Discussion She almost ruined a proposal.

This was at Crescent Bay Point Park, which allows people to book it special occasions.

Every time I see this meme I am brought back to being a server at a breakfast joint waiting hand and foot every Sunday on the most demanding, insufferable “bathed in his blood” ass elders who would leave literal pocket change for their weekly ritual torture.

179

u/Bulky-Hamster7373 18h ago

Omg I was a server for years back in the 80s and it got to the point I REFUSED Sunday morning schedules because the customer base was always the low tipping patronizing, entitled bag of dicks crowd from church.

75

u/CaptainofFTST 17h ago

Amen to that. My now wife was the hostess, and she’d sit the worst repeat offenders at the furthest tables, and the wobbliest chairs to entice them to leave.

33

u/based_miss_lippy 16h ago

Now whenever I’m sat at a wobbly table or chair I will think I’ve done something wrong

4

u/sinnersaint66 13h ago

awww. I'm not sure if I should laugh or feel bad 😬

4

u/based_miss_lippy 12h ago

It was meant to make you laugh 😘

Place I worked (kitchen crew) in college, the Sunday church crowd was so miserable that all the front of house crew finally just refused to work that shift. Management threatened & blustered but everyone held firm, told the managers they could all come in and work the floor if they needed the place open so badly. Two weeks of that and they switched to closed on Sundays.

2

u/ehoffman56 13h ago

I’ve been working as a chef in the kitchen, aka no customer interaction, most of my life, and even back here we say f brunch…

1

u/Careless-Weather8877 16m ago

My mom would always make me we go to ihop during church so we avoided them… now I get why

144

u/merryjoanna 17h ago

I had a regular we nicknamed John the Baptist. He'd come in every Sunday and order a coffee for $1.90. and he'd leave a $0.10 tip. He'd take the table up for hours sometimes, with whoever he decided to bring with him to talk at about religion. By the end of it, with all the free refills, he'd go through about a pot of coffee. I don't know where he kept getting people who were willing to listen to him. But I did notice that nobody came back twice. The waitresses would all fight over who didn't have to deal with him that day. He was so horrible that I still think about how goddamn horrible he was all these years later. It's been 23 years since I worked there. He's the only one I remember.

36

u/Top_Bumblebee5510 15h ago

That's actually my uncles in name in French, Jean Baptiste. He's a gross pervert. My one cousin spotted his profile on Tinder. Another has seen him on dates. He's been married for over 50 years.

3

u/Snoringdragon 12h ago

I once met a man named John LeBastard. Very cool guy, funny, down to earth. You gotta wonder about names...

2

u/Top_Bumblebee5510 12h ago

That's an awesome name.

3

u/Ftwlatino69 13h ago

Sounds accurate for these POS people

Years and years ago i worked at a small restaurant cafe that was across a church.

The thing survived because of the church, most of the week we would see 80 people max but on sunday we were always packed overfull.

People came after church to eat lunch around 11.00 with us while drinking alcohol and more than half stayed till we would close at 21.00 , they would lunch, have diner and would what we call 'borrel' in between and after dinner (think charcuterie board with diffrent meats, deepfried dished, cheeses, some fruits, mostly done while drinking alcohol) all while consuming a insane amount of alcohol.

They would spent hundreds per table and be so drunk at the end of the day you could see some still trying to stumble home when we were done. My boss would always say that 'they were forgiven for their sins, time for new ones'

That's been going on for ages, but one thing that really caught me off guard was CPAC back in 2021 where they pulled this shit.

P. S. Something Something graven images, and all that jazz.

He looks like some kind of redneck-clown king. Utterly hideous lol. It represents them well come to think of it.

3

u/Idustriousraccoon 14h ago

Saw an article bemoaning the closing of hundreds of thousands of churches coming in the US. I just wanted to cheer.

1

u/thinkthingsareover 13h ago

The amount of people who have stopped attending regularly over the last 2 decades definitely tells a story.

Private Eye cartoon from back in January.

1

u/AbsurdWallaby 14h ago

To be fair, Jesus acknowledged trickle-down faith but it was also given out freely and infinitely so we have a bit of a conundrum.

25

u/GhostOfAbba 17h ago

Bar on Saturday, church on Sunday. Wheel in the sky keeps on turning.

