In a way, he's not wrong.

However, even in games like KCD 1&2 where it is explicitly and repeatedly made clear that you're a nothing and nobody you still get to a point where Henry is a terminator.

Not really sure how to balance the "just a regular guy" ethos and the wish fulfillment and player agency that most gamers desire, or at least I haven't found a game that hits the sweet spot.

The reality is nobody really wants to play as an absolute dipshit that can't do anything at all well, games are games after all. However, KCD1 made a much better effort in at least feeding you an illusion of you being a nobody, to the point where you couldn't even read without completing a quest.

In KCD2 you pretty much already start as a "Hero" and I'd argue that game doesn't even try to fool you in that regard.

I like that you were pretty much a nobody until the rug pull of 'oh you're actually a nobles son', and then you've been somebody all along. Kind of like KOTOR as well.

Even then there were plenty of bastard sons through history and that still is pretty clearly stated he is still below many people.

Thing is, I also feel like I’d like to feel a sense of progression with Henry’s story and overall skill level, and that’s kinda how I see KCD2. Like, I feel like his story should end with him more or less being a powerhouse

Yeah I didnt vibe with KCD2 at all despite loving the first one. I actually felt like a human in KCD1 rather than the one man army in KCD2.

I just started KCD2 on hardcore mode. It was nice running into my first encounter with two bandits thinking I had the chops, only to finally kill them 15 attempts later. Maybe it was skill issue, but it was a humbling experience none the less.
