Ruined by Technology Got into a dumb 10 minute argument about whether the ACL and Achilles are the same thing or not. My idiot friend forgot to crop his screenshot before sending it to me...🤦

"Does this fake medical info look convincing enough for your screenshot" 🤣

3.5k

u/word_weaver26 Aug 27 '26

"Or do I need to make it sound more severe? Something that makes your friend believe that you are going to heaven in a few months?"

953

u/Ne_zievereir Aug 27 '26

Who the fuck even thinks a screenshot of ChatGPT is convincing? I someone would send something like this, where I'd really "huh?", I would just ask ChatGPT myself, and get the real answer. Does that shit actually work?

875

u/Friendstastegood Aug 27 '26

Also ChatGPT can be wrong about things! It is not a trustworthy or reliable source because it isn't even a source at all! It's just a text generator!

308

u/Ask_bout_PaterNoster Aug 27 '26

mostly this. I'm no expert in ANYTHING, but I've caught LLM's (are they still large language models?) in enough blatant errors and falsehoods about things that I know there's zero reason to believe any information coming from it. Worse, it'll be convincing even when catastrophically wrong.

149

u/thebigaaron Aug 27 '26

And when they’re wrong and you correct them, they’re like oh I’m sorry I won’t do that again, here’s the updated info and they probably changed something else to be wrong

My boss suggested I use ai to do some research. I was trying to find the primary source that defined where we were allowed to to take a test sample from on a steel part. It can be confusing - the customer spec sheet references a spec, that spec references another spec, that spec says that unless specified otherwise you should follow generic rules per some other spec, the generic spec splits things into categories that are a little ambiguous with regards to your current application, etc.

So fuck it, lets see where we get with ai.

"Okay if you're looking for info on producing (very specific part that only a couple companies make) I can certainly help you out! You can do it this way __ based on what it says in ___"

Ok great, where is that stated in the spec?

"Chapter _ page _ of the 2023 spec."

That's an old version, I need the reference from the 2026 spec

"Okay, in the 2026 spec the reference is on page _ instead"

No it's not. I have the book open in front of me.

"Whoops you're absolutely right, in fact the information you're looking for is not in this spec at all, good catch! If you're looking for information about __ try looking in ___"

Jesus christ lmao. So yeah I gave up at that point. The worst part is that it doesn't just tell you when it doesn't know something until you force it. Because it doesn't know anything, it's just regurgitating bullshit because people want a comfy answer whether or not it's correct.

64

u/felisnebulosa Aug 27 '26

Yeah I had a similar experience trying to find a primary source. It just made up a paper in a medical journal. I couldn't find it and when I asked the AI for details it was like "oh well I just made that up to illustrate my point".

20

u/MinuteEdge7225 Aug 27 '26

"The worse part is that it doesn't just tell you when it doesn't know something until you force it."

Saw am interview from an archeologist who pointed out the same thing. The AI isn't applicable to their work because people do not tend to answer questions online with "I don't know "

24

u/morostheSophist Aug 27 '26

That's exactly the problem with AI: it makes shit up. And I don't mean just that it makes things up when it doesn't know; it actually doesn't know anything, and it's just guessing every single time.

LLMs are famous for "hallucinations", but technically, every answer is a hallucination. Every answer is produced with the same predictive algorithm that says "this token should come next". Some of those hallucinations happen to contain accurate information, but they're not coded to say "I don't know". You can browbeat than into saying "I don't know" if you call them out on being wrong enough times, but if you don't do that, they continually try and fail to produce a correct answer.

There are a couple of obscure things I've tried to find multiple times over the years, before and after the advent of modern "AI". LLMs continually give me wrong answers to these queries, verifiably wrong answers. When I say "that's wrong", they simply generate another wrong answer, over and over. Each time the answer sounds plausible; it looks like a correct answer, and will often have references. But when I look deeper, it's a complete fabrication (just like those fake court cases cited in AI-generated legal briefs that have gotten idiot lawyers in deep trouble).

They are still large language models yes

15

u/Stalinbaum Aug 27 '26

They are now transitioning slowly to being LMMs or Large Multi-modal models, in other words instead of interacting with just words/text tokens like LLMs these actually are trained on images, audio, code, and text tokens too

I've literally had ChatGPT tell me you should buy high and sell low in stocks to make money. As like the typical thing to do. Literally goes against all money making sense but I could not get it to break free of it's delusion.

6

u/pornalt4altporn Aug 27 '26

It doesn't matter, they still generate output that fits the statistical distribution they have learned. They don't consult a declarative memory store and retrieve correct information.

Now perhaps someone will invent as way to have them do that, but training bigger neural networks on larger datasets doesn't do that.

6

u/thisusedyet Aug 27 '26

I mean, statistically speaking, it IS the typical thing to do. You just don't make any money off it

I remember one argument I had on Reddit, where someone insisted that Quebec was the only fortified city in Canada, and posted ChatGPT quotes as proof. As someone who once had a summer job involving working in one of the forts that encircled and defended Halifax, I begged to differ.

10

u/VivaZeBull Aug 27 '26

It constantly tells me I am misquoting people … I am not you just don’t know the episode, jerk.

