In Kennesaw GA, there's a law that every head of household has to have a gun. It is not enforced, nor has anyone ever been cited or arrested for not having a firearm. The law was passed in 1982 as a political response to other cities or towns banning guns.

123

u/gucknbuck 3h ago

How does that affect felons living alone?

142

u/austinh1999 3h ago

There is an exception for felons, those with mental illnesses, those that cant afford it, or those who object to firearms

144

u/IT_Chef 3h ago

Soooo...more or less not enforceable?

83

u/FewHorror1019 3h ago

They carve out literally anyone who can’t or doesn’t want one

"You are legally required to have a gun, if that's OK with you"

How many guns did that guy own?

Performative legislation.

u/heyitscory 1h ago

Follow this law! Unless you can't or don't feel like it.

It's impressive how reasonable-by-comparison the ridiculous Republican party was before 40 years of Reaganomics.

The blind?

16

That's the best part! They can't live in your town legally!

8

u/gayscout 3h ago

This is brilliant! Every town should have the same law! /s

u/UncomfortableTacoBoy 3h ago

Does the town provide a gun if you cant afford one?

No. By law you have to murder a drifter and steal his. The law has certainly had unforeseeable ramifications.

•

u/Plane-Tie6392 56m ago

Well up until a decade ago you probably could have gotten borrowed one from one guy who lived there who had over 120 guns. But he's in prison now for a mass shooting that killed 4 and paralyzed another guy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penske_office_shooting

4

u/kstargate-425 3h ago

Yeah the town I grew up in still has one that says Horses can't be left unattended in the street. I'd bet there are a ton of old laws on the books in almost every town but people just don't know much about them

•

u/Bunyip_Bluegum 57m ago

If the law isn’t causing problems you may as well keep it. Anyway I’m sure no one wants unattended horses in the street, your home town is prepared if it ever happens.

Denver, USA. It’s illegal to have expired tags on your license plate but you will never get pulled over for it.

71

u/palmfronds303 3h ago

Also Denver, running red lights

41

u/Various_Range2259 1h ago edited 1h ago

Holy shit you aren't kidding.

I was visiting family in Denver and I stopped at a light that would have been red even if I'd sped up.

The car behind me honked, passed on a double yellow, and ran the light. Y'all are wild

•

u/slappy_mcslapenstein 25m ago

I belive it. I lived in Colorado for 25 years. Colorado drivers are terrible. When I moved to Arizona everyone always talked about how bad the drivers are but they're better than Denver by a long shot. I've never had an issue changing lanes in Arizona. In Colorado people seemed like they were actively trying to prevent people from being able to change lanes.

In New Mexico, you don't even need a license plate. I see multiple cars every day driving around with no plates never getting pulled over.

32

u/jeffykins 2h ago

That's actually crazy to me

•

u/Cranks_No_Start 22m ago

If you look at the cars in NM not having a plate is the least of the issues.

I got a truck that threw an emissions error right after I bought it. I was not particularly handy with diagnosing car issues at the time. I procrastinated and passed my 30 day limit. I drove that truck around for 3 months without plates. never even a hint at being pulled over.

I'd also drive like 60 miles twice a week to try and fix the issue. I'd replace a sensor, reset the check engine light, drive to laguna pueblo, buy bread drive back, pray the light didnt turn on so I could hwad straight to emissions.

I chased things down for months. turned out to be some crushable metal washers between the exhaust pipes.

anyway, no one in NM cares at all if you're driving around without plates

8

u/Livy1013 2h ago

Same in WA. Hell you can drive without a plate and it wont be looked at

4

u/lavendermermaid1 2h ago

They did NOT change it, but they looked into making it a secondary offense. You can be pulled over for it, but there are so many that it's impossible to get all of them.

The ones without a license plate, they might have a temp plate in a window you can't see right off the bat. That's also a "they just can't catch them all and have to prioritize other things" situation.

California CHP will b line across 3 lanes of freeway to get your ass for 3 week expired tags.

10

u/McGeeze 1h ago

I got pulled over by the CHP for expired tags. I told him I paid but hadn't received them yet. The officer was legit disappointed after he called it in and was told that I was telling the truth.

