Dylan Larkin Booed on Opening Night

Clip credit u/daKrut

Context: Dylan Larkin was the captain of the Detroit Red Wings and requested a trade, while having a no-trade clause, and originally limited the team to 3 options to where he would agree to be traded to. He has since been stripped of the captaincy and has largely turned the entire fanbase against him. Had he not made such an unreasonable request for a trade, he would likely have not faced such harsh backlash.

Went straight to his yacht to cry

Oh on the Detroit River? That's like going to the nicest shed in the trailer park there to cry, bub.

16

u/Indian_Bob 15h ago

Detroit jokes were so dope in 2008

-3

u/FrighteningJibber 15h ago

At the expense of the Red Wings? Worth it since that's the last time the were good.

-13

u/Indian_Bob 15h ago

Bro I’m surprised anyone outside of their fans gives a shit about them. Hockey is the bastard child of the major sports. If you’ve ever worked at a hotel that supports youth sports teams you would know hockey parents are the fucking worst

4

u/FrighteningJibber 15h ago

It's a job. Everyone's job fucking suck.

And as any teacher will say, all kids are little shits and they were raised by large shits. Including you and I.

Considering hockey is an international sport, yes, people do. Just not you.

I have no idea who he is.

I still never heard of "Dylan Larkin" and what sport he plays.

Can some American explain it?

21

u/Zman11588 2h ago

He plays hockey and has been on the Detroit Red Wings, one of the most storied franchises in hockey history, and was their Captain which as you can imagine, is the top player on the team.

The Red Wings held an American sports record for most consecutive playoff appearances but that was some time ago and he was seen as someone who might be able to turn things around but that wasn’t the case and last year, he requested a trade which wasn’t well received by a loyal passionate fan base. Especially considering a lot of people think part of the reason he wanted out was because of beef with the Red Wings GM, one of mine, and Detroits most legendary athletes Steve Yzerman.

Also, he was on the US hockey team that won gold at the Olympics and than partied with a fascist and went to the White House to see another.

Fuck him.

85

u/freebucks779 1d ago

Gonna need a Canadian for that one

38

u/SilverMcFly 1d ago

Hockey.

-112

u/NearbyRun7270 1d ago

After googling him, he plays ice hockey, not just hockey.

48

u/Hotlovemachine 1d ago

That's is just hockey, bud

-50

I'm from the UK. Hockey to me means the game we played at school.

Ice hockey is different, and needs to be called that if you want people to know what you're talking about

2

u/Tripottanus 2h ago

I'm from Canada. Football to me means the game we played at school.

Soccer is different, and needs to be called that if you want people to knkw what you're talking about.

Am I doing this right?

17

u/FrighteningJibber 16h ago

Then why talk about things that aren't English? Stay on your island and never leave.

7

Thats kinda Thier whole thing

Awh, bless your heart

No. I hate okra.

16

u/awkwrdaccountant 17h ago

There is always someone from the UK to tell as all what words to use. Even I, a silly American, know hockey means people are on ice. Field hockey should use the full name.

u/theoriginalpetebog 16h ago edited 16h ago

EDIT: you know wht? Fuck it. I'm way too grumpy already today and this just doesn't matter

10

u/Louisiana_sitar_club 15h ago

No way. This matters a great deal. Keep going.

-6

u/theoriginalpetebog 15h ago

I mean, if you read my comment, I was just adding some international context, not telling anyone they were wrong. So why argue about it with other people?

Y'all have a nice day now

44

u/Mike_with_Wings 1d ago

Yeah it’s safe to assume it’s ice hockey when someone just says hockey.

-7

u/ThatShipGuy 17h ago

As an Australian, I have to say that when someone says hockey, it's not ice hockey that springs to mind. Ice hockey looks awesome but we just don't have it over here shrugs

5

u/Mike_with_Wings 16h ago

It is pretty great, I’m shocked it hasn’t made its way there in a major way with how popular it is across so much of the world. Even the parts of America that never see ice have die hard hockey fans

4

u/Amethyst_Scepter 6h ago

Hell in Florida we have two NHL teams and they're both Stanley Cup Champions

2

u/Mike_with_Wings 4h ago

We have the reigning champs here in Raleigh. It snows three times a year if it’s a particularly cold winter.

