📢 Modpost Mod applications now open!
Hi! We are an ever-growing sub, and some of our most beloved mods have recently decided to no longer be active. Hence, we are looking for some new team members for the mod team of r/switzerland and r/askswitzerland.
Let us know if you'd like to help out.
What modding r/Switzerland entails
- It's not about being power-hungry overlords.
- It's more about stickling to the rules in peak Swiss fashion (and letting your best judgment guide you).
- We'd love the new mods to take an active part in assessing reported and filtered posts and comments relatively frequently.
- Take active part in the community by setting a good example.
- It's super cool if you want to take a part in guiding the sub into its future, or taking a lead in organizing sub events, or rewriting automod and css code. It's also super cool if you just want to help out with removing content that shouldn't be here. Both kinds of mod will be welcome additions to the team!
Finally, a small lists of requirements:
- Be an active member of the community in good standing (You don't have to have made hundreds of comments here; and it's fine if you had a few minor infractions in the past (as long as you did not blatantly break subreddit rules in a quite bad way).
- Have close ties with Switzerland.
- Speak one of the following languages: French or Swiss-German at a native level of proficiency. (standard German doesn't cut it) + English. (any other national language is a plus)
- Currently, we are using discord to communicate in the mod team, so you would be required to be active on discord as well.
- previous mod experience not required but will be taken into consideration.
- We are looking for people that are active during night time mostly. Feel free to apply even if you are not a night timer but do take this into account.
What do I get for it?
A warm, fuzzy feeling, and if we are lucky reddit, inc has some money lying around and send us a box of chocolate (not that this has ever happened). Oh, and it's quite rewarding to help out this pretty awesome place, being the guardian.
I'm interested! How to apply, what are the next steps?
Send a message to the mods at this link with the title "Mod application". Tell us a bit about yourself:
- Which region/time zone do you live in?
- What time of the day are you active in?
- What languages do you speak?
- Do you have any mod experience? (remember, it's no problem if you don't)
- Any cool stuff about you that the mod team should know about?
That's it! As we are all volunteers doing this besides our day jobs and families, we may not be able to quickly make a selection - sorry in advance if that should happen! We'll try to be quick :)
Feel free to reach out through modmail or comment below if you got any questions!

I'm fluent in all of those languages, how much does it pay?

Shits and giggles, plus people will ridicule you openly and behind your back. Worth it imo although I am not sure you should put it on your CV then. /s

Naw man, if I wanted to work for free I'd go to the red cross.

Just to be precise because now I can't tell whether you were joking or not. Mods are volunteers.

Italian being forgotten as an official language even on the Switzerland subreddit.

Nope! We just have requirements for those 2 languages at this time, that's all. We got italian covered already.

Apparently even the mod from Ticino forgets Ticino and that they speak a national language there.Â
(Just a joke. I understand you try to be practical.)

Nah, the fact the 2 comments so far are people coming to the defence of italian is very appreciated. Lol.

How it started:
- It's not about being power-hungry overlords.
How it's going:
- Speak one of the following languages: French or Swiss-German at a native level of proficiency. (standard German doesn't cut it) + English. (any other national language is a plus)

Yeah, sorry. We are looking at replacements and filling specific coverage gaps at this time rather than a wider "universal" recruitment wave.
The next recruitment wave probably won't have such strict requirements.

Why is Standard German not good? I know several people living their whole lives in the German part of Switzerland and they still only speak Standard German, though they understand Swiss German dialects, but can't speak them (or are not comfortable doing so).

Hi, I completely agree that there are many people that only speak standard german, but we have many users writing in swiss-german and modmailing us in swiss-german. So we need people that have no trouble communicating in that language.
If they are unable and are forced to skip that modmail in order to leave it for someone else to handle, that does not fix our coverage which is what we are trying to fix here.

Okay, I see a lot of comments regarding the language requirements.
First of all: I am extremely happy to see everyone coming to the defence of italian, it's really heartwarming even if I am the one actually being grilled.
Just to clarify why the requirements are what they are:
The language requirements are based on what we currently need most in the mod team: we have italian covered since I am fairly active and present.
However we just lost 2 Swiss-german mods and we have gaps for the french language, which tends to stay in the modmail and queue the longest. So currently we are looking at backfilling those 2 mods position and to reinforce our french coverage.
Something not written in the post is that we are recruiting a limited number of people at this time: We are looking for specific coverage and replacements: that's also why night timers are getting preferential treatment as well and standard-german is also not enough.
So this is about replacement, rather than expansion at this time: next time we are doing a wave of recruitments aimed at expanding the team I very much doubt we are going to have such specific requirements.
