Discussion What's your opinion on capital punishment? Can you be vegan and pro death penalty?

Reading the news of the botched execution in Tennessee this past week has me questioning my moral consistency. I was pro death penalty at first, but I'm doing research and I'm realizing how inhumane and unethical these executions are and how they don't actually save the tax payers money in the long run because it's so expensive to execute an inmate. Is it morally consistent to be pro death penality and be vegan? I'm pro choice, if that changes anything. I feel like sometimes I think life is sacred, other times not. Thanks for reading this and your input.

Question How to store seitan dough?

So I was thinking of meal prepping seitan but I'm unsure of how to go abt doing this my method was going to be pre preparing the dough and then just cooking it throughout the week but I'm unsure if the dough itself will hold up. Is there a better method to meal prepping seitan that doesn't involve me cooking 5-7 servings of it all at once? I was thinking of making some seitan loafs and experimenting with different seasonings and broths(too steam it in) throughout the week but if the dough won't hold up in the fridge I can only cook one very large batch of seitan and dividing it up throughout the week.

For additional information I'm using vital wheat gluten not washed flour.

Rant I'm so sick of this school

I'm in a boarding school in Japan and recently went vegan. Basically everything isnt vegan, not even vegetarian. There are allergy labels labeling allergans or meat/fish but they're not correct half of the time. The vegetable salads are labeled with chicken sometimes (with no chicken in it?), and today there was a salad option that seemed fine. It wasn't even labeled with any fish allergan? Then I looked closer and there were white things with eyes, they were tiny fish. Last night the vegetarian section had gelatin. WHY???

For a movement built on freeing the most oppressed beings on the planet, knowing who is most likely to listen, and who is determined to shut down, matters. It isn’t about pandering. It’s about strategy.

Question Is there anywhere I can buy fake ground beef (impossible beef, beyond beef, etc) in bulk?

The past few weeks my local grocery stores have been out of both brands, and I typically use this as a regular part of my diet. I would love to start making other foods in bulk with fake meat as well (meatballs, meatloaf, etc) and freezing for meal prep, but even when it's in stock the biggest size I can ever find is 12oz. I know there are tons of meat companies that send stuff in the mail with freezer packs to keep it from spoiling - is there an online vegan store like that for fresh/frozen "meat"?

Activism factory farming is on the rise in nigeria and a few tiny brand new orgs are trying to get ahead of it before it locks in :(

most of the factory farming fight is cleanup, right? the system's already built, the barns are already full, and advocates are trying to undo decades of damage. but in nigeria it's still rising, which means there's a window to get in BEFORE it becomes the default. that's so rare and honestly kind of hopeful??

Animal Advocacy Africa just wrapped a fellowship in Nigeria and they're now incubating 2-3 brand new projects that came out of it, all focused on stopping factory farming from taking hold there. lowkey love that they're betting on local people building local orgs instead of parachuting in from outside. respect.

anyway these new orgs need logos. the names and brand identities are already done, so it's not "invent a whole brand from scratch"... it's taking something that already exists and giving it a face. if you're a designer who wants a portfolio piece that actually means something, this is it.

it's unpaid, these orgs are literally brand new and don't have budgets yet. short-term project.

Help me find this vegan cookbook for my partner's birthday please!!!

I saw it on a website a few weeks ago and now I can't remember the name of it! From what I recall, it is a new book coming out and has an all maroon/brick red hardcover with no print on the front (I think the name of it was pressed into the cover?) I think it is of international recipes that are naturally vegan? It was still in the start-up phase and isn't on store shelves yet. I'm sorry I can't remember much more! Any help would be appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

Food I miss the availability of products

While it is is healthier and better for us to make our ricotta and mozzarella from scratch, it's also insanely labour intensive. As a mom, I really enjoyed the miyokos liquid mozzarella or tofutti ricotta. Especially when making a Sunday night Lasagna. Now in San Antonio I can't find these anymore. It seems more and more of our products are disappearing.

Again I'm happy to make everything from scratch but sometimes I don't have the time or mental fortitude.

Why is everything disappearing 😭😭😭😭

Discussion The struggle to change for the better

I know I should become vegan.

I know I should eat less calories than I burn.

I know I should excercise more.

I know I should use my phone less.

I know I should be more politically active in my community.

I know I should stop procrastinating.

