It's actually canon that the Doomguy is a celibate Catholic. He's a paladin in Hell. "You're all trapped in here with me!"

I thought he had a wife and a bunny (no relation)?

You can have a wife without getting down in the bedroom, that’s what we call an Asexual Romantic.

Celibate in a catholic sense means unwed

Fairly certain he also had children in at least one of the games.

Never heard of the wife.

She's mentioned into the prologue text blurb of Doom 2 I think.

CS Lewis wrote an entire book about a man who had to debate the devil for the fate of a woman’s soul, and when he realized he was losing he prayed to the Lord for someone to help him, and the Lord told the man he’d give. Him fucking fists for a reason…

“Lord, I fear I cannot save this woman, won’t you please send me someone—“
“No. Punch his fucking lights out, pussy.”

I like this version of God more than any the preachy annoying religious folk offer.

What book is this lmao?

The phrase "fucking fists" leaves some ambiguity there that could lead to rather unforeseen and distressing consequences.

That's why Matt Murdock is the GOAT

shit.. that's why my very devoutly Catholic dad BOUGHT me Doom and Wolfenstein. " might as well kill something evil in your shooty games"

That is how most shooters always were, tbh. GTA and its ilk became so famous precisely because they were the exceptions. For a long time, the median shooter game was about killing Nazis in WW2, it was so common that everyone was tired of it by the early 2000s.

Sander Peterson isn't a great guy, sadly, but his opinions on games (especially ttrpgs) are pretty good

What makes him not great? I'm really curious, I've been playing call of Cthulhu for a lot of my life and I've heard his name come up a few times obviously. Never heard much negative, but I also kept most of my involvement to just playing with my friends.

He really, really buys into mormonism and is a big trump fan. He talks about the US and their enemies as "the good guys and bad guys". If you go on his twitter you'll see him use " bad guys" to describe basically everyone he dislikes. Also a big homophobe, as youd expect with him being so into mormonism.

source: i followed him on twitter for his ttrpg takes for a while.

That sucks to hear. More or less what I expected when I heard he's a Mormon, but still.

Yeah, I enjoyed his twitter for the video game info (albeit somewhat regularly inaccurate, see John Romero) but I had to unfollow because too many tweets were fuckin stupid and the ratio started skewing too far that way for me

I guess that's one good thing you can say about Sandy Petersen.

Among other things.

Was about to say, I think this is the first time I've ever heard the guys name said positively.

Who would have thought that John 'Make You His Bitch' Romero would turn out to be the nice one, all these years later?

7

u/Monarch357 45m ago

Is there something up with Sandy? I barely learned he worked on Doom with this post, before now I just knew him as the Call of Cthulu guy

u/OverseerConey 41m ago

I gather he's generally been bouncing around the world of right-wing anti-work crypto dudes, releasing little bursts of racism here, transphobia there, and so on.

Financed by unfulfilled Kickstarters

The funny thing is that he wasn't even approached by Ion Storm for that ad. He never created it or proposed it himself it just had his name!

if all parents believed in the same "video games lead to violence" trope, there wouldn't be any more good games to play anymore

Sandy Petersen mentioned! Last time this was posted I went and looked because I was only aware of his work as creator of the RPG Call of Cthluhu, but I believe he worked as a level designer on Doom and Doom 2.

Reminds of another screenshot where someone remembered being a young teen when their grandmother caught them playing Doom, and they explained to gramma what the game was about (killing demons and taking the fight to Hell). Their grandmother was quiet for a moment and then quite approving of the game.

Anyway, those of us to remember the Satanic Panic era with Dungeons & Dragons, often laugh about how the very Christian creators changed up all the demon and devil names in an attempt to mollify Christian parents with the 2nd edition of the game.

8

u/samusestawesomus 42m ago

“Not worshiping anything but the chainsaws” ironically points out the one arguable point against this game from a Christian perspective. It is arguably somewhat idolatrous toward the power of extreme violence

2

u/CRowlands1989 12m ago

Right, because Yahweh never promoted extreme violence.

2

u/HollyBananas 7m ago

Well, it's fine when HIS side does it.

13

u/SiIkyToy 1h ago

My mom always just said it promoted violence. I really wanted to kill her whenever she said it.

Don't let her read the Bible.

My favourite story of his is the time people from his church were going door to door warning people about DOOM. They got to his house and he invited them in and they told him about it for several minutes while he was trying not to crack up. Eventually his wife got so embarrassed she told them he worked on it and they turned bright red and quietly left

1

u/The_Screeching_Bagel 26m ago

"had to convince" may imply they succeeded in convincing their parents of this?

One of my earliest memories is playing Doom on my dad’s company laptop that had the little fuzzy dot in the middle that hurt your finger
