guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0

Thumbnail old.reddit.com
42 Upvotes

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).

This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.

You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.

Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

League Of Legends on macOS VM = Perma ban

Heads up to anyone temped.

I've seen many posts talk about how Kernel Anti-Cheat doesn't apply to macOS version.
First of, since about a year, this is no longer true (tbf those were 2-3 years old posts).

Vanguard WILL tell you that your GPU does not support Metal Graphics API, and won't let you get in-game.

GPU passthrough on a supported GPU would be the only way. But I didn't have that.

So whilst looking around, I found Reims vGPU, which aims at providing GPU acceleration without passthrough.
That project currently only focuses on macOS Ventura (13), but I managed to get it booting on Monterey (12). Opened the Riot Client and logged in LoL to be greeted to this (picture).

There's a couple additional factors to take into account:
- I had made a new account (I didn't have a Riot account before, because I do not care for their games, was testing alternatives for a friend, glad I got banned before I got their account banned, oops haha)
- Vanguard likely didn't like catching me jump around 2 VMs, and change my GPU twice on a mac. (very suspicious indeed)

---

I guess I'll just tell my friend to keep playing LoL on their low-power Windows Laptop (I built them a pretty decent Linux Gaming system from spare parts), or to find a better MOBA 😄 It was still a fun experience learning about the current state of macOS virtual machines.

What were your reasons to move from Windows to Linux

Hi there!

I'm seriously thinking about moving from Win11 to Linux.

My main reason is mainly due to performances for both work and gaming (As I'm a software engineer)

But the whole of the internet gives me as many reasons to stick to windows as moving to Linux.

Privacy aside (I don't exactly care much about the whole spying stuff or whatever on Win), what made you move and what keeps you on Linux for gaming?

My computer has a 3090Ti and an AMD CPU (Just fyi lol)

Not looking for debate here, just genuinely looking for opinions!

wine/proton Gaming via Steam Arm64, Proton-CachyOS Arm64, on Raspberry Pi 5 eGPU 9060XT

Hey everyone,

I’ve made some more progress on the setup for my overclocked Pi5 connected to an external GPU.

I’ve now put it through some heavier tests, like Steam and the *Wukong* benchmark.

I’m also playing *Onimusha*, even using FSR 4.1.1.

Down the line, I’ll get around to the case mod.

I’ll have to cut into the lid of a Pi Module Box to fit the Ice Tower heatsink, haha.

I made a video discussing the saga of getting the GPU working and the technical aspects regarding the physical PCIe x1 Gen 2.0 bus connection.

I haven't managed to get the Pi5 running on PCIe x1 Gen 3.0 yet, but I’m going to try again with some better-shielded ribbon cables. In the video, I show the details of the "video/data signal" traffic and the transition from PCIe x16 Gen 5.0 down to the limitations of the Pi5 in this current setup.

I make videos (originally in Brazilian Portuguese), but the auto-dubbing quality seems much better these days.

In the videos, I aim to provide technical explanations regarding the challenges of getting it all working.

I'm working on creating more explanatory videos. If you'd like to follow along, the link to the channel is in my profile info.

tech support wanted Enabling FSR 4 in The Witcher 3 Remastered using Proton 11.0-2?

• Upvotes

Greetings!

I'm trying to play The Witcher 3 remastered using FSR4, so far I can do that with the latest Proton CachyOS and GE Proton.

However there's a weird issue when you die and reload the last save it takes a lot to load.

This issue can be fixed by using Proton 11.0-2 as stated here https://www.reddit.com/r/Witcher3/comments/1wt9lg6/comment/pd057yy/?context=3&utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

But now I'm stuck on FSR 3.1 which looks terrible.

Is there a way to use FSR4 on that specific proton version?

Faugus and screen edge scrolling

Let me start by saying I'm new to Linux and just figured out how to run stuff in proton and faugus.