There's so many things I know I should start/stop doing so I can change for the better, but after all these years I still can't manage to overcome these specific struggles.

I feel like a lost cause. I feel like I have tried so hard to change, and failed.

How did/do you do it?

Discussion How can I encourage my friends to go plant-based?

So I have been a vegetarian since my friends knew me, and I have recently gone plant-based (I still wear the leather jacket, belts, and boots that I bought before I changed so I am not really comfortable using the term vegan for myself yet). Most of them eat very little meat already (too expensive anyway), but they still eat a lot of cheese and eggs.
I don't want to be pushy, but now I've opened my eyes to what is actually happening, I cannot see my friends as I used to, if they keep exploiting animals.
Both of them are completely anti (human) exploitation and punk/anarchists, so I felt like a lot of the arguments could ring a bell?
But I don't know, they're both like "I know you're right but I won't" (which is an argument I really don't like). I think they are aware of the cognitive dissonance.
They are kind of open, and I am trying to give them time (I mean I have been a vegetarian for three years before going plant-based, so I can't really reproach them not to go vegan instantly), but I find it disgusting that they still eat animals and animal products. When I am with them, they are totally fine with eating vegan food, and one of them really loves tofu, so I am hopeful.

So yeah, they already are halfway through, I guess, and I would like to know if you had some tips/advice to help me encourage them?

EDIT: thanks everyone! I've read your replies and that's very helpful, and gives me a lot of hope! I'll try to cook for them when I can.
Also, I wanted to clarify that most of the time, our conversation on the topic come from them. I never initiate, and I try to stay factual and not become defensive. Anyway they do understand, they just won't do it, at least for now, probably because it's difficult to change all of your diet (especially since both have depression and some kind of ADHD/autism).

Question How do you handle partner and closest ones not caring about the animals and environment?

I recently went vegan. Because I saw a video here and there about the treatment of the farm animals on my instagram. After that I’ve seen more and more and now I feel like shit all the time, and I feel like absolutely no one cares. At least in my circle of people.
My partner is not vegan, and I understand it’s a hard change to stop dissociating between the ”product” you eat, and the animal I guess?
I just feel like everybody only thinks of themselves.
How do you guys handle being with a partner or hanging out with loved ones with such different views on it?
They won’t even buy ”not tested on animals” or ”less climate impact”. Because they refuse to give up their comfort. I feel like I’m going insane because it feels so urgent and people are just thinking about themselves.

Rant Environmentalist hypocrisy

I know I'm not the first to make this rant. I know I won't be the last. Lately, it has been really getting under my skin the way self professed "environmentalists" will bend over backwards to "reduce their carbon footprint" when they won't give up animal products! Using animal products is the worst possible thing you can do for the environment!

Go ahead. Swear off plastic straws. Buy only clean beauty products. Plant 100 trees. Drive an electric car. Better yet, bike everywhere. Use only recycled paper products. Wipe your ass with old wash cloths. Keep your house at 60° in winter and 80° in summer. Buy only used/"eco conscious" fashion. Shop only at your local farmer's market. Get all new EnergyStar appliances. Write to your congressmen about AI and data centers. Take Amtrak to BurningMan. Use only compostable bags (which are mostly a marketing gimmick because nearly every one of them has fine print somewhere that says, "For composting at commercial facilities only."). Have yourself a big ol' recycled paper ticker tape parade on Earth Day. Doing all that combined STILL won't do jack shit compared to giving up animal products!

Worse, there are lots of "environmentalists" who claim that vegans are worse for the planet because of -shudder- MONOCROPS! They totally leave out that most of those crops feed farmed animals.

I know, I know the information is suppressed. My brother in law is a chef. He doesn't proclaim to be an environmentalist but he has studied food and food production his whole life. He's like 50. Even he had NEVER heard that animal agriculture is horrible for the planet! He also got mad that I told him to look it up precisely because he's studied food his whole life.

BUT, people who call themselves environmentalists should be doing the extra work to learn about this stuff if they actually care. WHY won't they let go of the corpses? Do they know and just don't care? Or do they really not know better? Or is "environmentalist" become yet another overuses, nebulous term that basically means, "I care about this sometimes."

Anyway, RAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!

US Supreme Court should hear cases against factory animals farms. Case being heard this session blames oil companies and completely ignores factory farming.

