago
Yeah, one of my big complaints about basically the entire Fire Emblem series is difficulty problems that results from supporting permanent death. Because it's designed around fights being winnable without ever losing a single unit, the combat as a whole never feels dangerous. It's always a matter of whether you lose someone and instantly restart the battle or completely crush it. On casual, even that challenge is gone.
I'd love a difficulty option fully designed around playing casual but where winning at all was tough. Where you're going to lose units left and right no matter what you do, and it become a war of attrition and trying to manage your shrinking pool of troops to complete your goals for the mission.
My even bigger complaint about the series is also around permanent death. Since there's a large cast of a characters, who may or may not die at any given point in the story, their death and life will both always feel shallow. It's hard to get them to affect the story in any meaningful way because it branches out exponentially and becomes impossible to give each combination of events the writing it would need to feel well-written.
11
u/Ha_eflolli Android 6h ago
Because it's designed around fights being winnable without ever losing a single unit, the combat as a whole never feels dangerous.
Except it's exactly the other way around, the Games are designed around the assumption that you DON'T reset when you lose a Character. That's like, half the reason you still keep getting new Recruits even super late into the Playthrough; so that they can fill up any potential gaps you have from anyone getting killed off prior.
It's hard to get them to affect the story in any meaningful way because it branches out exponentially and becomes impossible to give each combination of events the writing it would need to feel well-written.
This one I'm purely adding to what you said, but it feels especially weird considering the Games already figured that shit out too, so it's not like those two states are mutually exclusive - Whenever a Non-Protagonist Character is too important to the narrative to outright remove when killed, they just say they got too injured to keep fighting going forward, so that they can still appear in Cutscenes while also getting removed from your Roster.
Although I will say, Path of Radiance actually DID do this, there's several Chapters in the Game where some Dialogue does actually differ depending on if specific Characters are still alive or not.

Yeah, I think the amount of characters and ways they are recruited is perfect in something like sacred stones. You can get a bunch post game to play around with, but you can miss getting pupils potentially or recruiting certain characters so a death is still really important. I had 9 billion characters in Engage and just couldn't care about any of them really. And also bc Eirika and Ephraims paths mean you end up with different characters/team you focus on
1
u/SwizzGod 9h ago
Funny I don’t play but a friend of mine said it’s less focus on the social stuff that’s what he likes about it
11
u/bassboyjulio182 9h ago
It’s less than the previous Fire Emblem but still a fair amount compared to your standard tactics game
1
u/SwizzGod 9h ago
Gotcha. Like I said I don’t play but if that’s par the course for the series, why would people complain about it. I mean that’s the game right?
7
u/vezwyx 8h ago
Three Houses was a gigantic leap in the social aspects of Fire Emblem. Building relationships between your characters is something that's had a minor role in the series for a while, but that was built out into taking up half of the game for Three Houses, and it's not something that everyone appreciated.
"Less social sim than Three Houses" is therefore bringing the game closer to traditional FE, but there's a lot of room for systems that some series veterans aren't particularly interested in. The battles in FE have been a gold standard in tactical turn-based RPGs for a long time, so it makes sense that people who are drawn to that gameplay specifically could be turned off by this newer focus on mechanics/systems that really have nothing to do with that
4
u/Tiernoch 6h ago
I've been playing FE since the first official release in English, I can deal with the increased social aspects but it is frustrating that the map designs really are not that great in stretches.
If I only had three houses to compare I would consider it a step up, but Engage had great map design which is a big frustration to see that not continued.
I also do not care for getting rid of the weapon triangle, but a lot of that is also that I'm just not a huge fan of how the TH/FW handles weapons and classes (a class upgrade getting access to a new weapon used to feel amazing).
3
u/Tiernoch 6h ago
It's less than three houses but more the ratio is still skewed way more towards the social side than any previous title.
5
u/Iggy_Slayer 9h ago
If by social stuff we're talking support and character stuff yeah there's less of it in this game, waaaay less.
But if we're talking out of combat stuff in general, meaning things like picking up items around town or doing your weekly chores (basically anything but missions)...there's an insane amount of that in this game. Like an 80/20 ratio in favor of non combat.

