Why was there no widespread further experimentation with burst fire secondaries

Pretty much title. Mainly thinking about the beretta 93r, and why no countries experimented with the same concept but lighter recoiling rounds like 5.7? What would be the shortcomings in a military or private security setting of a higher capacity, lighter recoiling, and lighter sidearm with burst fire capability as a secondary rather than expensive and heavier PDWs with select fire capability? I know about the automatic FN Five-seveN and the .22 SCAMP program from the seventies but surely technology has improved since then? Unless I’m missing something super critical?

What can and should I do to prepare for my first gun in a year.

I am about a year away from being able to purchase a handgun here in florida. I have no prior experience with firearms. (Besides a potato canon i made with my dad, if that even counts) I wanted to start doing my research and learning more about the subject in general so im not another idiot who bought a gun without knowing their stuff and putting everyone in danger. Any advice on where i should start? I know i should research local gun laws, but should i take a course? If so what course? What guns should I research for a first firearm? Is there anything that is often overlooked that shouldn’t be? Am I completely forgetting something? I want to know as much as possible in a year!
Any and all advice would be much appreciated.

Anything to keep an eye out for this Black Friday?

Last Black Friday was my first Black Friday after really getting into guns. Managed to have enough funds to pick up a couple DD uppers from brownells for around $660 each which felt too good to pass up. From what I’ve heard and read those DD Black Friday upper sales are pretty much the best BF deals in the entire industry lol. Anything else to keep any eye out on? Or should I just ignore the potential “deals” and buy whatever I’m gonna buy now?

Mainly looking at Ammo deals, would also like another SRO.

Does anyone know if primary arms has good deals on LPVOs on BF?

Hey guys, probably an oft seen question. 30-30 Lever vs 308 Bolt

Long story short, I’m in the market for a deer rifle. I’m in a position where I only can afford one. I’m hunting in the AR and OK type of woodland/meadows.

I’m aware 308 bolt is better for distance, and stopping power. However in the woodland areas, I’m also thinking 30-30 based on ability to follow up and maneuverability.

All in all, I’m torn between the two bc it’s a similar price point after glass is purchased. Help pls.

What to do with half-empty box of ammunition?

I found a half empty box of .38 special when cleaning out a family member’s garage and I don’t own anything in that caliber (nor do I plan on buying anything in .38 special)

Can I just bring it to a gun shop for disposal?

Unknown magazine ID

I have had a box magazine for years now. I have zero clue what it is for. There are zero markings anywhere. Nothing. It does not go into an ar-15 magwell. It’s like it is too fat, and it is shaped differently than a standard P-Mag. Does anyone have any clue?

Edit: I think we have a winner. Looks like it is an AR-180 magazine. Anybody got one they want to give me to let me try it in?

Earbuds or Headphones

I am new to r/guns and the whole gun shooting scene (Hi everyone) I’m going to the range more with my buddies and I want to get a bunch of gear.

Wondering what headphones are best for sound reduction that are comfortable; but not bulky enough to get caught on the stock. I borrow my friends and his has a mic on it and my other friend wears earbuds and I’ve never particularly worn their earbuds but I can imagine them being more comfortable and tactically better.

I know both can work if you’re shooting rifles and snipers but which is better for sound reduction and more practical in weekly use?

PS. Need cool eyewear too if yall got any recommendations.

Practice gun for complete novices

Hi there! My husband and I recently purchased 2 Sig Sauer P365s. We're total newbies. I'm interested in getting a bb or pellet gun for backyard practice. I'm here to ask for recommendations. I see that Sig Sauer has a bb replica gun. Would that be the best option, or is there a suitable less expensive option? I appreciate any advice. Thx!

My Build

I’m trying to price out the build of an AR. I want it to be a 12.5, maybe longer, just depending on how the NFA stuff goes down. What parts should I splurge on, what can I kinda skimp on, and what all should I put on it (optics, grips, sights, scales, muzzle, etc.)

CCW Etiquette

In my state there is only the requirement to pass the mandatory range qualification portion with a handgun. No caliber, size, action, or form factor requirements or limits.

Hypothetically would it be cool if I brought my 14.5” AR Pistol in 5.56 with a SBA6 brace to do the range qual? I just feel like this is the only reasonable and optimal path to impressing the instructors.

I need a little help for First Handgun

Let me just give you a little insight before anything. I'm a student and for the first time in my life i am properly dipping my toes into world of guns and shooting. Now I'm looking to buy my very first handgun, now that being said I will tell you my experience with guns before. My father has 7,65ČZ small compact handgun that he was using in a war while he was Colonel. I've tried that gun and it was horrific so heavy and not very ergonomic but hey first gun that i've used. Then i went to gun range to pass a "course" so i can get my gun license (I live in Croatia btw) and instructor gave me his Glock 17 gen 4 and i absolutly hated that gun for some reason. It was very uncomfortable. Since i can only use gun on range and cannot conceal it (its almost impossible to get that permit) my father bought me Glock 19 gen5 that operates on Co2 so i can pracitce dry fire, draws, etc...when i'm traveling. And G19 was super comfortable in hand, everything felt like a dream (idiotic word i know).

Now that you know my story i need help with recommendation. I fell in love with Springfield/HS Echelon. Its super cheap, right in my budget around 650. I wanted glock but it costs around 1100. And echelon in croatian gun so i have all the parts and everything.

However i'm in a small dilema. I cannot choose between 4.0C and 4.5F. Gun will be primarily for range. However with the situation in the world i want somethung that i can still conceal if shit goes completely down. Now does that 0.5 inches make that huge difference or not? Do any of you have experience with those models and if you do pls help me out.

