Good Vibes Two generations. One pocket. 🥁
I dont know who had more fun :)

u/WildRabbitz 1d ago
Not only did Grandma have fun and seemed to enjoy herself, but after she was done, just like a typical grandma does, she gives them money to thank them.
This is the fucking sweetest thing I've seen this morning.

u/Ladyhappy 1d ago
She just pulls the wad out of her pocket. She doesn't even count it.
209
u/chiono_graphis 1d ago
Reminds me of how my grandma used to give me a wad of bills. I'd try to refuse but she'd say "shush I know all young people need money. Don't let your mom see it"
120
u/fr3n 1d ago
And giving money hidden in the palm of the hand like a drug deal going down. Damn it, I miss my grandma.
57
u/Neither-Dentist3019 1d ago
Yeah, my grandma would catch me in the hall and go "psst!" "hey! cmere!" and give me money handshake drug deal style. Then she'd say "don't tell your mom" and do that thing where she points at her eyeballs and points at me. Miss her so much.

I saw my granny (my dads mum) slip notes into my mums bra 😂 like here you won't take it? I'll make you take it and down the cleavage it went lol

That was all my Great Uncles when I saw them as a kid. 6 ft tall Sicilian men all giving me $20's like some mob hit was going down. Telling me not to tell my Aunt, who subsequently almost always passed me money either before or after.

Same. Leans in, palms me a couple 20s and either says, “Don’t tell your grandfather” or, my personal favourite, “Be good (then a mischievous glint in her eye) but not TOO good.”
She was the reason I have a sense of humour. I miss her.

Bro my grandma still does this...I'm 37, own a home and make good money. I went over last week to move some things around and carry some stuff upstairs where she just stores things in extra rooms, and as I was leaving I caught her trying to slip a $50 in my pocket.
I was like, "Grandma, I come over because I want to see you. You do not have to give me money for me to come see and help you with things 😂"

You’re so lucky to still have your grandma 🥹 I would say to cherish her, but it sounds like you do 🥰
5
u/NSE_TNF89 1d ago
She's the only grandparent I have left and I certainly do. I see her at least 2-3 times a week.
She loves telling stories and I love hearing them, so it's a win/win 😁

For the lazy and/or young: Phil Collins is a well known drummer and a member of the band Genesis.
36
u/Vintage-Grievance 1d ago
Same Phil Collins who worked on providing soundtracks for Disney films, I presume.
37
→ More replies (2)23
u/TheLordVader1978 1d ago
Ya, him and Elton John pretty much ruled the Disney movie soundtrack back in the 90s
5
u/Vintage-Grievance 1d ago
Agreed.
It was just a different scene in those days, where entertainment was front and center, and marketing was in the backseat- not in the trunk- but it wasn't like you were watching the movie the entire time, going, "That will be on the shelves in Walmart soon".

u/ZhouLe 1d ago
To add: Phil is roughly the same age as the woman in the OP video (75), but hasn't played drums in about 20 years because of health reasons. Many years of touring and performing were rough on him and caused nerve damage in his neck and hands, making it to where he can no longer grip or feel drumsticks in his hands. He toured with Genesis in 2022, though only did vocals, and his son Nic played drums.

u/mcbaginns 1d ago
What a strange way to describe him lol.
He was the lead singer too. He was responsible for the reverb drum sound that all 80s music had. He is one of three musicians to sell over 100 million records as a band member and a solo artist with the other two being Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney.
"he was a drummer and member of a band" tells the uninitiated nothing lol

Looks like a classically trained drummer the way she holds the left stick. Grandma knows what’s she’s doing.

u/breath_ofthemild 1d ago
Band director here. That’s traditional grip, which is used in either jazz bands and corps/show style marching bands. She was in one or the other (very likely both), and if she’s still able to move like this, was an absolute monster. The other guys are great, but Nana in her prime would have absolutely smoked them
82
u/Primary_Assistant742 1d ago
Former DCI drummer here, but a little younger than this woman. (GenX) Had the same thought. We all learned tradish.
15
u/BotulismBanquet 1d ago
I bet memaw won high drums at nats back in the day! (I’m a former Jonz)
9
u/Primary_Assistant742 1d ago
Nice! I was in a much smaller corps, but my instructors were also SCV ( and one was in Blue Devils too ) when they were younger.
This granny is also really short compared to the guys, so the drum is not at all at a natural height for her. Was thinking that on the rewatch.
8
u/BotulismBanquet 1d ago
Yeah and her enthusiasm is so nice! Having a blast trading 4’s with the youth
26
u/tf_inuyasha87 1d ago
The minute I saw the grips, I knew she likely had ages ot performance and training under her belt

She definitely knows what she's doing, but at the 1:28 mark where she gets excited is pure musician recognizing skill. She was having fun but she was having more fun with a skilled dancing partner. Gah I miss music.

I gotta admit, what made me even happier was seeing she was not only jamming, but also had the cogntive/bodily awareness to keep her belongings safe. I'm the kind of idiot who would be tossing my purse aside in a fit of reckless abandonment if I got to jam on the drums with dudes this talented.

u/UnmolestedBell 1d ago
This was so fun to watch. Not enough mentions of the young men that showed respect and let nana do her thing. They treated her with respect from the beginning and when they saw that she knew what she was doing, they sat back and vibed with her. Props to them for bringing an open mind for the way they approached this!

Through Music!
People underestimate how the beauty of music brings us all together, especially people that can play music together.
One of the first instincts a toddler has is to dance to the sweet, beautiful, sound of music.
This is why music and the arts are so important!
11
6
u/Thatguythatdrew 1d ago
Its not just music. Its Art.
The act of creating and then sharing in that creation. Its fundamental social bonding.

u/Downtown_Statement87 1d ago
If you look for stuff like this you can find it everywhere. There's a reason people from all over wanted to come here, and that reason still exists. I refuse to give up on what's good about this place just because a bunch of fascists are currently dumbassing all over.

She tipped at the end AND sported the purse the whole time dropping beats - badass status!
19
u/Shipwrecking_siren 1d ago
There just comes an age when you become one with the purse… it happens both gradually and all of a sudden.
49
u/4444Grains 1d ago
I love the way they trade off playing!
I’m not a musician so I’m not sure if this is something basic any musician can do…but the way they instinctively know when to play solo, when to take over and when to play together (with, obviously, no rehearsal) is so much fun to watch.
34
u/DrThunderbolt 1d ago
Music can kind of be like conversations where theres a certain pattern to it where people naturally know where someone is ending so they can start, or certain indications that they're passing it off to you.
13
u/4444Grains 1d ago
Ah, that makes sense!
I was impressed by how easily the older woman did that—since she probably doesn’t play every day like the younger guys. But, like others have said, it’s muscle memory kicking in!

For not being a musician, you got the name exactly right. This kind of thing is called "trading," typically "trading 8's" or "trading 4's" - meaning every 8 or four measures. I do 8 measures, then you do 8 measures. That's exactly what they were doing here. (with a few missed measures for a bit of showboating) ;)

Though it's not being done out of malice, people keep infantilizing her in the comments. Elderly folks are still capable of doing things with skill. You can tell she was already an experienced and technically proficient musician by the way she plays. And she's still got it 🔥🥁