2

u/Amethyst_Scepter 2h ago

Hell yeah. Y'all beat the ones that beat us. For what it's worth I was on your side against the knights. And we beat the capitals yesterday so rest easy lol good luck out there and we will see you next month

2

u/SundinShootsPing500 22h ago

To be fair to the guy getting downvoted, hockey originated being played on a field similar to how soccer is played. Field hockey is brutal and beautiful, but more spread out and less explosive as ice hockey.

4

u/Mike_with_Wings 16h ago edited 16h ago

Ok, but field hockey is nowhere near as popular despite its origins in the 1800s

14

u/cambino123 1d ago

I was also thinking he could be an American Air Hockey-er

2

u/WatermeIonMe 1d ago

Pro-bowl hall of fame tonsil hockeyer, eh

15

u/NearbyRun7270 1d ago

Sorry, but I've never heard of that man. Maybe some American athlet.

4

u/Gits_N-Shiggles 3h ago

He was the captain of the Detroit Red Wings, no longer captain as he was stripped off the"C", and requested to be traded after last season. Because he has a no trade clause in his contract every trade has to be approved by him and has made it hard to get rid of him. He just signed a 7 year contract like last summer or the one before. Detroit hasn't taken to kindly of their former captain essentially saying he doesn't want to play for them anymore.

12

u/Mike_with_Wings 1d ago

Hockey player

73

u/YooperWolf 1d ago

Yeah, nothing will get me to hate Larks. Dude gave his body up for an organization that refused to get him help, he has every right to want to go to a winner since the Wings obviously have no interest in that.

15

u/LQNova 18h ago

No one is mad about the trade request. He's old and slow now and wants to go slack off and get carried on a good team. That happens all the time.

He fucked us over in every possible way while doing it, though. That is unforgivable.

P. S. Now you folks know how we feel when you piss on for hours about soccer.

-4

u/DoomMessiah 23h ago

A captain isn’t supposed to turn their back on their team.

71

u/Wondur13 1d ago

Lmfao, its insane how disconnected professional sports players are from any other normal job, that you are standing up for a dude whos made millions of dollars just because he didnt win a trophy. Dude agreed to a no trade clause in his contract, now hes throwing a hissy fit. Those are the facts

4

u/cochin1504 1d ago

What are you talking about? A no trade clause means that he has the chance to reject any trade, not that team can't trade him. Obviously a team always has the option of just sitting on a contract and not trading a guy. It has nothing to do with the no trade clause.

Guys with no trade clauses end up demanding trades all the time, across sports.

7

u/Wondur13 1d ago

Yeah except he demanded a trade and is only allowing request from THREE TEAMS

3

u/cochin1504 1d ago

Three teams would be unreasonable. But, the rumor now is that its more like 8 or 9 teams. Its hard to really know what's going on because its all speculation and rumor.

I don't think its unreasonable for a player with a no trade to request a trade and still retain some say in where he goes. But yes, narrowing it to 3 teams would be completely unfair to the team.

0

u/viau83 1d ago

Whenever a player ask for a trade, the no trade clause should be void.

3

u/ReduxRedo 1d ago

Trade Clauses are good for the player, and the fact that you don't know that kinda indicates that you don't know anything about this guy or this situation.

-4

u/Wondur13 1d ago

If you actually read the comment thread instead of just crybabying the first comment youd realize that

1

u/ReduxRedo 1d ago

... I'd realize what big guy. Take it slow, try to make it an entire thought this time.

-2

u/Wondur13 1d ago

Eh whatever youre not worth my time

4

u/RubbleR0user 1d ago

It’s likely a no trade clause on his part. Meaning he can choose which teams he is traded to (or not traded to) It’s pretty common in hockey but it usually 8-10 teams or moreso the teams they refuse to goto. 3 is low and limited the return the wings could get for him

9

u/YooperWolf 1d ago

Almost like the most coveted goal in the sport is to raise Lord Stanley. Most of the league would give up a lot of money for that chance.