u/FireVanGorder 7h ago
Neither of these things is true for chapter 2 and 3, but chapter 1 is the longest by far, especially if you’re doing all 4 routes
-2
u/GrouchyMembership876 8h ago
This critique only really applies to part 1, the game ramps up difficulty after. With the social aspect I kinda agree , so I only recruit characters I enjoy and get attached to so I wont let them die
33
u/PhoenixTineldyer 9h ago
With 3H, I grew to despise the monastery
I'm on the second route now in FW and I haven't gotten tired of Dagsion yet.
I never did the other routes in 3H, I will likely see FW through all 4.
14
u/Heavy_Arm_7060 9h ago
Dagsion is definitely my favorite hub between 3H, Engage and FW. It helps the fast travel works better and it's easier than ever to find stuff. I think the only 'essential' spaces off the top of my head you need to even go inside a building for are the temples and the tavern, which load basically instantly? I stopped doing certain activities in 3H and Engage as just doing them felt like a slog.
5
u/Nimstar7 8h ago
This is kind of a tangent but in regards to seeing all four routes in 3H - if you see the “true” route (if you want to call it that) first - it makes seeing the other routes seem kind of pointless and the value in pursuing them pointless, in my opinion
6
u/BarbarousJudge 7h ago
What do you consider the true route in 3H? There is none as far as I'm concerned
2
u/Nimstar7 6h ago edited 4h ago
Spoilers ahead, click at your own risk:
The Edelgard path shows that the church is essentially manipulating everyone into doing it's bidding, with the leader, Rhea, being not even remotely close to human. They're essentially a monster manipulating the populace into believing the church exists to serve the populace, when it's the other way around
7
u/BarbarousJudge 6h ago
I mean sure... But that's fair but it's not like Edelgard is a saint either. Dimitri path deals with her and still ends up with a better church than before
3
u/Ha_eflolli Android 5h ago
Just to add what /u/Nimstar7 said, The DLC Hub (once you unlock it for the Main Game) even has some Books saying that the Church straight-up banned several scientific advancements just for the sake of staying the defacto greatest political power; giving like one or two somewhat in-universe understandable reasons, but then another that's extremly blatantly "the Church is obviously just trying to get rid of anything that could threaten the current System". To give a quick list of all the specific examples mentioned:
The Telescope: Banned for potential misuse in War Situations...and because "it would lessen the Mystery of the Goddess" once people think of using it to look at the Sky
Oil: Banned for being a potential Fire-Hazard, wanting to avoid People going to War over it...and because it could give People who can't use Magic a potential advantage over those who can
Book-Printing: Banned for being too easy to use for spreading misinformation, because so many People can't read in the first place...and because it would give OTHER Religions an easier way of spreading their teachings.
And lastely Autopsies as a medical procedure: Banned because it's seen as desecrating the dead...and because it's entirely non-magical, and thus might get People to start trusting actual sciences more than the Church and its (Faith-based) Healing Magics. This one is especially blatant because the ingame Text straight-up says it's acknowledged how useful Autopsies are from a medical standpoint
1
u/Nimstar7 6h ago
I don't see how allowing Rhea and her race of monsters to control the populace through the church could ever be considered a "true" ending. But maybe that's me. Personally I feel this is pretty standard for JRPGs - the church being evil is always the real path.
8
u/BarbarousJudge 6h ago
Rhea steps down at the end of Dimitris and Claudes route and Byleth then reforms the ways the church operates. Every route shows that Rhea did messed up shit and ends with a change for the better. Hell, the initial plan for the game was only the black eagles route with Byleth not siding with Edelgard (what is still in the game as church route). And even there after Edelgard dies, Rhea goes berserk and either dies or is healed after defeat depending on support level with Byleth. And in both cases she is done with the church afterwards
2
u/PhoenixTineldyer 6h ago
I'm sure - I don't know if I did the "true" route, I did Claude's
3
u/PrinceOctavius 5h ago
There is no "true route" and Claude's actually addresses a lot of issues that the route they are talking about ignores. Golden Wind is prolly my favorite.
-6
u/Iggy_Slayer 9h ago
I don't know how you can get bored of the monastery and not dagsion which is just the same thing every month but the traversal space you have to run around in is like 5x the size. It takes so much time each month scrounging for items and talking to every character to get their unique dialogue.
11
u/Embyr1 9h ago
Simple, I don't scrounge for every item/dialogue.
Dagsion doesn't have lost items either so that is a MASSIVE W for me.
3
4
u/Iggy_Slayer 7h ago
Well by your logic the monastery wouldn't be an issue either because you'd be skipping most of it like you're doing in dagsion.
So that doesn't change anything I said. If you are doing the weekly/monthly stuff in FW the amount of bloat is unbelievably larger than 3 houses.
3
u/PhoenixTineldyer 8h ago
Dagsion allows you to teleport pretty quickly with very little load times to any spot you want.
It feels like based on your comment that you weren't aware you can fast travel to any person or place in Dagsion.

The games has an Autoskip feature that trains your units so that they catch up in levels. if you hate the social fetures that let you train and build your units and you want to play just for the story you can definitely do that. The game has anime tropes tho but it didn't annoy me, I am a person who can laugh at tropey jokes rather than be a joyless critic. This game plays like 3 Houses with the dungeoneering from Shadows of Valentia. The story is really good and if you like 3 Houses then this game has alot of character and lore tie ins that make me excited for the future of the Sothisverse.
7
u/Heavy_Arm_7060 9h ago
The new game ties into the 3H universe and does a lot of familiar 3H things. The easiest way to explain it is the calendar system to the next big battle is way more freeform, with you having X number of turns until the next major story battle.
Until the story battle you can explore the world map, which includes skirmishes and clashes (sort of quickfire turn-based fights), plus the usual 'build up relationship with existing members and potentially recruit more' while also doing sidequests. The nature of the sidequests do vary a bit depending on which part you're doing. The world map also has RNG resource spots you can search, towns you can visit, etc.
You can also ignore all that and just burn turns in town doing auto-growth activities, the main three being 'training' (raises your class and skill xp), 'combat' (raises your character and class xp), or 'search' (gain resources and gold).
Possibly the game's biggest sin is it's quite dense so it can be very intimidating. You are 100% not expected to do everything on your first path, and there's really only a handful of things you SHOULD do in a specific path.
What's really nice though is if you want to skip basically everything you absolutely can. After the prologue, you can effectively start act 3 while skipping act 1 and 2. The first path you play in act 1 will probably be the longest single individual chunk of your playtime.
I generally quite like it overall but I also 100% can see how some people might bounce off of it. The clashes and dungeon exploration in particular seem to be getting a bit more of a mixed reception. Generally loving the complex plot, while there's absolutely a few parts that can feel awkward since you're getting slices of a story you're not currently focused on, I also kind of like that?
2
u/NotThePersona 5h ago
I didnt like the dungeons and clashes at the start, but they are by far the best way to level newly aquired characters quickly with the whole link attacks thing.