2

u/tyderian 1h ago

Don't you get a receipt or a temporary copy you can keep until the permanent one arrives?

6

Same in Houston, TX. I had 2024 tags on my car until earlier this month. I got stopped because the cop was looking for drunk drivers and just running all the tags he saw. Once he realized I was sober he didn't even want to deal with me anymore and was super apologetic.

5

u/Far-Rate-3400 1h ago

So basically the law exists, but everyone collectively decided it’s not worth the hassle. That’s honestly kind of hilarious.

Window tint of any shade on front side windows. Illegal where I live but they do absolutely nothing about it ever.

We currenrly have 4 vehicles that all have front tint. No issues ever in over 25 years.

64

u/Bodefosho 3h ago

I assume they’d tack it onto another ticket but won’t bother to ticket you just for tint.

36

u/TCollier31 3h ago

That's what they do around me. They won't specifically pull you over for tint, but they will use it as an excuse to pull you over and/or tack it onto another offence.

2

u/ChaosStAnarchy 1h ago

I had a cop come into my work to ask if he could check the tint on my windows. The joys of small towns.

Jaywalking in NYC. Literally everyone does it.

I moved here from Ohio where my mom taught me to wait for the little white man. First day in Manhattan I stood there waiting while like 30 people just walked across 6 lanes of traffic against the light. I was standing alone like an idiot.

Now I don't even look. The cops are literally jaywalking WITH you. If you actually wait for the signal in NYC, people will walk around you like you're lost.

21

u/zip_zap_tip_tap 2h ago

Fun fact but jaywalking has been decriminalized in nyc for the last year or so

8

u/FettyWhopper 2h ago

A cop waved me across to jaywalk in Boston years ago, haven’t waited for a car to pass since.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Smelly_God 2h ago

We changed the laws here in Cali back in 2023 to *allow* jaywalking as long as it's not being done in a hazardous manner. Like, as long as you're not walking into traffic/creating chance for collision, cops can't stop you for jaywalking.

This can depend on where you live, what car you are driving, how old you are, and how much melanin you have.

I know several people who have been pulled over more than once, and others who have never been hassled, all in the same area.

18

u/rutherfraud1876 2h ago

If the tint is high enough they can't tell your tint

22

u/conlmaggot 3h ago

I always work under the assumption that any cop will ruin your day if you give them an excuse. Hence I try to fly under their radar as much as possible.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/colorblind-and 3h ago

It's one of those things that cops only pull you over for if they seen you as suspicious but don't have a legitimate reason. Or sometimes if they are just bored and want to harass someone

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Jamjams2016 2h ago

I got in trouble for this. I was speeding. Cop pulled me over and said I had an illegal inspection fue to the tint. He could impound my car. He ended up giving my 9 months pregnant self a fix it ticket. When I went to court with my newborn and the fixed vehicle the judge joked about taking my baby away.

So, yeah. It was actually the most ridiculous thing ever for a low end car I purchased with tint barely too dark. Like the most, cheap, basic, bland car you can imagine a young mother owning to be harrassed by a bunch of psycho men.

3

u/SACK_HUFFER 2h ago

You bought the car used and it came tinted? I’d be pissed to get that ticket

5

u/Jamjams2016 2h ago

Yes, I did. And I owned it for years with no issue.I actually didn't know it was too dark because it consistently passed inspections.

The cop and the judge were sickos and I'll never forgot how they treated me.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/mu1ti6rain 3h ago

Where I live they only give you a ticket for it if they pull you over for something else like speeding.

3

u/Tight_Snow_2540 3h ago

Not here. I've got a few of those over the years. Never even a mention of the tint.

5

u/ernyc3777 2h ago

It’s illegal here in NY. I hear it’s used as probable cause to stop in traffic and see what they can find to execute or get permission to search.

A former coworker of mine got it tacked on when he was pulled over and brought to the station for no license, no insurance, and no registration.

It was just a fix it ticket though with a longer than 24 hour window.