12

u/WojoStumps 1d ago

Their is a certain expectation from players when they sign a contract as well as remain the captain of the team. His contract was just signed with a no trade clause, meaning he agreed that he wanted to stay in Detroit for the duration of his contract. Add on top that he was born in that state and watched the same team he plays for you'd think that this was his dream job.

Long story short he agreed to the contract as well as being the captain which comes with great responsibility in the organization. You can't just up and leave with all of that on the line. Also he only wanted to go to teams that had little to no resources to give back to us, creating an incredibly hard situation for the team to deal with.

1

u/xyouRABitchx 18h ago

A person signing a no trade clause has nothing to do with wanting to finish his contract on that team lol. You add that so you can't be dumped to a shitty team or an undesirable team. You essentially just want input on where you are being traded.

I see a lot of older players who potentially will lose a step during that contract want a no trade clause

7

u/Wondur13 1d ago

Yeah and not many get to win it, so they should understand that, especially in this case where not only is he just waiving his no trade clause, hes being petty and only wanting to be traded to specific teams that would have to give up way too much to reasonably trade for him. That being said if the team that trades for him gives up that much, they are not competing for a stanley cup. Genuinely dont understand how you dont get this.

8

u/ComfortableDish3912 1d ago

Man, what a fall off. When I was a kid, the wings were automatically into the playoffs. What was it 24 seasons in a row or something?

4

u/Jagacin 1d ago

25... and we haven't made it since (going on a decade now)

18

u/MalleableBee1 1d ago

I mean, if I got paid $8.7M on a contract with a no-trade clause, I'd just suck it up and do the best I could do on ANY team. He deserves to be booed.

16

u/Sudden_Juju 1d ago

It's the way he went about everything that turned the Red Wings fans against him. He had been playing fine but not his usual great self until he had a good run in the Olympics and flashed again. He rode that success to trying to finagle a trade to only championship-ready teams - teams which famously aren't interested in an aging inconsistent player.

Of course they got no biters from the three teams or whatever he okayed, so the hometown hero look that he has got marred. He also recently added the Avs to that list, which is a team that Red Wings fans hate with a passion.

If he asked for a trade and didn't just try to limit it to teams that were already in contention, the opinion would likely be different.

Larkin has been captain of the Detroit Red Wings for a number of years. In professional hockey,  the  captain  is the player designated by a team as the only person authorized to speak with the game  officials  regarding rule interpretations when the captain is on the ice. The role is also considered to be the locker room leader. The Detroit Red Wings have failed to make the playoffs for a number of years. Larkin has grown frustrated with the team and management and wanted a trade to another team. Larkin had signed a contract that gave him the right to refuse a trade. Larkin wanted a trade to a select small number of teams. Also the general manager Steve Yzerman was fired. Yzerman is hockey royalty having lead the Red Wings to several championship when he was an active player and Captain. Many fans feel betrayed and are angry over this perceived betrayal. Hope that explains it.

16

u/drrtydan 1d ago

he also thought he could ask for a trade and was shocked when they collected the c from him…

57

u/Upeopleamerican 1d ago

I grew up watching him play here. He was supposed to be the guy who stayed, the face of the franchise. Now I'm watching him get booed off the ice by people who used to buy his jerseys. It doesn't even feel good anymore, it just feels sad. We lost something real because he wanted more control than loyalty.

14

u/skoomski 1d ago

I want to be real with you. Your team wasn’t going to win again during his era. So in away him leaving (hopefully so ) can jump start the rebuild. Your last rebuild just didn’t work out.

1

u/MadCard05 13h ago

I'm not a Detroit fan, and I'm going to be real with you: Larkin's trade request is unrealistic for the teams he's willing to wave his no trade clause for.

2 of the 3 teams are direct competition for the Wings. And because they're all real contenders for the cup, what they can give in return is pretty lousy. Their picks are garbage, and their prospects aren't Larkin level. Not to mention they have to be able to afford him.