u/Jon_00 5h ago
As someone who loved 3H and didn't love Engage - I was very ready to love FW.
However, FW really drags on, I rolled credits at 145 hours which is enough to do all 4 routes of 3H.
My main issue with FW is that it feels both like a regular FE game (Awakening/Engage etc.) and an expanded version of 3H, but is so disconnected from both it feels weird.
Engage has a terrible story. 3H has a great story. Engage is very concise, paralogue, mission etc. and 3H has the monastery stuff as filler.
FW also has a pretty terrible story (it's just generic Fire Emblem story really: big bad does evil, go kill evil) and also a lot more filler on the 3H side of things.
6
u/strangebloke1 4h ago
30 hours in, I've completed 2/4 of the routes.
I'm really enjoying it. Very fun game.
Overarching story is pretty mediocre, there's a scheme going on but the pacing is very very slow and the schemers are idiots who only succeed because they're opposed by an even bigger idiot.
However, the main flame lords have really good plotlines and I'm really invested in each of them and their core of 3-4 retainers. The "sublords" who lead competing teams in the games and can be recruited later are also super cool.
Some people are really bummed at how hard recruitment is, the truth is each route has a set of like 6 characters that are easier to recruit, and its pretty easy to get exactly those units on each route, and if you do you get most of everyone. There's a few units that are harder to get but I don't think "there's so much content you can miss some of it" is actually that serious a critique, personally.
As to the 'too much out of combat' and related to the prior item.... I see the critique, but also....
people really try to optimize the fun out of things on a blind playthrough of a very long game, and this doesn't lead to a good time. It's silly. The game is challenging on hard but its not THAT challenging. Just recruit whoever you like and do weekly activities when you feel like it. If its a chore, don't do it!! All the out of combat stuff has heavily diminishing returns.
Note that once you've done one route, all the supports and quest completions carry over, so if you torture yourself getting absolutely everything on the first route you'll have way less to do out of combat on later routes.
3
u/KingBubblie 3h ago
Also just playing it like crazy.. nothing wrong if you want to spend that much time gaming, you do you, but people are complaining about it dragging or being grindy, but also have 140+ hours in it. It's been out a couple weeks, thats like averaging 8+ hours a day.. what game doesn't drag at that point?
The game is beatable on hard by skipping all Act 1s. You don't need to optimize and grind anything, though I do understand the urge to try.

nobody's answered your actual engage complaint - the tone is way closer to 3h than engage. it's political drama people with grudges, not twelve characters who each have one quirk they yell about. the social stuff is there but it's writing you'd actually sit through

Im enjoying the game a lot. But part 1 feels incomplete. And I've played every character's part 1. Maybe the blanks will get filled in, in the DLC, as there are 4 missing character stories that were planned to ship with the game originally. And you can feel it. Again this is my observation after finishing only part 1.
I will be moving on to part 2, after I replay Cai's route again with all the books unlocked.

u/Johnnoshark 3h ago
I’ve played everything Fire emblem since the DS games (including all the DS games) and I rate this one pretty highly.
Probably not my favourite, but still a great addition to the line up.
Edit: should add I have finished Cai’s part 1, and have 2 chapters to go in Leda’s part 1. Stories are independent, strong, but I can also see how they are starting to merge into one.
2
u/Blade_Killer479 1h ago
It’s incredible. 10/10 for me and I hated Engage.
The out of combat stuff is pretty dense though. You could spend hours just running around, but also I play games like a freak so your mileage may vary. A lot of the running is trying to get more people on your team but you can totally avoid that and you’ll be fine. If you’ve done the gift run in 3H, it’s that. Otherwise you go out of base to get supplies, fight battles, and delve into dungeons and the game recommends you head back to base every so often to train up and invite others for meals.
Personally, I feel FW’s side stuff is just a bit more than 3H, but the game runs way smoother so it feels about the same.

Can you actually explain what anime tropes and characters Engage had that weren’t present in 3H? Or did you actually mean “It looked anime, and it made it harder to pretend this series wasn’t always anime”?

If you like FE - check out any of the Disgaeas, it's also got a lot of Anime-ish nonsense but you can ignore it for the most part, and most of it is very tongue-in-cheek not taking itself very seriously. But the turn based combat is deep as hell.

