PTR / Beta New layering system in action

The area within roughly 60 yards of the great lift was split into about four micro-layers. You’d phase in and out of them every couple of yards, for example we were able to abuse it to avoid getting killed.

Discussion Draenei in WoW Forever - Lore and expectations

Post image
316 Upvotes

Currently, in Retail WoW, the story of the Draenei is of a people, that had to flee their home planets twice. Sargeras, Lord of the Burning Legion, offered the leaders of the Eredar on Argus, as they were called back then, immense powers for their servitude. Archimonde and Kil'jaeden accepted, but Velen, with the help of the Ata'mal crystal, foresaw the grave destiny of his people, and fled the planet with only a part of the Eredar, only to end up on Draenor, homeplanet of the orcs.

Now, that was a retcon back in tbc, as before then, the Eredar were already stated to be demons already, and their evildoings caused Sargeras to turn mad in the first place. Metzen, who simply forgot about that fact, apologized for that in a following blizzcon.

Considering all this, this leaves a lot of potential and opportunities for the draenei in forever, whether as a playable race or a not.

If they stick to what was established prior to tbc, they could use them as an antagonistic force for some future update, or make new lore, which could go in many directions. For example, they could go the tbc route too, just without Sargeras being involved in their exile. A greater involvement of the broken and lost would also be something to consider.

There's also the option of draenei not being included in the game for a long time, if at all. I agree, that out of all the races currently playable in any version of the game, they feel the most foreign, which can hamper immersion for some. I recognize that, yet I would feel that, as their lore has become deeply intertwined with orcs, leaving them out completely would feel a bit hollow.

I've seen ideas floating around of a group of draenei or broken ones to have fled to Azeroth, while the dark portal was open, and use that to establish them on EK. I like that idea.

Just - leave out the spaceships. That's all im asking.

What are your thoughts on the draenei in forever?

Discussion The Dungeon XP changes brings out the worst in people.

2.1k Upvotes

People are saying that the changes makes the dungeon feel like retail, but honestly its even worse.

In m+ atleast has count, so you dont skip every single mob thats not part of a quest and you get rewards at the end of the dungeon.

I have just been part of an absolute demon run and I fear it will only get worse:

I tanked BFD as a Horde Player and when I joined the group asked that we skip as many mobs as possible.(which was fine by me)

But once Inside it turned out with "mobs" they meant anything that was not part of a quest. They got mad when I tried to get the naga boss in the cave and also did not want to pull the murloc boss because "its too much trash and the loot is not worth it"

They then wanted to skip the bridge with the twilight hammers
(we ended up pulling half the bridge and wiping)

And to top it off a dps left after the 2nd to last boss, because the final boss has no quest on horde and had no loot for him...

I hope this was just an exceptionally bad outlier, but I fear it will only get worse.

BFD is a really small dungeon, what are people going to be like in BRD? Will they just quit left and right once they got their quests?

Is anybody even going to run SM GY, since it has no quests?

I was really excited for Forever, but the way theses changes are playing out is really frustrating as a tank player. I will prob just solo quest to 60 if this doesnt change.

Discussion Forever isn't fully realmless. There are hidden server halves, and it does have an impact

Ran into this while working on a profession addon and figured it's good for people to be aware because it could affect gameplay in other ways.

Each realm on Forever is actually split into two hidden servers behind the same name. On the PvP ruleset they show up internally as ClassicBetaPvP and ClassicBetaPvP2. You normally can't tell, because names, whispers, guilds and groups all work across them like it's one realm.

But not everything does. What I've confirmed so far:

  • Profession links from someone on the other half aren't clickable. You can't open their recipe book at all, so roughly half the population can't see the other half's professions. In fact, if they link it in /say for instance, you might not even see it.
  • Custom chat channels are split. If you and a friend join the same custom channel but are on different halves, you won't see each other in it.

Whispers, guild chat and party chat work fine across the split.