My biggest pissoff was when it was new and google kept telling me that Nancy’s Mom didn’t say ā€œIs Steve your boyfriend now?ā€

Yes she did bitch. Yes she did.

89

u/_Tempi_0 Aug 27 '26

You would fact check a chat gpt screenshot by asking chat gpt yourself? A screenshot of chat gpt isn't convincing because ai will lie to you even without prompting. Why wouldn't you look at actual sources?

39

u/No_Recognition_9354 Aug 27 '26

It also would probably take less than 90 seconds to find a reliable answer to this question from an actual source

27

u/HerculesIsMyDad Aug 27 '26

Do people not just google things anymore? Especially something like this, one google image search will surely bring up an actual anatomy illustration.

This is a person I'd start distancing myself from

3.5k

u/facellama Aug 27 '26

You can't trust anything they say moving forward as they can't stand to look dumb

964

u/thebrassbeldum Aug 27 '26

You can’t trust anything they do either, because they are dumb!

263

u/WriterV Aug 27 '26

I mean, I have friends who are dumb but are self aware about it, and honest when they make mistakes. I wouldn't trust factual information from them, but I would trust their social advice , and/or their intentions.

78

u/WeNotAmBeIs Aug 27 '26

Exactly. People of all intelligence levels can be humble and willing to admit they're incorrect. I can't be friends with someone who is unwilling to admit they are wrong. I personally hate being wrong, but that motivates me to want to learn the truth. To me, pretending you're right after learning you aren't is just being a sore loser. I also can't be friends with sore losers. Of course the venn diagram of sore losers and people unable to admit being wrong is a circle.

22

u/Givemeallthecabbages Aug 27 '26

I'd rather find out that I'm wrong if I'm wrong. How else do we learn? I can't be expected to hold all knowledge of the known universe, so yeah, sometimes I'm wrong.

16

u/Maximum-Cover- Aug 27 '26

I hate being wrong.

So I love it when someone points out to me when I'm wrong.

How else am gonna stop doing it?

10

u/Girthy_Toaster Aug 27 '26

This is why I tell all my employers to please critique me at every opportunity. Now it rarely happens.

4

u/Maximum-Cover- Aug 27 '26

Precisely!

Someone who points out a mistake you're making in a reasonably and calm manner is doing you a favor.

Not attacking you.

It's so much less effort to allow people to be idiots.

Can’t speak for the friend though

u/smytti12 Aug 27 '26

Especially including the bottom part. It honestly is an excellent way to disarm maybe an intense debate and admit you were wrong.

16

u/UnimagineDragons Aug 27 '26

Okay so if it were a joke, what would you do? For me I think it's also a joke possibility and what I would do is screenshot the fake information but also include some sort of evidence that it was fake, so my buddy would know it's a joke or at least know it's not real and I could hit him with the joke. After all, sending a bunch of lies with no indication it's fake and a joke is mean/wrong.

Something just like the OP's picture would be what I sent. Snip of "info" plus the little blip admitting it's fake info.

In other words this is a fucking shitpost and it's a friend sending a joke to another friend. OP got a joke and is selling it on Reddit as serious for reddit points

So, I once mis pronounce the word draught as (drot) the actual pronunciation is (draft). And after being called out by a friend on it I went to Wikipedia and changed the pronunciation and sent him a screenshot, it was immediately changed back but it was pretty funny when he was very confused. 27

It's like "laughter" which is pronounced either lafter or larfter depending on accent.

Draught is similarly either draft or drarft. (Note: "draft" is its own word which people with the latter accent will read as "drarft". Hopefully they can figure out I mean it with an "a" like "ham")

11

u/Ichorous_Allsorts Aug 27 '26

TBF, most 'aught' pronunciations are the awt sound, i.e. gh is silent - caught, daughter, naughty etc, but only a couple are aft sounds, like draught or laughter. Renaissance vowel shifts really messed English up. I tried to pronounce Mercedes as a kid, having only read it, not heard it. I... was not close.

My sister talks about this non-stop.

She teaches AP US History and, over the past couple of years, she gets papers like this CONSTANTLY. She gives students 55s for work like this then parents will read the first couple of paragraphs and come in furious over the grade. She lets the parents scream, picks up the paper, and shows them the end of Chat GPT's response that their "genius" kid couldn't even be bothered to delete.

44

u/wurmsrus Aug 27 '26

why 55 not 0?

73

u/_Handsome_Jim_ Aug 27 '26

That's the lowest grade her district allows her to give.

It's become common for school districts to put a floor, somewhere between 50 and 65, on the lowest grade so it's never really impossible for a student to fail a class. Technically, one of her students could cut every single class, not take a single exam, nor turn in a single assignment and pass her class if the student did well on the AP exam which counts as the final.

60

u/wurmsrus Aug 27 '26

fucking hell, really makes me worry about the future when these kids are grown up and running the world.

u/Draco137WasTaken Aug 27 '26

→ More replies (2)

10

u/duckinasombrero Aug 27 '26

Also I believe around 50 is considered a fail anyway. A zero usually means the assignment was absent, regardless of quality. At least that's how it was when I was young.