I've been loving it. Started with Cai's route and ended up adoring the kids far more than I thought I would. So far I would call it significantly better than three houses in all but a few aspects. Free time especially is done significantly better here than in three houses.
I only have a few negatives, and one of them isn't even the games fault.
1: It's too easy. Been playing on hard/classic and the only thing I would call hard so far is the final story map of Cai's route. Hoping the second half of the game changes that.
2: The story simply won't have as big of a cultural impact as Three Houses did. I unironically liked the three houses discourse and unfortunately fortune's weave doesn't have a story that will replicate that.
Still, amazing game that I would 100% recommend if you liked three houses. (And maybe even if you didn't depending on what you disliked)

u/Jediverrilli 6h ago
For your first point the game does get significantly harder in part 2. It’s not maddening levels of hard but I feel like it’s the hardest hard mode in a Fire Emblem game then I could think of and it’s not close.
I’m one of the few that didn’t care for Three Houses story and this one is gripping me more. You are right though that it won’t be as big of an impact but I think it’s still solid.

The only difficult maps I've done in Theodora's route was one in a poison fog map because I accidentally split the squad and I had to work how to keep Bonaventure alive, and a random skirmish that was filled with chariots that would skin me alive if I didn't plan things out properly. Rest of the game has been piss easy.

u/Heavy_Arm_7060 9h ago
I'd add that 3H did a better job balancing the characters, every recruit felt significant. FW there's definitely 3 tiers: protagonists, characters and mercenaries, with mercs having the worst support convos and such. That's something I hope they fix with free updates and not paid DLC.

