Mod Post Are you correctly registered to vote?

Ahead of the November Municipal Elections, a number of voter registration drives will be held. The first is scheduled to be on 20-21 June.

To check where you are registered, input your details in: https://www.elections.org.za/pw/Voter/Voter-Information

To check where you should be registered, find your address in: https://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/

If the two are not the same you need to re register at the "should be" voting station during the upcoming voter registration weekends.

It takes a few minutes to check that your details are correct. If you can, please also do so with the less technically included members of your friends and family.

History Owl House, Nieu Bethesda

Hi everyone

I’m trying to find out more about Helen Martins, the artist and owner of the Owl House in Nieu Bethesda. I went there as a young girl with my family and remember a very dark and strange energy in and around the house. I’d love to go back and revisit as an adult.

Does anyone have more info about the house, the art and Helen herself? I know she painted with glass, Koos Malgas helped with her sculptures and that she (apparently) didn’t have a good relationship with her dad.

So, basically, what was your experience and do you have any info about the Owl House in general?

Discussion Unwanted Followers on Yaga

Hi everyone,

I recently joined Yaga to sell some of my old clothing (as most people do). I don't have many profile followers, but pretty quickly I noticed a few profiles that follow my store belong to older men - around a 3rd of my total followers now consist of this demographic. I am a female in my 20s. I suppose people can buy whatever they want to, but I seriously doubt any of these profiles are interested in making a purchase.

Has anyone else had the same experience? I have read that even if you block a profile, they can still see your store. Is this correct?

For anyone wondering, some of the pictures are of me wearing the item as I know this gives people more information of the fit than a picture of the item lying flat. I don't post anything with my face in it and I don't use my real name.

Edit: Any suggestions/ advice is appreciated - even just general online safety tips that you have noticed a lot of people miss.

Discussion Losing our culture

Post image
250 Upvotes

Hi everyone, hope you all are having a wonderful evening.

I know heritage day has passed but I would like to draw everyone's attention to the loss of culture happening to our taxi's.

I grew up seeing the box shape taxi's ( no idea what the actual name is) with vinyl wrap of half naked women, some had animals, or others famous rappers. They were colourful, illustrative, and eye catching. You could easily identify which taxi you needed to take.

Nowadays all I see are these boring white quantum's. They all look the same. We're supposed to be a rainbow nation, why are all of our taxi's white. What happened to wrapping taxi's ?? Can we please bring them back, they were fun to look at.

I added a picture if anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about.

Discussion Has Spur lost its taste for life? 😢

Thumbnail

We went for dinner last night at Spur and there's so much missing... It's not the Spur that 10 year old me remembers, I know times change and franchises adapt, grow and evolve but this much evolution has taken the taste for life out of the Spur.

They no longer do the famous Hot Rock which was my favourite thing to order where you get to finish off your steak on a preheated "rock" at your table.

The placemats have undergone the dreaded corporatisation of being dull grey and black woven plastic mats and no longer the leather placemats with the Spur story 😔

What happened to the snails?? Spur was well known for their snail starters??

Are we really paying R150 for a plate of nachos now? Blow me dead.

The burger buns?? Are they supplied by McDonald's? They're paper thin! The patties have become steers size too.

Why are they still claiming that their Buffalo wings are 16 wings when it's actually 8 wings cut in 2?

Where did all the outback wild wild west decor go? The cowboy prints and native Indian murals?

We ordered two cocktails and asked them to please not fill the glasses with ice, we wanted a little bit of ice, so we received half filled cocktail glasses. They wouldn't even top up the remaining glass space with soda water?

Spur is a core childhood memory but it's not that spur anymore.

Which other restaurants have lost their hearts to the stock exchange?

We're looking for privately owned restaurants to visit now, that still serve with the love for people and food, and Burger buns that are actually buns, not rounded slices of Albany bread

EDIT TO ADD

WHERE has the chocolate brownies gone?? Spur had by far, the best brownies, of all restaurants. They no longer serve them??

Discussion Would having a unique car make you a target to criminals or crime

I dont own a car and cant even legally get my license for 2 years so this is just a post for fun/curiosity

I've seen really pretty cars on pinterest with unique designs and drawings on them but wondered if making your car and therefore you extremely identifiable is the greatest idea

I know the issue of if you dont have a garage or a house with gates where your car isn't easily seen it also allows for you address to be easily linked to you if someone knows your car

So I dont think I would even consider getting unique car unless I have a proper garage or private place to park it

But then at the same time, wouldn't having a more uncommon car in terms of brand prevent criminals lifting your tires or some shit since there isn't as much demand for them?

What would be the pros and cons of an unique car with a more uncommon brand be

Discussion Admin Blocked

Good Day All.

I hope i am on the right group for this question.

I am in possesion of a car that i bought over from a lady, this lady immigrated to Amerika.

