DISCUSS FUTURE Arma 4
Why remove the most beloved features like workshop and editor just to appease console players? Does The leadership hate their fanbase of 15+ years that much? I hope the devs don’t act shocked when it inevitably flops and is DOA

u/Viper1Zero 1d ago
If all else fails, we still have Arma 3 boys.
And the workshop is still a banger factory.

u/Assassin13785 1d ago
Idk about all that but I do know from reforger that it is changed and will fuck over the pc players to keep Sony happy. It will still be an arma named game, it will have a playerbase, and I don't see it being doa. I think the fanbase will split. Old players will stick to the older games and new players will come in for the new game. It will work as a... Sqaud/hell let loose super light game with some arma influence. But I hope im completely wrong. I hope arma 4 is in a similar enough vein as arma 3 and it blows up and everyone is happy. But..... You can wish in one hand..... My other hands already full
7
u/LKincheloe 1d ago
There's always been splits every generation. Heck there was a contingent that stayed on 2 because they loathed the idea of Steam Workshop being the go-to for 3 modding.
8
u/fashionrequired 1d ago
i don’t recall that. lots of groups stayed on 2, yes. but it took years before the workshop was the main hub for mods. wasn’t it mostly just scenarios etc back in the day? lots of groups were still using a3sync in like 2019 lol
1
u/Lord_Vas 21h ago
I stayed on A2 when A3 first came out since A3 ran like hot ass on my computer back then.
A2 at the very least could be run at 40-60 fps at the time.

u/Cheap-Concentrate985 1d ago
They're removing editor too? Fuuuck, that doesnt make sense
-40
u/KillAllTheThings 1d ago
No, they're not REMOVING anything. They can't remove something that has never existed. The game code for Enfusion is totally different from Real Virtuality so everything is being coded from scratch. They made a list of the bare minimum features it would take to be a viable video game & turned it into Reforger. Now they are taking the bare minimum features it will take to be a viable Arma video game. Everything you think is "removed" will be added after launch.
Your patience will be rewarded.