u/Bierdosendeckel 6h ago
The micromanagement really sucks ... In games like Xcom it can a be fun as well, but here... yikes...
The sci fi injected into this game is terrible, absolutely terrible, I hate it...
But Siegfried's and Fabio's dynamic was so fun, it brought a tear to my eye... 🥲
1
u/Iggy_Slayer 9h ago
It's good but I have pretty big issues with it compared to 3 houses. The first major one is the recruitment system, it makes most of the characters in the game pointless outside of filling a slot for combat. You know how 3 houses had like 8+ people per house that were tied to the story? You get like 4-5 at most per route, every other character that you can recruit has extremely few support convos and have no place in the story. They're like 1 step away from the faceless xcom grunts you hire in that game.
My issues is that I heard the new one is heavily skewed towards the out of combat activities, particularly the social features. Is this true?
Yes and this is the other main issue...just how much bloat is added to the week to week routine in the game. 3 houses had what I would say is just the right amount of it, maybe some could have been trimmed a bit but it didn't feel out of control like it does in this game. I finished part 1 for one of the 4 characters in 53 hours (there's 3 parts). By comparison a full run of 3 houses took me like 30ish hours. They just added too much pointless shit to do that is not fun to do like the awful jrpg dungeons and grinding materials on the overworld map.
The story stuff is good but with the reduction of characters involved in the story and how much time is wasted slogging through the out of combat activities it really weighs it down compared to 3 houses. The lack of supports really hurts too, every character in 3 houses had a full slate of conversations, even the seiros people. Most characters in FW have 2-3 supports outside of your core cast.
3
u/Nebuli2 7h ago
The issues with recruitability stem from a deeper issue, IMO. Specifically, a lot of the units that you recruit so late that they end up useless were core members of the 4 cut routes.
2
u/Iggy_Slayer 7h ago
That too, so you can argue they're not even good for the one thing they do in the game (battle). They arrive with like 30-40 less stats than your core units and don't have enough time to level up and gain more for you.
2
u/Gingingin100 8h ago
The reduction of story relevant characters is by far the best change in this game. 3 Houses was near totally incapable of actually managing 9 person+ casts and every route was just "3 plot relevant guys + Byleth + 5 students that lowk don't matter and have no real impact on the plot"
3
u/unpeturbedcorvid 6h ago
3H had characters that would leave your house temporarily because they and their war alignments were so important to the plot. Many of their supports were timegated because they had plot relevance. Every chapter, every in house student had at least something to say. Not always substantial. But it was something. And everyone had their 2 cents on plot events when you clicked explore. 3H supporting cast has more plot relevance than the vast majority of FE games and I'm really not sure how you can argue otherwise.
Engage is the one who decided "yep, you guys had your moment, now we'll pretend you don't exist as we move on to the next region"
1
u/Gingingin100 6h ago
I think you can pretty easily argue that 3 houses routes focus on 3-4 guys (Lord+Retainer+close friend1/close friend 1+2) to the detriment of everyone else. You're making it seem like I'm making an argument I never really said, I just think 3 houses' handling of auxiliary house members is extremely poor, especially when it comes to early supports and integrating them into the story beyond their designated 1 character trait they have when the writers don't feel like doing anything with them.
There's only so many times you can sit and listen to characters like Ignatz Ashe Felix {the entire non Hubert Edelgard Ferdinand eagles house} spout the same character trait in the exact same way at every plot point before it becomes too miserable to bear.
I like the majority of characters in the game but for core story content there's just too many of them at most times.
3
u/unpeturbedcorvid 6h ago
You've originally framed this as if to say "the reduction is an improvement on 3H" which doesn't align with the argument you're actually making. "3H didnt have enough story relevant characters so the fact FW has even less means it did this better than 3H" is basically what you are saying.
Also given what you said about supports it feels like you're either projecting FW supports onto 3H here, or you just... didn't unlock that many 3H supports?
2
u/Gingingin100 6h ago
You edited on a part afterwards, dawg I did not say that please read properly😭. Three Houses has too MANY characters it treats as plot relevant when only 4-5 of them truly are and the others suffer because of it.
-1
u/unpeturbedcorvid 6h ago
I am reading properly. The fact you can't see the internal contradiction of what you've written does not mean it's not there.
3
u/Gingingin100 6h ago
The extent to which you're just making up an argument and deciding that's what I said is truly impressive
The reduction is an improvement because it keeps the story, support and character writing tighter rather than having stragglers.
That is my argument. Not whatever you made up in your head.
I hope you have a good day🫡
1
u/unpeturbedcorvid 6h ago
But your argument hinges on the idea that only 3 or 4 characters are relevant in 3H. You're arguing that it has both too many, and too little plot relevant characters compared to FW at the same time. Both cannot be true. And the one sentence chime ins that in house characters make in whatever given chapters ore battle cutscenes (the "im here" quotes you keep alluding to) are not coming at a detriment to the plot, and they're not all those characters have to say about the plot. That said, if they are, how are you going to sit there and argue Hubert and Edelgard, which you said again BE basically only focuses on them two and Ferdinand, have less plot relevance than a FW equivalent. She's the literal plot catalyst in every single route.
Kinda feels to me like you just didnt pick up much explore dialogue or view many 3H supports.
And I'd be hesitant to call FW's supports across the board "tighter" or better than 3H's.
0
u/Gingingin100 6h ago
How? Keeping the core cast of each route tighter and smaller leads to a significant increase in writing quality when the writers don't have to "ooh I'm here too btw" 5 characters on every route and lazily write C supports to redo the same gimmick over and over because someone might not have seen their introduction.
3
u/unpeturbedcorvid 6h ago
"Increasd in writing quality" is debateable, and that doesn't even make sense. You're arguing on one hand that 3H houses had 3-4 plot relevant characters between lords, retainers, and Byleth. Then you turn around and argue that 3-4 characters in FW with less plot relevant dialogue and less overall supports is somehow giving room for a massive improvement in writing quality?
Do you think 3H has too many plot relevant characters or only 3-4, which is it? Because right now you're arguing both to support the same argument.
1
u/Gingingin100 6h ago
Where did you get the idea that I'm saying fortune's weave core cast members have less plot relevant dialogue? They have more in my experience of playing 2 routes so far.
I'm saying focusing the main party on 4-5 guys gives more space to develop them and keep them interesting at all times. As opposed to 3 Houses where having 9 core party members of whom 1 is Byleth and at most 4(it's really only four for the lions) are treated as core party members spreads the writing thin and created alot of "I too am here please note that👋👋👋" esque dialogue throughout the rest of the cast.
I really like 3 houses but it's writing in both plot and supports just couldn't handle 9 people who it really really wants you to believe are equally important when they truly were not. Engage had similar issues since you brought it up of god awful C supports with a dramatic increase in quality in B supports where they could actually explore the characters meaningfully.
1
u/Arachnofiend 4h ago
Tbh having a smaller roster of story-central characters allows them to develop a strong dynamic as a group rather than every cutscene being eight dudes chirping in with whatever their primary gimmick is
1
1
u/GiantFoamHand 9h ago
As far as recruiting people I’m just stealing the voiced characters from the other routes so that I’m pretty much always playing with the same cast regardless of who my path main character is, lol. I agree that all the other ones are pretty forgettable.
2
u/NotThePersona 5h ago
The key thing seems to be the factions
The 4 main ones you can play as and Bertrand, Anatolia, Talimun, OrchelMost supports are within each faction. So I basically find which other sub faction my core team has the most supports with and steal all of them, and then a couple of randoms from one of the main factions.
Then there is just a whole ton of characters who just feel pointless, they have maybe 1-3 low level support conversations. I believe most of these should have been cut to focus more on the others.
1
u/Entonations 7h ago
How is the story compared to 3 houses? I’ve heard it’s not great writing, but I really liked the story in 3H personally
6
u/Heavy_Arm_7060 7h ago
I'd call it generally 3H but better. The cutscenes play out a bit better, characters are more aware of the situation around them, there's a complex but fairly logical world on display. Probably the most unusual thing is some stuff you might expect to get revealed later gets revealed early, frontloading some stories, but some other stuff introduced super early is just sorta 'there' for potentially quite a while before you get proper insight into what's up.
Basically, the plot's super dense (mostly for the better as I'm enjoying it), and you constantly encounter tidbits from other arcs while focusing on one. You slowly peel back the greater story, and who you pick as the first story to follow can potentially get you some answers way faster than others. There's a character in Leda's path I was left going, "What's the deal?" pretty early on only to learn rather quickly what said deal was in another path.
1
u/VanGrayson 6h ago
I don't think it's that bad. It seems overwhelming playing through your first route.
But alot of the busy work social sim stuff is actually fairly unnecessary.
Especially if you reset the chapter to farm support from meals.
I think once people settle in with the game a bit more people will realize that it actually requires far less time sink than the monastery in 3H.
1
u/sfzen 6h ago
Yeah, there's a lot more non-battle stuff that essentially boils down to managing your schedule with daily events and side quests. The combat is still fun, though fairly easy.
Personally, I like the extra attention to non-combat features. I don't love the cast of characters as much as I liked 3H, but it's a similar sort of feel.
1
u/samples98 5h ago
Do I need to play the other ones to play this one?
1
u/Ha_eflolli Android 4h ago
There are a handful of FE Games that are directly connected to each other, but the majority of them are standalone; with this one you can just jump right in. The most Fortune's Weave has is that it's set in the same World as Three Houses, but as far as I'm aware, that only matters for World Building, not the actual Story.
1
u/StormCTRH 2h ago
Honestly, most, if not all FE games have some connection other games in the series, and the experience may be cooler having played those previous entries, but generally you won't ever really have to play a previous game to get a complete and understandable story.

