📱 Modpost [Event/Competition] Swiss Food Week — let’s see what you're cooking!

Hey r/Switzerland!

It's me again, u/TheRealMudi! After our last successful event; the Photography Competition, I've returned to you with another event: Swiss Food Week!

The idea is simple: from Monday, the 12th of October to Sunday, 18th of October, we celebrate Swiss food by making it, sharing it, and voting for our favourites.

And please, let's not make this seven days of just fondue and raclette lol nothing against melted cheese, but let's give the rest of Swiss cuisine a chance too. Regional specialities, family recipes, baked goods, so on. As long as it is Swiss or has cultural/social relevance to Switzerland, it is accepted!

How to participate

đŸœïž For the competition: Post a photo of your dish with a comment in THIS megathread (submissions will be accepted starting the 12th!). Include the dish's name and a little about it. Recipes are very welcome!

📾 For the general event: You are also welcome to share your food in the regular subreddit. These posts are part of the event, but only entries in the megathread count towards the competition.

How the competition works

  • One entry per person, featuring food you made and photographed yourself.
  • Upvote the entries you like in the megathread.
  • Votes are counted on the 20th of October, 12:00.
  • The entry with the highest comment score at the deadline wins eternal bragging rights and receive their unique flair: Swiss Food Champion 2026 (or another relevant flair they might request).

I hope that many will participate and join in on the fun and voting!

📱 Modpost Mod applications now open!

Hi! We are an ever-growing sub, and some of our most beloved mods have recently decided to no longer be active. Hence, we are looking for some new team members for the mod team of r/switzerland and r/askswitzerland.

Let us know if you'd like to help out.

What modding r/Switzerland entails

  • It's not about being power-hungry overlords.
  • It's more about stickling to the rules in peak Swiss fashion (and letting your best judgment guide you).
  • We'd love the new mods to take an active part in assessing reported and filtered posts and comments relatively frequently.
  • Take active part in the community by setting a good example.
  • It's super cool if you want to take a part in guiding the sub into its future, or taking a lead in organizing sub events, or rewriting automod and css code. It's also super cool if you just want to help out with removing content that shouldn't be here. Both kinds of mod will be welcome additions to the team!

Finally, a small lists of requirements:

  • Be an active member of the community in good standing (You don't have to have made hundreds of comments here; and it's fine if you had a few minor infractions in the past (as long as you did not blatantly break subreddit rules in a quite bad way).
  • Have close ties with Switzerland.
  • Speak one of the following languages: French or Swiss-German at a native level of proficiency. (standard German doesn't cut it) + English. (any other national language is a plus)
  • Currently, we are using discord to communicate in the mod team, so you would be required to be active on discord as well.
  • previous mod experience not required but will be taken into consideration.
  • We are looking for people that are active during night time mostly. Feel free to apply even if you are not a night timer but do take this into account.

What do I get for it?

A warm, fuzzy feeling, and if we are lucky reddit, inc has some money lying around and send us a box of chocolate (not that this has ever happened). Oh, and it's quite rewarding to help out this pretty awesome place, being the guardian.

I'm interested! How to apply, what are the next steps?

Send a message to the mods at this link with the title "Mod application". Tell us a bit about yourself:

  • Which region/time zone do you live in?
  • What time of the day are you active in?
  • What languages do you speak?
  • Do you have any mod experience? (remember, it's no problem if you don't)
  • Any cool stuff about you that the mod team should know about?

That's it! As we are all volunteers doing this besides our day jobs and families, we may not be able to quickly make a selection - sorry in advance if that should happen! We'll try to be quick :)

Feel free to reach out through modmail or comment below if you got any questions!

Theft from our car while visiting Fort de Chillon – be careful if you park in the area on 04.10.2026

Well, where do I even start

This morning, I received an email with a nice offer to visit the Fort de Chillon Museum. I mentioned it to my wife and we thought, why not make a family day out of it with our son? We also invited my sister and my niece, who is one year older than our son.

After a little over an hour’s drive, we arrived and found the area already packed with people, with almost no parking spaces available. We turned around towards Villeneuve and eventually found a spot at the far end of the parking area near the castle.

We got the children out of their car seats, grabbed our bags, I locked the car, and we headed to the fort.

About 1.5 hours later, we came back to the car. As we approached it, I immediately noticed something strange: the passenger door wasn’t completely closed.

My wife panicked and asked me to check the pocket behind the driver’s seat because she had left her wallet there.

I checked. The wallet was gone.

We emptied our backpacks, hoping that maybe she had taken it with her without remembering. Nothing.
That was when we realized that someone had entered our car and stolen the wallet.

Inside was a significant amount of cash, both my wife’s Swiss and German ID documents, her bank cards, her and our son’s insurance cards, as well as photos and other personal belongings.

I immediately called the police. They explained that because there were apparently no visible signs of forced entry, nobody would come to the scene and that we would need to go to the nearest police station to file a report.

I have to admit that I was quite surprised that nobody would come to check for possible cameras or other evidence. I understand that identifying the people responsible for this kind of theft may be difficult, but when you have just lost all of those documents and belongings, it is still extremely frustrating.

