Just a reminder that there's no such thing as privacy or anonymity online, tech companies are harvesting your data, the surveillance state is watching, and  AI agents are not your friends and don't love you.

This is why I write my manifesto with good ol pen and paper.

795

u/Simon_Drake 13h ago

Dont include phrases that only you use like "eat your cake and have it". That's how the Unabomber was caught.

570

u/20_mile 13h ago

That's how the Unabomber was caught.

Close, but more specifically, the Unabomber's manifesto (some pretty good ideas in there, actually) was 35,000 words long and the ideas reminded Ted's brother of ideas and concepts that he spoke about during his college years, so the brother went to the FBI and said, "Hey, my brother used to say stuff like this." It wasn't one specific phrase.

476

u/jacobjer 12h ago

Since we’re being technical, it was his brother’s wife who read the phrasing in the Washington Post and alerted her husband.

He then thought the similarities were too much to ignore and then reluctantly called the FBI office.

173

u/jmbirn 10h ago

it was his brother’s wife

Yes, and as it happened the wife was a professional ethicist, so she may have played a large role in helping her husband decide to report his own brother.

169

u/PiccoloAwkward465 10h ago

Good thing they lived in a town with a big ethics factory

113

u/snackers21 9h ago

Technically, it was an ethics mine not a factory.

166

u/koleye2 8h ago

It's only an ethics mine if it's in the Éthique region of France, otherwise it's a sparkling moral quarry.

2

u/TheGhostofWoodyAllen 4h ago

Technically it was a philosophy mine, and ethics just so happened to be a lucrative byproduct of the philosophy mining.

19

u/jmbirn 8h ago

Yes, the local ethics factory was called Union College.

(The UB's sister-in-law was Professor Linda Patrik, a professional ethicist and philosophy professor at Union College in Schenectady, New York.)

2

u/Stargazer-Lilly7305 8h ago

Can I get a hallelujah!!

2

u/PiccoloAwkward465 6h ago

The first time I visited Union my friend came down to open the front door with an enormous bud of weed in his teeth.

58

u/SuitableBlackberry75 9h ago

The wife was a woman, which didn't sit well with the Unabomber. He was an extreme misogynist who would go on epic rants about women (and the wife in particular), which is a big reason the brother's wife was so familiar with the Unabomber's "style". If he had kept some of his rage to himself, he may have avoided capture, or at least avoided capture for a good while longer.

I wonder how she feels about seeing all of her brother-in-law's predictions and fears coming to pass? Like, even if he was wrong about his targets, the stuff he was trying to prevent still sucks, and she has to have to wondered if he was right after all.

edit: I'm wondering about the reading comprehension of some of you. Unibomber was a bad guy. He was also afraid of very real things. When a crazy person is right about some bad things and those bad things he ranted about come to pass, it's human nature to question whether he was right about other things and whether the ends might have justified the means. And an ethicist would very much question the ethics of such a Faustian bargain.

12

u/-LsDmThC- 9h ago

Are you being serious? Any number of his claims could be true without it validating his resulting actions. None of what he did served to prevent what he was arguing against.

18

u/Nielsly 8h ago

He was never going to prevent anything you think he wanted to prevent by killing these people, she most likely did not care in the slightest and I find it disconcerting that you have this many upvotes

2

u/ItsSpaghettiLee2112 6h ago

Holy balls take some reading comprehension classes.

2

u/Wise-Relative-7805 7h ago

-And- she and his brother shared the one million reward. Unabomber was right about technology in quite a few ways. That does not even enter the dialogue?!

The moral of that story is to be an only child, or to share your crazy ideas and political beliefs only with your trusted dog.

The worst the dog will do is go, “Woof, woof, woof!” Then scratch himself, do number two, and go lie down on the comfy rug and sleep until dinner or when he is called. 🐶

Just one more reason to distrust your brother and own a good old dog. 😂

the Unabomber's manifesto (some pretty good ideas in there, actually)

If were being specific -

David Kaczynskis wife Linda read the manifesto in the paper and said it reminded her of Ted. She urged David to read it which he eventually did.

