Meta Welcome to r/Malaysians!

Hello folks and welcome to r/Malaysia's sister sub, r/Malaysians!

For those who just clicked in and is wondering what the sub is for: This sub is essentially for Malaysians to talk and post about any other topics beyond Malaysia. Here is where you can post images, videos, create and join conversations and threads revolving anything that isn't quite about Malaysia but needs a Malaysian take on it, and more! Oh and this is a race, politic and religion-free sub 🙌🏻

Most major subreddits such as r/AITA, r/JustnoMIL, r/relationship_advice, r/casualconversation, r/malefashionadvice, r/Teenagers and what have you are usually centralised around people who reside outside of SEA and may not be valid to us locally and culturally but yet the demand for it isn't wide enough to sustain its own subreddit. r/Malaysians would (hopefully) be a good place for a catch-all of such threads.

We will be coming up with contest weeks soon, as well as accepting any other ideas you guys might have for the sub, so stay tuned! We are also still tweaking design and appearances as we go. Meanwhile, everyone is encouraged to start posting what they think fits the sub to get the ball rolling :)

Much love, r/Malaysia mod team.

tldr; r/CasualUK but for Malaysia.

Casual Conversation 🎭 For those who work in companies, have you ever known or seen a colleague or intern who had just entered the workforce and was absolutely terrible at their job?

• Upvotes

I understand that beginners who have just started working need time to adjust and get used to the workplace. However, I'm asking about colleagues or interns who have been working for several months and still seem to struggle significantly with their job, even though they studied that field in university.

I don't know, maybe I'm just being paranoid. I recently finished an introductory class and the lecturer was very blunt and realistic about workplace expectations. They talked a lot about how even small mistakes can have serious consequences and how people might become frustrated with you if you keep making errors.

It left me wondering whether there are actually people who enter the workforce and continue to perform poorly despite having the relevant education and how common that situation really is.

Casual Conversation 🎭 An unexpected night out...

Wanted to stop by a café with my family for dinner tonight, but our favourite dish was sold out. So we went to a hawker centre within walking distance instead.

The hawker centre is non-halal, serving both Chinese and Indian food. But the nice thing about the place was the atmosphere. There was a Malay busker with a great voice, singing while a Chinese couple kept cheering him on. He sang in three different languages. A big Sikh family was occupying one of the larger tables, and they even dedicated a few songs.

Everyone seemed to be enjoying the music.

Just as we finished our food, the busker suddenly started singing a song that struck a chord with everyone. Some people cheered. The song was "Saya Anak Malaysia."

My dad took some money out of his wallet and gave it to the busker.

Ask Malaysians Planning to resign, however need to serve 3 months notice period. Haven’t secured a job yet.

hi I’m F23 currently working in a top generic pharmaceutical company in Malaysia. I want to resign because I genuinely feel like, I’m not a fit for this job anymore. I have a degree in Life sciences.. but still a baby in terms of career experience.

I hit my YTD target last year, but this year has been shitty. It’s my first sales job, I aced it at first.. but soon the reality caught up to me and I found myself completely burnt out.

this job definitely shaped me in so many ways! But I really can’t do It for long term.

I haven’t landed any job yet.. what is your suggestion? Help me out.

Ask Malaysians Those of you who found love after 35, how did it happen?

Asking because I'm 35 and I'm tired of dating apps, speed dating, pickleball and tabletop sessions. I have been trying maybe the last 10 years with no success. I'm looking to hear some experiences that I might find hopeful.

Ask Malaysians not sure if it's a coincidence but my kid's mood has seemed more stable lately and trying to figure out why

noticed something over the past few weeks and can't tell if i'm just imagining a pattern or if something actually changed

my kid used to have these afternoon crash outs, like he'd be fine then suddenly irritable over nothing, snapping at small stuff, way more meltdowns than felt normal for his age. wasn't every day but often enough that i started dreading that window of the afternoon

a few things changed around the same time though so i genuinely can't isolate what actually caused it, which is the annoying part. we adjusted his sleep schedule slightly, cut back a bit on screen time, and i also started being more consistent about making sure he's actually getting a decent diet instead of just whatever's easiest to feed him in the moment

been reading a bit about what actually affects kids' mood regulation and omega 3 kept coming up, apparently there's some research tying it to mood and behavior in kids, not just the usual brain development talk you hear about for babies. wasn't something i had really looked into before since i always associated it with infant stuff

anyway the timing lines up roughly with when things started feeling calmer but i genuinely can't tell if it's the omega 3 angle, the sleep stuff, less screen time, or just a phase passing on its own. kids are such a mess of variables

curious if anyone else has noticed something similar or looked into the mood/omega 3 connection specifically. also just generally interested in what's helped with the afternoon crankiness thing if anyone's dealt with it, feels like such a universal parenting experience