u/defunctscrunko 2h ago edited 2h ago
crack for sicko who loves micromanagement. (Yes it's great) also like how each lord story going in and out of each other. the whole cast is extremely likable for the most past.
the game does not have more social features than 3 houses tho. Some would say it has less on support side. Just more variety in side activities.
1
u/DivineBladeOfSilver 2h ago
Not that good. The core Fire Emblem is AMAZING. The story is amazing. The JRPG gameplay is hell. Like you are spending the vast majority of your time just repeating the same couple chores or doing pointless side quests. And people will tell you oh just skip it. But if you do you are very weak/unprepared + miss out on A TON. If you love that sorta thing it could be for you, but the game does not respect the player's time AT ALL
1
u/Drude247 1h ago
I am midway through my first route and so far I am enjoying it much more than Three Houses. Engage is a bit harder to say, so far I still prefer Engages gameplay and maps but Fortunes Weave has a better story and characters.
I really hope that in a free update or DLC they implement a custom map creator, I really enjoyed that in Engage even with its major limitations and with all of the systems I believe you could create some really fun maps if the system was expanded on. Sadly I doubt it will happen since I don't believe it was very popular but I can hope.

u/Boned80 1h ago
I think it is one of, if not THE most ambitious strategy/tactics RPG I have ever played. As a relative outsider who had only played 3 other FE games before this, it is a treat of a game. What I will say it is that it is also one of those minmaxer trap games, in that if you're an obsessive with your games then this one will snare you good and you might well come to hate it. This is because it's a game that offers an immense amount of avenues for you to optimize and screw up both, and is a hwll of a timesink on top of all that.

The recruitment aspect is complete dog shit, the characters are well written but supports are few and far between one guy has ONE support. Story is fine but doesn't have the same impact that three houses did. The avatar is a fucking bird for all of act 1 and 2 gameplay speaking. Busy work is 90% of the game. Combat feels enjoyable but after one route it drags out. the lore was expanded upon which is nice. Do you like the alien aspect in some fire emblems? then you better hope you do because they're the background cause of why things are happening in this game.
Game is a 7 of 10 if I'm being very generous.
Edit: the downvotes don't scare me from objectively stating this is a average quality fire emblem game. As a veteran of the series since before awakening i'm not going to let reddit karma keep me from stating my opinion. The lows are REALLY bad, and the highs while there are objectively not enough to overcome it's short comings. You randomly have plot twists that come in Leda's route with no preamble like with Orchel, and her face.
2
u/unpeturbedcorvid 6h ago
I'm firmly of the belief that this will be a more popular opinion in a few months time. Right now anything that's not "10/10 this game cured my diabetes, got me a partner, and saved my nans life" gets downvoted in threads like these, but in actual discussion threads would be considered a relatively balanced take.
2
u/VanceXentan D20 6h ago
I go out of my way to at least make sure my own experience with a game speaks on my judgement of it, and not just what everyone says. The game is fun, but 70 dollars worth of fun, with four cut lords that will probably be DLC, and the recruitment and busy work just to recruit people you couldn't give four fucks about because you don't know anything about them due to lack of supports/story relevance hurts.
At least in games like Awakening you got a proper intro to guys like Lon'qu and he has proper supports to further endear him to the players despite being in the story for only one chapter and being vaguely relevant in it.

u/Iggy_Slayer 8h ago
Agreed with everything. They really dropped the ball on the character aspect by making like 70% of the units in the game borderline random grunts you hire in other strategy games.