u/UpsetKoalaBear 1d ago edited 1d ago
They’re removing Eden. As in the accessible editor that makes it quick to make missions.
Enfusion Workbench will still be there.
It just means that mods will be harder to make. Not that they’re gone.
People are crying for little reason. Enfusion is so much more capable than A3’s Eden that it’s not even a comparison.
Just for anyone here:
- Try and make a terrain for A3 and try and make a terrain for Reforger.
- Try and make an AI mod for A3 and try to make an AI mod for Reforger.
Like the only thing that Eden really gave was easy mission creation.
A lot of people don’t know that Eden was a part of the mod development process. Hence it had a lot of extra features in it outside of mission creation.
You still had to reach for external tools in A3 because Eden didn’t even have all of them. Mikero’s for instance.
That can still exist in A4 without Eden as it is and gameplay mods can be more in depth with Enfusion Workbench than they could ever get in A3.
Any mod maker will tell you that Enfusion is a hundred times better than the old mod creation workflow.
The workshop thing is a valid complaint. But anyone saying that “modding is gone” is completely wrong.
The devs most likely meant Eden as it is now, it isn’t going to be a thing because it’s no longer a part of the modding workflow like it was for A3 and a lot has moved out to Workbench.
56
u/Brootaful 1d ago
I honestly wonder if some of you guys have played Arma 3 at all.
First: mission making/creation/editing is not the same as mod development.
The Eden editor is a mission editor, and replaced the 2d mission editor. It was never a mod development tool, and I swear I've only ever seen people who only play Reforger who misremember it as such.
The Enfusion Workbench/Arma Reforger Tools are for developing mods, and though I've heard of some people making basic scenarios in it- that isn't it's real purpose.
This is what's being misunderstood or completely ignored here. We have stronger mod development tools, yes but the mission creators have nothing, and they're worried about whether Arma 4 will have the necessary tools to build missions. Pointing to the existence for robust mod development tools as a replacement for mission editing tools makes absolutely no sense as they're 2, similar, but ultimately very different things.
-18
u/KillAllTheThings 1d ago
FYI, BI uses the exact same tools for creating their game content as they provide in Arma/Reforger Tools. There's nothing special anywhere for "modders". We are all modders in BI's eyes.
For this reason, BI is HIGHLY incentivized to make the game content creation tools the best they can be. Time is money, after all. BI has been able to generate content for both Reforger & A4 at a much higher rate than they ever were able to for legacy Arma games.
And let's not forget it took BI something like 15 years to evolve Real Virtuality & make Eden Editor possible. Eden was made so they could do the Apex Expansion in a more reasonable time frame. That was several years after we got Arma 3. Everyone had to put up with the 2D editor until then.
18
u/Brootaful 1d ago
No matter how many times you or anyone else describes how much more powerful Arma Tools/Enfusion Workbench is the simple fact remains: They do not and should not replace the Eden Editor. The former is for building mods and maps. The latter is for building missions.
Eden editor is just over 10 year old now. It released in 2016, so 3 years after Arma 3's initial release. I wouldn't call that "several". Even if we're to agree that it took 15 years to make Eden possible in RV, does this mean we're meant to wait 15 years for Eden in Enfusion? I certainly hope not, because even waiting 5 years (we've already waited nearly 5 years since Reforger released,) really defeats the whole purpose of having Enfusion, and Reforger as a testbed.
-1
u/KillAllTheThings 1d ago
BI has 20 years of experience with RV. They have put that corporate experience to good use making Enfusion. They are not making a game engine that only has to deliver once, they are making one to last for years, like RV has. Because of this, things are actually progressing faster with Enfusion than with RV in the past. There's no way to please all those who lack patience.
If you look at the game code that's already been released for Enfusion, you can see it is doing things RV could never do at a fidelity exponentially higher than EOL Arma 3. For example, look at the difference between A3's VON (ingame chat) & Reforger's radio channels for ingame chat. (Yes, they've borrowed concepts from TFAR & ACRE to do it) Ditto for the medical features.
2
u/Brootaful 1d ago
Let's assume you're right and Enfusion is progressing faster than RV was (which isn't some great feat, considering it should be a given...) where is the proof of all of this? Like I've said in previous comments: if Reforger is this testbed, why haven't we been able to test a more fleshed out Game Master? Why don't we have an even basic Eden editor to test? We still don't even have tracked vehicles that have been teased for- what? 2 years now?
Even if we're to assume this is all going to be available in Arma 4 this, again, defeats the purpose of using Reforger as a testbed because we haven't been able to actually test some of the most significant parts of an Arma title, and will have to test them later in Arma 4.
You keep telling us to be patient but Reforger's almost 5 years old and the game literally runs and looks worse with each new update since 1.6 last year. That doesn't inspire confidence, and neither do all these PR-speak statements you keep making, to run defense for BI.
1
u/I_Maybe_Play_Games 26m ago
Reforgers team got gutted. They are closer in size to the A3 maintanance team then DayZ or A4 team
-20
u/UpsetKoalaBear 1d ago
Eden was a mission tool, yes.
However, Eden also had a bunch of stuff added onto it specifically for modding development like hooks.
That is what I am saying.
The lack of Eden in A4 doesn’t mean there won’t be a replacement mission creator.
It just means that Eden as it is could not exist in A4 because a lot of the functionality moved out to Workbench.
That was the premise of my comment. We don’t need Eden as it is because a lot of things are now unnecessary inside of it.
Until we get a statement about a mission creator, then there is nothing to speculate on.
16
u/Brootaful 1d ago
This comment makes no sense, though. What does it matter that most of the functionality that once existed in Eden is now within the workbench? The workbench still isn't a dedicated mission editor, and while it might be capable of being used as such, it's not its main focus.
There's no reason both can't coexist since they're meant to serve very different purposes. We clearly need a dedicated mission editor since there's almost no real co-op content in Reforger.
Also, if there's nothing to speculate on...Why are you making the speculation that Eden editor isn't needed, and can't exist in Arma 4?

The more generic (and console) audience is greater than the relatively niche audience of the previous titles.
Unfortunately, it is almost certainly going to do well amongst that generic crowd.
While it will be called Arma, it’s very detached from what made the series what it is.
It’s a shame, but that’s corporations for you.
3
u/Schneeflocke667 1d ago
But a generic game has to compete with other generic games while the niche is king in its corner.

u/Visible-Delivery-536 6h ago

5
u/0235 1d ago
The loss of workshop wont be an issue if they still support mods, and have a decent out-of-game mod browser. Plenty of games have their own mod browser (Factorio is a good example) and plenty of games dont, so non steam versions suffer (project zomboid).
Lack of editor is absurd though.
Well, BI did say when Arma 3 came out "this will be our last main ARMA game"....