2

u/skoomski 10h ago

100% but might as well use it as a way to tank for a pick.

1

u/tralalaBOOMdeay 11h ago edited 10h ago

I have general questions. I'm not a sports person, so please be patient with me.

I understand the no trade clause and situational Larkin details through some comments here but I'm fuzzy on other basic things involved with the process.

Like, if he's being very choosy about where he can be traded, can the Red Wings refuse a trade if they don't think it's fair (the player they're offered is not the expected skill level, etc)? Could this lead to a sort of gridlock or are they ultimately forced to take what they can get? Is there still a money exchange involved and if so, does that go to the players being traded?

EDIT: If Larkin re-signed an 8 year contract, is this happening in the middle of it, and is that typical/acceptable?

2

u/MadCard05 10h ago

The Redwings can refuse to trade him and he can refuse to be traded.

His contract is signed through 2031.

They're going to have to come to an agreement on a trade. Which I assume will be at the trade deadline, to a surprise team.

17

u/SkeletonizedbyDemon 1d ago

I wouldn't have cared if he left, I wanted him to go somewhere and win it all. He's the one who signed a long term contract. He's the one who had the NTC. He told us he wanted to stay and then he fucked the team because he had fun with his friends during the Olympics.

He’s controlling the trade market by limiting the teams he’ll go to. Those teams have dog shit assets to trade for him, further hurting the team he is currently under contract with.

He signed a contract with a no trade clause and now he conveniently wants a trade, but only to a select few cities, thus putting his team in an impossible situation.

He's the team captain and has been a big part of the team collapsing late in each of the past 4 seasons. He can't throw a fit over the performance of the team when he himself has a been a reason for the team's shotty performances in late winter/early spring. The "C" on the front of the Detroit Red Wings uniform used to be regarded as a great honor and a privilege to wear for being such a storied franchise. To now have the guy (who's literally from the Metro Detroit area too, and played at the University of Michigan) who has captained this team for most of his career, saying he wants to retire a Red Wing when he signed a new long-term contract, now deciding he wants to be traded because of the team's under performance for the past number of seasons that he played a part in. It's a massive slap in the face as a loyal fan who isn't getting paid $8 million a year (Larkin's annual salary) to watch such a disappointing team. Not to mention, he has handcuffed the team by only allowing them to trade him to 8 top projected Stanley Cup contenders, none of whom have worthwhile assets to spare for someone like Larkin. There's a lot of missing context that you just don't get.

7

u/Paper_Clip100 1d ago

He’s a big reason the team continues to lose. Until he realizes the season doesn’t end in February, it’ll continue

25

u/BrokeArmHeadass 1d ago

I mean, first of all, he’s breaking the contract he signed. Second, limiting the options he’d accept means he’s severely handicapping what the team might be able to get in return. It’s a really selfish way to go about demanding a trade, especially when you’ve been named captain there’s already expectations of leadership and return. I bet it would’ve been totally different if he’d turned down the captaincy knowing this was something he wanted or had been more amicable with trade negotiations.

-11

u/banksybruv 1d ago

When I left my old job, I was the lead. I effectively slashed their production abilities in half and left them with nobody able to fill my position. The office was left scrambling to pick up the pieces in the field.

My boss at the time also understood that I need to do what’s best for me and my family. No hard feelings.

It’s business. There’s nothing personal about it. If fans think a player owes them ANYTHING AT ALL, they need to nip that parasocial relationship in the bud.

9

u/drrtydan 1d ago

did you sign a 8 year contract with your job, collect a majority of the money because it was front loaded , then want out after 3?

0

u/banksybruv 1d ago

Sounds like business to me

14

u/sarcasmasquach 1d ago

I don't even keep up with hockey anymore but it's important to consider the standard set by Steve Yzerman. This must seem like heresy.

4

u/memeaste 1d ago

The Yzerplan has failed

92

u/ryanasap310 1d ago

Why is he in street clothes. This had me wondering why the fans were booing the team accountant.

24

He "got hurt" when the wings forced him to skat during practice so he wouldn't have to play.