Advice ☎️ Feel like I am being sidelined at work - Need advice

Hi everyone, I’m a fresh graduate working for an international startup here in Msia. The HQ is overseas, and my direct supervisors are there, so I don't have much day-to-day supervision or mentorship locally.

I've been here almost a year and have recently made multiple big mistakes which has left stains in my position in the company:

  1. I submitted a report incorrectly because I missed out on the required template. My supervisor overseas was at a conference and couldn't review it beforehand. It wasn’t checked before a client meeting so the work was presented to the client, and it was pretty embarrassing for my HOD - who is also a C-level exec (he was very upset).
  2. I volunteered to do a part that’s outside my job scope for a project, but because I had to research and learn a lot from scratch, I was eventually complained about for being too slow (for context, I was stuck on a problem for a week and a half and it was more of a methodology problem and not a straightforward one that AI could solve)
  3. Was called out in a small (but deadly) mistake in the algorithm that was used in a work for a collaborator and wasn’t aware as I wasn’t the one who wrote the main algorithm in the code and I was only responsible for tweaking the implementation so it works on the collaborator’s dataset. This wasn’t highlighted until the collaborator called it out. For additional context, all this has been crossed check with my supervisor and I was not expecting a mistake in the code at all (maybe I should have checked the code myself beforehand as soon as I joined the company).
  4. I wrote an email with an inadequate explanation about the framework (algorithm that was not responsible by me) to the same collaborator after my supervisor had left the company, which I regret, as it has sort of left a bad impression of my company. A senior staff is aware of this as he asked to be kept in the loop but my HOD is not aware of it for now.

I do take responsibility for these mistakes and have learned from them, but I'm now worried I've developed a bad reputation and may be getting sidelined, especially since these mistakes have affected my HOD. Since I’m not in the HQ, it is also difficult to showcase how hard I’ve been working and how much sleep and personal time I have sacrificed just to self-learn so many concepts by myself.

Hence, I’m wondering if it’s too late to salvage my career in this company and if it’s time for me to find somewhere else to go to. Personally I wish to stay in this company as it’s a niche industry that I would like to be in.

Would appreciate advice from people who are in managerial roles or have experienced anything similar throughout their careers.

Casual Conversation 🎭 Are you guys planning to take leave and play GTA6 this Nov?

Because I am, for 5 days.

But seriously whenever I bring up the topic of the GTA6 with my friends or even at some close colleagues at work, it seems they don't share the same enthusiasm as me. Even if they ''claim'' they play video games as well.

Dunno lah korang, I know its just a game but we (or some of us) waited so long for this game to release. Sometimes to the point where even mentioning it makes me the odd one socially.

I feel like playing this game makes me a tiny minority in Malaysia though, either people do not know well enough of this kind of genre or they know but couldn't be bothered.

Just wondering if anyone here is having the same excitement as I am? I am super looking forward to it.

Mildly Menarik The goonch catfish, a river monster from the East Coast

Post image
39 Upvotes

Bagarius lica, ikan kenerak or the Indochinese goonch catfish.

An apex predator that grows to 200 cm and 100 kg. Lives in fast-flowing upstream sections of the Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang river basins.

They prefer wide, deep, turbulent river channels, rocky gorges, and rushing rapids with high levels of dissolved oxygen. Hiding under rocks in deep pools to ambush prey.

They use their sharp teeth to grip their prey before swallowing them whole and alive. They are even known to eat human corpses.

Adults have no natural predators and are the apex of the food chain in their native rivers. Their mottled patterning perfectly helps them camouflage among rock shadows, especially in turbulent water.

In the comments is a 75 kg individual.

Ask Malaysians LOOKING FOR ADVICE ON SELLING MY DSLR CAMERA – MALAYSIA

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to sell my DSLR camera and would appreciate some advice, especially from people who have experience buying or selling used cameras in Malaysia.