So we went to the police station in Villeneuve and filed a report.

Fortunately, after checking our household insurance policy, I found that we have coverage for theft outside the home, with a CHF 200 deductible. I still need to check exactly what is covered and up to what limits.

Beyond the money and all the administrative hassle that now awaits us, the whole experience was simply awful. When we got home, our 2œ-year-old son, who probably didn’t really understand what had happened but clearly felt our stress, wouldn’t leave my side. He finally fell asleep around 9:45 pm after crying several times.

I’m not really looking for anything specific with this post. First of all, I just needed to get the frustration off my chest. But more importantly, if this post can prevent the same thing from happening to someone else, then at least something useful will come out of it.

The police told us that thefts from vehicles are relatively common in this area. They also mentioned that thieves may use methods or devices that can interfere with remote vehicle locking.

So if you park around Chillon — or really anywhere busy and touristy — don’t just press the button on your key and walk away. Physically check that your doors are actually locked, and don’t leave valuables inside the car.

And just in case:

If anyone happened to find a pink/beige Calvin Klein women’s wallet somewhere around Chillon/Villeneuve, or saw anything suspicious today, Sunday 4 October 2026, between approximately 12:50 pm and 2:30 pm, I would be extremely grateful for any information.
A police report has been filed.
And most importantly: please be careful with your cars and belongings if you’re visiting the area.

Is it appropriate to give my RAV advisor a chocolate as I deregister?

My RAV instructor was extremely kind as I finished my PhD a couple of months ago. Gave me a lot of support, helped me with documentation etc. I’m from the UK where it’s okay to gift something *SMALL* to those who have helped you, but I’m unsure on the ethics of giving something to a government official. I don’t want to get them into trouble or sound weird, I just want to truly show my appreciation for the support.

Buying an older house in Switzerland worth the risk?

I’m 31, Swiss, born and raised here, and living in the St. Gallen / Eastern Switzerland area. My partner and I are looking to buy a single-family house.

The problem is that newer or nicely renovated houses are often very expensive, so I’m increasingly considering buying an older house that needs renovation.

I’m a trained electrician, although I haven’t worked in the trade for several years. I could do some work myself, but I work full-time in a management position and don’t have enough time to take on a full renovation.

My main concern is that an older house could become a financial black hole due to hidden issues such as asbestos, moisture in the basement, roof or structural problems, old heating systems, poor insulation or unexpected costs once renovations start.

I’m not looking at a specific property yet, but I’d like to understand the risks better.

For those who bought and renovated an older house in Switzerland:

  • Did the renovation stay close to budget?
  • What problems did you underestimate?
  • What would you definitely have inspected before buying?
  • Would you buy an older house again?
  • Would you recommend bringing in a building expert or architect before making an offer?

I’m also wondering whether building new might actually be more predictable, although I know very little about permits, zoning and the overall process in Switzerland.

What is up with this? Womens toilet does not have a single camera, but mens do? (I am a woman, my boyfriend took this picture in his WC). I'm pretty sure this is illegal. Can I report this somewhere or am I mistaken?

After Coop, starting this week my Lidl does this as well. Bonus points for selling shrinkflation to the point where it's getting utterly pathetic. I wonder why nobody buys this Prosciutto...

Pedestrian crossings rant

I live in ZĂŒrich surroundings.

I don't care how petty I will sound.

I see many drivers ignoring the pedestrian crossings, sometimes multiple in a row.

It happened that I had to pull hard on my dog so it does not get ran over. They don't even brake.

Before I cross, I always see if a car is coming and then do the first step on the road, and only if a car is in a reasonable distance to stop. I am a driver myself and I always stop when I am driving.

Is there anything to do in these cases? Or wait to get ran over?

If I report them to the police, does it become very complicated afterwards? Has anyone done it?

PRIMINFO: PrÀmienrechner mistakes?

Maybe someone found something similar:

I have been using the www.priminfo.admin.ch, as mostly everyone does, to check for the cheapest Health Insurance, but for some reason, last year and again this year, Visana for instance, is not being shown the correct amount.

For instance on Priminfo it shows 506 (cheapest model) and if you go to Visana’s website it is actually 455,85.

Canton: Basel-Stadt

I wonder if there are any other mistakes? Did you also find some?

I need to find this mug from Coop

Post image
23 Upvotes

my parents just threw out my favorite mug without my knowledge and I'm really sad about it, because I bought it around 2023-ish in a big Coop. It was part of their yearly random christmas collection, and I haven't seen it anywhere since then (it wasn't part of a sticker collecting thing, just a normal mug during christmas). I tried looking on google, coop and riccardo but can't find it.

I can't find any picture of it, so I drew what it looked like. It was porcelaine with red glaze; I loved it cause it had a simple and silly reindeer with string lights on it with the bottom text "happy holidays!". The reindeer and text were unglazed, so the white color came from the exposed part of the material of the mug. The rim of the mug also curved smoothly inward, which made it really nice to drink out of.

