HANG OUT Best Movies You Saw September 2026

What are the top films you saw in September 2026 and why? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

I define great movies to be 8+ or if you abhor grades, the top 20% of all movies you've ever seen.

Films listed by posters within this thread receive a Vote to determine if they will appear in the subreddit's Top 100, as well as the ten highest Upvoted Suggested movies from last month.

The Top 10 highest upvoted suggestion posts from last month were:

# Title Upvotes
1 Reign of Fire (2002) 114
2 Aftersun (2022) 84
3 Thank You For Smoking (2005) 74
4 Searching For Sugar Man (2012) 68
5 Pleasantville (1998) 64
6 Psycho Goreman (2020) 57

8 Lair of the White Worm (1988) 47
9 La Haine (1995) 43
10 Project Hail Mary (2026) 41

Note: Due to Reddit's Upvote fuzzing, it will rank movies in their actual highest Upvoted and then assign random numbers. This can result in movies with lower Upvotes appearing higher than movies with higher Upvotes.

What are the top films you saw in September 2026 and why? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

I'M REQUESTING Early horror(before the 80s) that still holds up as scary/disturbing to this day

I just watched Freaks(1932) and was a little shocked at how hard it went for the time period. I know it’s only like 10 minutes at the end but it was still amazing.

So I’m looking for some more pre-80s horror that still holds up. Of course I know of stuff like Psycho, the exorcist and all the popular stuff. Thank you.

I'M REQUESTING Movies with a "Canadiana" feel

i.e. movies that heavily feature iconography distinctive of Canada, feature an aesthetic that’s a mix of warm, cosy comfort and rugged wilderness associated with the Canadian region, or just movies otherwise set in an idyllic version of Canada.

I'M REQUESTING What are movies that will have me thinking about them for the rest of the week.

I was never really a movie person. I think legitimately the only movies I’ve ever watched in my life are marvel movies and like Disney movies when I was a kid. But I’ve never even watched the big name movies like avatar or interstellar.

But can you guys recommend me some movies that will just give the feeling of I’m gonna think about this for like the rest of the week at work. It can be emotional, romantic, suspenseful. Just whatever you think would be something that will just suck me in. Thank you for any recs 🙏

I'M REQUESTING Children's movie with good natured, young, female character.

My 2.5 year old daughter loves "The Sound of Music" but I have it almost memorised at this point and need to mix things up a bit.

She liked the recent "secret garden" but several people,my self included, noticead a decline in her politeness and attitude after watching it a few times. The main character is not very nice(to put it mildly).

Im looking for children's movies that feature girls who are sweet, kind, good-natured, and virtuous. Obedience to GOOD parents is a plus.

An good example is "My Neighbor Totoro" but im worried it is a little intense for a 2 year old.

"The Little Princess" is also great, but I Bawl my eyes out whenever I watch it.

++++edit: thank you all for your sugestions!

I'M REQUESTING Help me figure out movies to watch with my wife

So my wife has strange tastes in movies and I can't ever figure out what she will like. Any movie suggestions would be nice.

These are her favorites:

All Sharknado movies

Mall Cop

Norbit

How to be a Latin Lover

It (newest films)

RRR

Any and all Jean-Claude Van Damme movies

Terminator 2

She likes horror films but she is picky.

I tried showing her these and she hated them:

Kill Bill

From Dusk Til Dawn

Something from the Underworld movie series

Yeah I know there are only 3 but I really have given up picking them at this point

Edited to say: I tried to show her The Hangover 1 as well. She hated it and left after 20 minutes

Edited a 2nd time - my wife is from a foreign country so she does not get American humor based on pop culture

I'M REQUESTING Movies that emphasize the appeal and charm of a big city?

Alright I’ll explain as best I can. I’m in the mood to watch a movie that that really shows the appeal of a big city

It can be a big city that’s in the states, Europe, Tokyo, etc

It doesn’t necessarily have to even involve the plot of the movie so much but maybe the cinematography is great and just shows the vibes really well

Like I remember when I was in Tokyo and just walking around at night and the vibes around it. I’m just trying to find a movie like that

I'M REQUESTING Films in the spirit of Clint Eastwood's character The Man With No Name

Your stoic rogue rolling into some odd town, a wanderer, someone not looking for trouble but it always seems to find him. Oddly music-wise, and vibe-wise, the first Mando season is very similar and I'm assuming that was deliberate. Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher games also was deliberately modeled after Eastwood's character.

Kind of a cheat code, but Unforgiven is very close. One could argue it's his Dollars Trilogy character but now in a more grounded setting battling with his own internal demons.

I'M REQUESTING New York movies with buildings from the beginning of the 20th century

I’m looking for movies set in New York in which buildings from around 1900 play a major role. One film that comes to mind is Rosemary’s Baby, where the apartment building is essential to the movie’s atmosphere. I’d love to hear your suggestions!

