Discussion Why did Capcom pad Wots so much? The boss fights are perfect

Been an Onimusha fan since the 1st one, so I was thrilled to see the series coming back.

While I am sad the atmosphere and vibe of the og trilogy is totally gone, I am still loving the swordplay, just really surprised how unanimous the 10/10s are.

I love the boss fights, an at Mount Oe section so I assume 2/3 through the game, but man everything between is "go here sever this demon thread" or "go seal this demon rift" over and over.

I just don't get why capcom felt the need to pad the game out so much, a really tight 9-10 hr game would be perfect, cut Kyoto hub almost entirely and the majority of rift sealing fluff and it shaves probably 5-6+ hours.

As of right now it's a 7/10 for me carried almost entirely by the sick ass swordplay/boss fights.

Also really don't love how AAA vibey the game is, RE games don't feel this hand holdy (yes yellow paint is all over those though) but the gauntlet yapping all the time is annoying lol.

Discussion I tried Sekiro after Onimusha WOTS [Initial impressions]

I finished WOTS on carnage recently and saw Sekiro on sale so I bought it since a lot of people also recommend it. For context the only souls game I played is Elden Ring. This is just my initial impressions so far (I've only beaten Genichiro so far) so go easy on me.

TLDR: I find WOTS combat gameplay more fun than Sekiro (arguably due to it being the easier less frustrating game)

On combat both have the Samurai combat gameplay. Sekiro have dodge/deflect/skills/prosthetics/tools while WOTS have one-handed/two-handed/dodge/deflect/parry/issen/skills/tools.

Immediately on the very first enemy engagement on Sekiro I went "Damn this attack string is so slow" and the impression of "This is the more realistic swordplay" due to it having a slower, double-handed strike patterns which is usually done in real sword play. However I am not a fan of slow attacks and I like WOT's AA pattern more since you can do one-handed (fast) -> two-handed(slow) AA combos. Couple this with fights usually only having 1 - 2 AA -> deflect patterns compared to the more lenient DPS windows in WOTS it really enables you to live the fantasy of being a powerful swordsman (albeit unrealistic). This is probably intended since WOTS is arguably easier than Sekiro hence more lenient DPS windows and less aggressive enemies.

The cinematic animations during combat which reminds me of the fallout VATS slow-mo which was one of the things that made it so satisfying to play as well as watch. Couple this with the lenient windows and options you can do with each enemy attack (deflect/parry/dodge/Issen) when you're in a dance with the enemy it further makes you go "Holy shit that was cool". This is also in Sekiro as you can be locked in a dance with the opponent and do Mikiri Counters here and there, but without the cinematic animations it just makes WOTS more satisfying to play.

On sounds I feel WOTS has a more crispier sound effects and better sound design (maybe a bit unfair to compare for a 2026 to a 2019 game). You hear when an opponent unsheathes their sword, the sliding of the blade when you parry, the classic deflect sound and most of all Musashi's antiques when he does some moves. When you're dancing in Sekiro mostly you'll hear is the "kaching" deflect sound which in a longer dance it dulls the enjoyment of the fight and makes it tedious than fun. This is similar in WOTS where you just spam parry/deflect -> 1 to 2 autos in Carnage with a level 1 sword. Its gets a bit boring due to lack of variation.

Difficulty wise its a no brainer WOTS is 100x easier than Sekiro. Normal mobs alone need you to focus and not just blindly spam AA or deflect. On bosses, once you learn to dance it becomes an enjoyable experience but some bosses with 3 lives and 3 different patters makes it so tedious to do similar to Yoshitsune where you need to adjust to phase 2 once you get to phase 1. WOTS also have a distinct sequence where a boss does his move then you do yours while in Sekiro this is varies in every boss in every fight and you need to figure out this yourself. One thing I do enjoy in Sekiro tho is it rewards you for being aggressive which is one of the things I like about it (Denying Lady B-fly her spirit summon and Genichiro his lighting by being perma aggro felt so good). You deny the boss attacks by attacking and deflecting in a rhythm and figuring that rhythm is imo the fun part of the game. In WOTS the fun part lies in experimenting what attacks combos look cool, not necessary which is more effective,"Can I Issen that?". Playing around with Yoshitsune/Ganryuu to project being the better swordsman is just so satisfying. The thing that WOTS edges out is the risk/reward. With WOTS being the easier game its shifts the focus on beating the boss to being a cool swordsman protagonist without being punished heavily. In Sekiro you can still experiment and look cool but it comes at heavy price (a portion of your experience is taken and half of your gold is deducted) so the focus mostly is optimizing until you can dance effectively. The most frustrating probably lies in that you can't cheese or overlevel a boss in Sekiro since the upgrades are gated behind bosses. Meaning you need to git gud to get stronger and then face stronger enemies.

Overall I still pretty much enjoy Sekiro but having a chill game like WOTS is a good middle ground to have between having a decent difficulty to feel to git gud while having a less frustrating experience.

Discussion A lengthy criticism of Way of the Sword – From the perspective of an old fan.

