It turns out you cannot eat pure political rhetoric when the trade war bill comes due.

Nothing screams rugged, independent free-market capitalism quite like begging the government for a multibillion-dollar bailout because your own preferred trade policies vaporized your customer base.

You voted to burn down the global grain market and are now stunned to discover you actually have to live inside the ashes.
Broad tariff regimes inevitably trigger direct retaliatory duties on domestic agricultural exports, converting thriving family operations into federally dependent welfare cases overnight. Handing out billions in taxpayer-funded stopgap relief does not recover structural export market share; it simply forces the public to subsidize avoidable self-inflicted losses while multi-generational farms fold under the debt.

*He kind of fucked them the first term. It got bad, and he bailed them out--after allowing his shitty corporate goons to buy up a percentage of those farms (I remember he let something like 20 percent fail and be bought, but he bailed out the majority of farmers) These guys are ones who were likely bailed out before.

I just want to be clear--he is fucking them. These guys saw some of their neighbors lose everything, but they got bailed out, and they voted for him again. I find that worse in a lot of ways.

I remember one lady talking about selling her farm b/c she was losing money on it. Mentioned "selling it to JD" and didn't seem to connect those dots for even a moment.

Because despite what the big Ag corpos want you to believe, farming is not that pastoral, idyllic thing they paint in advertisements. Farming is not people bending down on one knee to gently fondle the first shoots of a crop growing.

Its highly industrialized, heavily automated, and extremely machine reliant at every single possible point to save the most money. The most they do is sit in a tractor cab, drinking soda and eating cookies and chips.

The actual physically intensive parts of farming that cannot be done with machinery is accomplished by undocumented migrants labor being underpaid.

Now as it’s happening and he’s getting impacted, he says it’s a small price to pay to keep nuclear weapons out of Irans hands.

We can’t talk politics because he refuses to think and when things happen, he moves the goal posts.

Genuine question, I'm not trying to be rude when I ask this. I've seen videos with these farmers. I've been to state fairs where they travel to show off their prized live stock. Why are all of them so unimaginably unhealthy and obese? Their kids are also excessively overweight. I don't care if someone is overweight, it's none of my business. But farming is supposed to be hard work, right? They're all red and cherub faced, though.

47

u/TheMadPoet 10h ago

Grew up and worked as an adult on our moderate-sized family farm. They're morons. That's it.

You see, farming doesn't require an education, or a 'deep sensitivity to Nature'; farmers aren't "stewards of the environment" - that's a bullshit marketing. Modern farming isn't a "healthy lifestyle"; instead, it's 14-16 hours in a tractor drinking Mountain Dew and eating cookies and chips. For efficiency, everything on the farm is very heavy and machines are required - farmers are mostly highly skilled tractor and equipment operators running half-million dollar equipment like combines, corn planters, various harvesters. Animal farms have to control, process, and dispose of tens of millions of gallons of manure every year. Maintaining and repairing all that equipment is also inevitable.

Farming requires the ability to work 14-16 hours a day, 7 days a week, in all weather - that's it. No time for PPE, no tag-out--lock-out, no breaks for a healthy farm-fresh meal, no 'pure and natural', no clean water - and constant exposure to toxic fertilizers, herbicides, aerosolized bleach and ammonia (in the milking parlor). Hell, I'd get a 36 hour headache after 5 minutes in the milking area...

Usually, as was the case on our farm, Mexican, Guatemalan workers, (I hear that some farms have Puerto Rican workers) did the hard physical work like milking cows, feeding calves, etc.

34

u/embersgrow44 8h ago

TLDR: these farmers haven’t done the actual labor for generations, the undocumented workers these clowns exploited and voted to be deported did

This is a major state of the Americans diet overall. It’s sad, and it was hard for me to break.

Soda is addictive, little Debbie’s is addictive, etc… I lost nearly 30lbs from just cutting those things out, they where blasting my daily calorie intake almost 500 above my recommended, it adds up over time, and one day you just realize you’re fat, and you blame everything but what should be obvious in front of you.

I’ve kept the weight off for nearly 8 years now, but I still think about soda all the time, and crave the savory taste of a Twinkie, but I want to live as long as I can.

A lot of it was ignorance, but it was also about comfort and convenience from working 80 hrs a week.

6

I was wondering if they are some of the last people to believe hard work and having a business is all you need for American dream and being isolated has made them slow to feel effects of American oligarch nightmare

16

u/TheMadPoet 8h ago

They are heavily subsidized - bribed. They're socialists, but 100% refuse to see that. They wouldn't be in business if not propped up by the USDA grants and all kinds of federal and state programs. That's why Dump wants to get checks to them - a bribe.

I think they just don't pay any attention to anything but working. "I do whut muh daddy done, and his daddy done before that." That goes for farming or voting conservative - it's reflexive. They are convinced Democrats are c0mm1es, f*@ *g*s, gender swappers, big tax boogeymen - whatever.

Sure you can find exceptions, but IMO this is more true than exaggerated.