2
u/MRLEGEND1o1 16h ago
Arma the game has always just been a starting point....they gotta know the bread and butter of the series is popping down opportunity and your squad and pressing play.
You can have an hour long firefight just based off of that. If you want to go deeper, you can go mega deep.
If they don't have that, don't even bother
7
u/UltraSwat 1d ago
People act like Bohemia won't improve the bad stuff from Reforger, like it's crazy.
Arma 4's workshop will 100% be an improvement on Reforger, seeing as that's the whole point of Reforger, it's a TESTBED. Arma 4 will have something similar to the 3DEN editor, probably not a launch similar to how Arma 3 didn't start with it.
Bohemia wanted more money and to see if they could make an Arma that is capable of working on consoles and with crossplay and they succeeded in that.
Arma 4 will have improvements, that's why Reforger exists. Bohemia know the workshop is a big complaint, they'll figure it out, cause if they don't, well shet.
25
u/Brootaful 1d ago
You guys keep saying it's a testbed, and yet there's so many features that are integral to Arma that we haven't had the chance to test. This makes people grow skeptical of BI's ability to deliver.
Next year Reforger will be 5 years old, and the workshop is still missing so many features, Game Master is completely neutered compared to Arma 3, the graphics and optimization continues to get worse, and the netcode has many issues. So, why should we continue to assume things will magically get better by Arma 4?
1
u/benargee 19h ago
Some features just are not on the roadmap for Reforger, simple as that. They are also working on Arma 4 in parallel. Putting all the features of Arma 4 into Reforger defeats the whole purpose of releasing Arma 4.
2
u/Brootaful 17h ago
I am aware of the fact that some features aren't part of the roadmap. My point is that, since Reforger is clearly meant to thoroughly test systems that will be in Arma 4 in order to iron out any issues, and prepare mod developers for Arma 4, those systems should be available in Arma Reforger to actually test. Otherwise, the whole purpose of Reforger being a "testbed" is defeated.
1
u/Visible-Delivery-536 6h ago
then what exactly have they been testing? perofrmance? worse now then it was on release. obv not scenario editing or general workshop content. What about network connectivity? so far all it seems to be testing is streamlining taking peoples money into bohemian pockets.
-7
u/UpsetKoalaBear 1d ago edited 1d ago
Game Master is completely extendable via the Enfusion Workbench. That’s the whole point.
You can extend or replace Game Master modes, tools and editable entity behaviour through Enforce Script, rather than working around Zeus's limitations.
It's part of the base game framework, so scenario mods can build around it without depending on a separate Zeus mod to enable features.
Quite literally the main thing Zeus had going for it was the fact that it has a mature ecosystem and content depth.
10
u/Brootaful 1d ago
None of this solves the problem of Game Master itself lacking many of the features that became staples of Arma 3 Zeus all the way back in 2016/2017.
You're not understanding that most people aren't looking to work with what are ostensibly mod development tools to try adding to other, separate features of the game that didn't require this kind of tinkering in the previous entry in the series.
25
u/LandenP 1d ago
My question is what the fuck they’re smoking that made them decide to ditch a ready-made mod workshop in favor of their own.
The answer is console players, of course, and it pisses me the fuck off2
u/KillAllTheThings 1d ago
Yes, because Steam only supports PCs, BI did have to create a Reforger Workshop. However, that doesn't mean BI will never include a Steam Workshop for either Reforger or A4 (it has always been on their To Do list).
The problem is Steam Workshop isn't a simple FTP service like Armaholic or PlaySIX were. It's a massively complex monster on the backend & nearly as big a pain in the ass to maintain as console content certification.
BI isn't offering a Steam Workshop for Enfusion content atm because doing the work would take far more resources to get done than BI feels is appropriate considering the higher priority features they have to complete before they can release A4 regardless of the status of mod support.
Incidentally, ALL the Reforger mods that are up-to-date will be readily ported to A4, it will be a simple conversion tool available to all content creators.
1
u/SleepyMode 1h ago
wtf are you talking about lol, workshop integration is straightforward, well documented and has been done even by indie teams easily. https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/workshop
-8
u/UpsetKoalaBear 1d ago
People do not really understand how much more capable Enfusion Workbench is compared to Eden.
Enfusion Workbench is a full development environment that gives an insane amount of tools.
Eden was great for small things but for large mods, you had to always pull out to go to Object Builder, Buldozer, or Mikero’s tools.
Likewise, Enforce is so much better than SQF it’s not even a debate.
11
u/ZephyrSouza 1d ago
Eden makes missions, not mods. It's not even in the same realm of technical capabilities.
The complaint is learning the workbench is an extremely daunting task that is much more complicated and imo cumbersome than Eden for just making a mission. Eden was easier to get basic things going and to build on the users experience over time.
This is coming from someone who's made mods and missions for Arma since OFP in 2001

