I swear Mamdani just doesn't understand that a politician actually helping their constituents is illegal in this country. At least I assume it is. I can't think of any other reason for things to be this bad.

u/Kazureigh_Black 1d ago

I'm just imagining the absolute storm of garbage people trying their damnedest to snag him into some heavy corruption with bribes or otherwise trying to make sure he stops doing stuff that the average person would consider "good" so he'll fall in line.

22

u/FerusGrim 1d ago edited 1d ago

I firmly believe that most politicians genuinely go into governance expecting that they'll be the exception to the rule of power corrupting. And then a system that grooms men and women to be the best friends and sycophants you've ever seen descend on them, and they've suddenly been corrupted a hundred different ways before they even realize they've committed a crime. And now they're incentivized to not ruin their lives, and now people have leverage on them. And the only way to win that game is to become the person who holds the leverage.

Unless you refuse to play: public pressure, a base that isn't donor-dependent, and transparency. It's the only way this system works for the people. So of course [those who profit from that game] hate Mamdani. If he didn't have enemies, he'd just be another piece.

u/NewryBenson 21h ago

The only way to stay above it is to remain hyper clean. The moment you slip once they got you.

3

u/Double_Look_5715 7h ago

Or just fuckin own your mistakes so they can't control you

1

u/NewryBenson 6h ago

This is probably the right answer, but they attacked Harris for her laugh and Obama for his tan suit, if they got anything mildly incriminating your voters will eat that up. If tomorrow it is revealed mamdani committed minor tax evasion once in 2008, no matter how little that actually matters for his capacity now, they will use it to prove his untrustworthyness.

9

u/BramblinGhostWeed 1d ago

See, I'm too hard to bribe...buit too easy to blackmail

Please do not vote for me. I will not help you, and I will not get rich.

It's a lose-lose situation.

4

u/Capraos 23h ago edited 23h ago

Honestly, I'm excited for more millennial and gen z peeps getting into power. We aren't ashamed of eff all and blackmailing us is damn near impossible. Yeah bitch, that was me behind the Wendy's dumpster snorting 8 balls, eating chicken nuggies, in a Pickachu onsie, high as a mother f@cking kite on acid, listening to the my little pony theme song, screaming f@ck Israel, and having a train run on them by random strangers. What of it?

5

u/ThatJoshGuy327 22h ago

Finally a relatable candidate.

3

u/Scaalpel 20h ago

That's when the secret third option comes out (coercion by threats of violence)

2

u/OkProfessor6810 20h ago

As a 50 y/o woman, that candidate would get my vote, ngl.

2

u/ohtrueyeahnah 19h ago

When tf did Wendys start selling chicken nuggets?

1

u/Andreas1120 1h ago

He runs NYC, NYC is corrupt. If he does construction he has to make a deal with criminals. Just the way it is.

24

u/M086 1d ago

The socialism destroying the country has never been an actual fear of the GOP, but it made for a great boogeyman to scare the rubes.

They’re scared these types of policies, unobstructed will actually work. That’s why Mamdani scares them.

25

u/Oberon_Swanson 1d ago

The way I see it, Socialism making life better for everyone does 'destroy the country' for Republicans, even if they are 100% included as being people whose lives get better in every measurable metric and they know it.

Because inequality is the whole point of "the country." Owning slaves was the point of the Confederacy, and losing the Civil War only meant that they lost the war, not that they changed their minds. And those "good old fashioned conservative values" have been taught to them like a religion. It's easy to think of it as the ancient past but it was two lifetimes ago that these same people were willing to kill and die in a losing war because their egos mattered more than anything else.

That is why no argument about things like socialized medicine being best for everyone can get them to like it. It's not that they don't believe it. It's that they don't want that.

Health care is SUPPOSED to be better if you are wealthy and privileged.

Public transportation is SUPPOSED to be worse than being rich enough to own your own vehicle.

The joy of having children if you so choose is SUPPOSED to be out of reach for "the others."

Owning your own home is SUPPOSED to be out of reach for the others. If everyone has it, it's not a "flex."

Law enforcement is SUPPOSED to protect the privileged, and harass, imprison, terrorize, and kill "the others."

That's what the country is for. For them to power trip. They aren't winning if they aren't beating anybody. Society must have losers. The more they have, the worse they lose, the better the 'winners' get to feel. You're not tall if nobody is short. You're not strong if nobody is weak. You're not better if nobody is worse.

