I’m running SteamOS (newst Firmware) on a custom-built PC with an ASRock A520M-ITX/ac motherboard and an Xbox Series controller.
The onboard Bluetooth (13d3:3558, Realtek) works, but has extremely poor range (also tried several different antennas), so I switched to a TP-Link UB500 Plus (2357:0604, RTL8761BU). The UB500 has excellent range, but the Xbox controller randomly disconnects and reconnects, especially while gaming.
The logs confirm actual HID disconnects:
Controller device closed after hid_read failure
The controller then gets recreated as a new Bluetooth HID device a few seconds later.
Things I’ve already tested:
- Disabled the onboard Bluetooth completely, so only the UB500 is active.
- Disabled USB autosuspend.
- Removed other 2.4 GHz USB receivers to rule out interference.
- Confirmed the required
rtl8761bu_fw.bin and rtl8761bu_config.bin firmware files are present and loaded correctly.
- Valve/SteamOS firmware
0xdfc6d922 works but still produces random Xbox HID disconnects.
- Currently testing newer firmware
0xddd5c761, extracted from TP-Link’s Windows driver. It loads successfully, but I’m still testing stability.
- Fresh pairing/reboots and different USB configurations have also been tested.
So the main suspect currently seems to be the RTL8761BU firmware/Linux compatibility with Xbox controllers (my other Bluetooth Keyboard), rather than USB range or the controller itself.
Has anyone found a reliable solution for RTL8761BU + Xbox Series controllers on SteamOS/Linux, or can recommend a Bluetooth USB adapter with a different chipset that is known to work reliably?
Swapping the Mainboard isn't a option.. (hopefully).
