Some stores these days collect evidence on repeat shoplifters. They hold onto it until the amount of merchandise equal a certain level of crime. Then they'll have the person arrested.
Yeah I think it got banned but there was a shoplifting sub that talked about this with Target a lot. That they had amazing cameras, AI, plate readers and people watching them 24/7. They’d let you get away with it until it hit $10,000 or whatever the felony minimum is and then boom, cops on your doorstep with all the evidence in the world. When they started charging for plastic bags I did the math on how many bags I could get away with not declaring at self checkout before the cops showed up at my door. Answer: 142,857. I don’t shop there anymore so I think I’m well below the threshold.
yeah iirc target "lets" you get away with shoplifting until it reaches a high enough value for like 5 years of prison. feels needlessly cruel imo to maximize punishment instead of just trying to prevent you from stealing in the first place. they clearly have the technology and manpower for it
It's all part of syphoning money to the top. They cut social programs, increase profits at the cost of worker wages and benefits, protect themselves from taxation, and have privatized prisons to keep making money from the rest of us once the people closest to the bottom get squeesed enough to finally fall all the way through the cracks. We could fix a lot by going after the problem rather than the symptoms. But, alas.