Taking that away destroys the country to them. That is why socialism, equality, anything of the sort, MUST be opposed tooth and nail at all times.

6

u/ThisDoesntSeemSafe 1d ago

That and he's Muslim. They straight up blame him for 9/11... somehow.

1

u/Lailowla 1d ago

They’re scared these types of policies, unobstructed will actually work. That’s why Mamdani scares them.

I mean... simplification and removal of regulations is not exactly something republicans tend to oppose.

I get what you're saying but this is not that lol

1

u/sams_fish 21h ago

Australian here, I had a broncoscopy about 3 weeks ago, 5 hours in hospital, anesthesia, procedure, recovery, cost $0.00. my annual contribution to the socialist system for health care is about $3800

2

u/M086 20h ago

American here. No healthcare whatsoever, I’m probably gonna die of something that should have caught and preventable because I can’t afford doctor’s or hospitals, let alone a colonoscopy.

1

u/sams_fish 20h ago

That's really sad, hope you are doing well

2

u/M086 20h ago

I’m healthy. But when the inevitable happens, whether is sickness or breaking my leg. I’m pretty much fucked.

2

u/scipio0421 20h ago

American here, I have Medicaid (government healthcare for those below the poverty line), without it I wouldn't have been able to get a very necessary shunt revision for hydrocephalus back in June. My symptoms would've kept getting worse until it killed me. Most Americans don't qualify for Medicaid though, and they just made it even harder to qualify, starting on January first.

12

u/Tinre 1d ago

My monopoly on ice cream empire is under siege.

7

u/iam_Mr_McGibblets 1d ago

It's like from semi-pro where they blew a whistle on the alley-oop because it just was so good it had to be illegal haha

2

u/fury420 1d ago

One of the details that often seems to get missed is that Mamdani is able to get so much done because he's backed by a NYC city council that barely has any Republicans, just 10%.

2

u/MajorEconomist2956 14h ago

Maybe they should make it illegal, since they constantly want to break their own laws. Almost like reverse psychology.

1

u/squngy 22h ago

It isn't illegal, but it also isn't really part of the job.

The job is just a combination of getting elected and getting funding.
Helping constituents is just one of the ways that you can try to do the former, but demonizing the opposition also works and is easier.

292

u/MosquitoValentine_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

Some guy just fell to his knees crying in a WV Walmart because the mayor of New York City is ruining his life.

90

u/MrBearMarshall 1d ago

I think you meant Dollar General. 350 of them vs 44.

23

u/thisisredlitre 1d ago

His county probably has a dollar tree in the same address

14

u/MrBearMarshall 1d ago

More like family dollar. Dollar Trees aren't as numerous here.

28

u/tomocleirighsimp424 1d ago

My closet maga uncle just moved out of nyc and claims to not like Mamdani. He says he didn’t move out because of Mamdani and that he just got a new job, but he totally did.

22

u/MiltonManners 1d ago

Your uncle probably hates the free day care for 2 and 3 year olds. Socialism!

5

u/Real-Extension-1357 20h ago

If he moved away because of Mamdani, that would actually be commendable because the amount of jackasses that threatened to leave the city if he won but to this day have not have really annoyed the shit out of me. Looking at you especially John Catsimatidis, piece of shit.

The more of these people leaving, the better imo.

12

u/ZedisonSamZ 1d ago

Hold up now. They wouldn’t fall to their knees- that’s too much weight on the joints!

Worse. My coworker down here in the midwest who has 0 ties to NYC will be shaking angry telling me how Mamdani 'will have bankrupted the NYC icecream business by 2027' or whatever stupid ass claim he read on an AI Facebook post headline.

3

u/Ok-Ranger-4518 13h ago

This is true, you can hear it all the way out in Oklahoma

75

u/digitalbullet36 1d ago

18

u/iam_Mr_McGibblets 1d ago

Seriously though, would this start a trend of politicians actually doing their job and serving their constituents? One can certainly hope

12

u/burritosandbeer 1d ago

It does if people like you who enjoy this type of stuff get involved in organizing

3

u/iam_Mr_McGibblets 1d ago

Hey if it'll get my mayor or governor fix and clean up the city, I'll drive them over myself

3

u/Mysterious_Film_6397 1d ago

Organizing vans or busses for people who don’t have transportation on voting day is fairly common

2

I'm not from NY or NYC. Still my mayor.