If you want to check which half someone is on, target them and type:
/run print(UnitGUID("target"))
The number after "Player-" is the server. If yours and theirs differ, you're on different halves.

I've reported it as a bug in game. Posting here mostly so people are aware, since if professions and channels are affected, there could be other things that quietly don't work across the split too. If you've noticed anything weird like this, it'd be good to collect it here.

Addons, Apps and Websites GnomeLevelUp - A fancy new immersive level-up screen inspired by older RPGs.

1.3k Upvotes

Hey all, I just got done working on the release version of my first ever addon. A week or so ago a few people were talking about really wanting this to be a feature and that gave me the kick to finally give making one a try.

Features:

  • Stat gains: Shows your old and new values for stats that increased.
  • Trainer abilities: Displays unlearned abilities as spell icons with tooltips.
  • Weapon skills: Lists unlearned Forever weapon proficiencies on a separate, smaller line. Can be disabled in the options.
  • Customizable appearance: Change fonts, text colours, background opacity, scale, portrait style, and animation speed. Drag the popup to reposition it.
  • Sound options: Choose a built-in sound or use your own sound file.

Visit your class trainer once so the addon can save its ability list. Weapon skills use a built-in list and do not require a trainer visit.

You can check it out on CurseForge here, still in the process of adding it to other websites :3 I'd really love to get feedback on it!

https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/gnomelevelup

AI Usage Disclaimer:

I am still very new to LUA and used AI as a training tool and to help me debug and to suggest ways to build certain functions, AI was primarily initially used to help me write and understand the functions that allow for spell book caching.

Any area of code in which AI was used I made sure to try and learn what the AI was doing and why, then quizzed myself on the functions later. A lot of it's suggestions were outright thrown out as I tried to find my own way.
I've no desire to be sneaky about this, as it stands the addon is about 80/20 my code/AI code. My goal isn't to just throw out vibe coded slop, just to get a cool addon out that was above my level of understanding at the start while learning along the way. I hope to get to a point where I do not need to fall back on it in the future

Edit:

Kind of overwhelmed with the response this has gotten so far, I thought I'd maybe get a couple downloads but we're already almost up to 400. I really appreciate all the feedback you guys have given so far. I'm going to be pushing a new update tonight that includes some of the commonly requested features/fixes a few bugs:

  • Added optional trainer skill costs
  • Added an option to show only skills that unlock at the player's current level.
  • Added trainer-cache migration so 1.1 data is rescanned for skill costs after updating. Should be future proof if I need to change the database again.
  • Added an option to show time played upon level-up.
  • Added a first-boot setup reminder.
  • Set the default level-up frame strata to High to fix the tooltips drawing under the level-up panel.
  • Fixed level-up sound suppression so the level-up sound does not play twice when using the default Blizzard level-up sound.

Edit 2:

One last update being pushed for the day!

  • Added optional LibSharedMedia support for fonts and sounds.
  • Added a toggle to hide the level-up panel's text glow.
  • Added an option to close the level-up panel with a right-click.
  • Improved custom sound registration and menu handling including better instructions on how to use a custom sound.
  • Added a temporary controller-mode workaround for WoW: Forever's gamepad UI.

Should hopefully be live on Curse soon! One final note, the trainer scanning is just a necessity of the beta. Once the full game releases and it's less likely for skills to change I can push a complete list of all skills and remove that requirement.

Discussion Controversial suggestion: Killing low level players should be counted as dishonorable kills

I know it is a very unpopular opinion to introduce mechanics to discourage high levels from ganking low lvls.

With some caveats like if the low level player attacks you first. Some people might even enjoy the RP aspect of playing a low-honor rogue who is a murder-hobo.

An other alternative which is also unpopular is that I don’t think low level players should have the hit penalty/damage reduction they currently have if they try to defend against a high level player. Obviously a lvl 60 player would still wipe the floor with a lvl 40 even without the miss/hit being skewed in their favour. As a rule of thumb, I think a group of 5 lvl 40s should have a chance at killing a lvl 60 player.