Before delving into my post, I just want to preface that I don’t think WotS is a bad game. I do think it is a fun, decent game which I have enjoyed quite a bit, but there are many design choices that I cannot come to like, especially when compared to older entries (specifically the first three games)

Too much focus on animation

One thing that is pretty clear: WotS has an insane amount of effort put into its animations; the game strives to offer very realistic-looking movement and beautiful swordplay. However, such focus on animation has created other issues:

  • Movement inertia: For movement to look realistic, it needs inertia. But having inertia rarely results in an improvement in terms of gameplay, as it impedes the precision of movement. None of the older Onimusha entries have movement inertia, which resulted in those games having very precise, snappy movement.
  • Cannot use Oni weapon for normal combat. Due to the emphasis placed on swordplay, Oni weapons now take a backseat to your primary katana, acting only as a medium for magic attacks. This is disappointing, as the versatile use of Oni weapons has always been a staple of the franchise.

Additionally, I am unsure of Capcom's design philosophy behind such intricate animation work: is it purely aesthetic, or was it intended to have a meaningful tie to gameplay? When information about the gameplay system was first revealed—such as the special focus on animation and breaking enemy parts—I initially thought WotS would take inspiration from Monster Hunter, featuring a deliberate, methodical, and tactical combat system where you must carefully plan attacks and defenses without animation cancel. Honestly, I would have been fine with that. However, during actual combat, I realized you can easily cancel attacks into actions like Parry or Issen. Even crazier, even during your falter animation (when hit by an attack and seemingly stunned for a brief moment), you can still cancel into a Parry or Issen (the only exception being when you are knocked down or stamina-broken). The thing is, you cannot actually cancel an attack by guarding, but actions like Parry and Issen have such high priority that they skip your current animation entirely. This results in a combat system where your character possesses a weighty, deliberate set of action animations, yet you can mash attack and react to enemy strikes with Parry or Issen without not worrying too much about being locked into a lengthy animation.

De-emphasis on spacing and positioning: Timing-based actions are now all that matters

In older entries, gameplay maintained a balanced combination of positioning and timing: your primary way of dealing damage relied on normal attacks, requiring proper spacing to avoid incoming blows while closing in to strike. At the same time, there was the high-risk, high-reward option of the Issen, which was exceptionally difficult due to its strict timing.

In WotS, however, the positioning game is heavily reduced. Both you and the enemy experience a degree of magnetism during attacks. If an enemy is further away, simply pressing the attack button causes Musashi to slowly close the gap without touching the analog stick. Similarly, enemy attacks do not have fixed ranges; instead, they dynamically adjust based on your distance. Unblockable attacks are even more egregious, as enemies effectively slide toward you, completely disregarding spacing inbetween. On the other hand, you are now equipped with an abundance of defensive timing options: Parry, Deflect, and Reflex Dodge.

Consequently, during boss fights, you and the boss remain glued together, as combat centers on attacking and reacting with parries, deflects, reflex dodges, or Issen, rarely requiring you to create space. The only boss where you must actively reposition yourself throughout the fight is Dokyo, whose design leans closer to traditional action games rather than the modern sword-clashing duel popular since Sekiro's paradigm shift. I genuinely love Dokyo’s fight because she felt unique compared to the rest of the boss fights (even if many dislike the fight for being gimmicky). However, it is precisely in her fight that movement inertia becomes most frustrating, as it interferes with quick navigation.

Ultimately, this design makes WotS combat feel more one-dimensional to me; despite all the intricate animations, gameplay against different enemies and bosses remains relatively static.

Too much focus on boss fights; mob enemies become an afterthought

The boss fights are great: fun, intense, and decently challenging. Unfortunately, mob encounters are terrible due to a lack of enemy variety, low aggression, an inability of basic mobs to coordinate tandem attacks, and crucially, low enemy density. While older Onimusha games are not known to have aggressive foes, enemies could attack in tandem with overlapping strikes that threw off your Issen timing, and they can appeared in large numbers to overwhelm the player.

In WotS, levels outside East Kyoto feature very few enemies—you can walk through lengthy sections without encountering a single foe, and when you do, their numbers are sparse. This makes level progression quite boring, especially given that puzzles during level progression are practically non-existent.

Design bloat disincentivizes replayability

The open-space design of East Tokyo is honestly terrible. Running around, killing basic mobs, completing tedious side quests (seriously, why are there 5 Ace Archer quests?), and farming upgrade materials are all exhausting chores. This turns WotS into a 30-hour game where half the time is spent on meaningless activities. By contrast, Onimusha Warlords can be beaten in about 5 hours, while Samurai's Destiny and Demon's Siege take around 10 to 15 hours. Locking higher difficulties behind completion makes sense in those game because they are short and dense in gameplay: you are either engage in combat or in meaningless exploration/puzzle solving, rather than walking around doing boring fillers. In WotS, however, a single playthrough completely drains my motivation to ever replay it.

Even more bafflingly, WotS lacks puzzle treasure boxes and the Dark Realm—two franchise staples. I assume the removal of puzzle was meant to improve the pacing of the game, but then we are left with tedious open-world filler that massively weights down the pacing.

Discussion Carnage is seriously souring my opinion of the game

The issue, in my opinion, is that the game wastes your time too much.