Where did you hear that Arma 4 wouldn’t have the editor or workshop? Reforger for example still has the editor and a game master, and has the workshop built in.
10
u/Mike_Huntburns 1d ago
one of the Devs has said on the ArmA discord it will not have the Eden editor
5
u/Aggressive_Let2085 1d ago
Could also be referring to the new editor being the standard, because in reforger it’s not the regular Eden editor anymore.
1
u/KillAllTheThings 1d ago
The current World Builder is not feature complete by any stretch of the imagination. BI fully intends on eventually releasing something as effortless to use as Eden for A4.
More than a few years ago, the BI Creative Director said due to the complexity of this editor, it probably couldn't be ready for launch. However, so much of the community has had their knickers in a twist since that statement, I'd give it a 50-50 chance that we might see it for launch (almost certainly not for Early Access), if BI bumped it up their priority list.

u/JunoTheWildDoggo 1d ago
The built-in workshop is ass, the game master and editor is so limited and pales in comparison to the previous entry that's almost 12 fuckin' years old
-18
u/Aggressive_Let2085 1d ago
The editor is pretty strong I thought. You have to load it through the tools section on steam, it’s different but I didn’t think it was bad. Hell you can build terrains right there in the editor.
19
u/JunoTheWildDoggo 1d ago
In terms of customization I always found it extremely limiting. When I made scenarios for A3 I could create all kinds of custom scripts, assets, variables, etc to make something really cinematic and make the entire mission feel alive.

u/Aggressive_Let2085 1d ago
I definitely prefer the A3 Eden editor for sure. It’s easier to use.

In terms of customization I always found it extremely limiting.
Well yeah. That's the difference between a game engine reaching end of life because BI literally can not hang another single feature on it without breaking half the rest of the game code and a brand new, made from scratch game engine that has never had a mission editor.
3
u/GullibleApple9777 1d ago
I think you are missinterpeting his comment. He is not shitting on eden editor, he is shitting on reforgers
1
u/KillAllTheThings 1d ago
No, I said you can't compare a fully fleshed mission editor with 15 years of evolution (Eden) with an unfinished one only a couple of years old. The other commenter was also adding in Arma 3 features that aren't actually part of Eden, they are legacy features from the 2D editor.
1
-3
u/UpsetKoalaBear 1d ago edited 1d ago
That is utterly insane to say.
Enfusion Workbench is a thousand more times more complex than A3 ever was.
In A3 you were juggling between Eden, Object Builder, Buldozer and Mikero's tools.
The only thing Eden offered was ease of use for creating missions. That’s pretty much it. You still had to reach for external tools if you wanted anything deeper because it lacked so much.
There wasn’t even a debugger in A3.
Workbench includes:
- World Editor
- Resource Browser
- Script Editor
- Particle Editor
- Animation Editor
- Audio tools
In one suite.
A3 doesn’t even come close to the ceiling that Enfusion Workbench gives.
You can do everything you listed in Reforger much easier than it ever was in A3.
Are you honestly trying to say that Enforce is more limiting than SQF?
Try and make a terrain in A3 and let me know how it goes.
5
u/GullibleApple9777 1d ago
Eden was for mission making and mission making onlym and right now reforger doesnt have a good mission making tool. You are having a rant about things people are NOT talking about. An interactive and immersive mission I can make in Eden in 6 hours, in Reforgers editor would take a week. And than it would still lack functionality.
"You: ferarri is soo much better than an e scooter! It can go on highways and roads and you can load stuff it. Its so much better!!!
Everyone else: ye but I need something that I can use on sidewalk and take into the bus tho?
You: ferrari so much better!"

appease console players
More like a technical limitation. They can't exactly use steam workshop if they intend on supporting console. They can probably figure something out, but there is risk of fragmentation if they are running 2 different workshops. BI's own workshop can be good if they add a lot of features that the steam workshop has and also if they add some account linking with steam, xbox and playstation to better integrate with those platforms.
Steam is great because they do a great job at what they do, but let's not shit on competition trying to compete. Competition is only a good thing for consumers.
The game also does have an editor, just not built into the game. I do wish they add a simplified editor, but Reforger tools are much better than the seperate tools used for Arma 3 and previous.
Honestly, cross platform games are the future, and it won't be easy to solve the problems associated with it. There will be growing pains, but lets not shit on progress, ok?