A bug I ran into with 2 games: Icewind Dale and Dark Colony which use mouse screen edge scrolling. Scrolling right and down does not work but up and left does. In IWD I can scroll if I put the cursor like one pixel away from the edge. They are running in CachyOS. Is there a way to check that the cursor is actually captured by the game? and to check if the games are running exclusive fullscreen?

FileNotFoundError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory:

'/home/usuario/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/GE-Proton11-5/files/lib/wine/nvidia-libs/nvapi//x86_64-windows/nvapi64.dll'

cp -r /home/$USER/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/GE-Proton11-5/files/lib/wine/nvapi /home/$USER/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/GE-Proton11-5/files/lib/wine/nvidia-libs/

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dxgi=n,b" PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_NVIDIA_NVCUDA=1 %command%

nvngx_dlss.dll

nvngx_dlssd.dll

nvngx_dlssg.dll

tech support wanted Pls help me fix my Dota 2

• Upvotes

So my office mates on our department play Dota 2 every after working hours and I really wanted to bond with them. I tried playing Dota 2 on this laptop (Lenovo Ideapad) and when I play vs AI, there are no stutters to the game. But whenever I play co-op, or online, I experience micro stutters. I put all graphics on the lowest possible level but still no use.. I am using a Fedora linux and I want to check if some of you here experienced this kind of issue and how'd you resolve it. Hope someone answers 👀 ... thanks!

Made a native Linux Hearthstone tracker so I'd stop running Firestone in Wine

Post image
15 Upvotes

Every HS deck tracker is Windows-only, so on Linux you run it in Wine next to the game. Firestone was using 2-4 GB and getting the game OOM-killed on my laptop.

Cairn is native (Python + Qt), just reads the game's log files, ~170 MB. Deck tracking, opponent's cards and hand, possible secrets, resurrect pools. X11 and Wayland, on the AUR.

A month old and I'm fixing stuff fast, so issues welcome.

tech support wanted At my wits end with this controller. Please help

Running CachyOS. Using a scuf envision pro. Whenever i load into a game, the controller is pretty much completely janked. The buttons are not mapped correctly, and the axis’s spin on their own. This applies to the controller at base level, not just in steam games. Using steam input can work, but steam isn’t all i use a controller for so i’m trying to get it fixed at the base level.

I’m tech savvy, but definitely not linux savvy enough to know how to fix this, so i attempted to use an LLM to help me figure it out, and it had me use XboxDRV.

I guess an update or something broke it because it’s back to exactly the same way it was. it happens in both wireless mode, and wired mode. Is there a way to fix this so it doesn’t break again? I know i’m using cachy and it can sometimes be considered “unstable” due to the rolling releases. But i’m just looking for a way to fix this permanently. Please

tech support wanted Net Jitter in Counter Strike (CS2/CSGO)

I switched to Linux Mint recently and whenever I play specifically CS2, I get a pretty consistent 10 seconds of ~150ms net jitter, 5 seconds of no jitter, then back to jitter. Like clockwork. Has anyone else experienced this and/or know a fix? I am on wireless btw, its a MT7921 802.11ax wifi card inserted into a PCIE slot

Information on the internet is very sparse, this seems to be a rare issue. I thought it was weird for a valve game to have an issue like this. I can play Rivals of Aether II online just fine, for example.

tech support wanted My experiences switching to Fedora and a problem I haven't been able to solve regarding gaming on Fedora

A few weeks ago, I took the plunge and stepped out of my comfort zone to switch to Fedora 44 KDE to get away from the nonsense Windows push on me, and so far I love the way it looks and how the workflow suits me as someone coming straight from Windows. I’ve kept it pretty stock and just followed some guides to configure it, especially when it comes to gaming. My RTX 2060 handles it well and runs all the games I’ve tried with the same performance as on Windows, and some even feel a little faster than before.

There’s one game so far that I haven’t been able to run smoothly, and that’s my beloved The Elder Scrolls Online. It starts up as usual and runs perfectly at first without any problems. But the longer I play, the worse the performance gets—it starts with a little stuttering here and there when I move around the world, and after maybe 30 minutes, it gets so bad that I have to restart the game. If I stop and let it sit idle, the stuttering stops for the most part.