Because the word "farmer" doesn't mean what you think it means. These guys aren't mom 'n' pop one man shows doing the physical labor required to cultivate crops, they're basically medieval landlords. They own the land (which they inherited) and pay other, more competent people to do the work for them while they sit on their fat fucking asses sucking up millions in government subsidies and whine about how the government doesn't give hard-working self-made people like them enough money and adulation.

Like marathon runner build. Never had a gf so maybe that’s a factor but I think  more importantly he actually goes out and does the work, drives the equipment, and walks the fields. I realize it's never good to relish in someone else's pain (schadenfreude) but this has always been difficult for me to hear their plights and not think this is exactly what they deserve.

Being incapable of seeing that Donald Trump was a fraud before the first election, deciding to still vote for him (because fuck women), seeing how poorly that turned out (covid and more), supporting a cause that he was robbed of the second election (election fraud and raiding of our capital), then turning around for the 3rd and voting still (absolutely idiocy).

It's like they saw the bloody scrawl on the wall, read it, and said, (edit: wow, this "quote" started out as like 3 sentences, but it's crazy how I can just keep going and none of it feels incorrect based on current circumstances)

"Who are these warnings for? Not for me, that's for sure! I am white and DT sounds like the best bet for my future, OUR future as Americans! He's finally going to smite all the illegal brown people in our nation! Any opposition, even my fellow white Americans and that's amazing! I can't wait to see my fellow Americans (and immigrants) be falsely imprisoned, held hostage, kidnapped, deprived of their liberties, or deported without cause.

Hell, we should have a force of mentally unstable vigilantes that arrest people without cause, murder them in the streets, and more! We should continue to support our police force that answers distress with violence, misunderstanding with murder, and more! They don't need proper education on the law, proper training for crisis, standards that uphold the constitution or bill of rights. Heck, we'd love it if they started using illegal means to monitor people they had suspicion over or wanted to follow for fun. Those pesky ex-girlfriends deserve to be stalked! Cameras should be used for mass surveillance. I love knowing that big brother has an eye on all those filthy illegals.

Brown people? DT supports that we fuck them over! I love that. I hate Muslims! I hate everything that is different than my vision of righteous Christianity in my country. Have I read the bible? No! Will I read the bible? No! Will I follow the teachings of the bible? No! The word of God is one that smites anyone who identities differently, anyone who isn't an idealized white nationalist holy figure! It's within Trump's rights to depict himself as a savior, because that IS what he is. He is our version of Jesus, living in the modern world! White people should dictate the lives of others. We are the best country in the world! Nothing is ever going to bring us down. The white folk will always come out on top and I sure hate taxpayer money going to social causes, but fuck if I won't take it under another name."

While this video shows one individual that understands its a bandaid, he fails to mention (maybe he recognizes it, but it isn't touched on in this clip) that he is still be swindled with this tariff relief bailout. It's your money you paid for tariffs, it's just a small portion you're getting back. This isn't a boon, WE were being robbed right from underneath OUR noses and now Trump is giving you a tiny bit back to placate you into voting for representatives that will continue to feed into this disarray just to make it easier to cover up decades of sexual abuse, allow him and others close to him to cash in on any financial gains he can, and disrupt the very foundation of our country. He's most likely even going to try running for office again in 2028, and who's to stop him? We keep letting him shit all over our values, laws, constitution and rights. What (or rather who) is going to stand up to him and stop him? We can barely do anything to stop anything he does already.

Edit: I realize the "quote" above is a super long paragraph, sorry about that. I honestly could keep writing because there are just so many examples of hypocrisy and lunacy within that spectrum of people.

The bar for being competent can be high sometimes. A competent business stays open (if it wants to).

Competency means adequately navigating your circumstances. It means finding the right people: employees, customers, suppliers, and yes political representatives. It can be very hard.

And it doesn’t matter how loud you sing the anthem, how hard you work, how white you are, or how long the farm has been in the family.

If you are incompetent, Capitalism will choose you for Bankruptcy.

u/TheVirginVibes 13h ago

Hey whoaaaa with your logic. I think the main thing to focus on is the 5 trans athletes in sports, and minorities eating your pets.

The concept of the small town farm is not economically viable , and that's why these people have become accustomed to government subsidies to keep it going.

See what people don't understand is these farmers don't put up their own money. They're given very low interest , short term loans to get by until they sell their crop or herd , and then they repay that loan.

The problem they're having is because of inflation and rising resource costs like fertilizer and gasoline , they will run a negative when they sell their product and therefore will not be able to pay back the loans.

Their profit margin has always been very thin , and now they're gonna run in the negative.

Now , I certainly sympathize with anybody who's just trying to make a living and things beyond that control hinder that..

But any farmer or rancher , who has been in this business for a long time , will tell you that the business has highs and lows , and some years you're gonna lose money and some years you're gonna make money , just like every other marketable product. That's why smart businesses build reserves over the years to get by when business is bad. Instead , these people buy pickup trucks and kansas city cheifs season tickets.

But i'm sure that the ones that consider themselves republicans should look themselves in the face and wonder why they back a political system that says that if you fail , then you fail that the government and the people have no obligation to help you if you run a small business.