3

u/Ultrace-7 16h ago

They don't know where they'll be tomorrow. That's why they go to church.

2

u/Troublemaker2172 13h ago

As Jimmy Buffet wrote, there’s a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

2

u/That_Golf9029 17h ago

How did they behave, though? Probably if they did that every weekend it cost a fortune and they wouldn't want to tip well on top of it. But if they were good guests, this could be great! My hunch is no...

3

u/The_Salty_nugget Make Furries Illegal 16h ago

They were people, some nice, some assholes, some had a good day and some not, alot of them got more annoying when getting more drunk.

Most of them had quite some money in the bank but where i life tipping is not nececary because you could life a normal life with what you made, tips were just a bonus compliment.

The most annoying part for me was the singing and preaching some did and it got worse the more drunk they got.(but to be fair i most of the time think people who drunkenly shoutely 'sing' in public are quite annoying)

I myself am not a religious person and was/still am a punker/metalhead so some tried to convert me sometimes when they got hammerd but there would also most of the time be those who told those people to just let me be and respect me as i am.

2

u/pubesinourteeth 16h ago

Damn that sounds like a great Sunday

2

u/passerby4830 16h ago

'Borrel' hello fellow Dutchie. (Or maybe Belgian friend)

1

u/mkultron89 16h ago

Throw a tv with a football game on and that sounds like a pretty good Sunday.

953

u/wildwildwaste 17h ago

I got fired from being a busboy at four of these joints when I was 16 (1995ish) for various issues on Sundays, the worst being pouring a half full pitcher of water on top of a couple who wouldn't stop giving a pregnant server shit because her hair was dyed purple.

I learned pretty quick that I wasn't cut out for customer facing roles.

425

u/twigge30 17h ago

Doin the lord's work there dude. (Irony intended, not sarcasm.)

105

u/Careful-Agent4715 15h ago

i was a server for a bit and worked on mother’s day. one customer was like this, just a nasty woman making everyone’s day awful and i just so happened to knock her pepsi all over her. her children looked both thrilled and terrified, but it was a win for me!

71

u/Reflexlon 14h ago

Mother's day is a special hell. I remember a woman walking past a line of like three dozen pickup customers and screaming at a 17 year old about how they ruined the most important day of her life because she didn't have time to wait for her togo order she called in that she wanted brought out to her car. It took 25 minutes instead of the 15 online told her, and she already had been given her food, she just had to come in and make sure everyone knew that she had the emotional regulation of a small child.

Valentines is like this too. I think there are a lot of people who only go out once or twice a year and do not know how to act in public lol. I feel bad for them being so improperly socialized, kinda like a mistrained dog.

4

u/_Sahara_Rose_ 11h ago

As a mother with a mother, I refuse to engage in Mother's Day brunch for either of us. If we want brunch, we do it another day or make it at home. It's solely for the reason that I will lose my shit on another customer and their treatment of a service worker. I only worked at McDonald's in my youth for restaurant experience, but I understand how hard it is and how little they get paid (even with tips). I once watched a server get berated by a customer next to me even though I saw they were being kind and professional. When the customer left, I inserted myself and asked if they left a tip (they did not), so I gave the server what cash I had (I think ~$15 - there were two people eating at the table). Shits bad, there's no reason to take it out on someone trying to survive.

222

u/MostlyRightSometimes 16h ago

Your customer service skills sound fine to me.

21

u/No-Kitchen5212 13h ago

certainly served that customer what they were asking for

10

u/TheChildrensStory 15h ago

If I saw that I would’ve left a bigger tip and become a regular.

10

u/yorgasor 14h ago

It sounds like their previous baptism didn’t take and you were just trying to help them with another one. Why would they fire you for that?!

5

u/1991K75S 14h ago

I worked at every level of restaurant service and was goddamn good at it including charm, wit, food knowledge at dives, pubs, and hoity toity joints and let me assure you that it never got less strenuous dealing with the public. You made the right choice.

I'm out now and have been for a long time:

People generally are going out for a nice time but they occasionally seem to ruin it for themselves. Ultimately we evolved from animals and we have all the animal requirements for self preservation that make us shitty when we are hungry or stressed etc. and we take that out on the busboy/waiter/bartender.

Once I was a bartender it was better but still not perfect but I had a schtick that worked for me which was to engage the troublesome customers with a fictional anecdote about myself told in an amusing way that distracted them from their own shit. It 99% worked great.