Then David went and found a proto manifesto that Ted had written in college and left at his mothers house

47

u/IMightBeErnest 12h ago

So do include the phrase "eat your cake and have it". Then the police will think the Unabomber did it, instead of you.

15

u/Simon_Drake 11h ago

I was watching Dexter and he's trying so hard to hide the bodies of the people he kills. But what he should be doing is planting evidence to implicate one of his victims, somehow duplicate his fingerprints with silicone stamps and leave hair samples etc. snatch victims from a 10 mile radius of his house or near his office, gym, dry cleaners etc. So when someone finds the bodies the clues all point to some guy that Dexter had decided was a douche anyway, two birds with one stone.

11

u/chaos_nebula 10h ago

There's a scene where he actually writes a manifesto to throw off the scent, and ends up bringing the focus closer to himself.

5

u/RevolutionaryTone738 10h ago

That's why we should all start saying it the way he said it to make the other way weird

1

u/Rotsicle 9h ago

I completely agree. You need to have the cake to eat it, so that order seems rational.

It's like the phrase "if someone tells you who they are, believe them", which is much more popularly said "if someone shows you who they are, believe them".

Like, if there's physical evidence, what am I not believing?

→ More replies (1)

39

u/pcbforbrains 12h ago

I am 43 years old and only this week did I understand what this phrase meant. It means that you can either physically possess cake, or you can eat your cake - but at that point, you won't have cake anymore. Take that as you will.

42

u/Simon_Drake 12h ago

Which is why the Unabomber thought the phrase was backwards. You can have your cake and also eat it, as long as you do it in that order. But if you eat it then you no longer have it. So the phase should be "You can't eat your cake and have it".

And putting weird phrases like that in his manifesto was a sortof linguistic fingerprint that made people say "Hey I know a guy who says crazy shit just like that..."

21

u/Hairy_Difficulty2562 11h ago

he kinda has a point about the phrase being backwards though

It took me far too late into life to understand the as well. Probably because nowadays we often use "have" to mean "eat", leading to confusion between having your cake and eating your cake, which can be essentially synonymous colloquially. Which may not have been the case when the phrase originated.

Not even for data harvesting, I used to work several years ago in the pre-LLM hype days on the chatbot team for a company, and we saved every single message that was typed for debug purposes. How are you supposed to know when shit breaks if you’re throwing out the data

15

u/Effective_Olive6153 12h ago

this is doubly true for AI chat bots, because they are specifically designed to harvest and analyze all the incoming data

I recommend investing in some local models if you just want to have some private AI assistant.

3

u/Somanylyingliars 9h ago

So youre saying when I tell Google chat bot that the company suck and they can fuck off to hell w their constant suggestion someone will read?!! Splendid!;

4

u/Effective_Olive6153 8h ago

the bots read it and aggregate data from millions of users to notice patterns. I am pretty sure they have up to date information about how people all over the world perceive their company. Then later some executive board meeting will show a chart about how opinion of the company is going up or down over time

53

u/happyflappypancakes 13h ago

Harvesting and selling. We should be seeing some of that money. Its like a farm owner reaping all the rewards of the harvest but not paying his laborers. Except in thhis case the laborers alao generate the crop.

u/LordofDsnuts 13h ago

If you are using a free service on the internet you are the product.

If you are using a paid service on the internet you may still be the product to subsidize costs or increase profits.

23

u/Amon7777 13h ago

We may be reaching a point where we aren’t even the product but a resource to be used. The data we create just by writing this here on Reddit isn’t linked to us as the product, but is adding to the product that Reddit can sell. For AI companies, that data is what they’re buying to train and enhance their products.

We are essentially working for Reddit (and any social media that is data harvested to be clear), meaning Reddit is the product, not us.

It should then be double depressing that humans aren’t even that valuable anymore.

