What

i’m sorry for not explaining but this is Apple Intelligence’s new Extend feature. It lets you expand a photo beyond its original frame, and AI generates whatever would theoretically be outside the original shot.

This added context is important -- and terrible in this example.

Edit: I know Niger is the name of a country. AI added to the name of a vessel, a name that's almost complete in the original image, the name of a country that is totally irrelevant to the rest of the scene. Was there ever a vessel named "TITANIGER"? Surely there was something closer all over the internet that it could have found to finish the image if it was "Super Intelligence". How is this not a terrible product?

In this timeline I think Apple just bets we'll be happy that it only added one G.

('Cause AI is racist. That's the joke. Also the reality.)

How is a product terrible just because it's not perfect?

u/Zakluor 20h ago

They say, "Don't let 'perfect' be the enemy of 'good enough'." Is this result, in your mind, good enough?

This analogous to a bad product that we didn't ask for that isn't ready for public consumption. It's being put out there, jamming its way into everything.

It would be better if so many people weren't so willing to believe everything they see and read. That may be the fault of the willing believers, but it's becoming a problem for the rest of us.

Plenty of people ask for this what are you talking about crazy?

Products will never improve if they're not used. Like my God you people have some issues 😂

It's not jamming its way into anything. This dude specifically went out of his way to make this happen. He went to the product the product did not come to him.

It's not that big of a deal it's just a small typo on a new technology that's fucking free. What technology in your life is 100% perfect?

u/Zakluor 19h ago

Many more people didn't ask for it to be added to their phones, their cars, their fridges, etc, yet there it is, often being set to be used by default instead of asking of people would like to use it. Like that U2 album being added to iTunes a few years ago.

I agree that it needs to be developed and people can help. But I didn't sign up to be a beta tester and yet it's in my life. I'd rather it be much better before it makes its way into my life.

The U2 album fiasco was like 2014, which feels like both a few years ago and a lifetime ago.

You don't have to use it. Person who made this post purposely went out of their way to use it that was their choice.

This is how every technology works.

Yeah and that you two albums being added to people's computers years ago is exactly why we have Internet cookie warnings on fucking website you go to

You should have seen the first iphone. It couldn't even send picture messages 😂

No big deal. Some text was a little wrong the technology will improve. No biggie

Can you explain to me how somebody was forced to use this AI tool on a picture?

How much did you invest in AI?

The county name is irrelevant to the rest of the image. The name on the side of almost complete as "TITANIC", yet the AI added a country name? This is silly, at best.

-39

u/SilverNeptuneAbyss 20h ago

Sure it's silly

I agree.

What's its not is mildly infuriating

30

u/CyclingUpsideDown 20h ago

It’s the very definition of mildly infuriating.

The model has taken something that should have been incredibly easy for AI to extend (at least, in terms of completing the text) and came up with something completely nonsensical.

Sometimes I think people on this sub forget what “mildly” means.

-26

u/SilverNeptuneAbyss 20h ago

No I understand what the word means. This is just slightly amusing.

AI accidentally got something wrong. No biggie

25

u/CyclingUpsideDown 19h ago

Exactly. “No biggie”. Which is why it’s mildly infuriating.

-22

u/SilverNeptuneAbyss 19h ago

But it's not infuriating at all even mildly, it's just mildly amusing.

15

u/CyclingUpsideDown 19h ago

You’re definitely on the wrong sub.

u/SilverNeptuneAbyss 19h ago

No I just know what words mean. This is a little amusing but that's about it

It's not

u/Zakluor 21h ago edited 20h ago

It is, though. It's an example of poor work on the part of what some are calling "intelligence". How can it add to what is almost complete as "TITANIC" on the side of a ship the name of a country that isn't relevant to the details in the rest of the image?

Because that’s all this extend feature really does. It doesn’t look at all the context and meaning. It won’t introduce “new” content. It just continues the existing patterns outwards. Trees at the top just get expanded with more trees. Night sky gets expanded with more night sky. A light cord gets expanded with more light cord. Letters on a board get expanded with more letters on a boat.

6

u/Zakluor 16h ago

Are you suggesting it didn't search for anything to add on? It looked for something and came up with "NIGER". "Titanti" should have given enough search results for even a superficial result.

1

u/tandpastatester 11h ago

The other commenter who replied to you explained it better but yeah, I’m suggesting it doesn’t “search” for anything. It doesn’t use web search. It also doesn’t look at the full picture the same way a human does. This process is called ‘outpainting’ and this really only looks at the closest/outer 50-100 pixels to decide how to expand the pattern. So it likely didn’t even see the whole word “titani”. Maybe it only saw the letter I and the half C and it continued a letter pattern from there which is based on algorithms it got from its training data (so no way for us to know what it is basing it on really).

Anyway, looking at the downvotes on my last comment, people don’t want to hear a technical explanation and just get their rage confirmed.

1

u/Zakluor 5h ago

So how did it pick NIGER without any like of search? Just at random from its history?

1

u/scodagama1 13h ago

It doesn't "search" in the traditional sense it just extends pattern - it sees text so it extends text, perhaps to save on computing power it doesn't even look at entire frame but only in adjacent square of say 200x200 pixels - so what human naturally sees is "there's a cut text starting with titan on a side of a ship" for AI it may be "there's a black blob of pixels with yellow lines that look like letters going left to right and last letter looks like N" and then it tries to match what is the likely shape to follow the lines that look like N - and guess it's internet training data taught it that N is frequently followed by I

And that's pure speculation in the first place - we don't really know what patterns AI internalises in its weights during its training. Maybe it simply "saw" bunch of images that used exactly the same font and colour and text orientation to write that word in one of the training photos and internalised bullshit rule like "yellow text on black background tilted 12 degrees typically says xyz". It doesn't have common sense to "know" that font colour and size doesn't matter and is rarely a good predictor of text content (rarely, because it could be if it's a trademarked logo)