Anyway, 4 dollars a pound

Discussion Blizzard should push back the raid release

As see above. December 9th, only 1 month after release feels very tough for releasing 3 raids.

The most reason why people are pushing for turbo efficiency is that they have fomo.

I spoke with a few dudes and they have the same opinion. They love raiding, they want to raid in December and that is their goal.

However, a game that is advertising the journey etc. is putting a lot of pressure on people who love raiding and don’t wanna miss the first ID.

I think pushing the raids to early January should give more people the possibility to get 60 and start a bit farming gear and do professions while not having the feeling to rush it.

Discussion Auberdine is easily the best hearth location and here’s why.

• Upvotes

So most people pick a major city like Stormwind or Ironforge and while respectable, let me present you with another… better option.

Auberdine has 3 docks for starters, like stormwind, however they are a quicker walk from your hearth spot. The ships take you to both stormwind and the wetlands, allowing easy transport to north and south parts of the continent.

It also has a flight point so, if you need to get to the barrens or ashenvale for BFD? You can fly and best part, it’s alliance territory, no more Booty Bay ganks on the ship!

Auberdine is also basically a suburb of Darnassas, which gets you to an AH and bank quickly if that’s your concern.

Best part? There are basically zero gnomes!

Auberdine is easily the most useful location because it is so centralized to anywhere you need to go.

Addons, Apps and Websites I made this little addon because quest text was too small to read for me

Hi guys! I usually play WoW on a 4k screen and the text size is way too small for my eyes to read. I've been skipping reading quest texts for a long time, and damnit, I've decided this time I will get immersed into the world of Azeroth!

So.. I made a lightweight addon, called Parchmint, that scales the text size up with intuitive button presses like Ctrl + scroll wheel. This doesn't affect any other UI in the game, unlike the accessibility settings. And it works on the quest selection/gossip window and the quest window itself.

Give it a try and lmk what you think and if I should add any other feature!

Discussion Genuine question: what do folks have against dungeon leveling?

• Upvotes

The dungeon XP nerfs are a contentious issue, and something that has surprised me in reading the discourse is how many people are vehemently opposed to the dungeon-forward play-style.

To be frank: dungeons are by far my favorite thing in WoW. I always main a tank. I love the challenge of dungeons. I love that dungeons are a social activity (especially harder ones).

I love building a rolodex of choice healers and DPS to call on when I want to run one. I love the thrill of loot drops and getting an upgrade/seeing others get upgrades.

I do still quest, particularly when I am at a level range for zones I actually enjoy. But I’d say 60% of my XP while leveling in WoW was from dungeons.

So my question is: why does it seem that there are folks who are very strongly opposed to this? It does not bother me that some players prefer a questing playstyle.

What about a dungeoneer’s play experience infringes so severely upon a quester’s play experience that they are so opposed to see dungeon XP bumped up again?

(Assume that boosting is a non-issue in this instance. Currently having any party member for whom a mob is grey result in 0 XP gain for the party, so it’s not a problem even if XP were at normal rates).

PTR / Beta Sheathed Shield Change in new Beta build

Post image
560 Upvotes

I noticed the sheathed shield position has changed in the most recent beta build. In the previous beta build where the lvl cap was level 20, the shields used to anchor higher up, closer to the shoulders like in Retail. Now shields anchor closer to the center of the character’s back like in Classic. I think the version where the shield is higher up like in Retail looks a lot better. It seems this change is most exaggerated on Dwarves and may be barely noticeable on other races like Humans.

If this change is intended, perhaps we could include a toggle between the two versions? Similar to how weapons can now be anchored either on the hip or the back?

I've already submitted a bug report just in case this change was not intended. I noticed Night Elves have started to have a weird issue with shields too so I wonder if this is related.