People are children.

1

u/HomeMadeWhiskey 12h ago

Please share your disarming anecdote!

1

u/1991K75S 8h ago edited 8h ago

It was always a little different with parts I made up that were interchangeable. Often involving a beautiful girl who was too good for me breaking my heart by kicking me to the curb. I would use my regulars as foils and they all were somehow part of the story.

No one really knew anything about me.

(There was always morsels of truth cobbled together just to make it more believable).

1

Reading into it a bit. Sundays were our busiest days, I was a jerk who didn't put up with assholes (probably because of some transference stuff).

1

u/BioExtract 14h ago

I’d have given you a promotion for taking the initiative

1

Shitty customers weren't cut out for you facing roles.

1

I'd have given you a raise lol. You didn't use the hot coffee

1

u/spicewoman 8h ago

I used to collect those little "good news, you're going to hell!" tracts like pokemon, would get one once a week at least. Then I dyed my hair blue and purple, and NO ONE leaves me them any more. It's been years. I'm too much of a godless heathen to try to save anymore, I guess. XD

1

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 8h ago

I’d rather cut grass all day in the sun than deal with customers

I don’t have the ability to mask as much as it takes for continuous customer facing roles

70

u/Dereg5 18h ago

If I give 10% to God why would I give 10% to you? I hate Sunday people at restaurant so bad. Also their kids are the worse.

31

Because I actually exist.

2

3

u/SufficientExcellence 16h ago

Yes!!!! They were the ones smearing spaghetti on the wall and screaming before their parents left me…the change rounded up on their bill as a tip. Took ages to get the booth cleaned for the next round.

1

u/No-Individual-3681 17h ago

The worst, too

1

u/FoodInFrige_HopeSo 14h ago

Worse than what?

1

u/Careless-Weather8877 12m ago

Hey what do you want. I want a breakfast burrito

Ok why don’t you pay me 20% when I never made it

Not sure why servers exist

60

u/CaptainofFTST 17h ago

Right? We did a buffet. The most miserable, cheap, and racist fuckers in the world were these church loving freaks. I stopped going to church because of these people. We made sure the regular cunts always got the table furthest from the buffet, and that they had the smallest plates, wobbly table, and chairs. Anything to get them to leave and go anywhere else.

220

u/Icy_Fish_2154 18h ago

Gotta love the fake $20 with a Bible verse inside.

51

u/blahblahshowmeurcat 17h ago

I legit have received these. Used to waitress at a Red Lobster in semi rural Texas when I was super young. Fuck em all.

45

u/BurntTFOuttaHere 16h ago

I was a young waitress near Nevada/Utah border where Mormons would sneak over to drink and gamble lol.

One old couple left me a stack of change “pyramid”, stacked by size largest to smallest coin.

Worst part is instead of just being dicks and leaving, they called me over to show me how clever the husband was with his little coin pyramid and pointed out the quarter on bottom, dime on top, 4 coin 41 cent total tip lol. As if he was a 4 year old with a clever idea.

Then… while trapped in this awkward hell… they told me the real tip wasn’t money. The real tip is they want to bear their testimony… I. Hate. Religion.

4

u/wthwtfwthwtf-_- 14h ago

Lol it's dark triad personality types. Across the board, religious or not. But give them dogmas and they're even worse.

3

u/BurntTFOuttaHere 11h ago

Omg I’m gonna go read more into that because it’s soooo true but I’ve never dived deep into connecting the dots completely. Thanks! They seem to concentrate in religions because it provides cover, and they love feeding off easy prey!

3

u/Inroundtents 13h ago

You let me know when testimony fills my kids' stomachs.

2

u/SymmetricalFeet 12h ago

I was imagining a whole pyramid like a stack of cards or those sport cups, with multiple quarters at the base, not just quarter + nickel + penny + dime atop each other. That's a stack! Not a pyramid!

Also, fuck them because the grocery store doesn't sell produce for testimonies. The landlord won't accept it as rent. Unless Jesus is gonna personally come and hand over bread & fish...

1

u/BurntTFOuttaHere 11h ago

Yeh it’s crazy. Like if you wanna leave $5 in quarters, ok lol. But no, this was a tiny pyramid of one coin each lol. And they thought they were clever and cute! Fucking crazy ass religious nutters.