5

u/Voxicles 2h ago

A billion years ago I lived in a rougher neighborhood in San Diego. We had a car that we bought from a neighbor at a discount because we were desperate for a vehicle. It had hella dark tinted front windows. Whenever I’d pull into my part of town I’d roll the windows down so that the cops could see I was white 😬

u/rentedlife 3h ago

We’re supposed to have a front license plate (California) and a lot of cars don’t. Mine doesn’t.

43

u/zap_p25 3h ago

Last time I bought a new car I had argue with the finance department over the cost of a front license plate holder. They had it itemized on the paperwork with the cost. Eventually I got them to waive the cost after telling them to delete it which they legally couldn't do (required equipment, dealer can't legally sell a new vehicle with out a front license plate holder in this state).

22

u/Deshes011 3h ago

New Jersey, same thing. The Teslas almost never have the front plate

15

u/DeaddyRuxpin 2h ago

NJ cops have basically stopped enforcing it. Apparently judges side with the driver too often when the driver claims there was no where to put it because the dealer didn’t install the front mount. So cops have given up stopping people for it. They pretty much only use it to tack on to a stop done for some other reason.

Same with window tint. Not supposed to tint fronts or windshield, very rarely hear about tickets for it.

6

u/Lordrandall 2h ago

I’ve been pulled over for no front plate in CA. I bought a car in TX with no front plate and a bored officer pulled me over and gave me a fixit ticket.

3

u/redev 3h ago

Also CA: The only time I ever had anything happen for it was a parking ticket as an added-on fee. And it wasn't even a fix-it ticket, just a fine from the city (Manhattan Beach).

Left lane cruising while passing NOBODY.....

69

u/Mustard_Icecream 3h ago edited 3h ago

Oh somebody's passing me? Let me speed up temporarily so they can't pass then slow back down to 5 under the speed limit.

34

u/communityneedle 3h ago

I know that guy. Also that guy's asshole brother, who will tearass past you 40 mph faster than your speed, only to get in front of you and immediately slow down to 10 mph slower than you.

13

u/BarrioVen 2h ago

This. So bad in Oregon. It’s bad other places too, but at least everywhere else people are doing at least 75. Not so much in Oregon. Everyone is driving 60.1 mph, which is as fast as that truck in the left lane is driving while he tries to pass another truck doing 60. Oh, and Oregon hates to add lanes, so all of I-5 is two lanes each direction for almost the length of the state.

7

u/tictachashtag 2h ago

Especially noticeable when trying to get to Florence from Eugene. Stuck behind someone doing 50 for awhile, passing lane finally opens up and now they want to do 75 when you try and pass.

5

u/hhokema 2h ago

Agreed, Oregon has under invested in its road infrastructure.

Their passing lanes on two lane highways are about 60 seconds long. Barely long enough for one vehicle to pass the slow poke that isn't so slow anymore. Never mind the 5 other cars that would like to pass also.

On long stretches of these highways they have enough space to add another lane or two for many miles.

3

u/BarrioVen 2h ago

Usually when I say something about Oregon roads I get downvoted or everyone pipes up that our public transit is what needs improvement because cars are evil or something. Like a high speed rail from Salem to Ontario is going to make sense. Let’s just fix the roads. I drive 20 and 22 a lot, and while it’s fits my schedule I like to leave at 3 or 4 in the morning. Nothing but me and a couple logs trucks usually.

2

u/JoeeyMKT 1h ago

State-dependent. It's completely legal to do this in California. You just have to move over to the right if someone is going faster than you in your lane, so you can let them pass. Otherwise, you can left lane camp to your heart's desire (and the road is probably busy enough that you're passing people on your right anyways).

I feel you. My hometown had the highest rate of drunk driving fatalities in the USA in 2024. Despite the fact that i quite like my dad, I loathe having to go there to visit him. The last 5 years or so, he's just stopped leaving his house at night because it's gotten so bad.

In Memphis - the hardly stop anybody for anything. Yeah, occasionally they will run a speed trap or some such. Maybe set up a drug sting.

I’ve seen people smoking pot in the vehicle right beside me, smoke billowing out, the smell everywhere with a cop sitting right behind them. Nothing happened.

Street takeovers, shutting down intersections drifting, all manner of craziness.

Cops just see and move on.