Edit: Alternate picture with better lighting now that the sun is up: https://imgur.com/a/UTdJ1tm

Discussion Dungeon XP changes feel like an overcorrection

I understand why Blizzard nerfed dungeon quest XP. The original rewards were extremely high, and stacking quests while hopping from dungeon to dungeon shouldn't completely replace leveling in the open world.

The problem is dungeon mob XP was already heavily reduced. With both changes together, dungeons are becoming something you run once with quests and then have little reason to return to unless you're farming a specific item. We're already seeing groups skip trash and optional bosses because killing anything that isn't required simply isn't worth the time.

There are positives to the changes. The open world should matter, boosting shouldn't be the best way to level, and dungeon spam shouldn't dominate efficient leveling. But the current system creates its own problems. Tanks and healers have less incentive to level through dungeons, repeat runs become less attractive, and pushing more players into the world increases competition for already crowded quest mobs.

I think there's a reasonable middle ground: keep dungeon quest XP where it is, restore reasonable XP to level-appropriate dungeon mobs, and specifically penalize groups being boosted by significantly higher-level players.

Questing can still be the most efficient way to level without making dungeons feel unrewarding after the first run.

Forever is adding a lot of great new dungeon content. The incentive shouldn't become "stack the quests, run it once, skip everything you can, and never come back."

Discussion Battlegrounds: Let us queue in the open world... please...

** To those who are literally posting "NO" - not really helpful is it, elaborate please.

This is probably the only thing in the game that I have strong feelings towards as unfortunately it's a make or break change for me. I can't be the only one and I fail to see any negative impact on the game itself.

I want wow forever to capture the largest audience possible without taking away the classic wow feeling. The alternative - sitting in front of the capital city battlemaster - is such an outdated anti-fun mechanism.

Especially seeing as they have made such incredible improvements to the graphics engine and open world immersion.

** Nobody is walking to the respective queue masters in the open world. Be real.

  • The world actually feels more alive: Instead of players idling around a battlemaster in a capital city, they are out in the world's zones. They are farming, questing, or at least actively interacting with the environment.
  • Real world time constraints: The old mechanism forces you to choose between doing a battleground or essentially doing anything else. Time constraints are real for the player base (or at least me, a dad with a wife), and a lot of us simply do not want to have to make these choices anymore.
  • Healthier queue populations: Removing the forced choice makes the queue much more attractive to a larger, more casual player base.
  • Enhances world immersion: It doesn't hurt immersion at all. Surely seeing geared players out in the wild farming and interacting with the world only adds to a fuller, more active environment?

Please, Blizzard. Don't force us back into the city idling meta. Let us queue from the open world in forever...

Discussion LATAM/SA servers

Thumbnail us.forums.blizzard.com
54 Upvotes

I’ll try to share this post with as many spanish/portuguese speaking players I know, maybe Blizzard hears us this time. Please if you are a LATAM player reading this, do the same. Post about this issue on the blizzard forum.

Currently, there are no LATAM/SA servers.

This debt to LATAM players has not been answered. All new online games offer LATAM based servers, it’s very strange that Blizzard being as huge as it is does not offer the same service. We love the game and we just want to play with a reasonable ping. At best we are currently playing with 160ms, which is not okay. For spanish speakers, Retail only offers language-based servers, but they are still hosted on US East.

Discussion Prediction: they will rework AV.

Alterac valley has been a silly place for a while in classic. Far from the original intent of a grand battle, having become a strange "RUSH B" simulator, with a generally lopsided balance.

I'll predict that they will build in limits that will transform the map more into a slow grind while putting mechanisms in place that prevent protracted stalemates.

Thoughts?

Art and Media Kobolds should be the “HD Setting” Art Standard for WoW Forever

Thumbnail

Blizzard has shown that their art team can make faithful updates to classic models while retaining the unique classic art style when they want to and if they use the Kobold remaster from modern WoW pictured above (NOT the newer kobolds from the recent expac) as their standard for this, they can have a true “HD setting” without making the NPCs/player characters/items look out of place in the classic world.