3

u/thinkthingsareover 16h ago

I remember getting my first one in Lubbock.

2

u/wirefox1 14h ago

I spent three days in Lubbock years ago. I still remember how great the food was in restaurants tho. Yum.

1

u/thinkthingsareover 13h ago

Out of all the restaurants I miss from the south Waffle House is the one I miss most.

1

u/wirefox1 13h ago

The best Mexican food I've ever to this day was in Lubbock, TX.

So there. I've eaten my way across the United States. Texas has the best food.

76

u/Guy-1nc0gn1t0 17h ago

That's why you serve them fake waffles with a humanist quote inside

22

u/Glazing555 16h ago

They should be banned from the restaurant. People that do that are fucking assholes, but call them out and they play victim

1

u/a_man_and_his_box 3h ago

Agreed. We saw on Reddit recently some posts from restaurants that have photo walls of all the people who ran out on their bill. Why not extend that wall to include people who meanly trick the servers with fake tips? You don't want them there either, so call them out, refuse to serve them.

28

u/ShakeThemOff_Claire 16h ago

That shit radicalized me when I was 19 and trying to pay rent. Like, now I'm supposed to want to go hang out with these weird liars?

-16

u/dsubandbeard 17h ago

I once saw a fake $20 advertising atheism in the offering plate.

13

u/stevecostello 17h ago

I’ll take $20 for “Things That Never Happened”

Shit, sorry, got lost; must have taken a left turn in Albuquerque.

11

What's advertising atheism?

20

u/What-fresh-hell 17h ago

4

u/Guy-1nc0gn1t0 16h ago

So the people putting bible quotes as a tip are the true geniuses

2

u/BurntTFOuttaHere 16h ago

I’ve never seen the atheism ones. What types of messages did it have on it?

36

u/HieroglyphicEmojis 17h ago

I saw that happen once at a diner and I left $100 on the table. I was with my husband and child.

The “elders” were like a group of 12. Some of the words flying out of their faces - they were like talking trash about a woman who clearly wasn’t there.

Remember it so clearly. I was not going to let them squabble over coins for tips. Hopefully it helped that server. And I didn’t even go to church ;) I just help where I can.

54

u/ConflictMaster3155 18h ago

Shit like this is why the whole Waffle House menu has changed.

There are basically no food options that are less than $5 so you pretty much have to leave a whole $1 tip. Like you can’t just get an egg anymore, the cheapest 3 things on the menu are:

Hasbrowns $4+ (w/ cheese is $4.50, double is $5)

Waffle $5

Two Egg Breakfast $7.

Pre-Covid I knew people that would go in WH sit there for an hour reading or jaw-jacking, and get a $1 egg and a $0.80 coffee and leave like a 15% tip which is: A MF QUARTER.

-8

u/PensivePotamus 17h ago

None of that matters if the tip is optional anyway

4

u/Spread_Liberally 14h ago

Don't be thick, you know it's not.

37

u/Granolag23 17h ago

This is why I loved my last restaurant job where we controlled the music and the owners loved what we loved. So it was always Slayer Sundays. Didn’t deter enough but it tamed their expectations.

My favorite part was always the people you could tell were bothered by it most, their kids seemed to enjoy it most. There would be like nicely dressed, hair gelled 8 year olds literally head banging and parents just looking down at the table.

15

u/PhunkyPhysics 18h ago

The is is mine and every other servers experience, I swear. Table full of assholes, here’s your $1!

2

u/wirefox1 14h ago

Yall. If you are going to be a server, you have to get a job where wealthy people eat.

I've only had one and it was in a restaurant that Joe Namath owned, and yes he dropped in once in a while.

Most of the people in there eating expensive steaks were older rich white men. They were old and rich, I was young and broke, but pretty. They would leave me $100 tips after they had had their fill of bourbon. I made a bundle there, but graduated from the university and got a job in my profession when I then became officially broke.

14

u/Dreamlion_Inc 17h ago

Going to church for them isn’t “walking with Christ” but more so “hey God forgives me every Sunday for being a terrible fucking person! Got another 6 days of showing my ass to the world before I rinse and repeat”

3

u/SufficientExcellence 16h ago

I swear they only go so they can hold it over everyone else’s head, or avoid being gossiped about by the parishioners in attendance.