Especially considering their livelihood depends on the opposite.

I mean , these guys should be familiar with this phrase..

You reap what you sow

What we have right now is the result of people that don't understand complex economic systems voting to preserve social structures that benefit them at the cost of others living with the consequences of their poorly thought out choices. In short "I just didn't want gay people around my kids, Mexican people getting food stamps, and I liked the way he pissed off the libs. I didn't know he was going to bee so incompetent at running the country. It's almost like the things I liked about him were of no value. I feel betrayed by my own stupidity."

He knew that Liberals were against every promise that Trump lied about. He made the conscious decision to never look into it. He had his chance to try to avoid this, and he didn't take it.

Also, I love how nearly (or actually) every farmer we've seen, have been growing cashcrops that are for export only. Lmfao! You think we care about a cashcrop farmer? You wanna threaten the rest of America's food chain, when you're barely even a part of it? Okay buddy.

The ranchers have more of a stump to lean on, which still ain't enough.

“Trade wars are fun and easy to win” - Donald Trump.
Just hold on farmers it will all work out.

12

u/Responsible-Win-4348 13h ago

Who did you vote for? Yeah, enjoy that.

12

u/AcanthaceaeWitty2662 13h ago

That's the thing that gets me, you will never hate a Republican as much as they hate you. It's literally why we aren't allowed to have nice things, such as universal income or Medicare for all type deal. These people hate so much, and then wonder why we aren't surprised when they lose their livelihood to the people they voted for, simply because they said they'd hurt "the other".

You will never hate Republicans as much as they hate you

They don’t realize this isn’t a bug but a feature.

Project 2025 wants those farmers as cheap labor for the corporations who will come in and buy their now worthless bankrupt farms for pennies on the dollar. Once they have all of the peasants under their thumbs they will remove the tariffs and control agriculture.

I want to dunk on the people I see in these videos so badly. But I’m from rural KY and grew up on a farm.

I wish these people would understand that every bad policy that has hurt them was done by the people they support. And continuing to support these people means prolonging their suffering.

I just feel that after losing their money, their farm, their identity that they still wouldn’t change their views. And that makes me incredibly sad.

10

u/OuijaFox 13h ago

I grew up in the Deep South surrounded by people like this.
I grew up in the same shit they did and didn’t use it as an excuse to be a hateful bigoted loser.

So I’ll dunk on them every day. I’ll remind them to their faces. I’ll mock them and insult them.
They won’t listen to facts or reason or logic so I’ll remind them that they are failures. That their ancestors would be ashamed of them for losing the farm.

Something that would shock the founding fathers (everything trump does would shock them), is Trump's ability to give people billions of dollars without Congressional approval.

If the president has the power of the purse then checks and balances mean nothing.

They would also be shocked by how the supreme court has decided that they can literally make laws, bypassing the other two branches.

I keep wondering if trump is going to pull a last minute buy their vote. Not that he would need to do something dramatic at this point to retain their vote.

It's sad and pathetic

Dude is crying about losing his farm and being on 4 different blood pressure medicines. Good thing he voted to tear down the ACA too. I want to have compassion but guy slamming his own dick in the screen door then asking why he can't piss straight.

That being said, I'm still gonna support universal healthcare, even if it helps idiots like him.

7

8

u/LemurKing2019 13h ago

“What do you think about when you go to bed at night?”

The honest answer is “I’d do it all again to own the libs. And all the trans athletes in college sports. Stopping all 10 of them are worth my generational farm.”

These folks have 0 remorse for their vote and STILL don’t understand why everyone in the country isn’t just falling over themselves to help the farming community. F them all. Let them be forced to sell their farms and then work it for minimum wage just like they want to do.

6

u/Ok_Donut3992 12h ago

7

u/TheGrayingTech 11h ago

So…. What do they propose is the stitch? Because all my life I’ve heard this same story over and over. Remember farm aid? I had/have 3 family members farming in Central KY and relied on dairy and tobacco prices. When those fell, so did the farm.

5

u/doslobo33 11h ago

This is where idiots fall for the bullshit. The court found the tariffs illegals and order the government to reimburse, so how do you pay farmers of you are reimbursing corporations. What a scheme.

All of these farmers have something’s in common. They all watched Fox News which is basically the National Enquirer over the air and they believed all the lies they Trump and them Republican politicians spewed on a daily basis. Now they are paying the price for being so divisive, hateful and ignorant. They want others to suffer so they could benefit but the con-man and grifter they chose to worship and follow had other plans. Like enriching himself and his family.

Yeah, we know how it feels. We've been feeling it for decades every time Republicans are running the show. We need the basics so we can get to work living and earning, too, but people like you keep voting to starve us out.

Pro-tip: Most Democrats are centrist, which means if you vote for a Democrat, you'll still get center-right economic policy, but that's executed competently and shores up the economy as a whole with safety net programs—which, by the way, benefit you, too.

So spare us your existential distress. You vote it onto the rest of us every chance you get.