4

u/20_mile 12h ago

AI companies

Unrelated to what you were saying specifically, the AI oligarchs have a groupchat going where they are betting who will be the world's first person to be the sole employee / owner of a billion dollar company.

People, workers, are irrelevant now. One guy can build a billion dollar company by himself.

Check out the recent Impolitic with John Heilemann podcast episode with Naomi Klein where they discuss her new book.

1

u/miguelito_loveless 10h ago

I want to keep thinking of this realistically after getting more involved in the IT world and finding that most of the people who supposedly work in technical jobs appear to spend almost all their time solving scheduling/dumb (very dumb) logistical problems with very little left for tech stuff. Technical problem-solving is left to a very few specialist gurus who no one thanks nearly enough. People want to pretend they have jobs they don't actually have, and their employers are completely fine with that.

That "one guy" will not have built his billion-dollar company. He MAY have done the initial planning but then just held on tight to ride the engine of other people deciding on details and actually implementing pretty much every aspect of his enterprise (while he takes credit for being a genius).

1

u/PiccoloAwkward465 10h ago

mostly like "if there is any possible way to monetize your interactions with our product, regardless of paying for it or not, we will sell it to the furthest extent possible"

8

u/MrdnBrd19 12h ago

Technically you do see that money. Providing services and serving data costs money.

Like let's just take Google Maps for example, analysts predict Google spends about $1.5 billion dollars a year to keep Google Maps updated. Things like buying new satellite and aerial data, maintaining the Street View vehicles and personal(they use everything from cars, to boats, to people, they have even used sheep), processing all the new data they get, verifying and moderating changes that need to be made. They then have to pay to serve that data to their customers(though Google maps uses a ton of cost saving tricks like using Google Distributed Cloud to help serve map data).

IDK how old you are, but before Google came and disrupted the GPS market GPS providers passed those costs back to the customer. GPS hardware was fairly expensive and map data was updated via periodic paid updates(usually annually, somewhere between $50-$120 depending on the service). You couldn't get features like real time traffic data, weather, gas prices, etc unless you paid for a subscription, and even with all that verification was spotty at best. God forbid you have to drive through a rural area(you know, where you might need it most) because data was often just straight wrong or in some cases non existent.

You signed those rights away when you downloaded or started to use the product. Got to read that fine print.

11

u/happyflappypancakes 13h ago

And I think that is something people should not accept. Those laws can be changed. People are a product now. People shouldnt accept being sold without compensation. Times need to change with the technology.

5

u/poppin-n-sailin 13h ago

You're not wrong, but there are different levels of security available. Using an LLM though..... 0 privacy or security.

4

u/GoatsFromUnderground 12h ago

There is tons of privacy and anonymity online, it is very easy to be very private and very anonymous online. If your free-and-open-source client side software encrypts what you write, and whatever gets transmitted by third parties and saved on third party servers is encrypted, you can write whatever credible or non-credible threats you want about anything, save it directly in your Gmail, tell OpenAI about it, it won't matter, they won't know what it is. There is software available with a very high level of security and prvivacy and anonymity, but people generally just don't use it. Instead they log in to these services with their real names, give them their real credit cards, interact with them in plain text, and so on, and then they're surprised that companies steal their data and use their data against them.

Couldn't feel superior if everyone knew how to do it.

Tell that to the folks over in r/myboyfriendisai

Somehow I got a spam call to my work phone that I picked up and hung up on, and mind blowingly enough, within 10 seconds, my personal phone gets the same call from the same fucking spoofed number. HOW TF!?! I've never linked the two devices together, or logged in personally on the work phone. . . .

And increasingly the gubbermint wants to scan what's on ur hard drive. So off-internet privacy is gonna be dead soon.

Pen n paper here i come!

there's no such thing as privacy or anonymity online

How far we've fallen.

This sounds interesting, but I do think the name is awkward and for some reason a bit off-putting. Obviously that's just an opinion, but for me personally it somewhat evokes a feeling of mundanity, drudgery or even a general sadness or antiquatedness.