45

u/bowman9 1d ago

11

u/Weezerwhitecap 1d ago

Okay, EpicRussia... but like, you would say that.

34

u/ktjtkt 1d ago

Why did he want to trade? (I know nothing of this sport just genuinely want to understand)

33

u/Last-Classroom-5400 1d ago

He’s been a good player in the league for 11 seasons, and 10 of those have made up the second longest playoff drought of all time in the NHL. He got a taste of winning at the Olympics last year, and wants to be traded somewhere where he has a better shot to win.

0

u/LabRatsAteMyHomework 1d ago

I'm failing to understand why that's upsetting to people. Dude wants a new job with a new team and everyone in the fan base hates him for it? That's kinda fucked up. In any other profession that would be considered balanced self awareness and advocating for oneself

41

u/beatisagg 1d ago

There's more nuance to it. He doesn't take responsibility for things in some odd scenarios, like we will have lost the game and not go "we need to do better" he'll say something like, "we need other people to step up." He showed a bit of his political leanings by trying to be first in line to shake Trump's hand when the USA team was back from the Olympics, meanwhile other teams were declining to visit the white house. Then there's the abysmal performance in the months after the Olympics, which has been a running theme for the red wings in their closing months of the season for years. He throws out a trade request PUBLICLY and makes it known that he only wants to go to 1 of 3 teams, all of which are teams that red wings fans absolutely hate. They didn't make a deal with any of these teams. The GM also was catching a lot of flack for inaction and some people blame Dylan Larkin wanting out and having a shitty attitude and trade destination list for complete morale shutdown because basically the leader is giving up on the team/town. Then he goes out and makes a buffoon of himself all summer and comes back and pretends to be injured so as not to play or participate in training camp.

It's not just good guy wants a better job.

2

u/LabRatsAteMyHomework 13h ago

Ah sounds like shitty guy with talent feels entitled to selfishly cheat his way out of the (legal and social) contract and get a deal that fucks other people over just so he can step up. Sounds right in line with his political leanings if what you say is true. I've seen this conservative style of shoving forward while being completely dissociated from the social repercussions of their selfishness, and it's gone beyond prevalent, it is now so very cancerous. People just need to stop and ask themself "what if everyone did that?" It's so simple and will always guide you towards the greater good.

25

u/cA05GfJ2K6 1d ago

Solid summary. He’s handled himself probably the worst way imaginable.

He was also the one that invited Kash into the Olympic locker room.

-14

u/CaptainMagnets 1d ago

Some people are so obsessed with their sports teams that it's an unhealthy mental disorder.

That should explain why some people are getting so angry

21

u/mrdannyg21 1d ago

Not defending anything, but for some context, Larkin signed an 8-year extension in 2023. The team had already been crappy for a while, so if he had concerns about their direction, he could’ve opted for free agency instead and signed elsewhere.

It’s also typical that a captain in hockey sticks with the team through good and bad. He would’ve been cheered for question the direction of the team, but asking for a trade isn’t a great look. The real thing tbat sets his situation apart from most is that he was so restrictive with his trade request, only ‘allowing’ for three teams. Doing that really hurts the team’s leverage and ability to trade him for a decent return. If he really wanted to be traded, there’s no reason to be so picky about where he was willing to go - plenty of players with no-trade clauses aren’t willing to just go anywhere, but only allowing for three teams is very unusual, especially when you’re the one directing the request.

TLDR: requesting a trade is jot all that unusual in hockey and Larkin likely wouldn’t be boo’ed solely for that. But several circumstances make his situation unusual and arguably more boo’able.

-15

u/TheOliveYeti 1d ago

Because sports fans are weirdos

I understand being passionate about teams, but at the end of the day it's a job and fans are weirdly entitled about people having the audacity to want to switch teams even though teams show no loyalty to players 99% of the time.

"HOW DARE THIS PERSON WANT TO LEAVE MY FAVORITE MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR FRANCHISE?!!!"

13

u/ShuffledSilly 1d ago

He has a contract and should honour it, otherwise what is the point of signing it in the first place? Same with Helly.

