SteamOS Update Steamos 3.8.28

Has anyone noticed if there has been an improvement to performance on this update?

Says the Mesa driver got updated but I cannot see any difference on a 9070XT

Also did they do the proper hdmi 2.1 yet as again cannot see any new resolutions or changes

What do you expect mesa updates are more about stability than gains

Well they meantion ray tracing as an example but testing metro exodus I saw 0% improvement. But maybe I’m expecting too much didn’t think it’d be like 10% but even 5% bump I dunno

Coming with Linux Kernel version 7.4, currently Steam OS 3.9 is only at 7.2, need to wait a little longer

It isn’t enabled by default, it will be enabled by default in Linux 7.4 after AMD finished their VRR patches, if you want you can manually enable it on SteamOS right now though.

Edit: To do this on SteamOS, go to desktop mode, and edit the file /etc/default/grub. This will have a line that says GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“”. In the quotes, add “amdgpu.dcfeaturemask=0x400”.
Finally, enter “sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg” in the terminal and reboot.

I can’t find any guides on ‘manually enabling’. Could you bless us with some info?

Stable is still on Steam OS 3.8, Beta channel moved to 3.9 with Kernel 7.2. The full HDMI 2.1 is coming with Kernel 7.4 this version is not yet available unless Valve adds a preview channel.

Raytracing performance improved in a few games.

For my DIY steam machine, the game startup time is shorter in the 3.8.28. It was unreasonable longer before.

That’s the big thing I noticed as well on my diy .. it’s a huge improvement.

I am seeing worse performance and major fluctuations in frametime and fps rather than gains on Z1 extreme handheld legion go s 32gb steam os model ... Very unstable nothing is crashing but nothing is working as smooth as it used to before this update .. anyone else ?

Only did a little test but didn’t notice any difference on metro exodus on the small time session I played

I am getting playable on everything but it's definitely not like the way it was before the update something has messed up ... Star drift evolution was a major shock .. expected 120fps but getting mere 35fps in low power mode at max settings .. star drift evolution its a piss poor graphics high quality indie racer ...
