News Namibia’s new vehicle number plates

Post image
23 Upvotes

The Ministry of Works & Transport is preparing to introduce a new national vehicle number-plate system aimed at combating fraud, vehicle theft, cloned plates and the manipulation of registration details.🚘

All major categories of plates are expected to change, including those for private, government, diplomatic and public passenger vehicles. Taxis and long-distance passenger vehicles are expected to move from the current yellow plates to blue plates.

The new national standard is being designed with around eight security features, including machine-readable QR/barcode technology and hologram-related protection. The system is intended to make plates harder to counterfeit while allowing authorities to electronically verify a vehicle, its registered owner and the authorised manufacturer that produced its plate.

News Nigeria’s Access Bank enters Namibia as new commercial bank

Post image
3 Upvotes

Nigeria’s Access Bank has officially entered the Namibian banking market after receiving full authorisation from the Bank of Namibia to operate as a commercial bank.🏦

The approval allows Access Bank Namibia to accept deposits and provide banking services to the public, bringing a new competitor into Namibia’s roughly N$200 billion banking sector. The move follows nearly two years of regulatory preparations after the bank first received provisional authorisation in October 2024.

During the provisional period, Access Bank was not permitted to accept deposits or conduct normal banking business with the public while it worked to meet regulatory, operational and compliance requirements. The bank used the period to build its Namibian operations, recruit local professionals and train Namibian graduates through its banking programme in Lagos.

News Namibia’s petrol price to rise by N$1.50 to N$26.58 per litre from October 7th, diesel prices remain unchanged

Post image
3 Upvotes

The Ministry of Industries, Mines & Energy has announced a nationwide fuel price increase, with petrol rising by N$1.50 per litre and both diesel grades remaining unchanged, effective Wednesday (October 7th).⛽

The new per litre pump prices for Walvis Bay (national price anchor) will be N$26.58 for petrol, N$27.86 for diesel 50ppm, and N$27.96 for diesel 10ppm, with prices in all other towns adjusting according to the transport differential.

The increase was because international petrol prices rose sharply by 19.27% from August to September, while higher shipping costs, disruptions to global oil supplies linked to the Middle East conflict, and restrictions on petroleum exports pushed import costs even higher. A weaker Namibia dollar against the US dollar also made imported fuel more expensive.

Looking for advice from business owners/entrepreneurs

I’m currently in the process of starting a small business finance and bookkeeping/consulting company, with the long-term goal of growing it into a larger financial services business.

My biggest challenge right now is getting my first few paying clients.

For those of you who have successfully started a service-based business, especially in accounting, bookkeeping, consulting or professional services:

How did you get your very first clients?

Did you rely on:

  • Personal networking?
  • Referrals?
  • Facebook/LinkedIn?
  • Cold calling?
  • Approaching businesses directly?
  • Partnerships with other professionals?
  • Offering a free/low-cost initial service?
  • Something completely different?

I’m particularly interested in hearing what actually worked for you in the beginning, rather than generic advice like "just advertise."

I want to build the business properly and start generating clients as soon as possible, but without coming across as desperate or underpricing the service.

Any practical advice, lessons learned, or mistakes to avoid would be greatly appreciated.

What would you do if you were starting from zero today?

Best hair brand/fibre for Boho French Curl Braids?

Calling all the hair savvy people of Namibia.

Honestly, I'm stumped. I really want to try and give this style a look— especially for an event I'm attending soon. I'm going for a bob-cut/ shoulder length look but I'm hesitant as I do not know what are the BEST fibres to acquire to make this style look good. Any suggestions? Money is not an issue— it just needs to already be available in this country and not an import I need to get here.

For a time such as this, I particularly beg the gatekeepers to let the floodgates open. This is a humble plea from a woman trying her best.

Questions from a dumb American post visit

Learned as much as I could from books before I came to understand a bit of the history. Though after our visit, I have a lot of questions about the present that I’m not sure books can help.

Sorry if these come off as ignorant but… I literally am.

- Why are there so many people waiting on the highway? Especially hanging out at highway off-ramps in Windhoek. Is it for a taxi?

- I wasn’t sure if it was ok to help the people on the side of the road in Damaraland area waving empty water bottles.

If I did it again I’d bring gallons and gallons with me cuz it feels very shitty zooming past. We did give a gallon once but the guy asked for N$200.

- So many kids asking for food along Zambezi Region. I know you’re not supposed to give anything… but damn.

- I wanted to ask the 10000 Germans we saw at hotels what they learned about Namibia in school…if anything.

- Every time I was standing in line to pay for snacks or something inside a gas station etc, we’d constantly get cut in line. By many people. Is it a thing you’re just supposed to hover next to the person checking out? We’d wait til they were done to move up.

I don’t care because … who cares. I’m very obviously a tourist so I’d agree locals have right of way anyway.

Jobs [Paid Opportunity] Looking for native Afrikaans speakers (SA & Namibia) to help train voice AI 🗣️

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out from Afriklang. We're currently putting together a large-scale speech collection project to train AI models to actually understand natural, conversational Afrikaans.

Instead of generating synthetic audio or making people read robotic scripts, we are looking for real, native human speech to ensure the language is represented accurately in future tech.

What we’re looking for:

  • Native Afrikaans speakers from South Africa or Namibia.
  • Natural conversations: We need authentic, two-speaker (or multi-speaker) conversations, not stiffly read text.
  • Consent & Rights: Because this is for commercial AI training, you will need to provide documented consent for your audio to be used.

How it works: This is a paid opportunity. We operate on a fair-trade, compensated sourcing model, meaning you will be paid per approved hour of recorded speech.

If you want to earn some extra money and help ensure Afrikaans is captured authentically in AI, we’d love to hear from you.

👉 You can read the full details and apply here:https://afriklang.com/contribute/apply📧 Or drop us an email at: [contact@afriklang.com](mailto:contact@afriklang.com)

Happy to answer any questions you might have in the comments!

Tourism Visiting

Hi I will be visiting Namibia soon - this will include Windhoek, the coast and Etosha.

In terms of packing is there anything in particular that might not be obvious that would be vital?

Also how usual is it for places to cut electric at night/are outages common?

I've spent a bit of time in other parts of Southern Africa and very excited to return and see Namibia

My aunt is visiting Windhoek for the very first time and she is wheelchair bound. She can kind of walk but stairs present a severe fall risk.

Does anyone know how wheelchair access works given the typical access on the ramp by stairs?

General Dating for Foreign Women in Namibia? Apps or In-Person? What Do You Recommend?

Hi everyone!

I know this question has been asked before on this sub, but I noticed it hasn't been asked recently. I recently moved to Namibia from the United States.

I wanted to know which apps would be great for me as a foriegn woman to use to meet people for dates or friendships. Personally, I'm open to different things, but I'm focused on casual and friendly interactions.

I'm not based in Windhoek, but I'll be there this weekend and wanted to meet someone for a date while I was there.

What apps would be best for that? I was considering Badoo or Tinder, but I noticed sites like DatingNamibia are also popular?

I'm curious what would work best for me as a late 20s Black woman from the US? Are there any places/apps/sites I should skip or avoid?

I'm open to local and international people that are around my age and up. Ethnicity, race, and overall appearance aren't relevant to me. I'd just like a place I can find different types of people!

Also, is there anything I should keep in mind as a foreign woman dating here? Any cultural and social things I should be mindful of?

Thank you!