That makes sense, wasn't familiar with the word. I understand, I have the hardest time naming things myself. Hope you took my comment as constructive feedback and not just negativity or whatever. It's definitely unique, which could be more helpful than anything these days, with so many generic app names. It sounds helpful and I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

And seemingly every day new systems and laws are implemented to push that further.

What about Lumo?

I find it humorous that people think they are anonymous. That time has come and gone.

These companies all share a massive database. They use inference to deduce who you are.

1

u/d3arleader 10h ago

Well said, on Reddit. Surely won’t be tracked.

u/tdieckman 10h ago

This is true and should always be remembered. But also to be considered is that if she was talking to a psychiatrist, although they are bound by client-patient confidentiality, they too are required to report planned crimes.

All your mics are hot all the time.

LLMs weren’t released so we could test on it. LLMs were released so they can test it on humans

They share what you say, people get mad. They fail to share what you say, people also get mad. Damned it you do, and damned if you don't.

THIS SHOULD BE AN ALL TIME PINNED DISCLAIMER/STATEMENT/PSA ON EVERY SINGLE WEBPAGE/WEBSERVICE/MOBILE-APP EVERYWHERE

u/Majestic-Marzipan621 6h ago

This actually happened to me recently. A detective contacted me about an investigation that turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. But they had obtained a warrant and accessed two of my email accounts and some of my photos. Definitely made me rethink how much privacy I actually have online.

It baffles my mind that this is a surprise.

Did western society just forget about Edward Snowden?

He told us all, and showed us all with irrefutable evidence.

There are robust systems in place to obtain info on you.

u/Orio_n 5h ago

She was planning to shoot up a sheriff's office like what do you propose? Anthropic ignore that entirely?

1

u/zoetha 5h ago

I mean they’re legally required to report crimes

1

u/RollingMeteors 3h ago

Just a reminder that there's no such thing as privacy or anonymity online, tech companies are harvesting your data, the surveillance state is watching

¡Sure there is!

Just say you're "an artist" and you become as invisible as someone standing outside Wholefoods with a high visibility neon vest, clipboard, pen, and stack of papers. /s

You don't even have to be serious with it, just crayon some napkin and then you'll have a guile suit of disinterest for the public fovea /extraS

u/SonderEber 2h ago

Just in general, don’t put stuff online you don’t want anyone to know about. Regardless of where it is, there’s always a chance someone, or even now something, else is reading it.

1

u/AJDillonsThirdLeg 1h ago

Tbf, this woman told Claude she planned to shoot up a sheriff's office. I have no problem with an AI company having something like that flaged and relayed to authorities.

That said, yes, people should know that these things aren't actually private.

Yeah, you can forget about all this modern stuff, the NSA has been operational for about 20 years now, they are watching things they shouldn't have access to and they're snooping on everyone they possibly can at all times, doesn't matter what you did or didn't do, that's irrelevant, they don't need a warrant.

If you live in another part of the world, no worries, you're country has an NSA too, and if you live in the UK you can be proud that your part of the world started it and gave the US the blueprint to get up and running as quickly as it did after 9/11.

We don't need anyone to tell us that our cell phones are listening and watching us at all times. All the settings are suggestions, you don't have control over anything on it.

u/Fake_Opinions69 1h ago

As a follow up just because you don't hit send that doesn't mean it's not being recorded. The second you type something into your keyboard the logging starts. This comment, your comment, every single comment and post on Reddit and every single App / Website / Form before and after you decided to send or delete it. It's all there, somewhere, on a server, just sitting there waiting for someone to read it

So do what I do. Don't type anything of value or worth because it's all being slurped up by some shitty LLM being manipulated by sociopaths. Just feed them FAKE OPINIONS. FUCK LLM's. DOLLY PARTON WON THE PRESIDENCY IN 2024! CONFIRMED!

With a little lot of tech savvy there is privacy, as long as you don’t use it for illegal activities.