I drive down Lamar once a week (I’m from the PNW, but have a dedicated long haul route to Olive Branch) and I’ve seen girls selling services right next to a parked cop car 😂

3

u/The_Nepenthe 2h ago

I don't live in Memphis but that sounds pretty similar to the city I live in, worst thing I've noticed is everyone is driving around aggressively and also just poorly because there's no traffic enforcement.

I went to grab something from the store and walked since its and this lady honked and screamed out her window at me to walk when there was a turn signal, not a walk signal and then screamed and honked at me for walking on the walk signal.

Literally had no idea how basic traffic signals works.

It's well known that you can you can drink from an open container in New Orleans, but there is technically an exception for glass bottles.

It's never stopped me from sipping from a High Life while on a walk around the neighborhood though. Just don't do other illegal things at the same time.

I used to l live in the French Quarter and one Friday afternoon as I'm walking down Bourbon I see this young couple hanging out watching a balcony.

He goes to get something from his pocket and hands his beer to the girl just as an NOPD rounds the corner. He takes one look at the girl and says are you 21?

Guy: No she's not, but it's my beer so it's ok.

NOPD: She can't be in possession of alcohol, so I need you to pour the beer out and I'll be in my way .

Guy: (takes back the beer) Look, she's not holding it now, so it's ok.

NOPD: Son, I need you to pour out the beer, that's all.

Guy: But she didn't drink any and it's my beer!

NOPD: I'm going to tell you one more time, pour out the beer out I'm going to arrest you.

Guy: But you don't understand...

NOPD knocks the beer out of his hand, spins him around and cuffs him.

They famously would let Friday arrests sit in jail until Monday morning for arraignment. So this kid completely screwed his weekend, ran up court costs and gets a record for a $5 beer.

Local police here tend to turn a blind eye to "minor teenage shenanigans" as they call it. So, if they smell weed and you're not bothering anyone they will just ignore it, that kind of thing.

21

u/Important_Scene_4295 3h ago

Coasting in neutral. Like shifting to neutral going down a hill. Illegal.

7

u/SaltyBalty98 3h ago

How do they know someone's coasting? Could be geared so the engine isn't under much stress and pressing the brakes with little force.

8

u/Important_Scene_4295 3h ago

10 years enforcing the traffic laws of that state and still don't know. It's on the books though still. My only thought would be if it contributed to a crash and was discovered during the course of the investigation.

3

u/elMurpherino 3h ago

In that instance I feel like it would be super hard to prove the person didn’t just knock it into neutral during the accident tho. What a weird law.

3

u/Mustard_Icecream 3h ago

Like real big hills? The only reason i could see is by not having it in gear, you're not engine braking which would heat up the brakes more. Potentially too much. I know heavy trucks engine brake or jake brake all the time to reduce brake temps.

22

u/Digifiend84 3h ago

Shoplifting. Apparently the cops won't do anything because the value of the stolen goods is usually too low. You might get stopped by a security guard and banned from the shop, but you won't end up bothering the police.

31

u/Spiley_spile 3h ago

Some stores these days collect evidence on repeat shoplifters. They hold onto it until the amount of merchandise equal a certain level of crime. Then they'll have the person arrested.

11

u/haventwonyet 3h ago

Yeah I think it got banned but there was a shoplifting sub that talked about this with Target a lot. That they had amazing cameras, AI, plate readers and people watching them 24/7. They’d let you get away with it until it hit $10,000 or whatever the felony minimum is and then boom, cops on your doorstep with all the evidence in the world. When they started charging for plastic bags I did the math on how many bags I could get away with not declaring at self checkout before the cops showed up at my door. Answer: 142,857. I don’t shop there anymore so I think I’m well below the threshold.

I grew up in Europe. In Europe is normal for cops to stop you for no reason, just bc they don’t like your face on the streets while you walk and ask for your id etc. they’ll search even your underwear and there is nothing you can do.

I was so surprised when I moved to the USA to find out that’s actually illegal here.

60

u/lazy_days_of_summer 3h ago

In the US they just make up a reason like "smelling marijuana".