4

u/_Handsome_Jim_ Aug 27 '26

I went to a Catholic HS where anything below 75 was failing but 65 and below are commonly failing grades in public schools around me.

The point is that your average can never be so low that it's impossible for you to pass. When I was a student your average would be 0 if you took no exams and turned in no assignments going into your final and it would basically be impossible to pass the class. More commonly today, in that situation, your grad would be anywhere from a 50 to a 65 so a strong performance on a final could potentially let you pass.

ACL: anterior cruciate LIGAMENT

Achilles TENDON

People should really stick to what they know lol

u/no_more_mistake Aug 27 '26

Ankles and knees are so similar though, I kind of get the confusion if they're a toddler who hasn't learned the song yet

Are you sure he's being serious? This is exactly the kind of joke I would do in a situation where I figure I have been wrong.

333

u/Existing_Presence_69 Aug 27 '26

Troll screenshots are an art from a bygone era.

89

u/AbstinentNoMore Aug 27 '26

Younger folks are used to a more sanitized internet and thus easily fall for trolling.

68

u/WillowPtar_Migan Aug 27 '26

I see it so much, where a bunch of people are riled up by extremely obvious bait.

I've seen hundreds of comments long threads about that screenshot of a post from The Flat Earth Society, a satire Facebook page, that says "The Flat Earth Society has members all around the globe." Pretty much all of the commenters are always making fun of the supposed idiot flat earthers like it's a serious post.

Sometimes, you just gotta laugh along with the troll.

There is a difference with lame trolling and creating sarcasm thou. Too often people mix those concepts and pretend that Alanis Morissette was wrong about it.

I was thinking the same thing. I could easily see myself making this joke after learning I'm wrong about something

182

u/ItsSansom Aug 27 '26

If it's a joke: Hilarious, I love it, flawless execution.

If it's serious: Jesus fucking Christ...

93

u/Blieven Aug 27 '26

That was my guess as well. It seems too perfectly dumb to not be intentional.

I once "forgot" to crop out my bookmark named "SpongeBob erotic fanfiction"; either he didn't notice, or he posted on Reddit about my weird tastes.

This is the lesson of the past 10 years to the populace:

Never admit being wrong.

Always double down.

Your ignorance is just as good as anyone else’s knowledge.

To admit fallibility is weakness.

Weakness is for losers.

You aren’t a loser, are ya? Hold your head high you’re a big strong Alpha male!

12

u/OccludedFug Aug 27 '26

Snort.

If only there was a way to distinguish the anterior cruciate LIGAMENT (ligaments connect bone to bone)
from the Achilles TENDON (tendons connect muscle to bone)

A lot of people who don't have a sense of humour in these comments 🫠

OP, don't you have friends who you joke around with? If not, find better friends. Life's too short to take everything so seriously.

45

u/Lisylis Aug 27 '26

Yes this seems like an obvious joke to me? I guess OP knows their friend best though

Being terminally online is such a plague. You have zero clue what their friendship is like, how long they've known each other, whether the friend did it as a joke. Literally nothing. No context. Just laugh at it and move on. You don't need to comment about ending friendships on comedy posts.

5

u/SuperNobody917 Aug 27 '26

Yeah I'm genuinely not sure how people with this kind of mindset can actually operate in social situations in the real world. If I cut off someone every time they did something stupid like this I don't think I'd have any friends left

This person cares so much about winning an argument that they're willing to create fake information to support their now fully well knowingly wrong argument, to convince you of a wrong position. With respect, you need to tell this person to fuck off out of your life.

11

u/hypnothighsd Aug 27 '26

Is he joking? Because this kind of joke is an art form. But he needed to let it hang in the chat just long enough to infuriate you. He also needed to text you a zoomed in photo of the bottom and a concession that you are right before you have a chance to reply.

I'd cut this person out of my life ASAP. I don't care if you didn't know that the ACL and your Achilles tendon are two different things, but trying to lie to me using AI shows me how little you respect knowledge, honesty, and our relationship. I refuse to humor someone's ego when it is steeped in duplicity.

6

u/ArnamYombleflobber Aug 27 '26

u/Comprehensive-Big595 Aug 27 '26

I mean you’re Achilles tendon is behind your ankle and your ACL is in your knee, and if you connect your hipbone to your hand bone spin it all around that’s what it’s all about

5

Two kinds of people in this world: the ones who want to be right so what they say isn't wrong, and the ones who want to be right because they can't admit when they're wrong.

The former can admit when they're wrong and will learn, the latter stay dumb fucks.

3

u/FootballFan1210 Aug 27 '26

I would just never talk to this person again. People that can’t admit they’re wrong might as well be a giant red flag

11

u/AggressiveFish2025 Aug 27 '26

This guys ego is insane 😳

3

u/Pancakes1741 Aug 27 '26

Yeah this is someone I would definitely not spend more time with. If someone is so petty as to do this, there are a lot of other things that they've likely done to gaslight/manipulate you. If this was me I would avoid contact with them till they can grow up.

3

u/Shamino79 Aug 27 '26

Tell them that their head and their arse are the same thing because they are both connected by skin.