If you only do the main missions and ignore everything else, the game is a 9/10, maybe even 9.5/10. It is incredible high effort and takes you to some beautiful locations.

However, the side missions are just dreadful. They are the lowest effort, least interesting side missions possible to pad out the game time. On action, I can just ignore them and focus on the main campaign. Which makes the game really really fun. But unfortunately, on carnage, the game basically forces me to do them if Yoshitsune ends in a reasonable amount of time. And they are just terrible.

The experience of carnage is so bad to me that it is enough to knock the game down to a 7.5/10.

Playing carnage mode right now, specifically the gauntlet just before fighting yoshitsune.

I swear great nue gotta be the worst boss in the game and it's not close.

How is it in every game you play there has to be the beast type boss that gives you 7 types of different diseases 😭 I'll have more fun by dying against yoshi than playing one more time against great nue

Edit: I pulled it off, fuck great nue anyway 🫶🏻

Discussion I want the next game to begin with an Onimusha 3-style intro, but playable.

Onimusha 3 was my first Oni title back when it came out, and the opening CGI completely blew me away, to put it lightly. I had seen nothing like it at the time. I had a friend over who was equally mindblown. The choreography was just really out of this world. Will be amazing if they do something of the sort again, but have it be playable. PS6 title perhaps?! Either way, can't wait for whatever they do next.

Discussion Onimusha should have more modern, less repetitive game design

Onimusha should have had a better checkpoint and loot system, and less repetitive design. I love Onimusha, it's one of my favorite hack and slash games, but I have a lot of small grievances with the game design.

  1. Items drops and enemies respawning almost immediately. In my opinion, having items respawn removes some of the allure of looting and exploring new areas. I start to lose motivation to explore every nook and cranny of a new area when I know that the same items are going to spawn while I'm sprinting through an area that I've already explored. The same goes for enemies. I lose the motivation to not just run past enemies when they are the same enemies I just fought 2 minutes ago that already respawned.

  2. The checkpoint system is outdated for a modern hack and slash game. Instantly spawning exactly where you just left off is too convenient, and takes away from the punishment that death would give you in other games. I'm not saying that Onimusha needs a bonfire system, but I feel like it would benefit from a checkpoint system more similar to something like 007 First Light, where instead of respawning exactly where you left off, the game puts you back a little further back and you have to progress a bit more to get to where you left off. The checkpoint system is way too lenient as is.

  3. Repetitive fetch quests. Unlike some people, the repetitive bosses don't really bother me, the combat is good enough for me not to mind. But the side quests are atrocious. Almost all of them just send you to an area you've already explored, to kill a couple enemies, grab an item or shoot some targets. These are a waste of time, and should have been done away with entirely.

Onimusha is a great game with incredible combat, bosses, and story. But it could have been a perfect game if Capcom had made some minor edits in the games design. It's frustrating because these pitfalls could have been so easily avoided, and they wouldn't have had to shell out that much more money to fix them.

Question Do I have to go to New Game + for …

Hi all,

Finished the game for the first time today but fell short of a few upgrades

1) One upgrade for Gauntlet. X3 Malicite and x1 max malicite but the shop has sold out

2) The purple pouch needs both levels. Requires more of the above items as well. Not ideal.

2) x3 Oni stones to fully max abilities.

Any way I get the above? Can I just re do the rub up to the final boss and hope it gives me enough? Just wanting to tick off a few more achievements.

I don’t fancy Carnage given the games approach to NG+ and with Yotei complete edition available I’m tempted to do more samurai action elsewhere

Discussion Yoshitsune easier than Ganryu? Spoiler

I just finished the game and first of all, wow. What a game dude. Absolutely loved every minute of it. I had been hearing how brutally difficult the final boss was and was getting a bit worried due to how much of a hard time the Ganryu rematch gave me. For some reason i just absolutely steamrolled Yoshitsune. I think it took maybe 15-20 attempts all in all and I don’t know, i was just very surprised is all and wondered if anyone else experienced the same thing🤷‍♂️

10/10 game tho, bloody incredible.

Discussion How good is this game compared to the older titles?

Onimusha 3 was my favourite, and I’m currently working my way through Dawn of Dreams for the first time. One of my favourite parts of the franchise has always been the cool magic weapons, however after playing the demo of Way of the Sword and learning that the magic weapons got reduced to a smaller ability instead of a full new weapon, I was turned away from the game. How good is it compared to the older games with this change?

End-game results Final boss - no hit (no weapon/gear upgrades, no bishamon sword, Carnage difficulty) Spoiler

FWIW I'm pretty sure the boss rematch boss HP does scale with weapon upgrade or game progression amount because this fight time is basically the same as when I fought him with almost fully upgraded sword in rematch.

Fun boss. Wish his swipe attacks weren't purple because that was really confusing to me.

I had to switch to story mode to beat the final boss. I’ve been grinding my ass and went all in on the hard difficulty but after 3 days, I couldn’t beat the final boss and switched to story. I feel like such a failure

How the hell are people beating him on carnage? Now that I’ve beaten him and the stress is off, I plan to go back and beat him on hard mode.

This game is 10/10