14

u/bacondev 3h ago edited 2h ago

I think that in some (or most?) states in which cannabis is legal for medicinal use, the smell of cannabis isn't probable cause anymore. If it's fully illegal in the state, then yeah, you have no defense against them making that excuse up.

Edit: It varies state by state as there is no federal mandate on this. Check your state laws if unsure.

4

u/mentholfridgecig 3h ago

Not really. The smell of burnt marijuana is still reason to search as it's illegal to smoke in your car in most states

→ More replies (3)

Literally had my car searched because 2 cops said they smelled marijuana. Of course they didn't find any because I hadn't smoked probably 2 years prior to that point, and my car was only a few months old at the time. When they didn't find anything, one of the cops said "it must be the freshly cut grass that threw off my smell"...

15

u/OhTheHueManatee 3h ago

In the USA this just means they have to come up with an excuse. I was pulled over once for "driving like someone who doesn't want to be pulled over" which is not a crime.

5

u/PartyTraining5491 3h ago

Yes bro but I’m not even talking about operating a vehicle. Imagine you walk on the street and they just stop you.

One time I had 2 motorcycles with 4 cops stop very aggressively in front of me on the sidewalk in Greece and jump from the motorcycle asking for my id and yelling like crazy.

It’s so uncommon to you that you can’t comprehend it with you American brain lol.

8

u/OhTheHueManatee 3h ago

I don't know how bad it is in other places but what you're taking about isn't unheard of in the states. I've had police confront me for "loitering" at a bus stop.

No front plate. In NY State a front and rear plate is required. I have two sports cars that I don’t want to put the front plate on. I’ve had one for 6 years and the other for 2 years. I’ve never been stopped or ticketed parking on the street. I regularly cross the border and the customs officers don’t care either.

2

u/New2ThisThrowaway 1h ago

Same. But I was ticketed for it once. I was pulled over for something else (I missed a "no left turn" sign) and they gave me the plate ticket as a lesser charge.

That just made me want to keep the plate off. Cops are incentivized to write tickets, but the plate ticket is low drama for them and low cost and consequences for the driver.

Exactly as here. I've been pulled over for following the speed limit too well, and for not coming to a complete stop at a yield sign. Neither ended in a ticket. Just 30 minutes time wasted.

4

u/GenZguy1 3h ago

i thought you were suppose to slow down at a yield, not stop at it? wtf

6

u/TotallyNotRocket 3h ago

You have it correct. Slow, proceed if way is clear, stop if it ain't. He just wanted an excuse to run my shit and have a lookie-loo for probable cause.

u/TennisSkirt1628 4h ago

Smoking weed.

If you're super explicit - like... not even trying to hide it when they walk past, then yeah, they might speak to you.

Other than that, even if you make it super obvious that you're hiding something, they look away and turn a blind eye.

21

u/CalmSeasPls 3h ago

A few weeks ago I went for my usual evening “walk”, and about half way through my preroll I stumbled across a situation that necessitated me calling 911 (completely unrelated to me or weed - wellness check for something I saw), and when the cop rolled up to me, I approached his window with the joint still in my hand. I suddenly froze and just kind of awkwardly dropped it hoping he wouldn’t notice. He listens to my report, thanks me and says he’ll take a look, then politely says “pick that up before you leave” and drove off to investigate the safety concern.

Speeding 9 miles over or less. 10 is the legal threshold of a moving violation and it evolves into a much higher financial penalty. No one gets pulled over for less because it's a tiny fee and non-moving violation.

Akin to that, it's illegal to drive in the left lane on the highway unless you're in the act of passing someone in the right lane. People drive in the left lane like assholes, side-by-side with someone going the same speed. I really wish they'd enforce that one because people are obstructing the passing lane while going below the speed limit.

Jaywalking is pretty universal and getting a ticket rarely happens anywhere(except for Poland).

13

u/Artistic_Disater7342 3h ago

Trick or Treating over the age of 12. Allegedly you'll get fined for 300 dollars and its concidered a class 4 misdemeanor if you're trick or treating over the age of 12. (Growing up the age limit was at 10 but they changed it to 12)

19

u/debauchedsage 3h ago

That has to be the dumbest law on the books, considering the sort of shenanigans we got into once my friends and I decided we were too old for trick-or-treating. 🤣

7

u/ThinButton7705 3h ago

Right? Compared to the shit I got up to, taking candy from a stranger was way safer.

