He may only be able to throw one game if they need multiple outs .→ More replies (2)→ More replies (5)280

I totally get wanting to stick with the most dominant closer in the game
But the hitters were just not biting on the slider like they usually do. He walks the bases loaded. He can’t locate the fastball up. The only pitch he can consistently land for strikes is an extremely diminished slider. His velo is all over the place as he tries to find his control. He’s thrown more pitches than he ever has in his career. The guy who strikes everyone out got his outs on a groundout and pop fly that Vaughn just missed…
Every single sign that a pitcher is drowning was there. The best thing he had going for him was that he kept the Brewers from doing damage for enough time for another reliever to get up, and there was no one throwing. After the second walk, I cannot fathom why you don’t have another guy throwing just in case

WHY DID THEY LET MILLER THROW 40 PITCHES?
306
u/TuriGuiliano370 San Diego Padres 4h ago
He steamrolled through the 8th inning with like 10. No problem, throwing them out there again for the ninth, but they need to have someone warming in the pen as soon as he starts walking dudes.
57
u/RickySuela 4h ago
Yep. SD has a number of other top quality relief pitchers they could have gone to. They should have had someone warming to start the 9th just in case Miller got into trouble. His control definitely was not the same in the 9th as it was in the 8th.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)31
u/Apocalympdick MLB Pride • Rome Emperors 4h ago
They needed to have someone warming regardless of what was happening. He has a single 6 out save in his career, it's uncharted territory, and they can't even be bothered to throw him a lifeline.
61
u/Epochalyptic Chicago White Sox 4h ago
Morejon got completely rocked yesterday by the Brewers, the box score doesn't reflect how badly they were teeing off on him with hard contact after hard contact.
It was going to be Miller for 6 outs, Adam in the 8th, or one of their noticeably worse arms. Knowing that, it's understandable.