The US Supreme Court is hearing a case against the oil industry (Suncor Energy vs. Boulder County)
The case is bringing the question of whether energy companies should be responsible for environmental impact at the state level.
Why are there so many people that deny the damage and harm caused by factory farm operations? Toxic Waste and Manure
Volume: U.S. CAFOs confine billions of animals and produce over 900 billion to 1 trillion pounds of untreated manure and agricultural sewage every year—vastly exceeding total human waste production.
(Google AI statistics- quick search)
This is only mentioning the sewage and waste from these farms.
I’m an ethical vegan, and what I promote is generally for the animals, but when environmental advocates bring cases to the Supreme Court, completely ignoring the impact of factory farms, I question motive and logic of it.
It seems like if we close these farms and find alternative resources and land space for non-animal agriculture, it would solve many problems.
How are these issues ignored by environmentalists? Are they just not as knowledgeable as they claim to be or choose to ignore because of the financial benefits from factory farming and animal product sales? The answer is so obvious!

Health Flu Vaccine - Flublok is Vegan

I just got my annual flu shot, and as usual asked for Flublok at the pharmacy.

Is Flublok Vegan?

Yes. Flublok is completely egg-free, cell-culture-free, and manufactured using a recombinant DNA technology platform (grown in an insect cell line using an expression system). It contains no animal products or byproducts, making it a preferred choice for individuals following a plant-based or vegan lifestyle.

Age Approval

Flublok is approved by the FDA for individuals 9 years of age and older. It is not authorized for children under 9.

Effectiveness vs. Standard Egg-Based Shots

Flublok is more effective.

Higher Antigen Content: Flublok contains three times the active antigen (hemagglutinin) content compared to standard-dose egg-based flu shots.

Clinical Superiority: Clinical trials and large-scale real-world studies (such as those published by Kaiser Permanente) have demonstrated that Flublok reduces the incidence of confirmed influenza infections by roughly 15% more than standard-dose quadrivalent vaccines, offering stronger protection—particularly noted in adult and older populations.

No Egg-Adaptation Mutation: Traditional egg-based vaccines can sometimes undergo mutations while growing inside chicken eggs that make them a slightly poorer match to circulating wild strains. Because Flublok is synthetically engineered, it maintains an exact antigenic match to the strains selected by the FDA.

Why Isn't It Given to Everybody by Default?

Despite its higher efficacy, it is not the default universal shot for several practical reasons:

Age Restrictions: Because it is only approved for ages 9 and up, it cannot be given to toddlers and infants, meaning public health clinics that vaccinate entire families often stock versatile standard shots.

Supply Chain and Manufacturing: Standard egg-based vaccines have a massive, decades-old global manufacturing infrastructure that produces the vast majority of the world's supply. Recombinant production requires specialized facilities.

Cost and Logistics: It is more expensive to produce, and many provider offices or smaller clinics stock standard options to keep purchasing and stocking logistics simple.

Cost and Insurance Coverage

Cost: Flublok is generally more expensive out-of-pocket than standard egg-based flu shots if paying pure cash price without a vaccine policy.

Insurance Coverage: Under the Affordable Care Act, most commercial health insurance plans, Medicare Part B, and Medicaid are required to cover Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)-recommended vaccines at 100% with no out-of-pocket copay when administered in-network or at participating pharmacies. However, it is always wise to double-check with your specific insurance provider or pharmacy beforehand to ensure they process recombinant vaccines smoothly under your plan.

Do vegans who say it’s okay if others eat meat actually believe it?

I’m very new to being vegan but after watching some different things such as dominion and opening my eyes to the fact dealing with slight inconveniences are worth it if it means doing everything in my power to not contribute to the horrors. I genuinely am curious. Do vegans who overly emphasis how okay it is to eat meat actually believe that? Or do they believe that if they say that, it’s more likely to get people to reduce animal product consumption? I’ve honestly always wondered if they were doing it to try and console the massive “I like them but not when they’re forcing it onto others” mindset. Is being vegan not usually done with the notion that harming and abusing animals is wrong? In their mind while they say “and that’s okay” are they really thinking, “I have to do this because it’s the only way to prevent further animal suffering/deaths even if it’s not completely” or is it more like “it won’t make a different anyways, I jusy do this for the health benefits”? Does anyone have any idea what the mindset is behind it?