1

He's America's mayor. ā¤ļø

u/Give_Us_TASM_3 1d ago

I’ve yet to hear about any ā€œSharia Lawā€ being put in place in NYC that conservatives were whining about 🤷

40

u/Smodphan 1d ago

No, no. This is Sharia law. Ice cream businesses for the masses is Islamic style communism. Everyone write that down when the question gets aimed at Mamdani for the midterms in multiple states.

9

u/OmegaCDXX 1d ago

Republicans are going to start making Ice Cream from pig milk just to spite the libs

8

"Pig milk" is actually the name of my metal band lol

Probably bull milk

u/pyragyrite 1d ago

What I love about this guy is that he aims for easy fruit and grabs it. If any politician R or D just looked for stuff that 70+% of their constituents like and work for it, the country would be so much better.

18

u/Unfair_Explanation53 1d ago

Well that's the actual point of why people like him.

Lots of these issues can literally just be sorted out.

But nobody does

3

u/nomoreimfull 21h ago

Until now.

This is the hero we need.

34

u/Lanky_Boat2276 1d ago

What a libertarian thing to do! It's almost like all of these labels are meaningless and good governance rises above all of the name calling and labeling. Wish this guy could run for President.

5

u/HotSauceHigh 1d ago

Hell max his 8 years as NYC mayor, then do 8 as president, then 8 more as NYC mayorĀ

7

u/SQUIGWERG 1d ago

He can't be president. He was born in Uganda.

4

u/cisnotation 1d ago

Once his 8 years are up in NYC he can come be mayor of Chicago

2

u/WetDreaminOfParadise 18h ago

1

u/cisnotation 15h ago

I’ll throw down, we have Brandon 🤮, at least yall have Wu,.

2

u/WetDreaminOfParadise 15h ago

Idk anything about Brandon, and you’re probably right he’s worse, but Wu has turned into such a disappointment. One of her top aids for bicycle infrastructure died the other month, she came out and said she was gonna finally do something about it, and has only continued to go back on her words for better bike infrastructure.

1

u/Scaalpel 20h ago

The concept of efficient bureaucracy is libertarian now?

26

7

u/Healthy_Razzmatazz38 1d ago

7

u/Money_Cost_2213 1d ago

Oh I know! I wasnt joking. Lol. New comers to the ice cream scene are in for a rude awakening.

3

u/Lailowla 1d ago

This doesn't affect them at all. It's just removing redundant requirements for places that already have food service permits to not have to get separate, special ones for ice cream.

This helps like a burger joint that wants to add soft serve to their menu, that kind of thing.

1

u/forlornjackalope 1d ago

That would be a romp of a film premise.

A college kid starts a shaved ice or ice cream truck business to pay for their tuition, and they cause a metaphorical Cold War in the boroughs that they had no idea either existed at all or thought only existed on TV. It's up to their childhood friends, a group of middle school kids out on summer vacation, and the former owner of the oldest surviving ice cream parlor in the area to unite to vendors - because just like an array of toppings on a sundae, everything is better when there's more of us together!

2

u/ADDystopia 1d ago

Directed by Werner Herzog.

1

u/forlornjackalope 1d ago

Produced by Ari Aster. With music by Daniel Pemberton. This summer, if you can't take the heat, make like a banana and split!

3

u/_WEND1G0_ 1d ago

Things should cool down when they break out the ice cream though!

20

Why is my Mayor, Mattie Parker, in Fort Worth, Texas not doing shit for us! Mamdani has done it all in record timing.

Stupid Mercy Cult. Nate Schatzline should be in jail for the spread of measles across the nation. Any death related to measles, is on Mercy Cult and Nate.

1

u/stilldebugging 15h ago

To be fair, there are a lot of issues in NYC that don’t really exist in other places. You probably can already sell ice cream with a regular food vendors license and don’t need a separate frozen desserts license there.

2

I mean, aside from preventing the closure of all but one FQHC in your state. Looking at you, California. Vote no in Prop 44. It's estimated to have exactly one surviving clinic after 4 years. Just 4 years to undo the legacy of the Black Panthers and Rainbow Coalition for the entire state. That's insanity.