I'M REQUESTING Movies like Jacob’s Ladder. Psychologically disturbing and trippy. Movies where you’re trying to figure out what’s happening but still with that disturbing element.

I think Prisoners, Saint maud and the lodge are some other good examples.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that with horror/thriller type movies I like the disturbing element a bit more than the scary element so I want to explore that a bit more. What’s disturbing to me is the psychological confusion element. Thank you

I'M REQUESTING Deepest love movies that end well but aren’t too cheesy

I want to see two people truly connect (have a well-developed relationship) and also end up together. Something classier than You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, While You Were Sleeping, etc. which are too romcommy for my tastes.

Already saw these:

The Notebook
The Before Trilogy
When Harry Met Sally
A Walk to Remember
A Room with a View
Pride & Prejudice
North & South
True Romance
Contact

Also, it would be ideal if they fell in love for deeper reasons rather than looks or other superficial stuff.

I'M REQUESTING movies where a group of friends hangs out all night and nothing catastrophic happens

i love the vibe of people just wandering around at 2am talking nonsense, but every time i look for it the movie turns into a tragedy or a murder plot. just want low stakes nighttime hangout energy. horror is allowed if it's more funny than bleak.

I'M REQUESTING Serial killer horror

Looking for some horror or maybe even some thrillers(especially psychological thrillers) about serial killers.

Can be from the perspective of the killer(like maniac, the house that Jack built ect)or from the perspective of one of the victims.

I like 70s-80s the most but I do like every era. Thank you

I'M REQUESTING Name a movie you’ve always had in mind, but never watched

Name a movie you’ve always had in mind, but never watched for whatever reason. What movie and reason for not watching it?

I remember as a kid some weird scary movie. A “robot” wanted a kid of its own, so it trapped or kidnapped a woman and basically created a baby with her. The final shot was a baby encased in a metal shell that it broke out of like an egg.

Looked mine up, it’s: Demon Seed

I'M REQUESTING recommendations for a very picky horror fan?

i love scary movies/books/games but am pretty picky, especially with movies. a lot of horror movies strike me as dumb and i just don't enjoy them. i guess i tend to like smart horror with a certain degree of polish and solid writing - i honestly can't stand movies like the conjuring, insidious, etc. the writing sucks and it feels corny and cheap. that said, i also like movies that don't take themselves too seriously.

i have a list of some favorites here and i'm hoping you fine folks can recommend a few more based on my taste - if you like these movies too, please chime in!!

some horror movies i enjoyed:

it follows (my fave!!)

as above so below

barbarian

obsession

bring her back

grave encounters

backrooms

scary women

deadstream

green room

skinamarink

night house

midsommar

the ritual

nope

I'M REQUESTING Any recent low-key politicolegal thrillers, the kind they used to make in the 90s?

I'm looking for recent low-key politicolegal thrillers, the kind I remember from the 90s: Presumed Innocent (1990), Q&A (1990), Night Falls on Manhattan (1996), City Hall (1996), etc. Films made by top directors with top actors. Things you can imagine Alan Pakula, Sidney Lumet or Sydney Pollack making were they living in our time. Thanks in advance.

I'M REQUESTING Reverse "Taken" movies, where the daughter rescues the dad

The only instance I was able to find was "Arcane: League of Legends (2021-2024) Season 1 Episode 3", when Vi tried to rescue Vander.

I'm looking for movies that explore this space, in any genre or in any capacity.

I'M SUGGESTING Tideland (2005) — one of Terry Gilliam’s strangest and most uncomfortable films

I’m suggesting Tideland because it’s one of those movies that’s hard to recommend without warning people what they’re getting into.

It follows a young girl escaping into an elaborate fantasy world while the reality around her becomes increasingly disturbing. What makes it unusual is that the movie often refuses to tell you exactly how you’re supposed to feel about what you’re watching.

I liked it a lot, but it’s strange, uncomfortable, darkly funny and definitely not for everyone.

If you like movies that feel like a child’s imagination colliding with something much darker, this one is worth trying.

I'M REQUESTING Ensemble cast adventure/comedy movies?

I'M SUGGESTING Wristcutters: a love story

Dark comedy love story that really really touched my heart. Patrick Fugit needs to be in more things that are worth his time, this is the type of movie that really keeps you going. Tom waits is great as always.

I'M REQUESTING Recommend me a thriller I absolutely cannot predict

I’m looking for a suspense thriller where I genuinely have no idea what’s going to happen next.

I want something with insane twists, constant suspense, and a story that keeps changing my expectations. The kind of movie that completely messes with your mind and leaves you shocked when the truth is finally revealed.

Please don’t spoil anything—just drop the movie name.

I want a full-on mind-fuck experience. 🧠