At first, I thought the polling rate on my ASUS mouse was the problem, so I connected it to a Windows device, launched Armoury Crate, and set the profiles to a lower polling rate. That fixed maybe some of the stuttering, but it still became unbearable, and I had to quit the game.

In addition, I’ve tried most of the solutions suggested by the community, such as closing the game launcher after start, disabling overlays, testing different Proton versions, experimenting with vsync and frame rate limiters, and using launch commands like “gamemoderun %command%,” but so far nothing has solved the problem. I also tried another Arch-based distro to see if it was a Fedora issue, but the problem occurred on Arch as well, which is interesting. At one point I also tried running it in a gamescope-session on Bazzite, but that didn't solve the problem either.

I'm just putting this out there if someone had similar problems with gaming on Linux hoping of one last chance before I have to consider remigrating to Windows just so I can enjoy my favorite pastime.

Playstation 5 Emulation on Linux

Hey everyone,

since my newsfeed has recently been exploding with PS5 emulation stuff, I’ve reached the point where I realized that it’s not really emulation, but more of a translation layer similar to Proton. So, I had an idea and I’d love to hear your opinion on whether it would be doable. Specifically, creating a translation layer that you could plug into the Heroic Game Launcher, just like Proton, that would allow us to play PS5 games the same way we play Windows games?

Witcher 3 Remastered: save loads taking 60+ seconds on GE-Proton / Proton Experimental? It's XInput, and there's a fix

If loading a save in the Witcher 3 remaster takes you a minute or more on Linux, this might be why.

My loads were 1:07 by stopwatch, every time, on a 9850X3D with the game on NVMe. So obviously not hardware. After the fix below it's about 19 seconds.

While the loading screen is up, the game polls for a controller (XInputGetState) in a tight loop. In newer Proton builds, Wine's xinput re-scans every HID device each time you poll a slot that has no controller in it. Each scan is a pile of registry lookups, and every one of those is a round trip to wineserver. I measured around 300,000 of them per second on the game's main thread, for about 55 seconds straight. The actual loading only takes a few seconds at the end.

So if you play on keyboard and mouse with no controller plugged in, the game spends most of the load screen looking for a gamepad.

I checked the xinput1_4.dll in the Proton builds I had installed:

  • GE-Proton11-7: rescans on every call
  • Proton Experimental, Proton Hotfix, Proton-CachyOS: same
  • Proton 10.0 (10.0-4b): doesn't, it only rescans in a background thread

Run top during a load. If wineserver is sitting at 40% or so of a core for the whole loading screen and then drops to basically nothing once you're in game, that's it.

Fix

Use Proton 10.0's xinput DLLs for this one game, while staying on whatever Proton you like.

  1. Install "Proton 10.0" from Steam if you don't have it

  2. Copy its two xinput DLLs next to witcher3.exe and patch one string in them. Adjust the paths if your Steam library is somewhere else:

cd ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/"The Witcher 3"/bin/x64_dx12 P10="$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton 10.0/files/lib/wine/x86_64-windows" for f in xinput1_4.dll xinput9_1_0.dll; do cp "$P10/$f" . && chmod u+w "$f" printf 'Proton10 xinput\0' | dd of="$f" bs=1 seek=64 conv=notrunc status=none done

The dd line is needed because Wine's own DLLs have a "Wine builtin DLL" tag in the header. If Wine sees that tag on a DLL in the game folder, it ignores the file and loads its bundled one instead. Overwriting the tag makes it treat the copy like any DLL a game ships with.

  1. Add this to the front of the game's launch options:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xinput1_4,xinput9_1_0=n,b" %command%

If you already have launch options, just put the WINEDLLOVERRIDES part at the start. GE-Proton appends its own overrides to it, so things like OptiScaler and the FSR4 upgrade kept working for me.

To undo it, delete the two xinput DLLs from bin/x64_dx12 and remove the override.