She has left me the logbook and signed off yellow forms, but the licensing offices told me that she is admin blocked and the car can not be moved to my name. The license is a few years behind also, but i will pay the penalties, however, i am also willing to pay the admin block.

They refuse to allow me to pay the admin block and uplift it, she must do so in person.

I can not get hold of her in Amerika.

I apologise if my grammer is not the best, i have tried to explain it the best i can.

Please, is there someone that could shed some light?

Discussion Making cream cheese out of amasi

I saw a video of a person making it and it came out well and he said it had only a very slight amasi taste

I saw other people do it and they said it tasted like straight up amasi that was strained

It seems the differentiating factor that lead to success was the fact that they used 100% fat amasi whereas others used the cheaper lower fat kind

Im just wondering if its turned out good enough for someone so I try it without too much worry its gonna turn out bad as I dont wanna waste my money and time

Discussion Can my employer change my conditions of employment like this?

In August, I moved from Cape Town Joburg for a job. From day 1 I have been adhering to a hybrid work schedule, as was agreed to verbally during the interview/selection process. My contract does not mention this work schedule, nor did the offer letter, however a policy exists which I have though roughly read through, specifying that one must be in office on Mondays and Tuesday and can work from home the rest of the week. For context: I moved here at my own expense. And oh what an expense it was. I got a prorated salary for the first month, and it hurt as someone with a whole adult life to fund, especially directly after a move. Anyway. Since starting, my performance is still going strong - with my direct manager frequently remarking that I've been doing more than expected and impressing him. Around mid-September I was on a 1 minute teams call with this direct manager, where he told me that there is a new requirement that all staff on probation must go into office everyday until the end of probation. Now they communicated the probationary period of 3 months during the hiring process, but at no point - in no meeting, document or email - did they disclose that I would have to come in everyday during probation prior to this teams call at the end of the day. I objected due to financial reasons (mentioned above) and requested a proper meeting to voice my concerns. He said we should come in the next day to discuss it. The day came. No discussion. No meeting. Just words in passing. Mind you, in that email I initially asked to at least have until the end of September (payday), but once I actually sat down and budgetted I realised it was not possible. When I got home that evening I typed another email to my direct manager, formally stating the objection once again, basically boiling down to: This was a unilateral change, with no clear reason given and no consultation This changes the conditions I agreed to This change, with no time to prepare, puts me under immediate financial hardship To date my manager has only ever responded verbally in person or via a teams call. He did not reply to my email, instead sending me a teams message saying he understands and that I shouldn't worry about it now. I don't believe he ever mentioned my concerns or emails to the General Manager, who is the one who issued this directive. Fast forward to today, I get told by my direct Manager during an unrelated meeting WITH ANOTHER COLLEAGUE PRESENT that I'm going to receive repercussions on Monday for not adhering to the directive. None of my emails were replied no, still no meeting has been had, and the communication has been laughably bad. I get the impression my direct manager is afraid of standing up to anyone above him. They also have not communicated the reason for this change. My questions: What can I expect from the meeting on Monday? What should I/shouldn't I say? And, can they legally fire me for not complying?

Nostalgia JACARANDA SEASON!!! (Purple Rain)

Post image
289 Upvotes

Somewhere between the last dry days of September and the first rains, South Africa changes its mind about colour.

One tree wakes up lavender. Then another. Then whole streets, as if the city had been quietly handed a crown and told to act natural.

The jacarandas do not bloom politely. They bloom like a decision, and then they let go, scattering petals on pavements, parked cars, and the shoulders of people who forgot they were in a hurry.

I was born into this purple. As a child, I assumed the trees were doing it for me. I have since been informed otherwise, but I remain unconvinced. October being my birthday, I believe this is no coincidence. I mean October's birthstones, opal and tourmaline, both come in violet shades! It October babies' season!!

October is a doorway. The blossoms usher in the rains, the rains usher in the green, and the green walks us gently toward the end of the year. It is the season of quiet accounting: what I planned, what I became instead, and which of the two I like better.

The tree teaches this without saying a word. It waits all year, ordinary and green, then has its few weeks of glory. It sheds without grief and trusts the ground to make something of it. Purple, they say, is the colour of reflection, and nothing makes you reflect like standing under a tree that is gently letting go of its best work.

So each year I stand beneath the falling purple, one more year old, one more year softer, and let the trees do what they do best: remind me that beginnings and endings are the same flower, seen from different sides.

Discussion Car crash near Tyger Valley

There was a car crash near Tyger Valley on Saturday night at around 22:20. The vehicle involved was a white car, which ended up overturned and lying on its roof. The person who passed away in this accident is my best friend. I'm trying to piece together exactly what happened that night. I'm looking for somebody who either:

• Witnessed the accident happen.

• Drove past the scene shortly before or after 22:20.

• Has dashcam footage from the area around that time.

• Lives nearby and might have heard something or has home security/CCTV cameras facing the road.

If you know anything at all, no matter how small or insignificant you think it might be, please send me a message.