5

u/literally_lemons 16h ago

When I was way younger I was working early shifts on Sunday mornings. This one morning I’m in the subway on my way to work trying to get back a few minutes of sleep, when this lady taps my shoulder and points at my bags on the seat next to me, meaning she wanted me to move them for her to sit down. I execute still half asleep, look up: the wagon was nearly empty, but apparently she NEEDED to wake me up and make me move my bags.

On this she proceeds to take out a bible and read it lol

6

u/phonefellin_lakeerie 16h ago

The brewery I work at won’t ever be open on Sundays again, the after church crowd are significantly the rudest, most demanding people and they never tip well.

2

u/BEconcubine_no3685 16h ago

That’s awesome for FOH as it’s rarely worth the effort. Every spot I’ve worked at the owners couldn’t pass up the after church crowd.

6

u/phonefellin_lakeerie 16h ago

We have a decent owner! We tried Sundays a few different times, but inevitably after a few shifts servers would start making their Sundays unavailable, so we couldn’t even staff well enough to keep up with demand. Plus, the rate of food “mess ups” was noticeably higher, and we operate on small margins for food so when a table of 12 wants 5 things remade or refunded AND they are rude to workers to a point of nearly making them quit- Sundays were just not worth it.

He loses some revenue, but the amount he actually saves by not having to replace burnt out staff is definitely greater.

5

u/sittinwithkitten 17h ago

I used to work at Swiss Chalet years ago. I refused to work Sundays for this reason. They would run you ragged for free refills and hot water for their tea bag.

5

u/mrshyphenate 16h ago

Had one once, whole table was mean to me except the youngest son who was in his late teens. He was polite, not demanding, generally nice. They stiffed me completely, but when cleaning the table, I found several dollars in quarters stacked under his napkin. I've never forgotten him.

3

u/pale-greenn 17h ago

Used to work at a popular deli restaurant and Sundays were the absolutely worst days of the week. Church crowds were more rude, messy, and loud than the kid’s eat free nights.

2

u/BEconcubine_no3685 16h ago

Bro and the state of the BATHROOMS afterward was always so disturbing

3

u/bigdaddydopeskies131 17h ago

Dude I still have PTSD from being a dishwasher at hometown buffet. Sundays were horrible tbh. They just waste a lot of food and make a damn mess, even worse out location was just down the street from the local church.

3

u/Right-Bunch5409 16h ago

Used to work at Chili’s, adding a “god bless” when I dropped off the check increased my tips by 10%, although sometimes after saying it you will get sucked into a sermon, the last guy was like 70 and told me he was excited to hang out with me in heaven though 🥺

3

u/Miserable-Clock-6944 16h ago

Unfortunately as a believer myself there are so many cheap & greedy ass people in church. One of many reasons I don’t go to one really. Srry you had to experience insufferable fakes and or zealots.. it’s really just a part of life at this point though. Knew a guy who’d go to every church lunch but never pay & always joke he ain’t going to anything unless someone else is paying. I guess it’snot the worst thing but it’s an annoying trait to me personally.

3

u/iameveryoneelse 16h ago

God I hated the Sunday shift when I was a server in college. I knew I’d be working hard all day for $5 an hour because they came in hordes and the lot of them didn’t know how to tip.

I even got one of those fake 20s with Bible verses once. Nothing turns you off to Christianity like serving the Sunday after church crowd. Which is pretty rich when you really think about it considering the guy they claim to follow washed everyone’s feet as a lesson in the value of serving others.

3

u/tetrochromac 16h ago

Pocket change or fake money that tells you to go to church.

I work retail and sometimes there'll be a little old lady who says she wants to give me something and hands me one of their little fucking "you're going to hell" brochures. That or a woman will have her smiling kid give me one. These bitches target workers because they know you can't say anything to them. You're essentially a captive. If you decline they'll throw a tantrum and go to management about you being "rude". When they get their kids to give you it, they know you can't say anything to a kid. Of course I just throw their garbage out right away or after mocking it with likeminded people later, but it sucks being forced into taking it. There's nothing you can do to turn it around on Christians.

2

u/kittytailstory 16h ago

Ah, the old fake ten dollar bill "Here's a Tip for You!" tract. Serving the post-church crowd was the worst part of being a server.