What are these dark spots?

Just got my brand new 92fs inox in the mail and see these, are they just cosmetic issues? Any idea how to remove them without damaging the finish?

I cleaned it with a hard plastic brush and CLP several times. They got a bit better but they are still there.

4th Commandment in HD/SD

Any round that has enough penetration to be effective has enough to be a risk for what's behind a threat. There are options that are effective at shedding energy via expansion or fragmentation once they hit a target, but walls and doors are not bullet stops; even the ideal of hitting a stud at oblique angle still retains some risk.

When in a house, we can preplan floorplans or room use to help this some; having the kids' rooms at the end of the hall, with master bedroom being first, so that there's a better chance of being between kids and the threat.

In my home, bedrooms are on the second floor, with stairs between my room and the other two bedrooms, which bothers the heck out of me; engaging a threat at the top of the stairs from my bedroom door puts one room right in the line of fire. That room is unoccupied, with the other room being about a 45deg angle away from line of fire. It's not ideal, but it's some level of risk mitigation.

For folks in apartments, is there really anything they can do? Any gunfight towards the entrance of the apartment means across the hall unit is in line, let alone units to either side.

When it comes to SD out and about, how often do folks typically have time to make sure the space behind the threat is clear? Plenty of stories of LEO engagements with stray rounds being an issue. Not sure which is worse; a stray round harming a bystander, or becoming a casualty because of freezing instead of engaging.

Rust Prevention

Post image
66 Upvotes

Hello, looking for some assistance on what could be causing this rust on some of my firearms parts and some things I can do to prevent it.

Would this just be a result of high humidity in the room? It’s temperature controlled but maybe I need a dehumidifier?

What could apply to prevent it? If anything? I’d initially thought gun lube but applying lube to external parts seemed odd.

Thank you in advance

Edit : won’t let me post more than one picture. It’s happening on my A2 FSB sight as well as the top cocking knob on my MPA defender for a couple examples. This has happened in less than 2-3 months.

Anyone else become way more private about who they shoot with as they got older?

When I first got into shooting I’d pretty much go to the range with anyone who was interested. Coworkers, friends of friends, random people somebody brought along whatever. Over time I’ve gotten a lot more selective. It’s not even really about whether somebody is safe with a firearm because obviously that matters first. It’s more that shooting with someone ends up revealing a surprising amount about your life. They know what you own, where you shoot, sometimes where you live, when you’re out of town, who your friends are etc.

One of the older guys I shoot with is almost comically private about it. He has a small group of people he’s known forever, organizes everything directly and barely uses social media. Half the group talks through Signal a few of them use Kibu and nobody posts pictures until everyone’s okay with it. Ten years ago I probably would’ve thought that was paranoid. Now I kind of get it.

Has anyone else gotten more selective about their shooting circle over time or do you not really think about the privacy side of it?

Smith and Wesson 5906

Hey everyone, I picked up a 5906 today for $415. Seemed like a pretty cool deal. It seems well maintained, but there is a “ding”, or blemish, that has been bothering me. Will this be a function problem down the road, or is this simply a normal cosmetic issue with LEO trade ins? I appreciate your help.

Harbor freight sale

Was at harbor freight picking up some stuff and saw these were on sale. Decided to pick one up to put on this Kimber TLE custom RL ii. This pistol recently broke a surefire X300U-B. Let’s see how she holds up. I think this looks cool despite being a bargain bin light. Quality seems solid. I actually like the finish more than an actual stream light. $37 for harbor freight members and $45 for non members

Federal agreed to take back defective 10mm ammo, then basically stopped responding

I bought three boxes of Federal Premium 10mm Solid Core. Most of the rounds have visible scratches or marks on the primers, and four of the rounds have much deeper gouges.

I contacted Federal directly and they agreed to have the ammunition returned for inspection. They scheduled UPS pickups at my house, but every time UPS showed up, the driver told me there was no shipping label attached to the pickup request, so they could not take the package.

Since then, Federal has basically stopped responding.

I have called them four separate times since last Wednesday. Every time I am told the issue will be forwarded to the product department and that someone will contact me. Nobody has called. Nobody has emailed. The pickup issue still has not been fixed.

At this point, I have three boxes of brand-new ammunition where most of the primers show some kind of scratching, four rounds have deep gouges, Federal already agreed to take the ammunition back, UPS has made multiple failed pickup attempts because of missing paperwork, and I have made four follow-up calls without getting any actual resolution.

I understand that mistakes happen, but repeatedly telling a customer that someone will follow up and then going silent is pretty disappointing, especially when this involves live ammunition that needs to be shipped correctly.

Has anyone else had this kind of experience with Federal's warranty or customer service? Is there a specific department or person I should be asking for?

New Haven 12ga. Ok or needs fixed?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi All,

Reposting because bot..

I inherited this old New Haven 295 bolt-action 12ga. from my late Grandmother years ago and am looking into taking it out hunting again. She used it most of her adult life for hunting and "farm/garden protection" from racoons, possums, skunks, rabbits, birds, etc.

My question is, how do you all feel about this chip missing near the wrist/ along the safety? Everything functions just fine, and she used it for unknown YEARS in this condition. So i'm not worried about light load etc, but I'm looking to take it out pheasant/ turkey/ whitetail hunting this year and wanted people's opinions on if this does have any structural issues/ would feel comfortable shooting slugs through it? Or do I need to look into getting it professionally repaired with pins etc somehow?

EDIT: This is an old, cheap model of off-brand mossberg that actually came with external chokes. I have a full choke original to it for small game/birds, but also have an improved cylinder choke for slugs, so that's not an issue I'm worried about necessarily.

Thank you!