Why remove the most beloved features like workshop and editor just to appease console players?
Firstly, nothing is being "removed" — Arma 4 is being developed on a completely different engine. That means all of the tooling needs to be rebuilt from scratch. Rome wasn't built in a day. Let them cook.
Secondly, Reforger already has both its own workshop and its own workbench suite which enables mission creation, so even if Arma 4 does not ship with anything that Reforger doesn't already have, it will still have both. The truth of this is heavily evidenced by the fact that Reforger already has tons of fairly fully-featured mods and scenarios available on its workshop — including both RHS and ACE, as well as new things that arguably couldn't even be done through Arma 3's tools.
So, at face value, your claim that Arma 4 won't have a workshop or an editor are just clearly false. The fact remains that even just in Reforger, you can open the game, join a heavily modded server, and immediately be presented with a list of the mods you need and a single-press button to download and install them all, and then join the server and play. Just like with the Steam Workshop.
With all that being said, yes, there are plenty of complaints about the workshop (mostly related to jankiness and console limitations), and also plenty of complaints about the workbench tools being poorly suited for scenario editing. These are valid concerns and are something that Bohemia is undoubtedly going to address. The CEO of Bohemia already mentioned last month on X that "modding and the mission editor were our compass, not window dressing" and promising "no shortcuts." They are clearly aware of the criticisms and intend to address them — maybe not in the exact way you or the rest of the community wants them to, but again: you have to let. them. cook.
When I look at the other things that they have been cooking over the last decade, I see some really incredible progress. The Enfusion engine — even just the version in Reforger — is positively gorgeous, and way more capable than the Real Virtuality engine that previous Arma titles were built on. The new Enforce scripting language is an enormous improvement over SQF. The workbench tools are absolutely lightyears ahead of Arma 3's modding tools, even if they are currently poorly-suited for scenario editing — and hell, most of Arma 3's best modding tools were third-party anyway (Mikero's Tools, Eliteness, etc.). Not to mention the fact that Arma 3 didn't even ship with the Eden editor, it came years after release.
But all of these very positive things that have been paving the way for Arma 4 have taken time to develop — often a considerable amount of time, and the road to completion was fraught with complications. Still, Bohemia didn't back down and continued the challenging work to shore these things up. Do you really think that Bohemia's leadership hates their fanbase when they have been working with such dedication to build a solid foundation for new Arma titles (i.e. the Arma Platform)? If so, then you aren't even trying to pay attention, you're just fucking whining, all because we aren't already at the "complete and polished" phase yet.
TL;DR: Shut the fuck up and let Bohemia cook, you ungrateful console-hating turd-gurglers. Most of you crybabies don't have any clue just how much effort is going into the future of Arma and wouldn't recognize what hard work is if a 12-hour-day, 6-days-a-week construction laborer dragged their sweaty nuts across your faces.

Jesus Christ, people in this sub are absolutely delusional.
Reforger is the best thing that could have happened to the Arma Community, it completely revitalized the playerbase and modding community. Arma 3 is on it's way to the grave, and if you can't see this, then you are simply delusional.
Communities are closing down left and right or are completely moving over to Reforger. If you are stuck on Arma 3 and won't try new things, good for you I guess. But stop complaining when the playerbase in Reforger is much much larger than Arma 3.

God forbid people want a franchise they’ve been with since the beginning to stay true to its roots and not cater to the lowest common denominator (console slop).

Where was it ever said A4 wasn't going to have an editor? I haven't seen that anywhere but everyone seems to be talking about it as if it's a definite fact. What did I miss?

BI can't take out features that have never existed in Enfusion. These features are lacking because they haven't created them yet.
BI never said they weren't going to have them, they have only said they probably wouldn't be able to get them in before launch day.