4

u/Ok_Drag5089 1d ago

Can someone explain what he did exactly? I want to have ammo to rub it in my MAGA coworkers faces.

10

u/DarthHubcap 1d ago

There was an additional ā€œfrozen dessert permitā€ required on top of the normal food permit. His office eliminated the redundancy.

16

u/Ok_Drag5089 1d ago

So, making it cheaper and easier for people to sell ice cream.

What an awful communist. I mean it. He's terrible at communism.

Pretty decent free market move though.

Edit... thanks.

5

u/IntlPartyKing 1d ago

...and the normal food permit requirements have grown to cover the requirements of the frozen dessert permit, so it was no longer needed

3

u/Ok_Drag5089 1d ago

Perfect. So becoming more friendly towards small business. The American dream. Wow.

11

u/Large-Assignment9320 1d ago

My standard way of evaluating any politician is to just see if they left their domain better than when they entered, But I mean, will he end 100k hotdog permit to let capitalism take over? I might actually visit that city,

4

u/bit_pusher 1d ago

Isn't the problem that the number of permits is capped, not the actual cost of the permits?

2

u/IntlPartyKing 1d ago

yes...isn't the "$100K" cost (and something similarly outrageous for taxi permits) only the cost on the secondary market?

1

u/jeff61813 1d ago

I mean if it's a hot dog stand, it's a permit to go on some of the most expensive real estate in the world. Land in New York City. Which is owned by the city. a parking space in New York is about $5 an hour. So if you assume someone selling hot dogs 8 hours a day every day of the year potentially that's about $15,000 a year and they under price parking to incentivize Commerce Even though public transport would probably be better, but car people have their own Lobby.

3

u/CurlOfTheBurl11 1d ago

It's pretty funny how in less than a year, he has put just about every previous mayor to shame.

4

u/Sea-Sir2754 1d ago

This is how you do deregulation. You get rid of the things that don't make sense anymore. You don't commit to slashing an arbitrary % of all regulations and then get rid of the good ones just to meet a quota.

1

u/partlysettledin21220 1d ago

They got rid of the good ones to get payouts from their pals.

4

u/PotentialConcert6249 22h ago

Can we duplicate Zohran Mamdani somehow? One for each city, to be the mayor.

4

u/penny-wise 21h ago

It’s funny how we act like Mamdani is the exception when it’s like can’t every politician do stuff like this? Oh, yeah, most of them are owned by corporations or wealthy sociopaths.

3

u/nerdslife1864 1d ago

Elect on New York’s footsteps and you can have it too.

3

u/VictorManville 1d ago

Eliminating regulations? That doesn't sound very Socialist.

3

u/Maleficent-War-8429 1d ago

You know I dont particularly like left wing politicians, or indeed politicians in general, but this guy does seem like the only politician who actually seems to be doing shit.

Maybe its just good PR or whatever, but it certainly seems like he's doing pretty good to me.

3

u/Eliokyn 21h ago

revolutionary, outstanding

4

u/Israel_Azkanbe 1d ago

That’s a very non-socialist thing to do, but it’s a good thing. I’m proud of him

8

u/BraxbroWasTaken 1d ago

Eh? Fixing permitting requirements isn’t really socialist or not, it’s just good governance. By my understanding, he didn’t remove the permit entirely, just loosened an outdated requirement.

1

u/Extreme_Wish_553 1d ago

Someone explained in another thread that is was something like the ice cream permit and the food permit were different. So if you sold both ice cream and other food, you actually needed two different permits. My understanding is that he redid the permits so someone in that situation only needs a single permit.

1

u/IntlPartyKing 1d ago

the food permit requirements had grown to cover the requirements of the ice cream permit, so its requirements were redundant

1

u/Every_Application_26 1d ago

It is deregulation allowing ice cream businesses to do their thing. I agree it is good policy but it usually isn't what socialists stand for. But I also think people use socialism now so vaguely that is hardly has any ties to the socialist authors.

3

u/BraxbroWasTaken 1d ago

Eh? It doesn’t seem to hold any alignment either for or against socialist goals. It’s not like socialism is ā€œgovernment owns everythingā€ inherently, no?