-4

u/chardeemacdennisbird 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes because professional sports teams are famous for holding up their side of contracts and not trading or cutting players as they feel fit.

Edit: downvotes but no one wants to tell me why I'm wrong?

23

u/leftlanemine 1d ago

While your line of thinking is absolutely correct, this isn't any other job. He's a "hometown" guy who the team made Captain (a big deal in Detroit) and signed to a long term deal (8 years). Now three years into that contract he demanded a trade. His contact allows him trade protection so he gets final say on what team he goes to, basically. He gave management three teams he wanted to be traded to but those teams have nothing to offer us in value and can't afford him based on current salary cap situations anyway. It's rumored that he has added teams he would accept a trade to but it's the same deal with those teams.

All that to say that I'm just briefing you, there are even more layers to this story.

1

u/LabRatsAteMyHomework 14h ago

Thanks. Yeah sounds like he's taking the morally wrong but legally correct way of going forward, which is understandably disgusting in the eyes of the fans.

4

u/Last-Classroom-5400 1d ago

It’s not any other profession though, it’s a sport. Fans like their team and want to see it have success, but now the captain has given up on it. Kids have his jersey and don’t understand why their favourite player doesn’t want to play for the team anymore. Shit sucks.

Also 10 years of failure has built up a lot of resentment amongst fans, and Larkin has become an outlet for that resentment.

9

u/InfiniteRosie 1d ago

He had a no-trade clause in his contract and tried to strong-arm the owners into letting him go to avoid paying for breaking contract

He won the gold medal with the US Olympic team, and decided he wanted to go play with his friends on a better team (the Wings own the currently longest playoff drought in the league at 10 years). He demanded a trade to one of Minnesota, Florida or Vegas. All 3 are very good teams contending for the Stanley Cup, and all 3 prominently feature players from that Olympic team. All 3 are also right up against the salary cap, and don't have any good assets that Detroit would want in return. So, he hasn't been traded, and he's completely alienated his fanbase by basically saying 'this team isn't good enough for me'. He's also from Detroit, so it's viewed as an even bigger level of betrayal by the fanbase,

u/jodihas2kids 1d ago

As a Jets fan, I can understand that sentiment....

44

u/boodabomb 1d ago

And the whole partying with Kash Patel thing after the Olympics has publicly repainted his political standing at the exact same time as all of this.

-3

u/frothyundergarments 1d ago

I will grant that it was weird and inappropriate for him to be there, but demonizing the players ain't it

6

u/boodabomb 1d ago

There’s a distinction though. It’s not that the players were demonized, it’s exclusively the players who appeared to be stoked about it and were dancing doing Tik Toks with him and shit.

18

u/BlueBomR 1d ago

That was so fucking weird...why the fuck is the FBI director in the locker room of the USA hockey team drinking beers!? Cause the optics weren't what they thought they would be

10

u/HotTubSexVirgin22 1d ago

Also used the tax-payer funded plane as his personal private jet to get there.

12

u/Daft00 1d ago

why the fuck is the FBI director in the locker room of the USA hockey team drinking beers!?

Cause the current FBI director is desperate for validation and wants nothing more than to be cool. He's also got a wayyyy bigger ego than he has any right to have.

6

u/I_AM_A_ZEBRA_AMA 1d ago

That, and the alcoholism.

-23

u/Mind_Extract 1d ago

I may not know all the nuances of sporty ball, but if I knew my "fans" were capable of turning on me like this I'd be looking for an out.

30

u/VanHicklestein 1d ago

This is such an obnoxious comment on several levels

7

u/Walawacca 1d ago

They watched the IT crowd and think it made them clever.

28

u/Unhappytimes 1d ago

Just to add to the context of this. He is the captain and this is hometown team. The Wings took a big risk on him and built the franchise around him. The fans love him until he wanted out. -Signed someone with a Dylan Larkin Jersey

69

u/znraf1 1d ago

Other way around, he turned on the fans first

56

u/shoegazer44 1d ago

He turned on them first. Signed an 8 year contract with them and demanding a trade 3 years in. Thus the booing.

