6 outs of Miller was greed

Walking the bases loaded is literally a flashing red sign to get the guy the hell out

u/bigbluethunder 5h ago

Definitely sunk cost. They might’ve burned him for the next game too. And they gave a lot of people an at bat against him, too - let them see his pitches.

u/treeeezzzzy Milwaukee Brewers 5h ago

40 pitches tonight is a lot of pitches for a closer. . With a short series, games on Tuesday , Wednesday, Friday.
He may only be able to throw one game if they need multiple outs .

u/CrashUser 2h ago

He gets two days rest here, I'd bet he's available for at least two of the three.

That’s assuming the Padres survive to see game 5…

7

u/SeaPeanut7_ 5h ago

It’s okay he’s not some secret pitcher lol

Watching video and stepping in on a guy are two very different things.

Especially when the Padres have a bunch of other quality RPs.

Adrian Morejon in the bullpen

u/goongas 4h ago

Morejon threw 31 pitches over 2 innings yesterday and gave up 3 hits, including the game winning HR. He wasn't going to pitch in this game.

18

u/TJFLASH1 St. Louis Cardinals 3h ago

It’s hilarious the same people talking about Miller being burned for the entire rest of the series apparently think Morejon should’ve pitched today

u/JeffafaCree Milwaukee Brewers 5h ago

Saving him for the 10th

6

u/xProcess Philadelphia Phillies 5h ago

That Gary AB was pretty ugly too.

7

u/purine Milwaukee Brewers 3h ago

One man's trash - that AB was poetry in motion to me.

2

u/MexicanPikachu San Diego Padres 5h ago

Yeah, that is purely on stammen, but it’s to be expected from him

1

u/packfanmoore Milwaukee Brewers 3h ago

Yeah, walking 3 guys in an inning isn't great I hear

0

u/Maugrin Seattle Mariners 3h ago

And yet he was a strike away from getting the save. We can't judge in hindsight, clearly sticking by your best reliever in the biggest moments was a justifiable call given he got you as close as you can in a loss.

Getting out of a bases loaded jam is best done through strikeouts, and Miller is by far the best strikeout pitcher on the team.

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 5h ago

I totally get wanting to stick with the most dominant closer in the game

But the hitters were just not biting on the slider like they usually do. He walks the bases loaded. He can’t locate the fastball up. The only pitch he can consistently land for strikes is an extremely diminished slider. His velo is all over the place as he tries to find his control. He’s thrown more pitches than he ever has in his career. The guy who strikes everyone out got his outs on a groundout and pop fly that Vaughn just missed…

Every single sign that a pitcher is drowning was there. The best thing he had going for him was that he kept the Brewers from doing damage for enough time for another reliever to get up, and there was no one throwing. After the second walk, I cannot fathom why you don’t have another guy throwing just in case

u/Stangstag Toronto Blue Jays 4h ago

“He’s our guy”

Fkn hate when managers give the closer way too much rope to hang themselves with. Use your eyes once in a while and see the dude is struggling.

8

u/s1n0d3utscht3k San Diego Padres 3h ago

relatively struggling for Miller

but he also made it to two outs and two strikes in the 9th

I’m not saying it was the best move to make, but if you’re one pitch away from getting the save then at least there was a pretty decent argument for it

u/cabose7 New York Yankees 5h ago

He threw 104 to get the K and Chourio fought it off to get a somehow manageable 101, you just gotta tip your hat there.

155

u/0pyrophosphate0 Milwaukee Brewers 5h ago

He smelled his bat after the 104, that's his powerup move.

4

u/anb1975 Milwaukee Brewers 3h ago

Imagine playing semi pro baseball in Canada & that dude shows up.

50

u/ChrisIsShortAF Chicago Cubs 5h ago

Fair, but it was clear he was laboring hard in the 9th. Them sliders were borderline cement mixers. Reminded me of Chapman in 2016 being overworked

7

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 5h ago edited 5h ago

That’s the problem though. His velo was all over the place and he couldn’t locate the fastball up. You can’t throw a slower version of the same pitch that the hitter was late on closer to the middle of the plate and not expect them to hit it

5

u/TCup20 Chicago Cubs 5h ago

If his velo is swinging like that from pitch to pitch that's a clear and obvious sign he should've been pulled long ago. His slider was already cooked, so he's down to really only throwing fastballs and delivering them at various speeds that aren't his best.

96

u/someone2795 Los Angeles Dodgers • World Baseball Classic 5h ago

They should've pulled him when his command went away.

34

u/stuckontwice Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

after he walked 2 straight he should have been pulled.

The unstoppable Padres bullpen needed 6 outs fron Miller? Curious indeed.

