It turns out you cannot eat pure political rhetoric when the trade war bill comes due.

Nothing screams rugged, independent free-market capitalism quite like begging the government for a multibillion-dollar bailout because your own preferred trade policies vaporized your customer base.

You voted to burn down the global grain market and are now stunned to discover you actually have to live inside the ashes.
Broad tariff regimes inevitably trigger direct retaliatory duties on domestic agricultural exports, converting thriving family operations into federally dependent welfare cases overnight. Handing out billions in taxpayer-funded stopgap relief does not recover structural export market share; it simply forces the public to subsidize avoidable self-inflicted losses while multi-generational farms fold under the debt.

It’s socialism when we help people I don’t like. But when I get it it is because I’m a hard worker!

and 1985, 1998, 2018, 2020, 2024, and 2025. Farmers have been into Socialism for decades. They just conveniently forget that.

That's an obvious counterfactual: literally every person on earth is fine with socialism for themselves and people they like and trust to not be a social albatross. It's actually kind of dumb to have a no-limits socialism. Never has such a system existed and survived for long.
