How is the new Fire Emblem?

I'm a big fan of the fire emblem games, but I will admit that I didn't like engage. I found the combat to be as engaging as ever, but the anime tropes and characters were really annoying. I liked 3H, though. My issues is that I heard the new one is heavily skewed towards the out of combat activities, particularly the social features. Is this true?

If it makes you feel better you would be having a much worse time if you saved Cai for later. Cai is heavily tutorialized in a way that's not skippable, the other characters will be able to benefit from his map completion but it largely does not work the other way around because children are not allowed to ride the carriages.

Oh god is that why they are locked? I thought it was going to open up after a certain point and was confused why chapter 5 it hadn’t yet.

There'll be a side quest that unlocks them, I'm not sure when precisely but I think you're coming up on it soon. And yeah it sucks, of the four routes Cai is the one that I am probably not gonna redo any time soon lol