Furthermore, as a new vegan, if I am in their position, are there any tips for how I should talk about my veganism? I’m nervous about how people will react because even the most progressive people I know don’t really care about veganism or don’t take it super seriously, and I’m afraid there could be tension if I bring up the fact that eating meat is wrong whilst also remaining friends with them and the stress of them realizing that I see what they’re doing as very wrong rather than “it’s okay”.

Food Protein suggestions?

Hello,
I’m relatively new to being vegan, and right now I’m trying to focus on getting a good amount of protein from my meals. I run daily and left around 3-4 times per week.
I do quite enjoy cooking and I’m creative in the kitchen, so I’m open to any meal ideas. I’ve tried tofu, and tried to spice it up several different ways. There’s just one thing I can’t get past with it: the texture.
So if anyone has any other suggestions for a protein replacement, I’d appreciate it. :)

Disturbing An interesting post on NextDoor regarding petri dish meat and 3D printed soy products which imitate meat.

Excerpt: "#news The first 3D printed 'meat' has federal clearance and is about to be sold in the United States. Packaging will not say 'lab-grown meat' because there is not a law that requires the packaging to say it was printed."

I am sort of surprised that such a discussion will appear in the NextDoor app.

Reaction to accidentally eating dairy?

I got a veggie burrito from Del Taco yesterday, which I ordered with no cheese or sour cream. While eating it, something tasted “off” but I couldn’t see any dairy. After finishing it, I’ve had a feeling like a lump in the back of my throat ever since. Has this happened to anyone before? Is it a dairy allergy or just in my head? I don’t have an upset stomach.

Discussion What generation is the most vegan?

I tend to think of veganism as a more “young” movement. Of course there are vegans of all ages and we have been around for thousands of years, but it society today, what generation or age group do you think is the most vegan? I’m banking on younger millennials to older Gen Z. Thoughts?

Pope Leo XIV reminds us:

“Peace must be extended to the entire family of Creation.”

Not just to those who look like us.
Not just to those who speak like us.
Not just to human beings.

The entire family of creation.

Let our compassion leave not a single creature excluded.

Rant I just saw graphic imagery and I'm struggling to cope.

Earlier today, a close friend of mine sent me a picture of the raw frog's legs from their dinner prep. This friend knows I am vegan and usually they are pretty good about not sending me disturbing photos. I am certain that their intent wasn't to cause distress. However, needless to say, I was and am very distressed by what I saw.

To me, I might as well have seen a bowl of severed human legs. I felt like I was having an anxiety attack. Then I asked my friend how they were completely okay with the frogs legs, but became squeamish while we were watching a horror movie where a man had his foot cut off. The reply? Frogs are food. I immediately felt sick to my stomach. All I could think of was how those frogs weren't food and they deserved to live. Why did they have to die to fill some human's belly?

I have been vegan for nearly ten years now and somehow I think I became desensitized to some imagery of "meat". I thought this was fine because it was probably my brain's way of protecting itself and making it possible for me to interact with omnis but now I feel like this might have been the gut punch I needed. Something about that sight unnerved me. It was like walking through a butcher's freezer. As much as I want to turn away from it, I feel like I need to acknowledge the injustice and the unvarnished horror of what happened to those frogs.

Adding to this, I happened to be with another omni friend when this photo was sent to me and I was so shaken that I had to excuse myself from the conversation. After explaining myself, they tried to be understanding but it was so so clear that they just didn't get it. This was not a big deal to them and I probably seemed silly. The irony is that we were discussing empathy and it hit me again just how suddenly human empathy ends at animal suffering/death.

I don't have any vegan friends to talk to about this and I feel like this whole thing is going to haunt me for awhile. Part of me is embarrassed and then another part of me is angry for the side of me that's embarrassed for feeling horrified at seeing the aftermath of the murder of other living beings. I guess I came here to commiserate with other vegans because I feel like i took crazy pills right now. It's so emotionally isolating always being the only vegan.

TL;DR: My well-meaning friend sent me a picture of raw frog's legs from their meal preparations and it shocked me and possibly triggered a small anxiety attack.

Note: Please don't make disparaging remarks about my friend or suggest that I cut them off. That is out of the question. I also know that their dish was cultural and I am respectful of that (as I hope everyone here will be within reason) but murder is murder.