People are going to downvote me because they're mega fans but they're full of shit. People can enjoy the games as they will. I personally play on hard/casual myself but have been playing since the Sacred Stones. This game just isn't up to par. I don't know ANYONE but the main cast after doing Leda's, and Dietrich's routes unless they have some sort of plot relevance because the game doesn't explain who they are except for quick blurbs that are optional if you talk to them. I already listed out my grievances so i won't do so again but just to show i'm not fully biased against the game:
The writing is great for the characters, the characters are fun and enjoyable to see them do their things. Graphics are an improvement over three houses. Combat can be fun but it gets replayed to often, and sometimes the maps are bullshit. Especially on the first route. This game has SOOO many flaws fanboys are going to overlook just because it's Fire Emblem.
Fun fact: On both the routes i played? The mandatory mercenary recruit has ZERO supports with their main cast like what the fuck are Catannia, and Yang Jie doing?
1
u/distinctvagueness 7h ago
Leda and Dietrich are more disconnected from the "big plot" than the other 2. But yeah cast is strangely centralized on 3-5 characters per route
2
u/VanceXentan D20 7h ago
That in itself should be a rather large flaw in itself. That two of the four routes exclude the 'big plot' in itself. Anyone who thought 'I want to start with a lord dancer' shouldn't get punished for wanting said lord, or wanted something more familiar and went with Dietrich.

1
u/EkkyEkkyGames 8h ago
A rough 'minutes between battles' comparison would be so helpful here! Good characters are a bonus, but wanting to get back to the map is totally fair.
1
u/Heavy_Arm_7060 8h ago
Depending on the run and how much you want to do certain stuff, you're looking at maybe half an hour (including cutscenes and basic prep) to easily two hours between main story battles, but that two hours includes skirmishes, shopping, training, etc. There's more people than ever to give weekly gifts and such to, but less actual support conversations, and the odds of you successfully charming everyone you can in a single run is very, very low.
2
u/Ph33rDensetsu 8h ago
and the odds of you successfully charming everyone you can in a single run is very, very low.
Well... About that...
Support levels are preserved between all saves and routes so all you have to do to recruit everyone in a single run is do your weekly activities that raise supports at the beginning of a chapter and then restart the chapter. You gain back any gold and items spent and keep any support level you gained.
I used spoiler tags just in case you don't actually want to know this trick that might be considered an exploit by some.

So everything resets except social link progress? I got the impression EVERYTHING reset.

u/planeforger 8h ago
It's fantastic so far. Better than 3H in most ways.
I'm really enjoying the story (after Leda's path and most of Cai's path). I like how you only see small parts of the story in each path, and the characterisations of key characters feel quite different depending on which path you choose. It makes replaying Part 1 a lot more interesting.
The combat system is good, although as other have said, Part 1 is too easy. The social links are also quite lacking, probably because the cast is massive and the links need to be stretched across such a long story.
But yeah, very small negatives overall. It's a great game.

1
u/GoodOmens182 6h ago
It didn't grab me like I was hoping it would. Once you get out of the prologue (which by itself is 7-8 hours long), you can go sometimes 2-3 hours or more of fluff between story missions. One of the early missions on one of the routes (Leda chapter 3) is basically completely weighted against the player unless you manage to play the exact moves the devs intended in the exact order they planned. I'm on story mission 5 of the first route after 15 hours of gameplay and pretty sure I'm going to DNF it pretty soon.
1
u/blackpantherismydad 5h ago
My issue is there is far too much filler between battles. I just want to play RPG chess like the originals but the series has progressed to an anime life sim that I simply do not have the time for. Totally respect if that’s what you’re into, but there’s numerous other series like that and no real replacement for Fire Emblem :(
1
u/OlivineIV 5h ago
Fortune's Weave has its flaws, yes. But if you're the type of fan who preferred Three Houses over Engage, then you're going to like this one.
It's true there's a heavier emphasis on social features, but you'll learn how to streamline it. FW has a lot of tools to help you get back to the good part if that's all you're looking for.
For example, my first route took me 60 hours to complete, but it looks like I'm going to close in on 40 for my second. I suspect I'll be able to do the next two in 30 now that I'm settled.

u/King_Artis PlayStation 4h ago edited 4h ago
So I finished up to the end of part two with one route and decided to do another route bwfore doing part 3. About 60-70ish hours in.
Genuinely the only two things I dislike are the recruitment system and just having less supports overall.
Problem I have with how you recruit is that it varies based on the route you're on. One character can get a rather big team pretty early on while another basically isn't getting anyone until mid-late game of their 1st act. Ends up creating some disparity in even just the same characters per route since one will ultimately have more time to receive more growth. Think they could've just evened this out a little more but it's not exactly make or break for me. Believe a lot of this comes from the fact there were supposed to be about 8 routes in total but they cut it to 4 while keeping all the characters in.
Then there's just less support scenes between each character, don't enjoy it as there's a lot of characters I just like but I can live with it because there's A LOT of characters in this game in comparison to both 3H and Engage.
I know some people don't like how there's down time between each main story mission but you can literally skip all the downtime and have character levels adjusted if you really want (which I do a mix of doing some inebtween stuff and skipping the rest and have been doing since my first run). Sure you can miss out on optional stuff if you do this (though there are ways so you can make it so you won't), but if you really dislike the downtime it's not like you're forced to participate in said downtime. Not denying it's a valid complaint for people to have, it's just not one that effects me this instance because it's entirely skippable and/or I find it simple to just make a schedule on when I wanna do some shit.
As a newer FH fan since 3h, I think this is the best one yet. Got rid of the issues I had with Engage (hated the story structure and just didn't care for many of the characters given you didn't have much time to really get to know them, while thinking gameplay was excellent). Gameplay is still great here and I actually think this one is pretty hard with some of the maps actually making me restart early on just cause I fumbled my planning with shit hitting the fan quickly.
I think the games great, unless E-day or Ace Combat suddenly surprises me this is going to be my GOTY this year without question. If I gave it a rating it's a 9.5/10 and I genuinely think I'm going to do every route with this one because there's been enough difference even with just the two I've done while also seeing some explanations that explain each other.