2

u/rubiscoisrad 3h ago

And the strangers didn't even throw in drugs or razor blades!

Im not joking but as long you are NOT causing trouble or vandalize homes or prank houses than you're not on the cops radar. Or as long the person doesn't take that law too seriously and snitch.

4

u/Theletterkay 3h ago

So stupid. I dont know a single adult who doesnt happily give teens and even young adults candy if they show up and say trick or treat. Better than them doing drugs or drunk driving or whatever else. I fully support anyone and everyone trick or treating for as long as they want.

2

u/EndoShota 2h ago

I live on a street that doesn't see much foot traffic on Halloween. I earnestly wish more folks would drop by; I love the spirit of trick-or-treating. Kids or adults, it'd hardly matter to me.

I wonder how often people might try to gauge who isn’t home, so they’ll knock on every door to find one to break into. If they get caught scoping it out, they’re “trick or treating”

3

u/rubiscoisrad 3h ago

We're charging 13 year olds with misdemeanors? And who the hell is running around asking random middle schoolers how old they are lol?

2

u/Artistic_Disater7342 3h ago

Either your vandalizing houses and pranking people or if someone takes this law way too damn seriously then someone or a cop will hunt you down

2

u/rubiscoisrad 3h ago

I'm embarrassed to admit how much shit we got into and never got caught. Walking around with a cheap costume and a pillowcase is significantly less harmful!

You would have to do some seriously bad shit to get the cops to drive out to were I live. You also would have to do it between 9-5 or the sheriff's office will be closed for the day.

9

u/barsmart 3h ago

Burning marijuana.

You can buy it, with a license, in my state. But the laws says you can't burn flower. Except the punishment is tied to an old possession law that makes it unenforceable.

So no cop in the state will write you up for burning a joint... Unless you are giving him a big enough reason to do so by being an ass, of course.

sleeping off being drunk in your car. doors locked, keys put away in the glove compartment, and laying down in the back seat to sleep.

yes, it's illegal. but the police would rather see you sleep it off than to drive buzzed or drunk and cause an accident.

Most people may not know this, but in America it's actually illegal to drive faster than the speed limit. It's an upper "limit," not that the police enforce it

It is technically still illegal where I live for an unmarried man and woman to cohabitate. Of course this is a law from 1805 and not enforced, but it's still on the books for some reason.

As a gay man I always thought it was funny that technically my cohabitation with another man was more legal than a straight man and woman before marriage.

Enforcement of law always depends on your rank in the hierarchy of society. So high status people can get away with anything low status people can be punished for existing. Thats why many people pursue social status, because if your high status you can engage in evil predatory extractive stuff and then use the ill gotten gains to get more status. For those who value good and meritocracy the frontier becomes the thing you eventually want as the only place merit tends to be rewarded and predators properly punished is wherever its impossible to impose a hierarchy to abuse your position in.

High status people tend to be awful because the game theory of hierarchical status rewards predators when they get into power and punishes good people.

In Texas, weed, THC-A all that stuff is illegal here. Cops don’t gaf if you smoke it or use it, as long as you aren’t doing it in public or while driving.

7

u/IllegalGeriatricVore 3h ago

Good tbh. Anti weed laws are draconian at this point. The biggest issue is it's usually selectively enforced against poor / minorities

2

u/EndoShota 2h ago

They were always draconian. They were originally designed with the express goal of criminalizing Mexican people.

2

u/ace425 2h ago

Having spent most of my life in Texas I would say this is only true in Austin, Houston, and Dallas. If you get caught with weed in any of the rural areas they’ll come down on you the same as they would any other felony.

Going 4 over. Technically a crime. Practically a suggestion with a sign.

2

u/fullofuckingbears313 1h ago

In Texas, it would be super dark window tint. Technically you can't have more than 20% on the front side windows, but the back windows can be as dark as you want, but you're still not likely to get pulled over for it unless the cop just wants to be a dick or tack it on if you're getting a speeding ticket and they wanna add something else.