9

u/Apocalympdick MLB Pride • Rome Emperors 5h ago

During yesterday's broadcast they used the term "best bullpen in baseball". I was very excited to see what that looked like beyond Miller and Morejon. Turns out it doesn't look like anything.

20

u/allonbacuth Milwaukee Brewers • Green Bay Rockers 5h ago

There isn't a team in the MLB that wouldn't be ecstatic to have Matsui or Rodriguez coming out of their pen

5

u/DrSpray San Diego Padres 5h ago

Just because of this comment, I hope if we can't come back, you guys smash the Dodgers.

6

u/MilwaukeeMan420 3h ago

He's not wrong either. The Padres bullpen is fucking nasty and King was dealing too. Padres are more than a formidable opponent. My heart was red lining for 3 hours straight. It's a shame we faced off this series, because they are by far the most likeable of the 3 other NL teams.

2

u/anb1975 Milwaukee Brewers 3h ago

Disagree. It's been really good with the exception of Miller & Morejon

3

u/dogcrayon Houston Astros 5h ago

the deadliest sin

9

u/wichee Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

i disagree. miller is the best rp, you have to tough it out in the postseason and they didnt even use him yesterday

27

u/RealPutin Colorado Rockies 5h ago edited 5h ago

Plus it's a travel day now headed back to San Diego. At some point you gotta use your best pitchers

I'm kinda of the same opinion, obviously it didn't work out but I understand trying to get 6 outs with him. Not pulling him when his command was dying in the 9th is to me the more questionable choice

6

u/ChadInNameOnly Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

Agreed. Putting him in in the 8th wasn't a bad call. Leaving him in there to die when he walked the bases loaded was.

8

u/CalebosO4 Toronto Blue Jays 5h ago

Yeah, go with your best, and if they beat you, they beat you. At least it wasn’t their number 9 hitter who beat them, because imagine letting that happen.

8

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 5h ago

But when your best is clearly drowning in a situation he’s never been in before, you should have a backup plan

I cannot understand why no one was throwing after the second walk

2

u/MilwaukeeMan420 3h ago

Stammen has to answer for that and he probably just said "we believe in our guy" or something

4

u/cpeak57 5h ago

Throwing a career high in pitches while walking the bases loaded? Come on dude

6

u/Naive-Elephant-9305 5h ago

It was the most pitches he had thrown in a game all season. Asking guys to do things in the postseason that they didn't do all regular season is a dangerous thing.

2

u/BowlingforDrip Chicago Cubs 5h ago

I don’t think he had A 2 inning save all year.

1

u/kw_lauren Toronto Blue Jays 5h ago

I think I saw he had 6

2

u/BowlingforDrip Chicago Cubs 5h ago

Just went thru the year. He had two 2 inning outings and got wins. No save.

2

u/kw_lauren Toronto Blue Jays 5h ago

Whoops, you're right, sorry. I went back through my stream and it says 1 career 6-out save. Apparently I only remembered the 6.

1

u/BowlingforDrip Chicago Cubs 5h ago

No stress! Wild that he has about 8 2 inning outings and only one save. Teams should know those numbers

1

u/MilwaukeeMan420 3h ago

Someone in the Brewers thread said our best chance to win is if they let Miller pitch all of the 9th. This was after he shut us down effortlessly in the 8th. I thought the guy was full of shit, but he was on to something.

1

u/s1n0d3utscht3k San Diego Padres 3h ago

if I remember right, ESPN said his last one was in 2023

2

u/MrDL104 San Diego Padres 5h ago

If only we had SEVERAL OTHER ELITE RELIEVERS.

God damnit I’m so angry right now.

2

u/96919 San Diego Padres 4h ago

They left him in for 40 pitches after he already walked the bases loaded, like wtf is wrong with our manager. He never threw more than 35 all year and he was clearly struggling.

2

u/Swazi Seattle Mariners 3h ago

Stammen is an awful manager, TBH. Thought it was a horrible hire from the get go

3

u/Malourbas San Diego Padres 5h ago

Nah. You can’t be a professional pitcher and give three walks to the bottom of the order. There’s no defending that.

3

u/TJFLASH1 St. Louis Cardinals 5h ago

If you can’t count on the best reliever in baseball to go 2 innings then he isn’t the best reliever in baseball

1

u/MilwaukeeMan420 3h ago

1

u/Mitscape Milwaukee Brewers 3h ago

1

u/Echo127 Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago

Not nearly as greedy as the way you punks used Aroldis Chapman in your World Series 😅

1

u/TeamVorpalSwords San Diego Padres 1h ago

Absolutely. It’s especially egregious because have have other elite arms that could have gone in after miller got 4 outs and walked two

1

u/RickySuela 5h ago

He definitely didn't have the control in the 9th inning. Should have brought in Morejon or Adam there.