→ More replies (12)

1

u/Connect_Name3362 13h ago edited 13h ago

It's far from deregulation. He didn't rule that you can now serve ice cream from raw milk, corporations can rip us off with impunity or any other right wing nonsense. He made a sensible administrative decision that made all his constituents' lives better, which is as socialist as it gets.

2

u/Biscuits4u2 1d ago

Now watch the evil plot to poison random ice cream to make this guy look bad unfold

2

u/Deep-Cow9907 1d ago

Yeah why can't places like Indiana have someone like him

2

u/KhabaLox 1d ago

Well, I know where the FDA is going to schedule the next outbreak of something we've never heard of before.

2

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 22h ago

So they say every regulation is written in blood.

So who died from ice cream?

Or was it some dumb shit like "city assemblyman Baskin and Mayor Robbins are implementing this new ice cream permit requirement to protect the children!" I hate that my brain goes straight to corruption first nowadays in matters of complex bullshit.

3

u/Contundo 11h ago

Milk products like soft serve and to a lesser degree ice cream, used to have serious poisoning risks.

3

u/2_short_Plancks 6h ago

From what I've read, it was:

  • Ice cream products have food safety issues
  • Specific laws are introduced to deal with that
  • Over time, general food safety improves; also more general food safety laws are added which cover ice cream anyway
  • Ice cream is now over-regulated
  • People complain about how silly the over-regulation is but no one does anything about it
  • Mamdani comes in and is just like "can't we just remove the outdated law now it's no longer necessary"
  • Everyone goes all shocked Pikachu, as though this wasn't just the thing someone should have done previously

1

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 6h ago

Haha, yep that tracks. Ice cream frequently has eggs in it, too. Seems like a city-based health department that's now handled by state and federal institutions.

2

u/get_outta_my_sandwic 12h ago

It probably wasn’t straight up death but definitely a measure to control food safety mixed in with some monopolistic practices

2

u/JDHgtr 11h ago

1

u/Deadsh0t2424 2h ago

The people? šŸ˜‚ And what happens if you put an unstable person in power and there’s absolutely no one to oppose him? Please give me an example anywhere in the world where communist policies benefitted the people.

1

u/JDHgtr 2h ago

How about power to the workers? I think that much of what we've seen is that unchecked power leads to a lot of destruction. But, I also think there has been much we don't really know. So, I should just keep my mouth shut. Capitalism, as we've been told, doesn't work.

1

u/randomwanderingsd 1h ago

Just curious, what do you think happens when we put an unstable person in power of a capitalist nation with no one to oppose him?

1

u/get_outta_my_sandwic 12h ago

What do you mean?! This is clearly the totally scary idea of the workers owning the means of production!!! They’re going to be able to make ice cream with out an ice cream loicense and that ain’t quite right innit?!

2

Good deal. I think the government creating regulations under the guise of saftey, is more than often, a mechanism to limit competition, and to better monitor potential tax revenue.

All this does is limit lower class financial mobility. And creates unnatural barriers to earning money.

this move doesn't even impact safety, since the requirements of the general food permit have grown, and now cover the requirements of the ice cream permit

1

u/chronobahn 22h ago

Yeah for sure. It’s removing an unnecessary boundary. Making it easier to sell Ice cream.

And we agree. No saftey is being sacrificed here. The barrier here, was an unnecessary red tape saftey standard.

Truly taking the old city on a hill proverb to heart. I only hope people are still able to look up and see what's possible.

I’ve never seen this type of Sharia Law.

1

u/get_outta_my_sandwic 12h ago

I think this is actually Shakira law like the one that republicans fear

1

u/Solar_Tides 17h ago

That's certainly one way of looking at it. I see a backwards city getting up to speed with the rest of the country

1

u/aZnRice99 16h ago

Now do that with the outdated food cart permits

1

u/luckygingercat 16h ago

I wish I still lived in NYC.

1

u/No_Strawberry_9064 16h ago

About time, the prices of ice cream trucks are out of control, specially because they have no competition, can't wait to see a paletero pushing a hand cart

1

u/Violet_Sadie_Cat 15h ago

I had the misfortune of having to listen to fox news when I was in the car with my republican uncle, and they keep talking shit about Mamdani, but like we live in California, why do we even care about NYC's politics one way or another. It's just so ridiculous how terrified the right is of him.

1

u/idk_lol_kek 15h ago

Ah yes, ice cream will fix all of NYC's problems.
