I keep browsing thread after thread and watching recommendations from r/horror, and I've seen most of the classics at this point in my life. I wouldn't call myself a movie buff or a critic but just a person looking to get scared. Recently that new Evil Dead movie came out and spoiler-free, it wasn't scary. It was just, y'know, modern action/horror stuff. Sure it was well-shot, great effects, a bit cheesy but overall a solidly made movie... but not scary.
Funny Games isn't scary, The Dark and the Wicked wasn't scary-- it feels like that place keeps recommending "Thinking Man's Horror" and stuff like the horror of existential circumstances. Sure that can definitely scare some people, no offense there. But the last and best example of a scary movie I could name is Incantation, where it felt like that build-up wasn't just extreme slowburn but it really made you afraid like-- "If you look at this, it's not just a movie anymore, you're actually cursed." and that sort of thing was good because it wasn't horror happening to fictional protagonists, but you the viewer.
Which kind of loops back to Funny Games; yes they break the fourth wall but it's really more of a comedy than horror. Break-ins happen every day irl and they're scarier than Funny Games. So I'm just trying to get movies that like, I hesitate to say mess with the viewer because that just loops back to psychological movies that make you ruminate on the deeper meaning; I don't want that lol. I just want something that's actually tough to watch, not in a "oh gore is gross" sense but hard to sit through without feeling terrified, something that makes you want to pause and turn the lights on and look behind you. Do movies like that still exist for adults?