The camera is:

  • Model: Canon EOS 750D
  • Condition: Used, but still functional
  • Lens: kits lens
  • Issue: The built-in sound/microphone is not in very good condition. Other than that, the camera is still usable for photography.
  • Location: Selangor, Malaysia

I’m wondering:

  1. What would be a reasonable selling price for this camera?
  2. Is it better to sell it directly on Carousell/Facebook Marketplace, or to a camera shop?
  3. How much should I reduce the price because of the microphone/audio issue?
  4. What should I include in the listing to make it more trustworthy to potential buyers?

I’m planning to be transparent about the camera’s condition and any issues.

Would appreciate any advice from experienced buyers/sellers. Thanks!

Ask Malaysians Landlords can you take your agent to court after a bad tenant?

• Upvotes

Maybe you saw my last question about how landlords are suffering now with bad tenants. I've seen it all over the news right but the more I think about it, the more annoyed I get.

My "bad tenant" didn't pay for 4 months, at that point i was out so much money I kicked them out and just moved on. She can't even pay me 2000 a month, what's the point of taking her to court right, and I already lost 10k from no rent and damage to fix. OH AND she apparently was a lawyer hahahahaha.

Now I know better. But even if my tenant can't pay me, I relied on an agent to fill my unit. This agent took plenty of fees from me and even the tenant but now I'm actually thinking what did he even do? I got headache because he didn't check the tenant was good or not for me and I relied on him right? Like he scammed me? He took my money and lied to my face "she's a lawyer, of course she can pay". I maybe didn't ask enough questions but I paid him for his professional fees and what was professional about no ren for 4 months?

So now my question is, what if I took the agent or agency to court? I know he can pay, at least with the amount I gave him hahaha. Its been 6 months and I'm ready to rent out again but I'm still angry with everything so does anyone know if this is even possible or if I'd win? ChatGPT said yeah but I want a bit more human discussion
I know it will cost me a lot for lawyer but worth it, especially when i know he can pay right?

Dating | Relationship 🌷 Did I make the right choice

I am in my early 20s and still in uni. My first ever girlfriend and I broke up after a year, not because we fell out of love, but because of the harsh reality of being an interfaith couple here.

People always say "just convert for paper" like it is nothing. But seeing how permanent and legally binding it is, I just couldn't do it. At the same time, the family pressure is crushing me as an anchor child in a single parent home, and the thought of breaking my mom's heart makes it very hard for me to just convert. However I do have two older siblings than me to take care of my mom.

It has been 60+ days, and I still have to see her in class every day which is absolute torture. My biggest fear is that I will never find anyone who gets me like she did, or that I ruined my only chance at a real connection.

Will I ever be better again!?

Mildly Menarik Metup with a Chinese girl on Tinder, took me to a bar nearby IOI Puchong Mall

Gonna repost here

She insist to go to a bar and order her beer. She even said she can AA which is BLEHHH

Literally, the beer she wanted to call is ¥128/cup like WTH. The waiter who's a Chinese waiter even say the minimum is 6 cup. The menu is all in Yuan too 😭

Update: I left already and she is idling around the Pelita mamak waiting for her next prey I think.

After some unhappy back & forth, she said "Fine, I wanna go back and end our date". So I walked out and follow her, she show me to a car Mechanic. LMAO I think she also promoting the China Mechanic outlet.

Btw, after leaving the bar I even ask if she wants to hangout with me at mamak and I will treat her but responded in her disgust, "Eww, indian people I dont want" 😭

Mildly Menarik Ikan puting beliung, seen in a river while snorkelling

Post image
19 Upvotes

Homaloptera parclitella, ikan puting beliung or red saddleback loach.

Found in oxygen-rich fast-flowing rocky streams of the East Coast and the Bernam, Perak and Muar rivers. To 10 cm long.

It grazes on rich biofilm covering the rocks while also catching any worms and insects.
However it is highly sensitive to mud and pollution and its presence in any stream is a bio-indicator of high water quality.

On Borneo it is replaced by its twin, H. orthogoniata. Both fish are identical in habits and ecology, being sister species. They only differ physically by the pattern on their backs.

Some people call them red lizard loaches due to the way they seem to crawl on the rocks and hop between boulders. They tend to avoid directly swimming in the strong flow of their habitats.

Looking to buy Western Boxing gloves in KL/Selangor.

Unfortunately most places here sell Muay Thai gloves (yes there is a difference) at quite high markups.

Any trusted shops you guys know of?