2

u/acinonyc 16h ago

I feel ya… My deal was always. I’ll double on Saturday. Just don’t make me work the Sunday morning shift.

2

u/cosmosmariner_ 16h ago

This is so true

2

u/cheechaw_cheechaw 15h ago

Literally what made me begin to question my faith as a young woman and eventually abandon it.

2

u/Technical-Finish304 15h ago

My wife and i worked in restaurants for 15+ years together. You aren't exagerating. Now we give back by going to as many of those little libraries in different neighborhoods and pulling all the religious books so they never see the light of day again.

2

u/Sir_PressedMemories 15h ago

Worked at a local pizza/pasta joint (LaRosas) just out of the military.

Every Sunday the assholes would come in and take every single seat in the place. They would order the unending spaghetti bowl, and despite it not being for sharing, a table of four would order 1 and then share it with the other 3.

And of course despite me being the only server on at that time and seeing me putting in thousands of steps an hour, they would not top for shit; I would constantly get those fake 20 and 50 dollar bill religious tracts.

One Sunday I snapped; I was done with the bullshit, greeted folks as always, when only one person ordered the spaghetti and no one else at the table was hungry, I reminded them that sharing was not allowed and went on about my business. But as I worked, I noted each table that shared and charged them for the appropriate number of people eating the same thing.

I was cordial, I was pleasant, I did my job, glasses never got below half, tables were prebussed, and I was attentive.

But holy shit, the shitstorm when they all got their checks and were being appropriately charged for the food they ate—it was glorious.

The manager was a bit mad at me for it because he had to deal with a bunch of angry churchgoers, but Sunday was traditionally a loss day, and this day we were actually in the black.

I did this every single week after that, some of the groups did not come back, but most of them did, and most of them began ordering what they actually wanted and enjoyed a nice lunch, some of them still tried to sneakily share, and I charged them appropriately.

Also, one of the cooks was a member of that church and took all the fake money tracts I had collected and turned them into the collection plate, which, from what I was told, really pissed off the preacher. Then he had a whole special sermon about how fucking horrible those things were, and that if he caught any of his parishioners leaving them as tips, he would personally have a conversation with each one of them.

I still got them as tips once in a great while, but rarely was it ever by itself, and usually it was with a good cash tip.

in college I was a server at a cheap steakhouse... in utah. A standard occurance: Mormon party of 25, $2 tip.

"Gave all my money to the church, got nothing for you. And are you SURE this is decaf?"

Right there with you 😅

I am so thankful that I did not grow up in an area ruled by Christianity.

Yep, and then after making you run circles for them while they insult you, they reach into their purse and pull out an actual fucking nickel and give it to you like they just handed you a million dollars.

Over on the Tales from your server sub that is a regular thing. After church people are rude, insulting, and either never tip or leave those fake bills with Bible quotes. Plus they ask why the server is working on a Sunday, while they are there being served on a Sunday.

Or worse, a pamphlet about being saved instead of a tip.

I was a server in college and I would intentionally not work Sundays to dodge this crowd. Always turned into working my ass off for a $.50 tip on a $50 bill.

God yes. I worked at BWW in high school and everyone would fight over who had to work Sunday lunches for this reason.

“Remember everyone, the 10% tithing is ON TOP of your your sub 20% tip…”

And they always roll through lat least 15 deep, and all on separate checks

My favorite was refilling coffee, getting refused by someone, and inevitably be scolded by them 5 minutes later for not having “topped them off” yet

But they’re good Christians, they gave their tithes to their pastor to be absolved of their sins.

Never mind listening to the bible about loving thy neighbor.

The “Lord” brought to you by King James version # whatever. Bow servant

Bringing back old memories. I forgot I referred to that day as Sunday Funday in jest.

In high school I worked at Subway in the tiny rural town I grew up in. Sunday morning was the absolute worst shift because the after church crowd would come in and nearly every single person was as rude and condescending and as horrible as they possibly could be. Like the confession booth gives a clean slate to be an absolute asshole. I hated it.

Same. We would always say, "the Baptist's are coming! The Baptist's are coming!" And the pocket change when we were "earning" $2.13/hr made it even worse.

All servers know horror of church goers, they’re the absolute worst

Or that fake bill with a bunch of religious nonsense on it. Unbelievable.
