Discussion Losing our culture
Hi everyone, hope you all are having a wonderful evening.
I know heritage day has passed but I would like to draw everyone's attention to the loss of culture happening to our taxi's.
I grew up seeing the box shape taxi's ( no idea what the actual name is) with vinyl wrap of half naked women, some had animals, or others famous rappers. They were colourful, illustrative, and eye catching. You could easily identify which taxi you needed to take.
Nowadays all I see are these boring white quantum's. They all look the same. We're supposed to be a rainbow nation, why are all of our taxi's white. What happened to wrapping taxi's ?? Can we please bring them back, they were fun to look at.
I added a picture if anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about.

I grew up with a taxi that went to school having a huge Spawn (comic book character) I think vinyl wrap all over the taxi and that was in the late 90s

didn't this happen in 2010 when all the taxis had to be the new Toyota ones with the SA flag banner on the side, they pretty much outlawed a lot of the old ones. I don't think you're allowed to wrap a taxi however you want anymore, they have guidelines.

Yup, I'm with you on the taxis. Another thing, the taxi drivers used to pride themselves with how clean their taxis were. Polished tires with those shining rims 👌. Remember the straws? That long thing on the side, I don't know what its actually called. We called it a straw 😅. Taxis inspired me to get a good sound system when I got my own place.
Nowadays most taxis are beat up, you can see through the car the road below you

Yes! The straw is actually on the attached photo 😆. What is that thing called?

I'll go check them out! For some reason I thought car shows were limited to just cars

I know the feeling, for me its the exact same with modern trains and their lack of Graffiti. I love Graffiti and would always love to see the yellow trains pass and look at the mural they have become. Now its all these bland Gautrains with no personality.
I'm all for better technology and can understand looking clean, but I miss the style they used have.

Personality over looks for me! Oooo I remember the last time I was in Gauteng, the gautrain definitely looked morden. But yes it lacked soul

The reason they are that colour and design isn't actually that they were outlawed.
Instead the government provides partial subsidies (or did, at least) for those taxis under certain conditions including the presentation. This was an attempt to improve safety and accessibility.
However last I heard, the subsidy hasn't really kept up with inflation, so may be why we are starting to see more unique models and after market wraps

Considering the issues we have, I'm pretty happy not to see half-naked women on them anymore.
I do see one with cows on it every now and then, and that always makes me smile.

The quantums replaced the Siyayas in 2010 as part of the whole world cup campaign. They're still around in poorer areas

I so wanted to make one like this as my next project. Restored another classic. A 325i but its gotten dangerous to drive so its up for sale.
Entire family is avidly against getting this old hiace and doing it the phoenix style. Wall of subs the works.

I guess that was cool. But the quantums are now the new culture, the uniformity is necessary because they represent public transportation for the public , people need to be able to spot them. I think they are fine, they are all white, clean, with small details like the South African flag colours. It would be too chaotic and messy otherwise with graffiti and all that.

Wraps are expensive as fuck, and within a week or two the psycho driver will have fucked it up somehow.