It’s the first FE out of a dozen that I started and then shelved without completing.
Somehow took the shitty parts of both Engage and 3H.

u/KurthnagaLoL 5h ago
As a fan of the series since Tellius, I am currently 100+ hours in and on Part 3, and I'd say it's probably the best Fire Emblem game ever made. A vocal minority of the hardcore FE fans are hating on the amount of downtime, but this is the most real a world has felt to me in the entire series. The characterization is rich despite a relatively low support->roster size comparison. Dietrich & Leda's stories are standouts to me, some of the best Lords we've ever gotten. I find the supplementary RPG elements enhance the world building, and if you don't want to engage with then for the most part you don't need to.
The downsides are that the game is a bit on the easy side given how powerful your units can be, you can feel that some things got rushed a bit or lost in development as well. But I find that to be part and parcel with how large and ambitious it is. I find it to be like Awakening in terms of my reception, it tries a lot of new and exciting things and has some stumbles but a lot of good and represents an exciting new era for the franchise. I loved 3 Houses but you could really feel how small Fodlan and Garreg Mach were, and it wore the patience thin on repeated routes. I have been engaged the entire time I've played Fortune's Weave, and an even already looking forward to a replay at 100 hours in.

u/SaveADay89 5h ago
The game came out like two weeks ago and you've played a 100 hours of it already? Wow.

Yeah game is good, some of the folks on FE Twitter beat it a few days ago. Real play time for me may be slightly less due to idling, but the game has been good enough that I've been on it most of when I'm not at work.

It's much better than 3H for replayability and story telling. I can never bring myself to finish all routes on 3H despite unlocking everything early. It was too much a chore in Part 1. This game allows you to skip Part 2, which is repetitive from all other routes, while also lvup your chars to bring their on pace with the chapters

u/Elogano Console 8h ago
Part 1 might be easy on novice mode but still very interesting. Part 2 gets hard. It’s very addictive and I am loving the story of Theodora so far. The social features are not annoying to me on this one. You need to work your ass to recruit some characters, but it’s quick. Also the characters are cool on this one. I recommend it to every one that is a fan of tactical rpg

as someone who is incredibly skeptical of games, i think its pretty good. You and i are different, as i still like engage the most for nostalgia purposes, but, this game probably ties with 3H for me. Theres ALOT more depth, with classes and how they get abilities and mounts have levels now, its all pretty cool to me. The only thing i really was disappointed with is that its all basically an episode of dragon ball Z, i wouldve liked a few different stories.

It's awesome, there mostly isn't any V-tuber personalitiea like in engage, there's a lot of "downtime" between chapters, which some of it can be skipped (well, you CAN skip all of it, but I seriously wouldn't suggest it, as you wont be able to recruit anyone), the weekly activities can get really repetative, especially once you're in like third path.
Oh that's another thing, unlike three houses where you could just do one path from start to finish, fortunes weave kinda expects you to do multiple of the act 1s before moving on to act 2. However unlike 3H, each path actually have unique maps, story bits and even a few mechanics.

If you liked 3H and disliked Engage, you will probably like Fortune's Weave. It improved in some things like combat and maps while it regressed in some others like accessories and all that. I would say there is a lot more management outside of the Map -> Aftermath -> Story -> Preparation -> Map loop (even more than 3H), but somehow Dagsion has not been boring for me, might be because the 4 lord routes are very different.
Difficult ramps hard on Part 2. Don't know why people are asking already for Maddening difficulty. I think you'll enjoy it.

it is the best entry in the series. GOTY.
Having said that, we're still in the honeymoon period, and I haven't even finished more than a single Path of Part 1. Also there's a lot of things missing. You can definitely tell the game was designed around 8 Lords with 8 Paths and they put out an incomplete game to sell DLC.
The writing is incredible tho.

I've seen a couple People mention the "It was so obviously designed with 8 Lords in mind" part, and as someone who wants to get the Game eventually at some point later, I'm curious, can you elaborate on that in a low/no-spoiler way?

It’s 3H 2.5. Plays nearly exactly the same except instead of doing a brand new game each playthrough you can hop between them.
The setting is very weird but not in a bad way. It’s a mix of extreme sci fi and base fantasy like usual.

Considering it's literally set in the same World AS 3H, I'm guessing that might have been on purpose? Like, I'm legit just guessing on that.

The ratio of FE battles to "other content" is definitely the most lopsided it's ever been. There's a lot more management now. Day-specific and time-specific events, along with world map distances, need to be considered. Mounts are a whole new subsystem. Recruitment's more involved, sometimes gated behind quests. A few classes need to be unlocked. And you're gonna have to be a little more thoughtful pairing up units if you wanna see all the supports. They don't come pouring in the way 3H's did.