1

u/Last-Classroom-5400 1d ago

Tbf the wings were booed pretty relentlessly at the end of last season too

4

u/shoegazer44 1d ago

Very different booing a team because they put up a historically terrible record over the course of a couple months to miss the playoffs when they were essentially a lock before that, and booing an individual player. Both instances are completely deserved tho for different reasons.

16

u/Mister_Pickl3s 1d ago

He is…oddly enough all the ridiculous trade requests have come from US players on the national team…

41

u/AppleToastBed 1d ago

Who?

-13

u/TheOliveYeti 1d ago

Hockey stuff. So maybe 5 people know what's going on

91

u/Kemomiwiwane 1d ago

Long story short, a hockey player who’s requested a trade from his hometown team and has been a complete bitch throughout the process.

51

u/itotally_CAN_even 1d ago

I hope Hellebuyck gets this kind of welcome wherever he goes… fucking yankee skud

5

u/frank_davisdixie109 1d ago

I’d gladly eat his salary , sitting him for the rest of his contract if I were the owner

185

u/WitchyMae13 1d ago

Omfg this kills me that this is on this sub.

Lifelong Red Wings fan, current metro-Detroit resident.

I’m on a few years older than Larkin and when he first started he was an amazing player and the hometown boy we all wanted….. I knew people he knew and he was gonna be the new wave!

After 3 seasons kid could barely play the game it seemed, and then he had the C even with that. Ok whatever.

Then he hits the White House, and tries TO GET TRADED from his hometown team, even though he was one of the main reasons we weren’t as good anymore. And had the nerve to run his mouth through it all.

I’m so glad I didn’t buy a Larkin jersey. He’s a snake in the goddamn grass. So embarrassing.

-3

u/technobeeble 1d ago

Barely play the game? C'mon now.

3

u/Mister_Pickl3s 1d ago edited 1d ago

Of note all the ridiculous no trade clause requests that Bettman alluded to came from US players on the national team. Yeah, that’s who they are…

3

u/Hammi_and_Chippie 1d ago

*alluded to

5

u/Mister_Pickl3s 1d ago

touché, spelling eluded me too

26

u/CWRosebud 1d ago

And it’s not just that he asked to be traded (that could have been fine), but that he gave the Red Wings a list of only three teams and refused to waive his no-trade clause for any other teams. AND none of the three teams he picked had any real reason to trade for him. From what I understand, he still hasn’t expanded that list.

4

u/DirtyxXxDANxXx 1d ago

To be fair the MN Wild have a very real reason to trade FOR him, the Wild just don’t have the assets wanted in return for him.

7

u/WitchyMae13 1d ago

Thank you for the addition. I heard bits of that but haven’t been totally following.

Makes him even more of a child than he already is. So frustrating. But whatever!

I did catch somewhere, his requests were “all to teams that have playoff possibilities and no one useful for the Red Wings to take on” 🤣 or something along those lines.

Dude’s a clown. I cannot believe he’s such a turncoat.

9

u/Goaliedude3919 1d ago

I think he expanded it, oh so generously, to a fourth team that also has no reason to trade for him lol. The biggest problem though is that none of the 4 teams have anything worth trading for, even if they did want Larkin.

12

u/Spear994 1d ago

It's up to 8 teams. The problem is there is only one team on there with any kind of "space" with the cap (Tampa with a whopping 2 million), and only one team that arguably has anything even remotely close to what Detroit might want that they'd give up (Washington).

When your list is entirely made up of Stanley cup favorites, with zero room for discussion for any up and coming teams, you're not winning yourself a PR battle. He reportedly would have been traded by now if he'd accept a deal to Montreal, but you know. MAGA says fuck Canada.

5

u/WitchyMae13 1d ago

From what I’ve read since getting back into this “all to teams that have playoff possibilities and no one useful for the Red Wings to take on” 🤣 or something along those lines.

Dude’s a clown. I cannot believe he’s such a turncoat.

77

u/DarkIllusionsMasks 1d ago

He was getting backlash all the way back to chugging beers with his boof buddy Ka$h Patel. Very few people around here can stand him anymore.