I hope someone knows where I could find it, or even own one :'( thanks for any responses in advance <3

GĂŒnstiges Mobile Abo in der Schweiz – GoMo oder spusu 10? Erfahrungen & Alternativen gesucht

Who is the Swiss Lotto guy?

I am obsessed with the Swiss Lotto guy: his florid costumes, his confident air of being known to the viewer. Is this fellow a well-known actor or other entertainer? Is he by contrast only the mascot for the lottery? Please help advance my integration by filling me in on this omnipresent chap.

Due to retirement, a bicycle and moped repair shop is looking for a mechanic in Unterkulm AG

Edit: the owner has found a buyer.

I was just there, and the gentleman happily told me that Tele M1 aired a segment last weekend, and by Tuesday they had already found a serious buyer.

I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to read and/or share this post. Thank you so much.

Post: As the title suggests, the bike and moped repair shop 2-Radegge in my village is looking for a successor.

I asked the elderly gentleman if it would be okay to make his search public; he agreed. He had already placed an ad in the local newspaper but hadn’t found anyone interested yet.

I thought it would be a good idea to expand the search via Reddit a bit -maybe someone will come forward who’s wanted to open a repair shop for a long time but never quite had the spark to get started.

For us locals, it would be a huge loss to no longer have a bike repair shop in the area.

If anyone is actually interested, they should contact him directly.

Thank you very much for your attention.

Is it more common to find Swiss-Germans that speak fluent french, than Swiss-French who speak fluent german?

Yes, it's rare in both regions to find someone who speaks another swiss language fluenty, except maybe swiss kids with parents from Italy who speak italian at home since the italian diaspora in switzerland is huge.

Nowadays most people speak English and that holds true everywhere in Switzerland (can't really speak about Ticino but someone from there could confirm).

But I still notice that when in Bern, Biel, Lausanne or Fribourg, or even Basel, or Valais, it's more likely to find Swiss-Germans who speak fluent french than Swiss-French who speak fluent german. Do you also notice this? If so, why? Is it because French is a more international language than german, so swiss-german are more likely to learn it?

But still, german is important in Switzerland, so I would guess Swiss-French also have an incentive to learn german, but that's not what I observe when I am in Fribourg, Lausanne, or even Biel/bienne where i hear much more french spoken in a german accent, than german spoken in a french accent

Insurance/Membership taking over medevac-costs not covered by health-insurance?

hi,

my mom (reitred) encountered seizures (TIA) and had to be transportet - by helicopter - to hospital (including a transfer to another one after she was stabilised). the costs gonna be VERY high and - of course - health insurance only covers 50% (she does not have a "Zusatzversicherung")

while i know there's nothing for "transports past", question now is for any (hopefully never occuring) future situations:

is there a solution out there taking care of transportcosts not taken over by health-insurance
=> and does not exclude transports due to preexisting conditions? (bc what if she encounters another TIA and again needs an medevac)

i read about sos144, but they exclude transports for preexisting conditions (so does the TCS Schutzbrief, and all "Zusatzversicherungen")... Rega can but doesn't have to forfait on costs, but only if the transport was done by rega (mom for eg was transported with Alpine Air Ambulance)...

Is there a possible alternative? Or is essentially, due to the preexisting condition, "all a lost cause"?

Diese Zusatzversicherung ist ein Betrug.

Thumbnail
gallery
50 Upvotes

Today I cried at the pharmacy

2 days ago I sliced my toe open while walking to get myself a glass of water during the night. As a result I had to get some stitches, which was my first real encounter with Swiss healthcare system.

The doctor stitched me up under local anaesthesia and sent me on my way. No pain meds. Once the anaesthetic wore off, the next 24 hours were a complete shit show. Regular painkillers did absolutely nothing so I barely slept.

The next morning, I called the Praxis asking for pain meds presciprion. They offered to MAIL it to me. When I explained that I couldn't exactly wait for Swiss Post while barely able to walk, they agreed to send it electronically to the pharmacy... for an extra fee.

They also refused any callback informing me when the prescription is going to be ready (mind you, I can barely walk so I really do not want to make unnecessary trips).

So after work, I limped to the pharmacy...

No prescription.

The Praxis was already closed, and I had been waiting for those painkillers like a kid waiting for Christmas. When the pharmacist couldn't find anything, I just burst into tears. Sleep deprivation + intense pain = apparently my emotional limit.

So now I'm looking forward to another sleepless night, plus a bill for the "expedited" electronic prescription that may or may not exist.

This normal experiece with the health care system here? I've always been given clear aftercare instructions and necessary meds after procedures outside of CH. Am I supposed to be more assertive here and specifically ask for everything?

Be careful with mobileup - sold me a US phone without telling me

I recently switched mobile providers and suddenly couldn't make calls anymore. Turns out mobileup sold me a US version of the Galaxy S22+ back in 2025, which wasn't mentioned anywhere when I bought it. Since the 3G shutdown, it can't make calls on my Swiss provider, Warranty expired, so no solution from them.

Be aware, check the model number before buying, and maybe avoid mobileup.