Caveats

  • Only tested on my machine: GE-Proton11-7, Fedora, AMD GPU, no controller connected.
  • I haven't tried a controller with the swapped DLLs. It should still work since it's just the older xinput, but I can't promise.
  • Just running the game on Proton 10.0 should avoid the problem too. I didn't go that way because I wanted to keep the GE stuff.
  • Plugging in a controller might also help, since the rescan only happens for empty slots. Didn't test it.

This probably isn't specific to Witcher 3. Any game that polls XInput constantly with no pad connected could hit the same thing on these Proton versions, it's just very visible here because the game does it during loading. If you've got a game with weirdly long loads or stutter and wineserver is busy the whole time, might be worth a look.

I used several different Proton versions with no luck. Proton-GE/Proton Experimental/Proton CachyOS/Proton WIneland. I've tried to toggle graphics settings, and used several standard launch options. with no luck to fix this. it also refuses to launch via heroic. and a verify and repair finishes in a second because I guess it's not broken? idk :( I am honestly lost and I have tried to fix this myself. if there is any other info needed I can try my best to supply it. but I am not the best with Linux

This is such a strange bug as all my other games work flawlessly. any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

tech support wanted Confusion about integrated vs discrete GPU

Hi all,

I am running Bazzite (KDE) on a Dell Vostro 5510 which has Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics and an nVidia MX450 discrete GPU. I know I can force the nVidia GPU in the BIOS, but I currently have it set to hybrid, and from what I can tell it is using the integrated graphics all the time and is not switching over to the nVidia card during games. I am saying that because Cardwire only wcwe shows the integrated graphics as being active. Cardwire is also set to hybrid. I didn't notice any difference changing it to Smart mode - but I also can't seem to find any processes to add to tell it to switch? In searching around here, I did see something about using the DRI_PRIME=1 flag for launching games, but is that really the best option?

Thanks!

tech support wanted MinecraftXelden ring on linux

Wondering if anyone has also tried to do the viral bridge mod. Im runing throught Catchy os. I actually got it to run way more playable then this video. After splitting gpu power or resources. At around 80% for elden ring and 20% for minecraft. Im not super tech savy when it comes to anything terminal. So disclosure i used gemini pro. Still took hours of back and forth. To re write to use linux Java instead of windows as it says that was the best option. Idk i think it writes a python command to spin it all up after elden ring is runing. My frames are playable after gpu splitting around 40fps with major stutters tho. Also I had to tune down to very low settings in both. And render distance remains pretty bad even after turning chunks up. Ill list my specs out bellow. Just looking for tips if this has been tried yet.

Wireless controller decided to stop working in Forza 6

8bitdo Ultimate 2 on 2.4G setting. Although it also doesn't work on bluetooth, if anyone's curious.

Basically title. It was working fine yesterday, no issue at all. Wanted to play a bit in the morning, no luck. Game just refuses to see it in Dinput, Xinput at all. Steam and the system recognizes the controller just fine. Steam input on/off/default doesn't change anything. The only thing that does is connecting the controller by wire. Same wire and same USB slot that the wifi dongle is connected to.

Fedora 44, GE-Proton 11-7 (latest,but different ones also don't work), 8bitdo Ultimate 2.

NOTHING changed from yesterday. (I even removed my wireless trackball as to make sure it's not conflicting).

Any ideas on how to solve this?

tl;dr: controller worked fine yesterday, doesn't work today. Works by wire, doesn't work when wireless, even though system and steam both see it.

tech support wanted Cant run Portal on Arch Linux

Recently bought portal 1 and 2 from the sale (4€ total, thats a steal) but i cant get Portal 1 to run. I have tried every single option on the compatibility list, some dont launch and a few of them do launch into the main menu (Like steam linux runtime 1.0) but when i press new game and start new game, i hear 1 microsecond of the portal radio and then it crashes.

Do i need any extra software because its an older game or something? What could be the issue?

I use arch + KDE btw.

Edit: u/Nyxem64 posted this link https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues/7278#issuecomment-3229785583 which is the exact same issue im having
