WHAT A FINISH

Just like 2024 Clase

No matter how good a reliever is in the regular season, there's always a chance they'll be vulnerable in the postseason

u/Vimmortality Toronto Blue Jays 5h ago

Chourio fouling off that 104mph fastball on the corner to stay alive then walk it off. What a finish indeed.

58

u/Blechhotsauce Seattle Mariners 5h ago

Fouls off 104 and then lays off the slider falling out of the zone on the next pitch. Sicko.

12

u/SocksandSmocks Milwaukee Brewers 5h ago

That slider was so nasty too, unreal take

u/Zhdrix Minnesota Twins 4h ago

I swear baseball pros experience the world slower than everyone else

5

u/Vimmortality Toronto Blue Jays 4h ago

Superstar stuff.

You know you describe that and I think, well it must have started lower than he believes a fastball would, and no, went back and looked at it and it started basically middle middle. Insane take.

5

u/Baseball_fan812 Cincinnati Reds 5h ago

Bingo. That's a well-earned hit.

55

u/RickySuela 5h ago

Especially when you push them that far with a 6 out save

u/FeelsGoodMan2 Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

I think there's somethin to be said that managers nowadays never really test their arms and then just throw em out there in the biggest games and say "Hey so go throw twice as much as we've asked you to ever throw for us".

u/ajayisfour 5h ago

There's a reason Phil Jackson sometimes didn't call timeouts during the regular season

5

u/see_mohn regretful mets fan 5h ago

Not that you can really plan all that much for it, but teams with reasonable expectations of contention should plan a two inning outing for their top reliever or two in, like, July around the break to test the waters.

1

u/MilwaukeeMan420 3h ago

Yeah, it's more surprising that they really didn't do that. I guess I can say I am jaded having Hader all those years, but how do you not give the guy an opportunity and then expect it in the biggest game of his life?

u/CDFReditum Anaheim Angels 4h ago

This is why the dodgers randomly tank games so they can be like uhhh fuck it can you pitch in these situations and get out of jams who cares if we win

u/YourBarelyWetSock Boston Red Sox 5h ago

So weird how teams insist on using closers for 2 innings in the postseason when it seems to always fuck them over. Especially dudes who don't normally go 2 innings.

3

u/FeelsGoodMan2 Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

For real though, closers basically spend the entirety of their season having their outings be "I am going to gas these pitches for 3 outs and my day is over", they never once have to sit on the bench and wait for their team to bat. I know they simulate getting up and down in the bullpen, but I imagine that having to cool your arm down and then go out again isn't just something you magically do perfectly if you never get the practice with it.

u/MilwaukeeMan420 3h ago

And the environment was like nothing he'd ever pitched in before. That place was going nuts

2

u/Silverjackal_ Texas Rangers 5h ago

Yeah I think our closer this year had some, probably lead the majors, and found it interesting because no other team has their closer do that anymore.

1

u/lolwatokay Texas Rangers 5h ago

Course for us it was out of necessity as well. Of that bullpen, Latz was the only one I’d trust with a late lead this year

2

u/Total_Corgi_8428 5h ago

Then there’s the whitesox. Going 4 innings instead of two like absolute chads

u/RhombusOfTerror636 Cleveland Guardians 5h ago

Well uh there was a reason Clase wasn't good

47

u/RealPutin Colorado Rockies 5h ago

I agree, we should suspend Mason Miller for next season just to be safe

2

u/Monk_Philosophy Los Angeles Dodgers • Athletics 5h ago

That’s so harsh. Just send him back to the A’s

3

u/st1r Los Angeles Dodgers • Boston Red Sox 5h ago

I bet you’ll never guess why

2

u/doublegoldendragon Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

Sorry, is there evidence that he actually intentionally threw some of the postseason games where he blew a save?

I don't remember seeing that. I just thought he had a bunch of one-pitch ball/strike calls, but I didn't think he actually tanked performances, especially in the playoffs

2

u/Coffees4closers Cleveland Guardians 4h ago

No there’s not, but fans are understandably skeptical of any anomalies when it comes to Clase

Judge and Stanton were better, yes

8

u/astrothemorkie Houston Astros 5h ago

Makes me even more grateful for 2022 Ryan Pressly

3

u/WhoDatBrow Houston Astros 5h ago

Our entire 2022 team had literally (yes, LITERALLY) the best postseason in MLB history for a bullpen. It was pretty insane.

4

u/California_Stop_King Cleveland Guardians 5h ago

Thanks for the reminder

On the rates and barrells podacast before the postseason starte they showed a graph of the IVB on his fastball April through Sept and you could draw a line through the trend sloping down.

He's probably just a little bit overworked right now.

5

u/55555_55555 New York Yankees 5h ago

I've watched Mariano Rivera blow two series ending and potential title winning saves and seen multiple seasons end with Chapman on the bump. No reliever is safe from the playoffs. It's just different.

1

u/MilwaukeeMan420 3h ago

They mentioned it in the broadcast, but if a reliever comes in and can't throw strikes it leads to nightmare scenarios. Still shocked they didn't have anyone warm up. The 2nd walk was pretty obvious he was laboring up there

2

u/TCup20 Chicago Cubs 5h ago

Most closers are vulnerable after being visibly gassed after 30+ pitches. The fact they let Miller go as long as they did is idiotic.

1

u/Ok-Proof6545 Cleveland Guardians 5h ago

Could this mean Mason Miller is also gambling against his team? We may never know

1

u/No32 Cleveland Guardians 5h ago

y u do dis ;~;

1

u/liteshadow4 San Francisco Giants 5h ago

This is why you have to send them to the WBC
