This one time I was waiting in line to order my coffee at starbucks before going to work. Ahead of me was a very well dressed and good looking dude. The barista was also a very cute young lady and I noticed she kept glancing at the guy as the line moved forward. When he finally came up to order she was taking her time, playing with her hair and trying to make small talk, but the guy was least interested and didnt even make eye contact. And then when I came up to order she was visibly upset and looked at me with disgust and didnt even say a word to me. I wish I had told her that lady it is not my fault that you hate your job and the one cute guy was not interested in you. I too have to get my own coffee and go to a job i hate and deal with an asshole boss

I thought you were gonna say "i wish i was more understanding and supportive because i know what she's going through".

Nope, just a complete lack of empathy.

This comment is wild, a service worker who is paid to do their job is taking out their unhappiness on a customer and you're calling it a lack of empathy.

"taking out their unhappiness" ? she said nothing.

and i'd also guess that OP is over stating what happened to not sound more like a jerk.

If the same thing happened to me as OP described, then yes I would say that person is taking out their unhappiness on me. It's not a crazy statement. And you're just making an assumption based on nothing. It's not like their story is some crazy outlandish thing. Sometimes people are assholes in the moment

Yeah, some people are assholes, like him.

he literally goes out of his way to tell us how he knew she was devastated.

I think this is the crux of the discussion.

While I get where you're coming from, the problem is perspectives come into play. I don't think u/Ballwax is out of line in thinking that, and to some "saying nothing" is a way of venting frustration. There are expected ways to conduct yourself, and to some her literally saying nothing would be viewed poorly. Just like to others you could have a tone, or actually say something rude, and be fine.