33

u/Amphibian-Existing 1d ago

I will also say that LCA has priced out most real fans just like the lions. That place would be jumping if it didn’t cost me and other families 1500 to attened.

-45

u/Stressy-And-Depressy 1d ago

Stop the cap bro, upper bowl seats cost $35-$75. The only way you'd be spending even close to $1500 is if you're trying to get near the glass or the middle of the lower bowl & if you're trying to do that as a family, then you're just silly.

14

u/syynapt1k 1d ago

Lol "bro"

12

u/Amphibian-Existing 1d ago

This was more directed towards opening night, For the wings but any lions game. Wings tickets will be cheap this year. Nobody wants to watch this crap

5

u/FlynnLive5 1d ago

I spent $60 total for 2 tickets last night.

I parked for free on the street 4 blocks away and got my free pop. I ate a nice dinner at home just before leaving. I buy my jerseys off eBay.

We’ll go to about 20 games this year to boo the owners and I highly doubt it’ll cost us more than $1000 to go to that many games this year.

-31

u/Stressy-And-Depressy 1d ago

Downvote me all you want. Doesn't change the fact that I go to around 8-10 Wings games a year & know what their prices are like. Y'all delusional.

4

u/KingVape 1d ago

You can’t read lmao

37

u/ReactionProcedure 1d ago

This will not go away, it's just the beginning.

All professional sports follow the same zeitgeist in this case, player empowerment.

If you're willing to not get paid, eventually it's in everyone's best I terest to move on.

6

u/Dear-Pickle-2200 1d ago

Embarrassing from the team to trot him out there like that. If I’m a free agent considering Detroit I’m remembering this

-9

u/Naganosupreme 1d ago

Exaggerating how much of a big deal this is

76

u/ohnothem00ps 1d ago

lol you obviously do not follow hockey…the only one that is ‘embarrassing’ in this whole situation is Larkin

-34

u/Amphibian-Existing 1d ago

Nah man. This was on the owner being a moron. Larkin is sick of it. We don’t know the details and I agree he could’ve gone about this better, but so could Steve and the owner. They gotta go. Just like Larkin now. No way he plays in 2 games. Only losers are the fans in this. We deserve better. We other player that should be playing but he’s not even on this continent, he’s back in Sweden because they can’t get a contract done.

9

u/meromeromeru 1d ago

Two things can be true

75

u/SketchesofCasper 1d ago

The team is embarrassing themselves plenty but this isn’t one of the moments. Don’t just repeat talking points you hear on TV. They introduce every roster player, injured/scratched/whatever, each opening night. Prob a bot anyway

-14

u/PleaseHelpImADumb1 1d ago edited 1d ago

How is this not one of those moments.

They introduce them every night but you’re acting like the homegrown captain has quit on them before.

This situation is completely different and the team having zero awareness is embarrassing for them and Larkin.

Also, good riddance to that clown.

Edit: If you don’t understand the context of this, your opinion doesn’t matter. That kid quit on his team and city. Don’t put him in front of the home crowd.

-2

u/Naganosupreme 1d ago

Exaggerating how much of a big deal this is

1

u/PleaseHelpImADumb1 1d ago

I didn’t say it was a big deal.

I said it’s embarrassing for the wings and larkin.

If this was the Red Wings subreddit my comment would be upvoted. Ya’ll have an opinion on something you don’t know or understand the context of, clearly.

1

u/Naganosupreme 1d ago

Re reading, I thought you Saud something about this being embarrassing for the league which is why I said you're exaggerating bc as much as it sux for Detroit, the league dgaf

So reading fail by me

-12

u/Dear-Pickle-2200 1d ago

Yep everyone who says something you don’t agree with is a bot. Totally the solid foundation of a rational thought process

34

u/jimmytwotime 1d ago

Bot answer

-6

u/Dear-Pickle-2200 1d ago

Beep boop

30

u/Chizzer19 1d ago

Larkin confirmed that it was his decision to get introduced. If he had refused then the rest of the rookies not in the lineup would have had to not get introduced as well. I despise Larkin but these are the facts.
